- Hiking the Wainwrights - Season 1: Eastern Fells - Episode 7. Deepdale Horseshoe, The Lake District
One of the most obvious routes to tick off a large number of Wainwrights in one fell swoop in the Eastern Fells is the Fairfield Horseshoe. But, I simply can't bring myself to walk that one again as I've done it MANY times before. Besides, there's already a vlog dedicated to that route (see below).
So, I've decided to dissect that horseshoe into several smaller routes, starting with this one; the Deepdale Horseshoe. However, it's not all that much smaller. This was a big day out with equally big views and even bigger plumes of midges for added enjoyment!

Just loved this route. My first route I did and sat looking at my home the Isle of Man. No midgies that day.
Just supported your coffee fund 👍
A thoroughly enjoyable hike, well worth the blood, sweat and midges. Great views from Arnison Crag looking back to Ullswater. Loved the fact about St. Sunday. Thanks very much Glenn.
This man is a great vlogger. The details and the passion, magic.
Love watching these blogs....best on UA-cam by far.
Never complain about blue skies.
Everytime you walk through some bracken I feel like I need to do a tick check.😬😂
Love the show!
Thank you 😊
❤❤❤❤ all i can say is love. Very beautiful 😊
So pretty there. As a Danish person I find it interesting that you use the word beck. Not heard it in English before but probably old Norse as we call it 'bæk' and it's pronounced the same. Bæk - beck...
Terrific video Glenn. Thanks a lot for taking the time to film it. I have the same OMM chest pack but find that it is such a faff when it comes to taking the backpack off. How do you get round the problem??
I watched this video on Thursday while waiting for an operation to have an ICD inserted in Bristol Heart Institute. It took my my mind completely off my procedure and it had me wandering the fells with you, no better way to prepare for heart surgery! The op went well and I hope be back in the fells soon to complete my 2nd round of Wainwrights and finish off the outlying fells. Keep up the excellent series, it's doing more good for people than you might imagine.
Cracking Glenn, that's another walk added to my to-do list although I might start at Deepdale Bridge and miss out on Arnison Crag & Birks and head straight for Lord's Seat then Gavel Pike. Main reason for this? Well I've been on all the fells on your walk earlier this year apart from Hartsop above How and I do like the walk down from Hart Crag over Hartsop above How just that I've walked it the other way the past couple of times. Those midges/flying ants on Hartsop above How summit - flipping heck!!
Bits of three walks from my old days, and a connection I never explored. It was my Dad who introduced me to fellwalking and I can just imagine him, as eager as me, to see each one of these videos as you put them out. I wish he'd have had the chance, and I to sit with him and discuss everything we can see.
254 views but 39 likes, come on people play the game, hit that 👍🏻 button!
Thank you 😁🤞
Brilliant views much enjoyed from my sofa with a glass of red vino. Sorry that I can’t get up and do these kinds of walk. Keep up the good walk. Have really enjoyed this series of walks.
17th July 2021 was when I did Birks and St Sunday Crag and happened to be the hottest day of the year at that point. I remember I took an umbrella and used it as a Sun shade when the wind died. No midges though! Bathing feet in Grisedale Tarn was a highlight.
PS. Also discovered the Riverside Bar this year after doing Angle Tarn Pikes.
Brilliant vlog. 🤞hoping to do St Sunday Crag sometime. Already looking forward to the next episode...😀
Thanks, Glenn, for another fabulous video. Really enjoyed the route. We've done the Fairfield Horseshoe, but none of the others yet, so this has given us a lot of inspiration. All the best, Yvette and Mark
Another great walk Glenn, keep them coming 👍 👏
Great vlog once again. Loving the Wainwright series. Come on people, don't just watch, press the like button!
Thanks very much, appreciate it 😊 🙏
Thanks for your efforts in that baking heat, This route was helpful to see before i go there. Thank you sir.
Brilliant walk again such a great walk & the commentary is excellent 👏 this wainwright series is great to see 👍
Thank you 😊
What a beautiful day! Loving your videos Glenn 💕
Thanks so much 😊
Had this planned for a while, hopefully doing it tomorrow, slightly adjusted me route to match yours! Tia very much!
You aren’t wrong about it always being windy up St Sunday!!!!
