80 240d 4 speed. Just got a nice one recently, at least everyone I had look at it said it's good. See,I'm a VW guy and had a customer at work who was selling the Merc and it looked really nice, but I knew better then to just buy it without having it looked at. Now I'm having fun learning all about it and doing some minor repairs. Good stuff,I'm glad to be in the club.
When I lived in South Africa I owned 2 S class Merc's. The first was a 350 SE and the second a 280 S. They were both superb. Built like tanks, ultra reliable and a joy to drive. I became a Mercedes addict and here, back in England, my daily driver is now an SLK 320 - a nearly 20 year old example, but it still looks and drives like new car. It will serve me for the rest of my life.
I have just purchased a 1988 300SE, and absolutely love it, it does need some work, but I’m having so much fun working on it, thank you for all your videos, it’s been very helpful, thank you,
I have a 98 129 and Im having a great time driving it as a daily driver and I service it religiously and have had no problems with it it's tough a looker and is a well kept secret to alot of people.you can find them and the prices are reasonable.low maintenance and parts are plentyful everywhere.i like you channel and reviews peace
I had a 116 years ago it was a 75 280s it was a great car put almost 500k miles on it before I sold it years later , was always a fan of the older classics my current ride is a 93 R129 500sl and so far am happy with it, it was a 1 owner car and well kept has a few cosmetic issues , the usual drivers seat wear but mechanically sound and all upkeep and maintenance records done by a local MB dealer , still keeping my eyes open for a nice 123 /280ce
I can attest to (1) the w201 190e - restored 6 and drove them for 10 years straight - the 2.6 is the preferred model; (2) the 87-93 300e w124 - just a bulletproof comfortable reliable car, and (3) my favorite, the w126 420SEL Series II (1989-1991) which provides v8 power that gets 22mpg highway/17city and has the long wheel base of the 560SEL without being nose-heavy or having the impossible to repair hydraulic rear suspension. Always buy the best condition you can and pay up at the beginning - it's cheaper and you'll enjoy your car more.
@@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753 1 owner she was a doctor it's amazing how everything still works even power seat functions. Just has been sitting for 3 years I pumped out old fuel and drove it 7 miles home just fine. It has a little issue where it wants to go under 550 rpm and try to stall out but it corrects itself.
I drive a 1987 560SEL as my daily driver putting 50 miles a day. Not the best on gas consumption or performance but it is a dream to drive and makes me happy!! I do all my own work on the car - that is the only way you can afford the maintenance on this car. Lots of car for the money if you are a strong DIY.
We really appreciate you Steve Heracleous for viewing our videos and leaving a comment. I tried to read as many as I can and take your responses for consideration on future videos. Thomas Polk UA-cam Creator.
The w201 2.5 is literally a tank. The previous owners tried to destroy it (NO maintenance) but it just kept running. A very good car also for long distances, but not fastest.
I know it is a two year old video. But is amazing that you put a w123 with Tenerife number plate as an example. There are w123's here in Canary Islands in brilliant condition for good prices. We care our cars here and rust is not a big issue here affortunately. Great channel
We really appreciate you Dumo Asechemie for viewing our videos and leaving a comment. I tried to read as many as I can and take your responses for consideration on future videos. Thomas Polk UA-cam Creator.
i owned a 190D but the one i had only had 75hp which was disappointing. The two W124s i had were gasoline but each had about 109hp which was decent. In the future i’d love to have a W123 Diesel because i dig the mainly mechanical cars.
I agree with Pierre's list completely. His first pic is my favorite Mercedes Benz of all time. The 1988-1991 Mercedes Benz 300SE! You get the look and prestigiousness of the giant S class but with the smaller more easily maintainable 6 cylinder engine. I love these cars so much.
I have recently acquired a late model 99 W202 C230K sedan. Second 2.3L Kompressor engine i have owned. 1sr was 2001 Coupe. I love those little engines. pretty easy to work on and majority of parts not expensive. Love the look of the 99 sedan. Iconic. I love driving my benz every day, makes me smile. 😎
If the under valued 450SL makes the list which I believe that it does, my pick is the 1973 450SL with the euro bumpers not those ghastly bumpers as equipped on the 1974 model and later
Hello P. Only discovered your videos two days ago. A diesel 300 maybe in my future. The desire is for road trips, safety, and practicality. You seem most informative and knowledgeable apparently sincere in your passion. I am subscribing. Thank you.
I was surprised to not see the W124 on your list - especially the 300 turbodiesel. I also love my W123 wagon turbodiesel but those are hard to come by cheap anymore.
