@evaristus4821, while it's easy to underestimate the role of ceremonial figures in modern governance, a deeper examination reveals a more nuanced reality. As Uffe Elleman-Jensen, a prominent Danish political figure, aptly noted, Queen Margrethe II played a pivotal role in Denmark's diplomatic and business endeavors. Consider the intricacies of international relations and trade. The queen's state visits often served as a catalyst for opening doors in foreign markets, a notable example being the Indian market. Her presence and the allure of royal engagements, such as the opportunity for Indian businessmen to be photographed with her or to attend meticulously orchestrated royal dinners, provided a unique form of soft diplomacy. These events were not mere social gatherings; they were strategically planned to facilitate political dialogues and foster business relationships. This approach reflects the historical evolution of constitutional monarchies, where the role of royalty transitioned from rulers to symbolic representatives and servants of the state. The Danish monarchy, in particular, has been instrumental in this transformation, recognizing that their purpose is to serve the country rather than to be served by it. The queen's abdication marks the end of an era where her diplomatic acumen and ability to navigate complex political landscapes with grace and poise were invaluable assets to Denmark. Her contributions, while perhaps not always conspicuous, were significant in shaping the nation's international relations and trade.

Queen Margrethe is a few years younger than my mother, and my mom remembers her when they were young women at the velodrome in Copenhagen. My uncle was racing along with his best friend, and things really heated up after midnight when the races got hot, and the room got steamy. Because my mom had family in the race, she was in the center of the ring, as was the crown princess and her friends, and true to danish fashion they were all drinking and smoking and cheering quite loudly and having a great time out there. She was a fun lady, that is to say the queen, and very down to earth. Her biography that came out in 2002 was titled (brilliantly I thought) “Dronning Margrethe II: Mother Artist Woman”. Long live the Queen. 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰
Our Queen is and has been a gift. Nobody Can reach the level that our Queen has. Full respect for her to step Down. This is not Disney and we are in 2024 and she is not owned. She Can think of what she needs and wants. 💝
I think the reason the monarchy in Denmark is seen so positively is because the people of Denmark feel they are part of the royal family. Best wishes for the wise Queen Margaret's good health for many years to come and for her continued presence in the country as a support for the new King as he takes charge of a country many of us admire!
Yeah, they don't dress up in full medieval coronation costume, while telling the peasant nation to cut their expenses to pull the nation through financial hardship. 😋
As a Dane, I can only say I respect our queens decision to step down at this moment. Let's not forget that she has held the position for over 50 years and is currently (until January 15. 2024), the longest ruling female monarch. As a result we get a relative young king with many years left in him, to take care of all the responsibilities that come with being a monarch and he in turn, he retains a "hotline" to the previous monarch which to most of us, will still be our queen (we will actually end up with two queens so we are a bit spoiled). This is how leadership should be parsed on in both monarchies and politics. Not abrupt, but in due time with ample opportunity to transfer responsibility in an orderly fashion with the option of continued counseling for some time.
Love the queen. When I heard it I got sad but it is a very wise decision. She will be there for Frederik and hopefully she'll have many good creative years ❤
Queen Margarethe has been a wonderful monarch and I wish her well in her retirement. I had noticed that even after her back surgery, she needed the use of a cane and had to sit in a presentation line. That must be very hard to hold your composure and style when in so much pain. She has been a great Queen and she will be there to assist her son and his Queen Consort in the beginning of their reign. I hope this gives her more time to also impart her wisdom to Prince Christian for when his turn comes in many years.
Her Majesty Queen Margrethe has long been respected as a Monarch, especially from here in the UK, where our Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II vowed to do her duty onto death, which she did..... Her Majesty Queen Margrethe is the last Queen Regnant of a European country, and I wish Her Majesty well in her abdication and 'retirement'. GUD BEVARE DANMARK ❤❤
Margrethe is a lovely lady. I am 79 and I know how tired I get, so at 83, nobody should be doing a full time job. The late Queen Elizabeth at 96, was a champion, but she had to be mega weary towards the end. Charles has become King in his mid 70s. So much better to bring in a younger monarch, for his sake.

Choosing to step down after serving the country for decades, allowing a mature successor to step up is very different from abdicating and leaving an unprepared successor to fill the void. I wish them all the best.
I had a German family member who was born in the late 1800s. When he was still quite young he worked on a ship as a cabin boy. One day while out a huge storm happened that wrecked their ship. They limped into the main harbor of Denmark. The Queen at that time had the habit of having breakfast each Sunday with a different segment of her populace. This particular Sunday the Queen chose to share her breakfast with the shipwrecked sailors. My family member always refereed to this as the 'time he had breakfast with the Queen of Denmark".
Not saying they're soldiers, but royal families even constitutional ones do have to do what most call traditional professional labour, they do write letters hours a day, have speeches and meetings like any ceo or office job would do, it isn't just eating grapes in a hot pool with servants.
God bless the Queen of Denmark - another extremely wise lady. May she enjoy her retirement and long live her successor, Prince Frederick and Princess Mary
Sad to see beloved Queen Margrethe stepping down, but the Crown Prince will be a worthy successor and popular with his people. I remember the excitement on the streets of Copenhagen when I was there as Frederik's 18th birthday was being celebrated.
We will be fine, she has trained him well, and she has been giving him more and more responsibilities for years. Hes ready! And they start young, the next generation Prince Christian (soon to be Crown Prince Christian) just turned 18 a couple of months ago, and he started right off with joining his father and grandmother for meetings with the Councillors of State and the official duties, he will be expected to assume, even while continuing his education and military service.

