The long (and quiet) road to Angletarn Pikes / S2-Ep3 Hiking the Wainwrights

- Hiking the Wainwrights - Season 2: Far Eastern Fells - Episode 3. Angletarn Pikes (and a few others), The Lake District
I'd been trying to plan this walk for some time. The obvious route was to drop down from Martindale and do a horseshoe; taking in the summits of Beda Fell, Angletarn Pikes, Brock Crags, Rest Dodd and The Nab. But it seemed like an unrealistic distance to walk on a winter's day where daylight (and more importantly filming light) is significantly reduced. And so I came up with a handful of hideous routes that would hit the various fells. Hideous because they entailed sections of walking out to a fell and then retracing my steps back to the main route. Luckily I had the sense to measure all the options before the day and it turns out that the original planned walk from Martindale was the shortest route!
Anyhoo.....a wonderful day was had. I'll really miss this northern section of the Eastern Fells and can't wait to return to Martindale in future. It's such a beautiful quiet corner of the national park.
I'd like you to count how many people I see throughout the day.

My word, have been working my way through the Wainwright's section of your adventures and wow! Just so fantastic that it has taken me this long to comment! Sir, your videos are amazing! I lived in Millom for 15 years and did a small amount of hiking and indeed hope to move back to the lakes when I retire in 2 years time. But I just wanted to thank you for all of your work and enthusiasm and passion for the lakes! It has given me renewed excitement for my retirement...thank you!!!!!
Yes Glenn, fantastic walls that straddle the landscape, those Wallers are a hardy breed. It's the landowners giving a clear message that this is my land. A lovely shot of Finn amongst the stones, thanks Glenn n Finn. 👍
...crisp and Ready for such energy!!!
Thank you for the Winter view, this close to Christmas and living in Florida, this helps set the mood
Another excellent walk. Is there a nicer place in the world for peace & tranquility than angle tarn..??? 🤔 what a beautiful area that is..always walked up parking at Brothers Water & via Hartsop..chocolate 🍫 is terrific especially in winter 😋summer not so as it bloody melts...but snickers & topics are delicious. These are the best walks as they are away from.the madding crowd..keep up the great channel 👍
What a stunning walk. This has been added to my walks-to-do list.
That looked like a very cold day. It made me put on an extra jumper just to watch in my armchair. I’ll next be visiting the Lakes for a fortnight in May, when the weather is warmer and the days are longer. I will hopefully follow in your illustrious footsteps and take some videos myself. Your vlogs make me hungry to be there. Thank you.
Love Turkish delight and bountys! Amazing vid thank you! 😍
Thank you for this clip. Really lovely hike, and your video is fantastic.
Beautiful winter footage...brilliant walk for you cheers
Another great video, really enjoyed, a big thank you for your efforts. 👍
It’s a pain when you can’t sleep, if I’ve got to do something the next day I can’t sleep either, bloody ironic.
Hey Herdy! 🐑 You waving into the shadow had me proper giggling! 😂 Hubby says "we'll have no more of this turkish delight nonsense, even a dark bounty is pushing it but we'll let him off and continue to follow the channel if he never says such things again" 🤣🤣 I mean, I feel that's harsh about the dark bounty (bloody love a dark bounty) but i'll agree about the turkish delight, talk about controversial! Also, a Yorkie is a great choc bar for hill foods. x
waffle all you want Glenn another brilliant video 👍
Such a good Winters vlog this. Although I am guessing very cold. Conditions looked great. Skies and the white dusting everywhere really added to the landscape. Angletarn Pikes is one of my personal favourites. Beda Head there again soon ;). Thanks for the vlog. I always look forward to them here in Dubai. My slice of home.
Starbar! Underrated, like a nutty boost.
Another great video. Thanks again for all the excellent content and informative waffle. Walked Beda Fell late July 2021. Really quiet even in summer with hardly a soul around.
Still not tackled The Nab. Peat hags and the long trudge on the lane have put me off so far.
Loved the film, as ever.
Lovely bit of filming and wonderful views.