W201, w124, w123, w126, w140 and the r129. Best cars in my opinion. Owned a 201 and 140. My father had a 140 a 123 and a 126. Saving up for a good r129 now 😃
I have a 1989 190d was the 2.0l euro engine. It's a relatively rare 5 speed manual. Slow? Sure, but reliable and I love it and the Prius-like gas mileage.
I recently bought a 300SE to use as a daily driver. Mine is an '89 in nautical blue and it's gorgeous. I really like the proportions of the short wheelbase W126, which is why I wanted an SE over an SEL. I used to own a W201 so I'm familiar with the M103 engine. Head gaskets, finicky fuel injection system and mediocre fuel mileage are shortcomings. But the motor is buttery smooth and otherwise bulletproof. It's definitely more fuel efficient than a 560SEL. I think you meant to compare it to the 420SEL on that score, where admittedly the 300SE doesn't shine. That's mostly because of the gearing that has the engine spinning at 3500RPM at 70 MPH. It's incredibly comfortable, perfect for road trips, and I get compliments on it all the time. It's a really handsome car.
absolutely gorgeous car! I too recently acquired a mint, '90 300SE, one owner, 105K miles, smoke silver on palomino leather, this is what I consider the best color combination of these classic tanks. Every time I open the garage door and that front grills stares back at me, it takes my breath away and I still can't believe I am one of the few lucky owners of a W126. I drive mostly on the freeway so gas mileage is decent at 19 -20 mpg.
sorry Wes, I don't know of a good source....except that you'll just have to keep checking your local Craiglist or eBay and see what's available. It took me a good 7 or 8 years of part time searching to find mine, and only because it has the right color and condition at the right price, the owner lives relatively close to me, and my spouse agrees to let me enjoy it while it is taking up one precious space in our garage. Good luck to you!
I own a 1989 300SEL 156k miles at the moment, I got my son a 1991 300E 8 years ago 180k maybe more at the moment. Did a valve job on it because just like he mention. He has been driving with no problems. I just picked up another 1991 300E for my daughter's (twins) last summer with 90k miles. If you don't mind the oil leaks the old MB diesels are great. If you don't want a diesel the best engine (IMO) is the 103.
I am really enjoying my 1981 300SD. It’s got some issues but the bones are good. Not one drop of rust. Came from the California desert. A little gutless. Maybe some vacuum leaks I am thinking. I hope to get it back to tip top shape.
Brett, if you ever need advice, just email me ...mbownersforlife@bellsouth.net most of the time these need the following: - a valve adjustment -the bolt in the back of the intake that goes to the aneroid compensator replaced -the EGR removed and cleaned, or a plate made to seal the gap between the EGR and the intake -fuel filters, if not already done -ALDA, or aneroid compensator adjuster calibrated -spring inside fuel return valve stretched out -cam and injection pump timing checked if needed. -check for any sticking brake calipers what colors?
I would add the 126 420SEL. I have one with a few mods (brakes/suspensio/wheels/tires) and it is a wonderful driving car without the complexity and expense of the 560s hydropneumatic suspension. Again, just make sure you get one with the "dry" suspension; Konis are relatively cheap; new spheres are NOT! Also try to find one with the 228bhp engine. Prices for these are going up, but still not approaching 560s. LOT of car for the money.
Thanks I have owned a w201 and literally drove it to 300,000 miles. Then had a brand new cadillac for 3years, no personality or style and went back to a 96 w140 S500 which in my opinion is the best car ever built if you know what your doing with a Mercedes. I save a ton of money by doing the work myself
@@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753 I have owned 3 w140 mercs. 94 95 s320 and a 97 s500. Only issues I had were pse pump or the secondary air injection pump. But I just removed the pump and get a shorter belt. Love the w140. My wife drives a Lapis blue 1982 Mercedes 380SEC. All books and maintenance records since new. Great daily driver.
I agree with the W123 body style. I have a 1981 Mercedes 240d and it is a comfortable car and great to drive. This is my daily driver and has the 4 speed manual transmission which adds to the fun factor. If it needs any work it is fairly easy to work on and the parts are inexpensive and readily available on Mercedes Source, EEuroparts, and Pelican Parts. Often the Original Mercedes Parts are available on these sites.
Hi Pierre, thank you for the video. I agree that these are some of the most overlooked models out there. I would add my thoughts on the 107 that the SLC is another great value at the moment. These have always been overshadowed by the SL's. I personally own a 500SLC and a 280SLC with the manual gearbox. Both are amazing cars. Not only beautiful design, but a blast to drive on a perfect day with all the windows and sunroof open. I have noticed as of late that the nicer examples are starting to gain attention in the collector world. Happy Motoring!
Ulrich, this is awesome! I plan to do a video about the SLC and what an amazing car it is. i am too tall to own a normal r107 but i also have a 107.026. Email me sometimes and tell me about yours...mbownersforlife@bellsouth.net
Me too..well actually my wife does. A 1991 190e 2.0 euro spec manual sportline , no catalyst and 126bhp. 400,000 km and no rust at all. Just a great car.
