Thank you for your straightforward step by step instructions. It has been years (way before UA-cam) since I tackled my dining room chair set. Your instructions refreshed everything for me. Just successfully completed a single round corner seat project. Patience and a good instructor made the difference. Again, thanks and Happy New Year.
Great video! I wish we would have seen this before the first chair. It went alright, but this would have given me more confidence and I learned several good tips. Now, on with the next three! Thank you!
Our chairs caning became cracked and torn so about 4 years ago, I re-caned them and it turned out great. Now, I am back to square one as they are cracking again. We have a house that is very dry. Aside from getting a whole house humidifier, can you recommend treating them with anything to keep the cane pliable? Thanks
This is the first time I’ve seen anything from your channel and I don’t know one of the things you have available but I wondered if you could post a resource to be able to buy these tools and supplies to be able to use such projects thank you so much for sharing
Hi there! We have the written instructions here along with all of the links to the products that you will need for this project - www.onlinefabricstore.com/makersmill/how-to-replace-pressed-cane-webbing/
So your chair needs to be hand caned. This is a completely different process. We are working on a video where we learn to hand cane, but we are not ready to put it out yet. Definitely subscribe so you don't miss it because that is coming your way!
This video was so informativa, THANK YOU! I just don’t know how to measure the right spline for my chairs, apparently there are different sizes. Will you please help me?
You can do it! Just make sure you are paying attention to whether they are hand caned or pressed cane. This tutorial only works for pressed cane pieces. We are working on a hand caning video but it takes much longer to do and is a little more complicated.
Thanks! So I'm having a terrible time removing the spline on a canoe seat. I'm thinking it was glued in like you describe. How did you get the spline out so easily if it were glued ?
I've saved this great video for about a year and am following the instructions today. Sadly, whoever repaired the chair before it developed a hole in the cane must've used superglue or something! The spline doesn't lift out even after multiple box cutter passes and the cane itself is so fixed in there, the chisel doesn't ease it out, but breaks it. Any advice? I'm needing to excavate the spline practically by the half inch. I assume that's due to the glue that used? Advice welcome...I have two more chairs to do.
Now, if I wanted to do away with the cane webbing all together how could I do that? What could I put in its place? I have dining chairs and in the middle of the backs, there is this cane webbing. I’m trying to give them a facelift and I kinda want to do away with those backings if I have a simple alternative. Thank you!
No! The cane tightens up a little bit when it dries so you actually want to install it while it is still a little wet because it will tighten even more and look even better when it dries. On the same hand though, you do not want to put any weight on the cane when it is drying because you could risk stretching it. You got this, it's intimidating but it's going to be much easier than you think. Best of luck with your project!!
You could probably wedge any material in there it's the same basic principle used in mesh/screen windows and doors. It just depends how thick the material is and whether it will withstand being sat on.
You could try adding a little more glue and then pushing it back in. You are going to want to put something heavy on top of it to keep it held down while its drying.
Had a problem. I the soaking instructions exactly. I had a spline break right at the inner edge of the groove rendering the entire piece useless. Reordering a new one. This happened because, in my opinion, the ends of the "shims" are too sharp. . I will be cutting and sanding mine down for the next attempt. This is my third one in 20+ years and the only one that has ever broken. Just want others to be cautious.
I have never worked with it.. But I suppose you could if you worked very quickly. I think you would probably be a better judge of that than me if you have experience with the glue.
found a chair from the 1800's and couldn't get the dang cane out of the bottom, back was easy.. bottom is impossible to remove except in tiny pieces with tweezers..lol
Best video I've seen yet. I never thought of removing the lengthwise strands! No wonder my caning looks untidy. Just your Californian vocal fry is irritating!

thank you!!!!!!! no life story incorporated into your video
Perfect video. Short and to the point. I wish the spline all came out that easily .
Another video I watched he steamed the spline to get it to come out more easily. Of course you cant steam around wood for too long.
It can if ya drill small holes into the spline and squirt vinegar into them, let it rest and walal
@@donnabauerofbrilliancebyde1178 thanks for that tip! I try to Dremel tool with not the best results
This is the best tutorial. Well done
Thank you for a no nonsense quick and easy video 👍🏼
Thank you for posting this video. It was very informative and I was able to save a chair from the trash after watching your video!
Glad to hear it!
The best explanation I have found on caning a new seat. Thank you.
Happy we could help! We are here if you have any questions along the way!
Thank you so much. This is a keeper! Can you recommend how to lighten the cane? Remove the stain? Is it even possible without replacing?

