  • In this video series we are flying the impeccably modeled A2A Piper Cherokee 180 from Tangier Island, VA. to First Flight Airport (KFFA) located on the Outer Banks in Kill Devil Hills, NC. This is also the inaugural flight in our brand new FSX Steam Edition Simulator!!! Loving the improved performance of FSX-SE!
    In this part 2 of 3 we are cruising southbound toward First Flight Airport (KFFA) at an altitude of 3,500 feet taking in the scenic Delmarva Peninsula and surrounding area. We continue to discuss the details of our transition to FSX-Steam Edition.
    The Tangier Island scenery and Kill Devil Hills scenery are part of the Orbx North American Freeware Airports and North American Land Class Scenery packages.
    For more information on FS MaNiA hardware and software specs, please click on the "about" tab on the FS MaNiA UA-cam channel page.
    Thanks very much for tuning in, enjoy the flight, and kindest from Tim G., FS MaNiA

      It doesn't get any better during the descent and landing either. I tried real hard to cover a lot of information (way too much for such a short flight) leaving precious little time for actual piloting the aircraft. I hope at least it this series will be informative and entertaining in spite of the poor piloting performance. Ugghh! Tim

      +FS MaNiA It reminds me of one time I miss read the thousand hand on the altimeter going into Kabi leveled off 1000 feet below my minimum and almost got a face full of c-130! Thank God for nice controllers and situational awareness!

    Your new set up looks great Tim. Really like the idea of a "throw back" VOR flight now and then. Great that your keeping the door open for P3D down the line when the new upgrade is released but I can see why you chose Steam for now. Also, as most of your followers and friends have commented, don't even think about repeating phrases or word combinations. Just keep talking to us as if we were sitting there next to you. That makes it real, and one of the many reasons we look forward to each and every video you produce.
    Dennis

      Hey Dennis! Great to hear from you. I definitely will be checking out P3D and XPlane 11. A man can't have too many flight simulators can he?? As always, I really appreciate your encouragement. I look forward to many more flights with you and the rest of the gang coming along. Best regards, Tim

    I really recommend the P3D leap. I did it a year ago (from Steam-FSX) and I haven't looked back. P3D feels like a modern FSX with better lighting, HDR, cockpit shadows, menues etc. My controls and yoke worked exactly the same. And all aircraft (especially A2A, Carenado/Alabeo) looks twice as good with HDR. All of my Orbx worked and 95% of my aircraft, so I didn't lose any money there. I did have to buy the the A2A Commanche again, but it was worth it since it's my favorite. Since the leap I've bought the P3D version of A2A C172 Trainer etc. and I'd luv to get this Cherokee too. This cockpit was love at first sight for me. But, I'm not buying anything more until I know more about P3D v4. There was another source, this week, saying that it's coming very soon and that it will be 64-bit. And with X-Plane 11, DTG Flight Simulator and DCS these are truly exciting times for us aviation/simulation-fans. :)

      Hey Jim, that was pretty embarrassing to lose drift 500' from altitude unnoticed. But I have flown a fair number of short flights at 3000 and even 2500 feet to stay under a cloud layer. Distraction is bad business in the cockpit. I cite the Eastern Flight 401 crash as case in point. A distraction with a burnt out light and an unnoticed disconnect of the autopilot caused a 32,000 hour Captain to descend into the everglades! (Wikipedia details below) Eastern Air Lines Flight 401 was a Lockheed L-1011-1 Tristar jet that crashed into the Florida Everglades at 11:42 pm December 29, 1972, causing 101 fatalities (99 initial crash fatalities, two died shortly afterward). The captain, along with one of two flight crew members, two of 10 flight attendants, and 97 of 163 passengers, died; 75 passengers and crew survived. The crash occurred as a result of the entire flight crew becoming preoccupied with a burnt-out landing gear indicator light, and failing to notice the autopilot had inadvertently been disconnected. As a result, while the flight crew was distracted with the indicator problem, the aircraft gradually lost altitude and crashed. It was the first crash of a widebody aircraft and at the time, the second-deadliest single-aircraft disaster in the United StatesIt can happen to the most experienced and the best of the best... so I guess I should be glad I caught it in time! Whew! Best regards, Tim G., FS MaNiA

      I fly a radio-controlled plane with FPV ("first person video"). My monitor has an on-screen display showing airspeed, altitude, rate of climb, distance from home, compass heading, GPS coordinates, etc. While I was busy and distracted looking at all these fancy numbers at the top of the screen - I descended my $1,000 plane into the very top of a giant 150' eucalyptus tree! Luckily, my plane fell out of the tree 7 weeks later. Next time, I'll pay more attention!