When I went away to university my parents bought me a 1985 190E and I still remember that little car fondly! I literally drove it to death. A Mercedes with an 18yo! I know, don’t judge, it was the 80s & oil was flowing in Texas! I still regret letting go of that baby Benz to, wait for it, get a new Mercedes. That’s all I’ve ever driven in my life. One thing about the new C models is that they no longer have that discreet silver star on the hood. Supposedly, millennials prefer that huge vulgar emblem all the “lower end” models now have. I decided to keep my 2003 C240 & it’s still running well. The interior, though, is cheap plastic & literally falling apart! To close, I wish I still had the 190E!
I love my 1981 300SD, Its my daily driver with over 300,000 miles on her. EDIT; I love all W126's as I use to have a 1987 560 SEC and should have never sold it.
I have a nice 92 190e,it's amazing feeling car,I have a newer mercedes and they are night and day different,it gives you a classic car feeling,I just did emissions and it was crazy low for a 92.
You left out the 126 chassis 300SD 1983 inline 5 cyl. turbo diesel. I own one and I love the car, easy to work on, will get up and go, and rides smooth! And 25 mpg!
with straight pipes they are pretty loud..if your exhaust is in good shape i would focus on improving things on the car that are wrong with it...these cars usually need timing chains at 100-150k miles...if you havemt checked your chain yet, you need to
So after about 20.000 km I need to replace it..What are the symptons of a bad timing chain? How can I see that it needs to be replaced? Not that i'm gonna wait till I'm sure it needs to be replaced tho :P Thanks for mentioning it and keep up with your good informative videos!
Cool video. W126 300SD to me was one of the best cars built; kinda sad not to see the 5-cylinder diesel mentioned. I love the 240D, W123 also. I've had two of them. The SD has always been my favorite. I have a 1984 with 752K miles on it. Just bought a 1983 with only 132K, totally restored. Should last me the rest of my life!
I own a white 1990 560SEL I bought for 5k like 7 years ago and it was definitely my dream car/reclining back seat!! sunroof, lots of power, everything I could ask for in a car for the 2 years I drove it. But unfortunately its been in the garage now for 4 years due to a surging idle and some shady mechanics that couldn't fix it. I hope to get it running again someday soon but I'm not a mechanic. Great videos I just found your channel today !! Sub'd
Tony, the idle surge your experiencing is likely a vacuum leak. Email me at mbownersforlife@bellsouth.net...I might be able to give you a few pointers if you can give me a little extra information.
I would replace the 300SE on your list with a 1981 through 1985 300SD. Besides the head gasket issue on the M103, you also have to deal with the front crank seal and the finicky Bosch Jetronic fuel injection system. You might have to rebuild your front suspension and upgrade to 15" tires to get the ride quality of the 300SE, but the reliability of the 617 is worth it. Also, no check engine lights or smog requirements for the 300SD.
@@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753 Then again, after owning a 1985 300D, I much prefer my '89 300SE and its amenities/interior, exterior complimentary color cladding, 0-60 only about 2 seconds less than a 420 - to the early SD, and its issues, pumps, and turbo. Plus, the '89 also has the later seats, its the last year for virgin steel, no air pump, no MAS relay, no egr valve, and retains the antenna switch (yes, i prefer the original 780/1480 Becker to a blingy new stereo). And, I have a '92 300D 2.5 Turbo that I like better than my '85 300D. Took a while to find my 300SE, because I hated the black, white, silver typicality of almost all W126 cars. Really doesn't matter what you think in hindsight. I agree with your original assessment. So, I found this '89, which is the last year for Petrol Green, and only year with complimentary Taxus Green cladding: mutley.hypermart.net/Green300SE-4better.jpg
My daily driver is a 1987 300SDL, it is a great machine. The extra rear leg room is perfect, the proportions of the car (to me) look just right and it is super comfortable. I am getting just south of 30 MPG and constantly getting comments about how nice it is. IMO, the W126 diesels are hard to beat, I love the OM603 engine
I rescued a 1991 300 sel from the scrapper and the car fired right up after sitting for 10 years. I did end up doing the head gasket and while in there, upper lower timing cover seals, chain and guides, tensioner, whole cooling system, and all new ignition parts. That motor goes!!!!!! Really amazing car and the rear legroom is unparalleled
that is crazy, I have owned several W124s and never paid that much for one. First was a black 87 300E i bought for 2300. needed driveline work that cost a whopping $300. drove it a few years. Next was a 1986 300E i bought for $1500, drove it a couple years. Next a 1990 300CE, bought for $1100 It needed a replacement gas tank, not everyone has the patience but the tank cost $125 at a wrecking yard and another $200 to get help to put it in, not very difficult. They are easy to do a tune-up and you buy the distributor cap & rotor online getting genuine Bosch parts, and spark plugs, easy to work on really. It's usually easy to find one that has one or two little problems that, after sorted, you will have one of the best cars ever made, that cost a ton of money when new, and drive in safety and enjoy for several years. The 190E 2.6 is a great car as well. nowadays I have a W140, a W220 and an R129 as well as a W163. All awesome. Go Benz and never look back. LoL I understand that most people probably don't have the patience the tools or the time to learn how to work on these, but that is the best way because a lot of mechanic shops when they see you drive up in a Mercedes they think you have money to burn and they want all of it. Everything you'd need to know is online for free... benzworld forum for every Benz ever made.
