Just wanted to follow up - I purchased a steamer and caning chisel, and with holes about every 3 or 4 inches, I managed quite easily to remove the spline and old cane. I got away with just water - didn't have to turn to denatured alcohol. Thanks again for your assistance here :)

THANK YOU!!! I have 8 damaged cane back '90s oak dining chairs that I was about to convert to upholstery. I think I can do this and I already have a steamer!

Thank you sooooo very much Mindy!!!! I inherited my grandmother's large dining set but could not find how to remove it from the back of my chairs to reupholster with fabric. I've been looking everywhere and thank God I ran across your video!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

1980"s glues can be really tough. Furniture companies at that time weren't concerned about replacing the cane in 30 years so if the steam doesn't work try injecting denatured alcohol in your steam holes.

Wow, this is great! I have some cane-back chairs from the 1980s (they were my grandparents' chairs) that I need to restore the backs on. This is definitely the only way I would feel comfortable removing that spline without damaging the chair too much. I'm not too worried about damaging the finish (going to refinish them anyway, and they're not that old). Once I get all four done, I'll give you an update!

Your method works great! One thought: if you're doing this project and you're worried about steam damaging the wood, why not polish the wood with some sort of oily polish - like Old English lemon oil, or maybe Pledge or Endust? That ought to bead up the water and let it roll off of the wood without damage.

I have an upholstery shop. I started caning last year. What's the steamer you're using?

That model isn't available but there are plenty that are similar, I see a Bissell that would work fine.

Where did you purchase your spline chisel. Great video, I'm going to use your methods of removal. I have 6 chairs to work on. Thanks you for the great tip.

Sadly I'm not certain where to find this chisel now or if it's being produced.

I'm looking for a supplier selling cane inserts . I have 2 chairs with broken cane.
    Any info appreciated

Please google "Pressed cane suppliers" I dont think I should recommend any particular supplier here but I will discourage you from purchasing from places like Amazon or big box craft/woodworking companies. Buy your materials from a dedicated basket and chair weaving supplier who will personally help you choose the right size cane pattern and spine for your needs.

In further explanation: Cane and spline needs to be stored properly and sold and used in a timely fashion. My own worst experience was weaving a seat with materials from Crafts 2000 (now bought out) the reed spline began to break the week I wove it. I have to assume it was old and sunlight damaged in the store.

I cut back the steamer attachment and glued in a phono plug as used in hi fi equipment. Some phono plugs don’t have a hole in the end so drill through. Use epoxy glue. Worked for me so far.
