Dear Heart: you play this magnificently. The organ is a gorgeous instrument. This piece has sentimental value to me. When I was in college (my freshman year), I was friends with a music student who was an organ major. He was gifted - a true musical artist. Many women pursued him (he was gay...) but I never did. We understood each other. He was preparing for a upcoming recital and he invited me to hear him rehearse one evening(he never invited anybody...). He was going to play the Little Fugue as his encore....and he dedicated it to me. He died in the early 2000's. Sharing in loving memory of Leander Chapin Claflin III (Biff).
_Soli Deo Gloria_
The organ was restored again in the years 2014/2015. The Flentrop company carried out this work. This mainly concerned a restoration of the old pipework, which had been seriously affected by lead corrosion.
Bach would be proud of you
Nothing short of magnificent! Absolutely stellar! My only regret is that I am not there in person! Amazing performance!
Thereˋs nothing more to say in addition to your very well formulated statement.
@@canislupus8995 Thank you! Can I also mention that I love your username and profile picture?
These ancient organs are too heavy to play. The manuals have hard keys to press. Congratulations, Jonathan, you managed to overcome this challenge. Only for the strong and brave. 😁👍🙌💪🎶😘🙏🙋🏻♀️
I have never heard complaints about a too heavy action on our historic instruments by continental organists....
I visited this organ in 1982 just before the restoration. Its was truly a beast then, and in almost unplayable condition. Walcha, however, didn't seem to have a problem with it!
Now it is just glorious.
@@grahaml6668 Almost all of our historic instruments are restored/reconstructed within the lifespan of one generation...
the only complaints I heard about old organs was about response after hitting a key and how quick the tone produced. Once spoke to prof organplayer telling me that some organs it lasts 0.2 to 0.3 sec or even more. He said that playing such organs was a psin in the @ss as your fingers are pressing keys but your ears hear something completely else....for some its impossible to play such organs as one can get mixed up completely. He said : just play by heart, dont listen as it will wreck your performance...😉
@@Baard2000 That were probably the not so old organs with pneumatic key-action...
Ah!!! Thank you brothers for that Beautiful Bach!! And for letting me see that marvelous Beautiful organ!!!🤗🤗🥰🙏🙏🙏
My second favorite Bach organ piece. Unusual delay before the final chord, but I think I like it.
Wonderful. I'm always impressed how you change from RCO/AGO to BDO parallel so easily. I'm pretty sure I'd have hit rate of under 50% even if I was looking 🤣 - then again, I'm not among the top organists on the planet.
Lovely rendition of one of Bach's most delightful pieces! It's particularly nice to hear it played on a European organ of his time! It's fun to imagine that one could have heard this fugue on this organ, sitting in this church around the years 1703-1707 and it would have sounded almost the same! Thanks to Jonathan for this, and to Tom for the views of this beautiful old church!
And thanks to Flentrop Orgelbouw for saving this Instrument :D
What is amazing to me is how much he can adapt to the various organs and then play them so magnificently. Bravo!
Ecccchhhooooo ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Bach and Scott bring us a wonderful four minute respite from this utterly mad world.
Back in Bach’s day that had people who’s only job was to change stops for the organist and here in the modern day they all have to do it themselves and still manage without skipping a beat
In every way…magnificent….
This is a great organ. I was there once for a visit. I heard an organ concert of the local organist Pieter van Dijk.
BRAVISSIMO. GRAZIE.
That struggle he puts in the piece just makes it more fabulous
Helmut Walcha also recorded a lot of Bach organ pieces on this magnificent organ.
And Fernando Germani; these two luminaries made the organ famous worldwide with their recordings, Germani's World Record Club LP with its dark pink depiction of the organ's ruckpositive case.
Wonderful & rich sounding Bach. 👏👏👏👏 This piece always reminds me of grammar school music class (favorite class!) - listen & count how many times you hear the fugue theme. 😅 Thanks for sharing. ❤❤ 🎹🎶
I wonder what the Bach would say about the impact his music has had over all the years.---Tom: it's humbling to imagine all the people that are fortunate to be able to worship in such a grand building.---Thank-you to both of you once again.