I love old Benzs. They're all dogs, though. The 560s are still drivable today, but even my 450sl fails to keep up with modern cars. They do shine on the highway, though! 😂
you are the best, thank you, I have a problem with the waste of fuel, in addition, there is carbon on the spark plugs, and the burning is not good W126 M103, so what is the best solution for this problem, thank you very much, Sir
@@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753 Hi Pierre, I recently had a small leak on my 560 SEC and had to have the auxiliary water pump replaced. Can you explain what this is and, why one would be necessary. I didn't know it existed and would never have found it. Thanks, Tom
This list is biased toward the older cars. Look at the SLK 230. I bought a 1999 for $2000 (overpaid). It had a few blemishes and the owner smoked in it. But I fixed a few minor things. For about $3000 I had a convertible with a working hardtop, cold automatic A/C, good tires, reliable, an engine that didn't show signs of death, and was fairly fast and fun.
circa 1969 to 73 280 s....w111 and w110....Dad had one from 69 until he passed in 2004 ...all others came and left that one remained an was driven at least 18 miles a day at least 3 times per week has over a million miles in 2004
I find it amazing Americans love the old 240 and 300 diesels. Engines that in Europe we consider noisy, underpowered and unrefined. Yet at the same time, you don’t buy the current diesels, when we’re getting 50+mpg and 250,000 trouble free miles and 280bhp from the refined modern 320cdi units. I sold my 270cdi, a fabulous 5cyl engine with 180k on it. 170bhp, loads of torque, refined and easy 45mpg on a run. I’ve now got the Jaguar XFS. A V6 3.0 diesel that does the 45mpg, will keep up with a Porsche Boxter and is more refined than most petrols, yet isn’t even sold in the US!
well, all these modern engines have down sides too. they are expensive to repair, they require batteries and computers to run and they are difficult for the do-it-yourselfer to service. thus being said, i don;t now why people here can't buy these modern diesels....it's a shame
I ha a 1983 and a 1984 300sd. 350k on the first. 375k on the second Brakes oil changes and tires. That was the extent of my expenditures. That 5 cylider would run forever. Bank vault!!
Interesting. Recently discovered ur channel. I’m up to my elbows in Ford’s at the moment, specifically an 03 marauder but secretly I urn for something more exotic. I’ll keep watching and learning
great list a family friend owned a 240d for decades i have a w202 c class i am hoping treats me well wish i could have tracked down a 190 and what no love for the 300d?
One more question here. I’ve heard that the Hydrak makes them less valuable. Also I know Mercedes tried to kill off the Hydrak by offering conversion kits to a conventional 3 pedal car. So the Hydrak probably isn’t as prolific in these cars as a normal transmission. What’s your opinion on this?
I have a '76 240D 115, and an '82 240D w123, both with 4 speed manual tranny's, daily drivers,...BULLET PROOF!!! That's why they're still using them as taxis across the pond. BTW, BOTH cars cost me $12k together, but separately. DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH!
I bought an 88 300se a year ago. I spent money tuning it up, but 9 months later I also had to replace the water pump. Ouch! What other potential costs am I looking at me wonders? It has 251 k miles now.
Absolutely agree! The 240d is the best. I have a 1981 240d diesel and I have driven it even through L.A. traffic to San Diego and I live just north of Bakersfield about an hour. It is also fairly easy to work on and there is no problem getting parts.
We really appreciate you kermitefrog64 for viewing our videos and leaving a comment. I tried to read as many as I can and take your responses for consideration on future videos. Thomas Polk UA-cam Creator.
I agree. The problem is that most younger drivers just want to jump in and go, without thinking of certain but important maintenance items that are a MUST in these classics. We seem to live in a throwaway society. (Until very recently I still used my dad's 1950's aluminum-cased Black & Decker electric drill.)