Have loved watching your videos the last couple of years, but I think what you are doing with these Wainwright videos is outstanding. Thank you so much and keep up the good work.
The panos w the call outs are helpful thx
Absolutely love your videos , gives me great ideas and plans for for my next adventures. Thanks Sam from Cornwall.
This is a brilliant series! I am very thankful to see variants that are very rarely done. What a cracking day to be out in the fells!!
We hiked the horseshoe last year but went the other way round, (Hart crag, Fairfield then St Sunday) great memories for us watching this. We filmed it for our channel. 😊
Mate you could walk round tesco it would still be interesting....
😂
Watching from a sun lounger in 🇹🇷 so I feel your crispness in those warm conditions. 😅 went up a mountain called babadağ yesterday, 6200ft and 25 degrees at the summit, no wind and above the clouds. Crazy but nowhere near as beautiful as the lake district. Its all dry, dusty and a bit boring to walk once you leave the cable cars. Can't wait to get back out in the fells.
Spectacular scenery, spectacular production. Thanks and well done! One of my most memorable days in The Lakes was climbing St Sunday Crag via Pinnacle Ridge with a guide to aid me. Thanks again!
Thanks very much 😊 bet the ridge was a fun scramble 👍
Brilliant 👍
Love the bionic man moment 🤪
Great image quality , great commentary , i enjoyed that a lot ... thanks ...Subscribed .
LOVE IT!!
I live on the boarder of the Derbyshire Peak District so it’s been my play ground for years. But the Lake District is just another level of beauty.
Love the local knowledge stuff you add in - Domingo etc
Another good one Glenn. I did this walk a few months ago with a couple of friends. On the way down Hart Crag we spotted the Priest Hole and decided to take a detour to check it out. It’s a cracking walk.
LOL! in our fell walking early days we attempted the horse shoe for the first time. Clagged in on the summit we descended, stopped for lunch when the wind took some of the cloud away and we were stunned to be eating on what I now know is Cofa Pike. Suspicions set in and when I got my Wainwright out and could not see a view of St Sunday because we were on it that confirmed we were on our way to Patterdale where the pub advised there were no buses for the remainder of that year. Our family now refer to this walk as the Fairfield Banana. Yep, done what you pointed out and got the T shirt.
Great vlog again 👍
Oh heck 😂 Easily done though in bad weather
Hi Glenn. What a difference a week makes. I really enjoyed this blog, with the fantastic scenery and interesting facts. The locals name for St Sunday was a revelation. You earn’t that lager!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it 😊
Wow, what a stunning scenery my friend. You filmed this simply fantastically. Music and atmosphere are spectacular!
Thanks very much 😊
Glenn…….what a top bloke you are mind mate👌🏼👏
Cheered me right up after a manic day at work, great content as always 👍🏻
Ps that view of Deepdale Hause is something else 🙌🏻
Thanks very much 😊 🙏
Awww delightful! Great route, thank you for putting this 3D visual map, it's perfect. I love it how you deliver your presentation, it's like a proper professional geographical program.
Loved the vid again. I did the same walk but in reverse last winter when Cofa Pike was basically an ice cube. I learned an important lesson about footwear that day as I had no spikes or crampons, took me a good hour to get over it.and I confess I was terrified for a good part of that hour.
Excellent! Enjoyed all the continental extras too! 👍👍👍👏
Loved this video. Especially liked the drive footage at the end. Looking forward to the next one 😬
Great video Glen, I might have to try that route, thanks for sharing your adventure as always! ⛰🥾😀
Really enjoyable watch Glenn.
Another great vid! I have been watching your content for a year or two now and the are all very informative and your drone shots and pics are superb. 👍👍
Started watching your vids this past month. Love them. Beautifully shot and lots of knowledge. Cheers.
Another fantastic post. What a stunning day. Many thanks.