The D peak looks like our Half Dome in California 😊
Love your hike
Great video again, what a beautiful setting, definetely my kind of weather! Keep it up mate
There isn't a better feeling nor place to be than in those fells in the depths of winter.....ESPECIALLY if you set off before dawn and hit the tops as the sun is just rising... it's just immense to sit there in the cold and feel the few degrees of warmth the sun gives you as it pops up above the horizon......MY HAPPY PLACE
Brilliant video again you picked a cracking day again....no people 👍. I'm with on the dark chocolate Bounty top draw....try Double Decker no nuts but satisfying. Wishing you a very Happy 2023.
Just loving those frosty, misty views popping up over the peaks. The icy turfs and running deer, wonderful.🦌🦌🦌
Fantastic day out! Great conditions! I hope to get some winter hikes in early 2023
Magical, excellent, thank you 👍
Fry’s Turkish Delight?!
No. Just no. 🙂
Other than that, fantastic video, as always, and thank you. I just love going for walks ‘with’ you. 🙂
thank you for another entrancing upload. it is clear you have the eye of a photographer and the lack of ego is refreshing. its never about you, just light and landscape. Peace.
Thank you, that's very kind of you to say 😊🙏
Great vid! A mammoth walk through the ice age. The amount of gloves off work to do photography-I take my hat off to that in sub zero temperature. It would have been an interestingly surreal ending if you had ended up having to sprint the final few hundred yards due to zombie attack, shame that was missing!
Outstanding video, what a place
Absolutely love the channel 😊
Glen Wonderfull video. got to get up that valley. I also lover theBNW photos in the crown by Mike Shepherd. Best Wishes for the New Year
After long days at work to join you and be transported to these magical locations and dream of when we can be back out on the fells ourselves is just wonderful. Thank you so much Glenn, these videos are so well done and you are such a warm and engaging host. The views today were breathtaking. Only downside is my wife has started to fancy you….
I've just done that this morning I was confused by the snow but did recognise it that's the best way to do it loads of false summits and up by the wall on first incline is brutal in summer loads of bracken and midgys😊 😂
I'm not sure about Turkish Delight but definitely with you on the Topic, Snickers and Bounties 😋 - fantastic, frosty & chocolatey adventure 👍😎
Thanks mate, I knew it was controversial 😂
Just love your work.
Your vids are amazing mate. I love it up there around High Street.
Camped on the North pike ( and did a film 😜) , it was a great spot ......funny. I never liked a Snicker till I had it on a hike, now it's a must
Looked superb , an area of the lakes I don't know too well. Merry Christmas
There are simply not words that exist to describe those scenes Glenn, although I do exactly the same as you, and continuosly blabber on and on and on about what I'm experiencing whilst out walking! Some of the shots in this video made me cry, that's how powerful beautiful nature affects me. Take care, and remember " A Mars a day, helps you work, rest and play!" Festive wishes! Simon, Somerset.
Great vid, drone shots were immense!
Fabulous!!!
Mars bars are good as they are glucose heavy. Love a dark chocolate Bounty, and I’m with you on the Turkish Delight… but for the love of God man… where are your Tunnock’s Caramel Wafers!😎
Oh yes, love those too 😍
Thanks for the Candy bar tips
Loved this walk can’t wait to do it
“Maybe that is place where I’m gonna die “😂🤦🏼♀️…. 🤔🤔🤔 maybe. In any case, it is really beautiful spot and beautiful walk again. Thank you for taking us with you 🙏.
Fry's Turkish Delight - full of eastern promise!
So lucky caught it just perfect. A great walk and views . Superb.
I feel your pain.
I thought I was the only one with bald head slippy hat issues. 😬
I ideally need a couple of days stubble growth to velcro my beanie to my skull 😂.
Normal hairy muggles have no idea of the issues we deal with silently!