Hi! I really enjoy your videos and appreciate as i see you like a person who loves classic MB and also loves to share knowledge ( and a really valuable one ) . I am a MB enthusiast ( a new one at 49 years old ) and at this moment decided to buy one , i have the chance to buy a 1990 300E 24v or a 1987 260E both in very nice condition but i am concerned about the M104 24V engine vs the M103 12V in terms of service and costs of it , any advice in this decision ? I would really appreciate your advice .
I have 2 of W201... 1991 2.6 190E auto and 1990 2.5 190D manual. Even though the 2.6 is quicker off the line the 2.5 far more dependable but I love them both
the old deisels are smoke wagon pigs that measure acceleration with a calendar and most are rust buckets. the 300e has flex disks that rot and break and drive shafts that tend to vibrate and or warp. 190s as the baby cheap benz typically are dogged out and not taken care of..and need paint (2000) and new interior and seats (1500) before you even get into the mechanicals. the 450sl tends to have a very heavy top you need someplace to store, soft top is expensive to replace and leaks, and the motor can have severe timing chain stretching as well as tensioner issues that can kill the motor if not taken care of. Thos are the ones i have had personal experience with . Oh except a nice 124 e300 that burst a coolant hose and before i could pull over the temp warped the aluminum head (1800 and 6 weeks to re- machine). Also the rack was starting to wear at only 110K miles (3000.00) and the AC compressor went out (800) and then the evaporator in the dash corroded due to dissimilar metals being used. The part was 300 dollars to use a chinese replacement but as the entire dash and ABS and airbags had to be disarmed, removed, and replaced... the book on this was 18 hour job at 150.00 an hour. at that point i switched to a 1999 avalon which is not sexy but it works and with cold air and one repair in 6 years. sooooo... yeh.- these cars are like the pretty country club girls you meet who act like you are not good enough for them, then break your wallet and your heart. You have been warned.
All very good choices. My bias would be away from the 240D to a 300D of roughly the same vintage, simply because a non-turbo Diesel Benz is slower than justice. The acceleration is like walking while sitting down. The other slight list change for me would be the '76-'77 R107. I would go for a '78-'79 for the better corrosion resistant body treatments, (wax-oil & galvi rocker panels for instance), the re-located catalytic converters (out of the engine compartment to underneath where their high heat is less likely to fry wiring and stress rubber parts) and their upgraded K-Jetronic injection. And they still had 190hp, whereas the 1980 model had dropped to 160 in the US. Alden
A good 300D is about twice the price of a 240D, and is about 30 percent more to maintain, thanks to turbo, automatic climate control, more complicated transmission, extra valves to adjust, shorter suspension and motor mount life....the 300D turbo is still a great car but the 240D is actually a better value for the money. I have owned both and currently own a 300D and the 240ds always cost less to keep up with. The 78-80 450SL has a lurking expense- automatic climate control. My ambition with this video was to present the five cheapest mercedes to purchase, sort out to near new condition and maintain in said condition.
All valid considerations. My experience with the Diesel were older, a '71 220D and a ' 75 240D (one of my favorite cars ever) Both were manual shift, and both cartoonishly slow. The expense of the turbo versions are well stated, and the price is a big pain at the outset, but for me the slowness of the NA Diesels is a pain every day after that. Yes, the climate control for the late 70s US cars is a tragedy. Why the development team thought "pushbuttons equals luxury" is beyond me. The knobs and levers of the W115 cars worked so much more reliably and with less points of failure. For me the drivability of the K-Jetronic version is what wins. I had a '73 450SE, the solid lifter motor with the earlier injection, and I could never get it right. 11mpg and a 75 mile commute quickly put it back on the market. My '79 450SEL was all the good things, smooth & powerful, and a livable 17mpg highway. Keep up the good work, as I look forward to more .@@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753
you're have a lot of mercedes! Here's what i determined...i owned both a 1974 240D and a 1969 220d...I felt both performed well compared to the 300D non turbo wagon I had later. the 220D felt tired after 75 mph...the 240D cruised comfortably at 70 but did not accelerate well until I set up the auto trans to shift correctly. The 240D w115 was a smoother, quieter car than the 123, but the 123 did have more off the line power. the 220D was pretty good with stick shift though.
My 220D was not only manual, it was a column shifter, which was a unique experience for me. It had astounding A/,C powered by a chunky York piston compressor the size of a child's lunchbox (not a modern rotary) that would deliver air in your choice of "crushed" or "cubed" on the hottest days. That said, even on the highway, if you suddenly turned on the A/C, it would have you frantically checking to see if the parking brake had accidentally been engaged. Instant 5mph speed loss. It was also, and I'm not exaggerating, over 25 seconds 0-60. (Road & Track got 27.5 in their June 1971 road test) Once you were up to speed, it was fine and would cruise all day in balanced comfort. The trick to offsetting the inability to ever go fast was to never go slow, just keep your foot in it continuously. Alden @@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753
I have a 1980 240D ---I live n Los Angeles . I have had it serviced by an awesome Mercedes mechanic for the 9 years I have had it. I agree ---it is a very wonderful car to have. You feature this car as #2 but you did not mention what price range it should be in ---I am thinking of selling it . Any ideas?
the values seem to change by the week...It really depends on how nice of a car it is. Pricing depends on the car's needs, level of wear and tear, whether it is manual or auto, etc.