This channel is sooo helpful! Such a gem to have thanks!
Great video! I wish we would have seen this before the first chair. It went alright, but this would have given me more confidence and I learned several good tips. Now, on with the next three! Thank you!
very clear explanation!
Thank you so much for your time to help us.
Well presented and informative.
Thank you for your skills and instruction
From your Canadian friend,
Liam
very good instructions and to the point.

🥳Fantastic! 🥳Thank you! 👏👏👏☺️Now I am brave enough to try this! 👏👏👏
You can do it!
Excellent instructional video! My stool however has holes not spline. How do I re-cane this style? thanks

Brilliant !!!. Gr8 how to...thankyou 😊
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for your feedback!
This is fabulous, thank you!
Thank You and Fantastic job.
I have outdoor folding chrome/metal chairs with cane webbing stashed in my closet.. is there a major difference if the chair itself is metal?
From looking at the photos of chairs like you are describing online, it looks like it would be done the same way!
Amazing and informative - thank you!!
So happy we could help! Best of luck with your project.
I have an old chair with an Oval back, it seems I can do it per your instructions. Any tips for replacing the Oval back?
Easy instructions. Thanks! I have a chair.
This video was so informativa, THANK YOU! I just don’t know how to measure the right spline for my chairs, apparently there are different sizes. Will you please help me?
Most grooves are either 3/16" wide (use #8 spline) or 1/4" wide (use #9 spline).
Turned out great!! Thank you.
Great to hear! We are so happy we could help!
Really helpful video thanks! This might be a silly question but do you fit the cane while still wet from soaking, or dry it first? Thanks!
You should fit it while still wet/damp because it's more pliable so it won't break.
Does it make a difference if its soaked in cole water or warm water? Great video. Looking forward to attempting two chairs.
Love it
Ive passed on pieces to fix

Fantastic!!!! Thank you!!!
Thanks! So I'm having a terrible time removing the spline on a canoe seat. I'm thinking it was glued in like you describe. How did you get the spline out so easily if it were glued ?
There is a tool that you can use to help! You can find it here - www.onlinefabricstore.com/c-s-osborne-3-16-inch-caning-chisel-.htm
How about a dremel tool?
I've saved this great video for about a year and am following the instructions today. Sadly, whoever repaired the chair before it developed a hole in the cane must've used superglue or something! How would you charge for this for a client?
Now, if I wanted to do away with the cane webbing all together how could I do that? What could I put in its place?

Hi there. Unfortunately, I can't think of anything that would work without it being bulky. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!
OnlineFabricStore.net thank you!
TabithaNichole caning is so in right now
Natalie Russ I ended up keeping on my chairs and just chalk painting them. It actually looks great!
If the caning hasn't ripped but is popped out of the side, is there a way to fix it without replacing the cane?
Sure! It will likely not be at strong of a hold, but it is definitely worth a shot!
Perfect
Does the name need to dry completely before installing it?
No! The cane tightens up a little bit when it dries so you actually want to install it while it is still a little wet because it will tighten even more and look even better when it dries. Hello. Great work! Is this natural material? Can I use artificial one?
I suppose you could, although I don't know where you would get synthetic cane.
You could probably wedge any material in there it's the same basic principle used in mesh/screen windows and doors. It just depends how thick the material is and whether it will withstand being sat on.
I recently recanes my rocking chair and the spline pipped out on one side while it dried. How can I fix this?
You could try adding a little more glue and then pushing it back in. You are going to want to put something heavy on top of it to keep it held down while its drying.
Where can you buy cane webing
You can find caning here - www.onlinefabricstore.com/product-group-caning.aspx

can be cane painted on both sides? how it breaths then?
I would only recommend painting one side or the cane will not breath and could become prematurely brittle
Does hot woodworking glue work here? That's generally my first choice because it sets so quickly.
I have never worked with it.. But I suppose you could if you worked very quickly. I think you would probably be a better judge of that than me if you have experience with the glue.
My chair seat is 16" wide so I assume I should purchase 24" wide cane webbing?
yeah, I would recommend the 24" because that width should be cut to 20" total.
Very informative thank you. Also you’re very cute.
found a chair from the 1800's and couldn't get the dang cane out of the bottom, back was easy.. bottom is impossible to remove except in tiny pieces with tweezers..lol
The wedges cut threw my cane 😭
Best video I've seen yet. I never thought of removing the lengthwise strands! No wonder my caning looks untidy.
Just your Californian vocal fry is irritating!
Gimme a break! She sounds fine, I bet you are irritating in real life.
1st
My groove was 1/4“ wide so I bought 1/4“ spline but with the webbing in the groove the spline is too big. What do I do?