Nice one! Thank you! 🎉
Fry's Turkish delight = gorgeous! I've always been looked at funny for enjoying them haha
+ Wispa Gold
+ Double Decker
Great video pal, you've inspired me to consider this route in 2023
Good choice 😁
Stunning video and I did chuckle when you said you weren't going to get distracted - no chance! I love these 'made up' horseshoe / circular routes rather than out and back. Those are such lovely peaceful valleys, you're right. I last did the horseshoe of Beda, Angletarn and then back via Place, so it's good to be reminded there's another horseshoe possible - your channel is always full of good ideas (and superb wafflage!). I still need to do the Nab - last time I approached it from Rest Dodd I turned back as I think I'd have sunk without trace as the conditions were too boggy. Another vote for Turkish Delight (great way of glueing your teeth together!) and dark Bounties.
Well I’ve just watched the best ever WC final followed by the best YT vid I have ever watched. Stunning Glen, your stuff is amazing .Thank you so much. Oh and BTW Turkish Delight 🤮🤮
Thanks so much 😊 🙏 😂
Amazing truly !!
Fabulous video, great photography and commentary, my only regret is that I'm 74 years young. After seeing your videos I wish I'd have started hill walking much earlier. Thank you for the inspiration to get out there. Keep it up, looking forward to watching more of your videos.
What a brilliant Winter walk Glenn, thanks for filming and sharing it. BTW, I think I speak forcthe majority of your followers when I say this, please don't dial back on the waffleage, we love it and it's part of what makes your vlogs so special. 👍🙂
I did three hikes this week and they would be notoriously boggy but thanks to the weather the ground was solid. I sympathize with the hat slipping up your head situation but a days growth and it'll be like it's on with velcro 😁
My absolute FAVOURITE ( amongst so many) Lake District/ Hiking/ Camping channel. Superb.
Cracking film in the best weather conditions. Good to see a bit of drone action. Nice to see the deer I have yet to meet them. Thanks again.
That was a magical walk, the dusting of snow really made it look stunning. I feel your anguish with the shaved head/rising hat, it's a right pain in the bum. 😅
Thank you 😊 🙏 😂
Beautiful video Glenn, simply stunning. Thank you for sharing your adventure as always. 😀🥾🏔️
Thank you 😊
Just watched this excellent video. I noticed how careful you needed to be coming off the nab. I have to say that despite being very experienced on a variety of terrain it was looking down off the nab that gave me one of my only unnerving moments. Looking forward to revisiting more locations through your videos.
Thanks very much 😊 it's an interesting hill that takes you by surprise!
Stunning🤩I could feel the cool crispness through the telly❄️ also, yes to Turkish delight👍🏻 not had that in years..I bet they've got smaller
It literally feels like were in your boots.thanks so much.Been on a nice trek on Dartmoor today,no snow but quite wet.Watching your video is such a great end to the day
Great walk! I love frost/snow and the morning light was spectacular! Extra special to see the deer too! ❤
Hi Glenn - Just discovered your channel. Really enjoyed that video. The drone footage from Angle Tarn Pikes was stunning. I completed the Wainrights 13yrs ago and since retirement have been trying to do a second round
(101so far). Don't know if my old bones are up to the job though! Subscribed!
Glad to see the drone making a comeback… I think you do such a fantastic job with it 🙂👍
I LOVE Fry's Turkish Delight on hikes... So much sugar and so easy to eat on the go.
I also sleep quite poorly the night before a hike in the lakes. It's all the anticipation, the route planning in your head, alternatives if the weather changes suddenly.... And then on the day you're rewarded with sleep-deprived giddy highs.
You had an absolutely gorgeous day for it! Some of these peaks were my introduction to the lakes YEARS ago.
What a winter wonderland Glenn. I love how excited you get about the Lakes; I get it completely❤
Stunning as always, beautiful views, and yet again, informative as ever. Bizarrely we were just eating a bit of scanarge as we were watching ' Fry's Turkish Delight'!!! Love your work Glenn.
thank you for your effort i would like to say awesome video. I guess the reason why you saw the deer was there was no body up there. Oh and thanks i love bannerdale now everyone will go there.😂
Completely agree about turkish delight. If you haven't already, and the opportunity arises, turkish delight ice cream is amazing.
Loved seeing all the amazing colours and light on this one. Your enthusiasm is infectious.
Keep the videos coming.