The 300 SE engine is bullet proof. One time mine leaped out of the car and took a bullet for me. The problem was getting it and its ego back in the engine compartment.
You should have recommended a wider year range for the 240D, because they were all good, and you should have included the 300D as nearly the same thing as these 240D. Your first and your last recommendation, I believe that these cars in these years have very expensive transmission problems, and very complicated transmissions. I have a 1986 420SEL, and the whole year range for this model approx. 1986-1991, and the 500SEL and the 560SEL have the same transmission, which can only be removed from the car as a complete unit attached to the engine.
I have a 93 w201 and 99 w202. I love the w201 way more although its in the shop currently for a head gasket. I wish I could swap engines between them to have a w201kompressor!!!
I'm glad to hear talking about my cars, I have a 300SE 1991 daily use and 560SEL 1991 long distance out of town, W126 really a legend will not be repeated. 🌷
@@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753 It does sir. Unfortunately the car is now succumbing to the ravages of rust at 21 years of age from the UK climate and winter salt.
I'm in South Africa and I have a 280se W116 in black
I have just purchased a 1988 300SE, and absolutely love it, it does need some work, but I’m having so much fun working on it, thank you for all your videos, it’s been very helpful, thank you,
Recently purchased a 1981 240D. I can agree and say they're a very comfortable and reliable driver!
M planning to buy same car but people says it's slow what's your opinion after driving this car thanks
@@RakeshPathak-lu8ycincredibly slow and does 0-100 kmh in 28 seconds but they're not built for speed. Extremely reliable and never had an issue.
One destined to become one of the best is the 98 C-230. My wife has one and it is one amazing car! Best vehicle I've ever owned by far.
Own a 78 300d I absolutely love driving this car, it is extremely comfortable and rides like no other.
Picked up a 1993 190E really excited to get it all put back together! Thanks for all the fun Mercedes content
awesome! what kind of condition is it in?
@@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753 1 owner she was a doctor it's amazing how everything still works even power seat functions. w126 anytime.
yes, w126 anytime!!! btw, wat do u tink is the best color for the 126? sparkling blue- too funky?
@@hhujan69 go for nautica blue or dessert taupe for a change. Haven't seen any in that colour, sparkling blue, may not quite appropriate for a classic
I drive a 1987 560SEL as my daily driver putting 50 miles a day. Not the best on gas consumption or performance but it is a dream to drive and makes me happy!! W126 in my books the best!! Thanks for listing it number one! Had a 300SE. What a car

Pierre ; thanks a lot for your comments ; I got a 190e 1989 m103 ; it's a blast. Regards from Costa Rica
I had an 1982 240D. Loved it. It was red.

Very True had a W126 300SE !!! What a car
i owned a 190D but the one i had only had 75hp which was disappointing. The two W124s i had were gasoline but each had about 109hp which was decent. In the future i’d love to have a W123 Diesel because i dig the mainly mechanical cars.
If you were disappointed with a 190D 75hp, you will pull your hair out with the whooping 63hp in a 3500lb car of a W123 240D.
I agree with Pierre's list completely. His first pic is my favorite Mercedes Benz of all time. The 1988-1991 Mercedes Benz 300SE! You get the look and prestigiousness of the giant S class but with the smaller more easily maintainable 6 cylinder engine. I love these cars so much.
the 300SE was a wonderful car.
@@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753 Yet in "hindsight", you'd erroneously take it off the list for an '81 SD.
Thank you Pierre! Great video and agree on the W201. I currently own an 89 2.6 and it's reliable and great looking!

wonderful! yes, the m111 engine was a very dependable motor...glad you'r enjoying it.
Hi I've recently bought a 1999 C280 with 96 000 km on the clock, just with alot of sun damage. Would you say I made the right decision 😣
Love them all, the 116 is my favorite, I got a 79 300SD, Love it, just a little more than my 240 and 300 D's
I love those cars too.
If the under valued 450SL makes the list which I believe that it does, my pick is the 1973 450SL with the euro bumpers not those ghastly bumpers as equipped on the 1974 model and later
I have the 1981 w123 240d 4 speed manual. Great car.