Top class videos as per usual . Cant believe u walked past the white lion . 👍
Beer bought mate 👍
Stunning episode - those views with the labels were just **chef’s kiss**
Makes me wish I was back in The Lakes. Slowly working my way round the Wainwright’s (42 so far), so it’s great to see how some of those I haven’t yet done “fit” together. Can’t wait for the next 😁
Thanks very much 😊 🙏
Fantastic episode really enjoyed it, I did try this route last year but turned back after St Sunday crag due to bad weather. There’s always another day 😉
Great vid mate, st Sunday crag is a great route from patterdale, , going to coniston myself tomorrow, but after watching your film I meant have a look at Fairfield lol , love the bionic man effects 😂
Great video of a lovely walk bet that pint went down well after a very warm day's walking 🚶♂️ keep up the great work 👍
Thank you.... It was one of the finest pints ever 😁👌
Another great video, thanks mate.
Always a pleasure to watch.
We've just bought you a beer, enjoy fella!
Thank you so much, that's very much appreciated 😊 🙏
Ace hike is that one, last time i did it we were blessed with the RAF in attendance.
Love your vids, been a big comfort while i've been resting an injury and stupid work! Hopefully getting out myself this weekend (Peak District) and testing out the old knee ligament downhill before a walk up Kinder to scatter a friend's ashes next month! I feel like i know the Lakes already, your vids are fab - keep it up! 🙂
Thanks mate for that one. Will finn be on soon. Hope hes alright, rave on . Rave on .
She'll be out in episodes 9 and 10, already filmed 😊
Sir Sir 🤚🏼
Can I just say - in no way is that a “wonderful” descent from Hartsop over How! 😳
I have just followed your exact footsteps today… my knees 😖
Nice F15S at the end! I did Cofa pike and St Sunday from Grasmere then camped on Sth ridge of St Sunday finishing down Arnison. Cofa not recommend with 13 kg pack! Nice vid.
🤩 ah been looking forward to this one. This time last week we'd just done this... Although we came off after St Sunday down to grisedale tarn and down the valley. I wish you'd have had our weather... It was wasted on my photography "skills". You'd have cleaned up! Looking forward to the next one. I've got these routes chopped up slightly differently... Although it will probably be next year now 😩
those midges though🤢
Thank you 😊
A cracking vlog as always mate, keep up the good work. 👍🏻
I think I was out on the same weekend and that heat is a killer, fair weather is nice but much better with cool air 😅
Stunning scenery/ video again..cheers
Stunning! Am going to do this route in October!!
Love your video's mate.❤
Looks tiring just watching it, but great views again
P.s. great footage of ascending kirkstone 😁👍
Super vlog really enjoying the series 👍
Excellent video 👍 brilliant 👍
just brilliant, best episode so far.
Thank you 😊
Hey Glenn, commented yesterday how much I enjoyed this vlog but, for some reason my comment was deleted (I assume by YT). Anyway, it’s a cracker this one. Got you a well deserved🍺 to show my appreciation and allow you to keep up the great work.
Thank you so much, really kind of you 😊 🙏 That is weird how your message didn't appear 🤔
Nice, narrow paths.
Great views as usual
Thanks. Really enjoyed this.
Thanks 😊
We’ve got to incorporate buty into the US language 😂
Oh yes, what a great idea. Butty is a great north England word 😊
What time of year does the snow hit usually. Is it more January/February time or will we see snow usually before Christmas in the lakes. I always seem to time it wrong.
Love that track at the end by the way!
Also bought you a beer for your troubles, sooth those aching legs a bit on the return :)
Thanks for the beer, really appreciate that 🙏
Snow can hit as early as November but normally just a dusting. But we can have deep snow right through to March. It's rare, but it happens. Normally though it's December to February, and it comes and goes on a daily basis 😂
@@BlackCrag thought it was just me. I drive up from Doncaster twice a month sometimes 3 times so I'll keep my eye on the pages and look put for the photos when the snow hits :) I'll hike in any weather though really. Always a pleasure to be in the fells. I'm looking for some good snow shots this year very much like your own. Like I say I always seem to miss it haha
"if my eye sight was better I could probably see the Priests hole..." You might be able to see it but would you be able to find it when you got there??? 🙂Just watched your previous video on the Priests hole earlier today 🙂
PS loved the video as usual, but those midges! OMG!
Thanks very much 😊 yeah, they were pretty crazy!
Would you ever consider running a group hike for those of us who would love to join you on a walk? 😬
I would love that! 😁
@@andreabrook1634 Me too 🙏