As always, a wonderful performance.
WOW!!! Such a stunning piece on such a grand and majestic organ. Thank you Jonathan for this. I so enjoyed watching and seeing this magnificent Church and organ. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Absolutely amazing Jonathan!😁👍👏👏👏👏👏
Magnifica esecuzione 👏👏👏👏👏👏impeccabile come solo tu sai essere 👍👏👏👏 grazie
Hallo!!
You did a fantastic job Jonathan!
I think not easy to play on That old organ but it was Great as always.
And you where in the Netherlands!
Thanks beautiful brothers.
With Love from the Netherlands.
As always, just the best!
BRAVO!!!
Brilliant performance!
경이롭고 장엄한 연주, 멋진 소리와 장소, 영상 편집에 늘 감사드립니다! ^^
What a wonderful opportunity to play this beautiful, historic instrument. Great video!
Arguably the best recording this wonderful organ has sounded in since Piet Kee left the post in 1985 after 33 years as organist, then making a CD for Chandos in the early 90s. Superb playing Jonathan and kudos to Tom for his high quality recording equipment.
What a performance and on such an amazing instrument. Bravissimo! 💜
Very nice indeed, thanks Jonathan & Tom. Lovely hearing Bach on a great 18th century organ.
Very well recorded byTom - sound would have been difficult to get right with the position of the organ very high up.
Magnificent! Such a beautiful piece, on that amazing organ! Great interpretation, that final Picardy third was goosebumping!
👋👋👋👋👍👍👍. Surperb performance with a sublime organ sound. Cheer !
I kept humming this tune long after you had finished.
Thank you
I'm ashamed to admit that I'd never even heard of this splendid organ. Many thanks for a wonderful performance.
Well once again, the Scott Brothers have 'pulled out all the stops' and given us another amazing video of a beautiful performance on an incredible musical instrument.
Jolie morceau d orgue 👍👍👏👏
Great music by Bach and fantastic organist !
Bravísimo. Aplausos y saludos a Jonathan y a Tom desde México. Magnífico obsequio musical. Juve Flores.
J’adore cet Musique
A very beautiful Bach Fugue absolutely wonderfully played loves the organ sound thank you🍃
I consider this piece to be one of Bach’s finest compositions.
Ooooh... I loved that little "flaire" you added right at the very end. That was a really nice touch.
Thanks, Jonathan!
Magnífico, EXCELENTE performance. Mil gracias Jonathan!!!!
Wonderful it truly is,
Wonderful - this brightened up my day, thank you!
Never heard it done down a half step like this. Very nice!
Absolutely fantastic rendition on one of the world's greatest organs! I've loved this organ ever since I bought a CD back in the '90s of Piet Kee playing it! If only Schnitger had retained the original function of the Pedal 24' Principaal as a 32' rather than reconfiguring it as a much less useful 21-1/3' quint, even if it had to stop at the original low-F if there was no practical way to add 5 additional pipes to complete the newer 1725 pedal range to low-C.
The Pedal 24' was originally a manual stop beginning on Contra F in Van Hagerbeer's concept of 1645, not a pedal stop. the organ builder Strumphler tried to convert it into a 32' stop in the 1780s but it didn't work and his wooden pipes lie dormant at the bottom of the staircase. The 24' and 12' quints (64' and 32' harmonics) provide an extraordinary richness in homophonic music.
Wonderful as always! It's impossible to hear and watch this video just once! There are so many details to be admired! Thank you for this beautiful gift!
Bravo maestro...!!
Johnathan you are absolutely the best!!
Thank you Jonathan and Tom for another fantastic performance. Your talents are greatly appreciated and enjoyed.
Dreaming....
To be present in this divine temple and to hear this exceptional music...
Thank you, dear Jonathan! ⏳
Yours sincerely, Marcela
In the footsteps of the great Helmut Walcha. A brilliant performance on a wonderful organ
and Fernando Germani, whose 1950s recordings were my introduction to this incomparable instrument.