As a fellow shaved 👨🦲, totally agree 🤣🤣🤣
Another brilliant video Glen 👍👍👍
I get lack of sleep before a big hill too!
Another stunner !
Thank you so much
This is so magical. Winter wonderland 🤩❄️❄️
Love all your videos. Even though I live in the lakes, I would struggle to get to where you go.
Thank you
Thank you 😊
One of the best Lakes films I’ve seen. Thanks.
Sunday dinner viewing is in 👍👍👍😎
Haha, thanks Will 😊 🙏
I'm floored again. Love it! What a great walk, what absolutely gorgeous views!
Excellent video as always 👌 😍 views are amazing. Love your passion for the place, I completely get it ... . doesn't it just make your heart sing ♥️ there's nowhere better to be for me.
Your videos are stunning!
Really enjoyable Glenn. Look forward to more of the same in 2023. Keep up the great work.
beautiful, painting a visual of a map of the lakes, knitting the routes together transcends any map, truly stunning.
Thank you 😊
Just wow the most beautiful I've ever seen the Lakes, awesome footage
What a wonderful walk. You don’t get many days like that in your life. Loved the chatter and your enthusiasm. Would have LOVED to see some of the photos you took on that beautiful day. You used to end some of your videos with them and I’m sure everyone would enjoy seeing them. Cheers bud.
Amazing video, as usual, great commentary and local knowledge. I was amazed you were doing it all without spikes on and on your own but then you are very experienced. Loved all the cloud views and the red deer encounters. I've made a note to one day follow your route. Regards, Ashley
More deer than people can't be bad! You caught the rapidly changing day really well.
Thanks 😊 🙌
Fabulous footage and a wonderful winter wonderland captured! We live in the Netherlands and are so enjoying living the Lakes through your eyes. It’s always so inspiring! ❤
Ace calm weather but i would have really struggled with the very painful Raynaud’s in my fingers and toes, it does get me down at times but i just crack on with it 👌👍
Another great vid. Thanks for all the content you've provided us with over this year, this new series is the best of the lot! You've been a real inspiration, to the extent I've even started my own (ham fisted!!) channel! Looking forward to all the vids 2023 will offer up.
It's cold and icy where I live so I had to spin indoors on my bike. Instead of watching a spin workout, I opted for this instead. My heart rate may not have spiked too high but mentally, I am much better off! Thanks for another beautiful film with great commentary.
Hope you took a lot of images, the colours were beautiful, reds, browns and yellows with the blue of the snow.
Lots and lots 😁
Another fantastic video! Keep up the good work.
Absolutely beautiful day to walk. Fantastic views and once again a stunning travelogue! I love the fact that you had seen more 🦌 than human beings.
Such a great content, this was brilliantly captured my friend. Seren piece of cinematography!
Another great video again, what a fabulous route and super conditions,The drone footage in the middle is stunning.Cant wait to get back up there next year. Please never stop doing what you do,your amazing mate, putting together all these videos, they are just superb, you capture the lake district perfectly, cant wait for the next one! Thankyou.
Gives a nice change to the views in the snow and fantastic to see the deer in such a beautiful wild setting. Not sure about Topics haven't noticed them for years now you mention it
Great one yet again Glenn, I think I enjoyed that as much as you.👍👍👍
Thank you 😊
This has just become my favourite video of yours. Love the snowy scenes and the amazing cloud inversions. Beautiful scenery and so different than just a few months ago. I went in September and had the same reaction as you when I went over the South Top and saw Angle Tarn - Wow!! My route was down the nose of the Nab.. Won't do THAT again! And I had to do quite a few diversions around the boggy peat hags.
Yet more lovely country, familiar to me from a number of shorter and summery walks (with special memories of Angletarn Pikes). The only part of this that was really new was the descent from The Nab, which I visited when the Martindale Deer Forest was still out of bounds, so I did a there-and-back trespass from Rest Dodd (a tedious fell). Hate to break it to you, but I love Topics too, but they stopped making them about a year ago. Hopefully temporarily but still...
Thank you 😊 but I'm crestfallen!