Hi there should I buy 240D what's your opinion
Hello P. Only discovered your videos two days ago.
A diesel 300 maybe in my future.
The desire is for road trips, safety, and practicality.
You seem most informative and knowledgeable apparently sincere in your passion.

Thank you.
thank you! i hope you find the 123 of your dreams.
Craig French beautiful car!
absolutely gorgeous car!
@@jasonlee595 Can you all direct me to a good source to purchase a 300SE?
sorry Wes, I don't know of a good source....except that you'll just have to keep checking your local Craiglist or eBay and see what's available. It took me a good 7 or 8 years of part time searching to find mine, and only because it has the right color and condition at the right price, the owner lives relatively close to me, and my spouse agrees to let me enjoy it while it is taking up one precious space in our garage. Good luck to you!
The first pick? I call it the Mercedes Benz Concord. Or at least that's what my dad called it. I love it! 😊
Brett, if you ever need advice, just email me ...mbownersforlife@bellsouth.net
most of the time these need the following:
- a valve adjustment
-the bolt in the back of the intake that goes to the aneroid compensator replaced
-the EGR removed and cleaned, or a plate made to seal the gap between the EGR and the intake
-fuel filters, if not already done
-ALDA, or aneroid compensator adjuster calibrated
-spring inside fuel return valve stretched out
-cam and injection pump timing checked if needed.
-check for any sticking brake calipers
what colors?
I think head gasket on m102 or m03 is more common issue. I solved mine making a copper head gasket
In California we prefer 1975 and older SL cars because no smog check.
I was glad to hear the 190e,I have a mint 92 2.3 drives silent, great little tank!
I save a ton of money by doing the work myself
yes, that's the only way to survive with a w140! you have to be your own mechanic!
SabbyCat I agree! I have a 94 s500 coupe. Dream machine. My daily is a 92 300sl. Fave car EVER
Often the Original Mercedes Parts are available on these sites.
the 240d is my favorite car on this list

Hi Pierre I would love to see an update to this, given the increase in classic car prices. Thanks Nancy
The w123 240d is from Tenerife :)
Julio R A great looking vehicle .
You left out the 126 chassis 300SD 1983 inline 5 cyl. turbo diesel. I own one and I love the car, easy to work on, will get up and go, and rides smooth! And 25 mpg!
I bought a 560SEC 2 years ago from 89'. Wonderful car the ride quality is superb. Think i'm gonna straight pipe it :D
with straight pipes they are pretty loud..if your exhaust is in good shape i would focus on improving things on the car that are wrong with it...these cars usually need timing chains at 100-150k miles...if you havemt checked your chain yet, you need to
So after about 20.000 km I need to replace it..What are the symptons of a bad timing chain? How can I see that it needs to be replaced? Not that i'm gonna wait till I'm sure it needs to be replaced tho :P Thanks for mentioning it and keep up with your good informative videos!
Cool video. W126 300SD to me was one of the best cars built; kinda sad not to see the 5-cylinder diesel mentioned. I love the 240D, W123 also. I've had two of them. The SD has always been my favorite. I have a 1984 with 752K miles on it. Just bought a 1983 with only 132K, totally restored. Should last me the rest of my life!
its sort of a given the any car with 617 engine is a best value. I tried to focus on some underappreciated models.
It was a good video. Not bashing you or anything. I love them all!
Also, no check engine lights or smog requirements for the 300SD.
in hindsight, I agree. I have been shamed by multiple parties for this.
I have a 1985 300SD and like to take it to you for some work if possible MR Pierre Hedary
Underrated video !
Are any of the recommended models other than the 240d available with manual transmission?
No reference to the W124?
the are good cars for the money....but a really nice one is going to cost more than $5k.
So I made a mistake selling my 300TE 4matic for $1000 in 2012?
that is crazy, I have owned several W124s and never paid that much for one. LoL
I understand that most people probably don't have the patience the tools or the time to learn how to work on these, but that is the best way because a lot of mechanic shops when they see you drive up in a Mercedes they think you have money to burn and they want all of it. Everything you'd need to know is online for free... benzworld forum for every Benz ever made.
I haven’t seen a nice W124 for sale in a long time. Actually there was ONE... still kind of wish I bought it.
777jones - I know the feeling. I’ve just bought a 1995 220E, 90,000 miles. I’m very happy.
great list, i love all of these cars!.
I love old Benzs. They're all dogs, though. The 560s are still drivable today, but even my 450sl fails to keep up with modern cars. They do shine on the highway, though! 😂
Thanks for the info...love the old Benz... Gerry Mayo☺️
you are the best, thank you, I have a problem with the waste of fuel, in addition, there is carbon on the spark plugs, and the burning is not good W126 M103, so what is the best solution for this problem, thank you very much, Sir
Thanks for your opinion on the w201 I think that those are always a good value, as long as they weren't abused. 😎
there are a lot of cheap superficial parts that fail, but overall they are dependable cars

Hi Pierre,
I recently had a small leak on my 560 SEC and had to have the auxiliary water pump replaced.