I have always loved this piece. Thank you!
❤❤❤❤
A favorite Bach piece on a great organ. Blown away again by Jonathan's playing. (Congrats to Flentrop for the restoration. We have a 1989 Flentrop at the Holy Name Catholic Cathedral here). From Chicago, U.S.A.
To David James:
Your original comment about a slowing down of the tempo, just before the entry of the left hand, seems to have disappeared, from my screen, at least.
Perhaps you were picking up on an agogic accent - the last kind mentioned in this quote from Wikepedia?
>
"There are four kinds of agogic accents :
.
Longer notated duration of a note, for example, a whole note/semibreve (four beats in common time) among quarter notes/crotchets (each of which gets one beat).
.
Extended duration of a note within its full-time value (without altering the tempo). For example, players of organ and harpsichord (which do not allow the use of dynamic accents) can emphasize one of a sequence of staccato quarter notes by making it less staccato (that is, making one note longer to emphasize it).
.
Extended duration of a note with the effect of temporarily slowing down the tempo (rubato or rallentando).
.
Delayed onset of a note, for example by doing a pause before starting a note."
I never come in Alkmaar but since I live in the Netherlands and play the organ as well, I am definitely going to this church one day! Hopefully they will let me play haha
This is one of my favorite pieces by Bach. I absolutely love listening to and watching you play!
Wow such a beautiful piece of music and that organ….. marvellous! Thank you so very much, greetings from the Netherlands!
Beautiful playing and video. Thanks Jonathan and Tom.
Amazing performance, Jonathan - I just love the sound of this wonderful instrument! Please, "Wir glauben all an einen Gott BWV 680" sometime in the near future? Best wishes to you both, as always.
Complimenti, eccellente esecuzione. Questa Fuga a 4 voci è l'ennesima testimonianza della genialità di J. S. Bach che è stato e rimarrà sempre uno dei più grandi compositori di tutti i tempi.
This song is never disappointing. It's always amazing! 😍
Simplemente maravillosa, la música de Bach es sublime y la interpretación es fabulosa, felicidades
When I found your channel, I could only hope you would play this piece. I just knew you had to have this video on your awesome channel. Such a classic, and what do I see ? recorded in my own country !! What a honor.
Jonathan has also uploaded the same piece played on the TC Lewis organ at the Crooked Spire Church in England. Its a big former concert organ originally from Glasgow City Hall and then moved in 1963 to the present church and it enables John to use a wide registration. Worth a listen to.
@@epincion Thank you very much for your recommendation ! I will make sure to watch and listen to that ! I wish you all the best for the coming year, greetings from the Netherlands.
Schnitger family organ are the best!!!
❤️❤️❤️
Fascinating that the casework has doors on it to enclose the pipes. Is this unique to this instrument?
No - its quite common on organs of its era - kept dust out when not in use.
Quite common in The Netherlands.
There is one recording on UA-cam where a recital at St Laurens begins with the asthmatic squeaking and groaning of unoiled hinges and pulleys as the organ's shutters are opened!
😀😀😀❤❤❤👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
High above all the blood and mud of the battlefields, there was another war going on.
A war for superiority in the air between the daredevils of the sky, known as the aces.
Among them, one man and his plane stand out:
The Red Baron.
Get my Fokker Dr.1 ready… for I have been summoned!
EXQUISITA.OBRA.DE.BACH
This sounds like a boss battle theme
Who ever the organist is he did a fantastic job. And I would think Bach is a popular composer. Keep up the great playing ☺️.
'Who ever the organist is' - loved that since Jonathan is one of the top 10 most well known modern organists
A suggestion, Brian - spend a little time watching some other videos from the hundreds on this UA-cam channel. I promise that you will be spellbound and forever admire ‘this organist’ Jonathan Scott
Total geile Performance!
Ich verstehe aber nicht, warum solche Organisten ihre Noten heutzutage nicht einfach von einem Tablet ablesen...?
Maybe a little brighter registration for the pedal? But excellent nonetheless as usual.
