- Falsetto is inescapable in pop music - and we like it that way. Here’s the science of why we can’t get enough of falsetto, explained.
Glass-shattering falsettos are a mainstay in every popular genre of music today, from R&B to pop to hip-hop. With vocalists like The Weeknd and Charlie Puth dominating the Billboard Hot 100, it may seem like falsetto’s popularity is a recent development in music. But impossibly high voices male voices have been coveted-after for centuries - and there’s a scientific explanation behind why we’re so obsessed with those high notes. With leading vocal coach and technician Justin Stoney, we break down the difference between falsetto and head voice, pop music’s infatuation with falsetto vocals, and the special appeal of the male falsetto.

MJ and Weeknd have the best falsetto I have ever heard it feels so pure, smooth, and natural
The Dream, prince.... don't forget them. The dream has a song called falsetto
The only iconic falsetto is Barry Gibb's.
@@rodrigo445678 Year since he discovered it there were almost no Bee Gees songs without it. And it is just awesome how he can sing these high notes so clearly.

Summary: Vocal contrast. More dramatic = more emotion. When the genre is hip hop and you mix in the airy falsetto from a male voice that you're usually used to hearing a chest voice from, the contrast makes you pay more attention to it.
explains the success of brostep and other heavy dance music in 2010-14
Am I the only one who's horrified to realise that they haven't included Michael Jackson's legendary falsettos in this list? The pieces in Billie Jean was phenomenal.
💯💯
Sharan Gayathrinathan most of Billie Jean isn’t falsetto . He’s singing in chest voice he just has a high voice . Similar to a woman
@@DiggaStiggaTheGamer no Michael was in falsetto in billie jean. There are songs that he is in chest voice that is deeper and sexier. 10000 WATTs check it out.

I know lol it's like all falsetto
this aged well.
Maxwell sung an entire song in falsetto and it was perfection. Check out his cover version of “This woman’s work”. Masterpiece! No man can top that
Actually the entire song is not in falsetto, the majority of it is, but in the pre-chorus he does go into his chest voice. It indeed is beautiful though!
It's cool Leonardo DiCaprio is also a vocal coach in his spare time

Freddie Mercury's Falsetto must be crazy then.
His vocal range is insane, I remember hearing how high he went in Don't stop me now and it definitely makes an impact. Then there's roger taylor.
If you haven’t listened already definitely check out Cool Cat - Queen. Freddie’s in falsetto throughout the entire song and it’s ridiculously amazing

I pressed so fast when I saw The Weeknd XO🖤
So that's why people start to talk hight voice with someone who they like
Oleg Terehov well don’t watch this video
actually people talk deeper when talking to someone they find attractive
girls (usually) talk with higher voice with their crushes
and boys (usually) talk with deeper voice with their crushes
its like a way to show our feminine/masculine energy.
Trang Hà that’s not always true. I’ve caught myself using a lighter pitch when talking to girls i like. I’ve always thought that it makes it easier for them to sympathize with me.
Now i sound like i was begging or something. I meant it makes it easier for them to listen to me
@@monokid2932 that's just you.
I don't know if I love falsetto in general but I love the weeknd's falsetto
I really truly appreciate how important hip hop is portrayed as a very important example and leading one at that at fusing all the music of the past into now and using all the tools it takes to make a piece of music.
The last time I was this early I could go outside to buy tolietpaper
No one:
Me alone in the dark room at 12am: "Hah" trying to create high pitch "Falsetto" voice.
Also me: wait thats bullshit.
So yall just left out Michael Jackson, the KING OF FALSETTO !!
Love the data and research done for this video.

OHHH Justin Stoney 😍❤❤❤❤❤ best vocal coach, love his videos online!
Thanks for creating and sharing this super interesting video.
King of the Fall by The Weeknd is the best examples of dark lyrics sung with an angelic voice.
Insider: Why do you love the sound of falsetto?
Me: What is falsetto?!!
It is the sound of man. (apparently)
Those lil reverbs when you stop a song snippet hit my soul
Makes sense why fine line is one of my fav songs
I love The Weeknd's and Charlie Puth's falsetto SO MUCH.
Like Billie Eilish -Ocean Eyes her falsetto makes that song fantastic.
But she’s a girl
"I'm so sorry now you know
Sorry I'm the one that told you so"🎶🎵
This part always gets me.
DRKLGND thats the wrong song
@Jade Burks Both males and females can do a falsetto with their voices...
@@aaleyah3082 women can sing in that range, but technically "falsetto" is a term reserved for male voices.
Wow makes sense now. Thank you, business insider!
Informative .... Thanks 😊
Barry Gibb's Falsetto is my favourite.
"Why you love falsettos"
Billie fans : ...
Billie singing is pretty much male falsetto
Billie Eilish is honestly pretty good overall, her most recent album was pretty good, not everything should be focused on vocal range, her productions pretty great
@Darktyl Billie Eyelash is pretty ok as an artist it’s just her fans that gets on everyone’s nerves
The weekend sings like an angel ! That song hurricane has me such a blessed man
Excellent Thanks
El Debarge! Hands down has a beautiful falsetto.💕
Never heard of Sunflower.....and why am I watching this?
Lol u probably a caveman.
Two of my favorite songs, sunflower and the hills
It sounds like Prince had different pitches of falsetto. Like in his song "Kiss," he's singing in falsetto pretty much the whole song. Then at the end, he goes into a higher register. It's really amazing and difficult to pull off for untrained amateurs like myself.
Not sure about this. Personally I find a strong chest voice to sound the most emotional, especially when the voice gets raspy and distorted. Falsetto pretty much never hits me with much feeling.
Choir boys: **have balls**
The church: _it's free real estate_
thanks for explaining why i can't stop listening to the weeknd's after hour album

One of the ideas I have for my rewrite of the fighter by Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood is to have both vocal done by the same singer but have Carrie underwoods parts in Falsetto
The weeknd's after hours is a whole falsetto song.

"Somebody's Watching Me" and "Gold Digger." That's pretty much the only time falsetto worked for me.
Yes
You know ,I didn't understand the title but saw the weeknd so I clicked
I love the sound of Abel✨
this gives me confidence. My instructor told me my normal voice sucks but my falsetto is good.
Maybe you could also look into Falsetto mimicking the baby's cry or sound catching our attention in a subconscious level.. Falsetto is a loud whisper which disarms and stimulates the listener at the same time. That is why when we talk to children and babies, and even small animals, we usually use that tone.
No wonder Prince's voice is so amazing
I wonder if this only applies to human voices. Do you enjoy the higher note instruments like violas more than basses? Or does the range a single instrument play in also have different effects on our brain? My guess would be no, since they are not living creatures and our brain does not see parallels to emotional attributes. Yet still someone bending the violin on an outstanding level can cause a lot of people to tear up and get emotional. Would love to know more about this. Interesting video!
Justin Stoney! I love his videos on youtube.
Is that Justin Stoney?! Wow!