      @FSMaNiA  7 років тому

      Ouch!! I know how you feel Jim, I have a Blade Chroma Quadcopter that I crashed a couple of times. Fortunately only minor damage easily repaired. Depth perception can be a tricky thing when flying with a wide angle camera lens. Distraction is bad for business when flying anything. I assume every airplane is trying to kill me and for real world flying I don't stop scanning the panel for signs of trouble. Mishaps in the simulation and model world are embarrassing but normally not deadly (thankfully). Best regards, Tim G., FS MaNiA

    Tim, how much of a leap between FSX box and Steam? Like FS 2004 to FSX? I love FSX, but sometimes I wish I had stayed with FS 2004. Don't want to endure thrash between FSX Box and Steam. I am considering putting Steam on my new computer. A lot of good points! You are a heck of a great salesman :)) And YES... be yourself! Forget the UA-cam haters. You are a superb flightsim professional and professional pilot! Keep those wings level, Shawn Lynch

    • @FSMaNiA
      @FSMaNiA  7 років тому

      Hey Shawn, I would have to say FSX box to FSX-SE is the easiest and least resistant route to take for transitioning away from FSX Box. Also I think it is the least expensive as well. I would suggest watching Jordan King's tutorial videos on Steam. They are very detailed and well produced (although he says "go ahead" a fair amount). I don't think you will regret giving Steam a try. It should hold us until the next generation of Flight Simulation is further along.
      Thank you very much for your encouragement! Best regards, Tim

    I was delighted when I saw this since I have both the A2A comanche and the Cherokee for P3D and enjoy GPS free flying. My favorite kind, in fact! You mentioned a bug where the instrument light is stuck on in your first video. I'm wondering if you've run the A2A updater program a2asimulations.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=57819 as this may help. Additionally, I noticed your autopilot seems to let the wings wobble quite a bit. It might just be the weather (I'm not sure how breezy it was when you recorded it), but the other possibility is that your yoke settings are too insensitive, which also makes the autopilot and control response sloppy. In P3D, A2A planes are supposed to have yaw, pitch and roll control sensitivity set at maximum 100%, with a very small (1-3%) deadzone. This *might* also be true for FSX SE.

    • @FSMaNiA
      @FSMaNiA  7 років тому

      Hi Arkady, Thank you for sharing this information. I am using FSUIPC so I have the controls disabled in FSX. I also have a Saitek X-55 HOTAS joystick that lets me adjust the sensitivities of the various axis. I currently have them set linear. I also can turn down the Active Sky turbulence. It's probably set okay for a heavy jet but this light Piper is getting hammered. It's really very close to being realistic on a gusty day with unstable air associated with a high pressure weather system on a good visibility day. I will try some of these suggestions to see if I can tame this bird a bit. Thank you very much and best regards, Tim G., FS MaNiA

    The 'oil platform' you saw off the coast of Virginia Beach is the Chesapeake Light or "Ches Light" as the locals call it. I was stationed for many years at a unit in Little Creek (Virginia Beach area) and we used to use the Ches Light as a visual beacon for teaching our new operators navigation.... out around the light and back.Wikipedia has a decent write up with pictures - interesting history. Its great to see you back!!

    • @FSMaNiA
      @FSMaNiA  7 років тому

      That is so cool Robert! I really appreciate the information. I had not heard of any oil drilling rigs off the Mid-Atlantic states... although I recall hearing of some political debates regarding the issue. I'll be sure to check out the Wikipedia write up (making a note now).
      I know of another off-shore light off of the NC Coast at Frying Pan Shoals 29 miles southeast of Southport. There use to be a light ship anchored to mark the eastern tip of the treacherously shallow shoal. Later they built a platform structure similar to on oil drilling platform. The platform was decommissioned and replaced by a buoy in 2003. The government sold the platform in 2010 at a surplus auction to a private individual for $85,000. It is being converted into a bed & breakfast for adventurous folks. It is on my list for a weekend getaway in the not too distant future.
      It's great to be back on the FS MaNiA flight deck! Thanks again for the excellent information on Ches Light! Best regards, Tim G., FS MaNiA

    Truly enjoy all the fun facts you must spend hours gathering, thanks. "What the h#&*" Must say I LoL when you finally seen the 3k on the alt. Those old auto pilots was a pain in the butt back in the 60's many of them got disconnected never to be hooked up. Try clicking the head phone jacks A2A modeled them too.

      Hey Ronald!! Hope your doing well! I was pretty surprised to see a 500' uncommand descent! I'm just glad I didn't say something much worse.. I would have had to insert a loud censor beeeepppp . I have flown 8 different Cherokees and none of them had an autopilot. I knew about the headphones in the A2A. What I was really doing when I mentioned putting on headphones was switching to my headset mic in lieu of the Yeti mike. The A2A headsets are great for quieting the noise in the cockpit, but I think they take out too much of the engine and environmental noises. So I just changed the mike to make it sound like a headset. I'm always tinkering with the audio settings on the videos and never quiet satisfied.I'm always curious about the places I'm flying over or in to... so I do enjoy researching with Google to learn a little something along the way. Glad you joined me on this trip. I will have part 3 completed and uploaded very soon. Stay tuned and best regards, Tim G., FS MaNiA