A wise person will always know when it’s time to pass on the sceptre. Her Majesty is doing what is best for her kingdom. Besides, the Kingdom of Denmark is in great hands, with an educated and intelligent, ascending king, and his brilliant Tasmanian wife [who became fluent in Danish (and from my - Swiss - perspective, being fluent in seven languages, Danish is a very tough one to learn)]. All the best to Queen Margrethe!
An Australian Queen? Will the new king's first decree be that Fosters must now be served at all state dinners? (Yes, I know he has his own vineyard in France but surely nothing can compete with the amber nectar.)
The future Danish king has actually been seen in his in-laws home in Hobart, with a couple of Australian wine bottles in arms, so we can assume that his fondness for wine will indeed be profitable for the South Australian wine region.
Good for her! I think the whole idea of a person feeling obligated to serve in any role until they die is ridiculous. If they want to do so, good for them! If they need to step down - no problem! I think all the ancient positions will soon no longer exist in such seriousness. The Pope and Monarchs are changing - and that's a good thing.
I also think people who seek to shirk responsibility and prefer to choose their role in life should not have positions of authority. Especially when we can elect people into power who then abuse it and become figureheads of national ridicule. On the other hand, those who take up their role and hold to becoming a part of living history like the late Queen of England, who passed the crown onto her son, should be praised for having the backbone to carry both a nations pride, legacy, and history. We cannot slide into relativist living. There must be standards that do not change, or change so slowly that the modern world can hold itself accountable to those who went before us.
Tradition is very importent and bring prowed to both Queens, Kings and people. I do think her body hurts to much and she have said "as long as I can" not to my death. She does right I belive, she is not and never been a weak Queen.

So when a government thinks that a new monarch will be easier to either bully around or more willing to promote its partisan policies it should just advise when a monarch is "too old"? Back in the 1980s there were constant cries from tabloids and certain public figures that Queen Elizabeth should abdicate in favor of "younger" and more "relevant" Charles and Diana.

I think, the death of her dear friend QEII and her serious back surgery early this year, and the limitations it has brought, made her reconsider, as she has always been vehement, that Danish monarch do not abdicate. Indeed, our last abdication was 500 years ago, and that 1 wasnt exactly voluntary! She has always been about duty above all else, she would only step down, if she believes, she can no longer do the job to the fullest extent, and that Frederik will serve us better. She has been our Queen all my life, and despite what some might say (tho very few here in Denmark) she has always worked very hard and served the country and us very well. I have no doubt, Frederik will do the same. They have always been of the ppl, not above the ppl.

Most received prison sentences of under four years. Lutheranism spread through all of Scandinavia during the 16th century as the monarchs of Denmark-Norway and Sweden adopted the faith. Through Baltic-German and Swedish rule, Lutheranism also spread into Estonia and Latvia. It also began spreading into Lithuania Proper with practically all members of the Lithuanian nobility converting to Lutheranism or Calvinism, so no legitimate nobility is in Denmark, it is heretical window dressing. Ennoblement is the conferring of nobility-the induction of an individual into the noble class. Currently only a few kingdoms still grant nobility to people through the Vatican and the true faith as founded by Christ Matthew 16:13

Which Australian wife? Crown Princess Mary is a Danish citizen. She was required to of course take up Danish citizenship in becoming Crown Princess and to give up her previous citizenship.
I don't think heirs to the throne should be marrying foreign commoners to be honest. Either they should marry local born people or foreign royalty. I wouldn't be comfortable bowing to an Australian non royal as a Dane. The Crown Princess is Queen consort I guess since her husband is the new King.

The Queen has had an amazing time of service to the people. From a foreigner's viewpoint, her decision is well based and admirable. No one should have to do any job past her age, and she has a well qualified and dynamic son and daughter in law to take over the responsibilities of the position.
I live in Sweden and got surprised but not shocked. She did the right thing. She is not young anymore and she is worth to be able to just take it easy from now on.

She is such a beautiful intelligent creative woman. As an Australian Ive admired her and followed her artistic endeavours.
And with her abdication, Australia will now have a queen consort on the Danish throne with Frederick's wife Mary
What responsibilities?

The Pope?

The Pope is a monarch, elected, granted! The previous Pope, who abdicated, is still living, and is styled Pope Emeritus! The Pope’s absolute power applies only to matters of doctrine!