SLK is a feminine car. no cap.
SLK 230 has the same power to weight as a 300se.
circa 1969 to 73 280 s....w111 and w110....Dad had one from 69 until he passed in 2004 ...all others came and left that one remained an was driven at least 18 miles a day at least 3 times per week has over a million miles in 2004
the durability of these cars explains why people are starting to seek out the w108 today. Your dad was a smart man!
Great video I recently bought an 89 420 SEL
awesome! what colors?
I ha a 1983 and a 1984 300sd. 350k on the first. 375k on the second Brakes oil changes and tires. That was the extent of my expenditures. That 5 cylider would run forever. Bank vault!!

well that's pretty cool! how much longer until you're finished?
Unfortunately many years until it’s finished!
Also mine has the Hydrak transmission in it. Not sure I like that part though
you'll love it, Chad, a lot of fun to drive.
Just got a 90’ 300se for my first car 🔥
I have a '76 240D 115, and an '82 240D w123, both with 4 speed manual tranny's, daily drivers,...BULLET PROOF!!! That's why they're still using them as taxis across the pond. BTW, BOTH cars cost me $12k together, but separately. DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH!
I bought an 88 300se a year ago. I spent money tuning it up, but 9 months later I also had to replace the water pump. Ouch! What other potential costs am I looking at me wonders? It has 251 k miles now.
What you think about the w126 300SD from 1981-1985 ? I’d want the 1985 example of course
would love to hear your opinion on the SLK250 CDI Twin turbo.
Well done!!
I tried to read as many as I can and take your responses for consideration on future videos.

if we lived in a society where people actually appreciated things that were well made we would see many more of these on the road.
I agree. The problem is that most younger drivers just want to jump in and go, without thinking of certain but important maintenance items that are a MUST in these classics. We seem to live in a throwaway society. (Until very recently I still used my dad's 1950's aluminum-cased Black & Decker electric drill.)
yes we do.
Even though the 2.6 is quicker off the line the 2.5 far more dependable but I love them both
2.5 diesel manual...awesome car!
the old deisels are smoke wagon pigs that measure acceleration with a calendar and most are rust buckets. the 300e has flex disks that rot and break and drive shafts that tend to vibrate and or warp.
So 7 years later, does the recommendation still hold?😀 C220 W202 owner.

Rocking a 1990 300se like it better than my old 89 420 sel
The 300 SE engine is bullet proof. One time mine leaped out of the car and took a bullet for me. The problem was getting it and its ego back in the engine compartment.
lol!!
How would an 88 300CE stack up? Mine has 78k miles original very nice paint.🤔
I've been thinking early 70's 250c is a good value. Good deal for a classic coupe.
1986-1991, and the 500SEL and the 560SEL have the same transmission, which can only be removed from the car as a complete unit attached to the engine.
truthfully, they are all great cars, and are all worth saving.
Agreed on all. Had a 201 and drive 84 126 SD NOW
I think I am in your camp, Les
Hi,what about 92 w140 turbo diesel.. lol
Bought a new one on 1976, couldn’t keep it out of the shop. Sold it and bought an Oldsmobile Cutless.
What do you think about the 1985 380 SE? And was that the only year they released the 380 SE?
I have a 93 w201 and 99 w202. I love the w201 way more although its in the shop currently for a head gasket. I wish I could swap engines between them to have a w201kompressor!!!
too many electronics
i agree..
Great video
I'm glad to hear talking about my cars, I have a 300SE 1991 daily use and 560SEL 1991 long distance out of town, W126 really a legend will not be repeated. 🌷
that's right! and that's why we have to preserve these cars.
If the transmission goes out on these older cars, will it not be a headache ?
You put the 107 in your top five but in another video you said its a model to avoid (75-77) ??
Wish you were in the UK - I'd bring my 97' W202 C250 TD for you to service and repair.
does your c250 use an om605 engine?
@@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753 It does sir. Unfortunately the car is now succumbing to the ravages of rust at 21 years of age from the UK climate and winter salt.
But the OM 605 - 5 cylinder still pulls as when new and is utterly reliable. Awesome engine with a Turbo and Intercooler fitted, the torque from standstill is unreal..Regards!
Are in Quebec Pierre?
I looking for a old diesel here in Australia, hard to find and not cheap.
Love your videos. Suprised no W123 or W124 in the equation.
I mentioned the 240D...but these cars are getting expensive...when I say value, I mean inexpensive (:
