NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION MOVIE REACTION | 0:00 - 25:38
NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION MOVIE REVIEW | 25:39 - 27:06
National Lampoon's Vacation Movie Description:
Accompanied by their children (Dana Barron, Anthony Michael Hall), Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and his wife, Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo), are driving from Illinois to a California amusement park. As Clark increasingly fixates on a beautiful woman driving a sports car, the Griswolds deal with car problems and the death of a family member. They reach Los Angeles, but, when Clark worries that the trip is being derailed again, he acts impulsively to get his family to the park.
National Lampoon's Vacation, sometimes referred to as Vacation, is a 1983 American road comedy film directed by Harold Ramis and starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Imogene Coca, Randy Quaid, John Candy, and Christie Brinkley in her acting debut. The screenplay was written by John Hughes, based on his short story "Vacation '58" which appeared in National Lampoon.
The film was a box-office hit, earning more than $60 million in the U.S. with an estimated budget of $15 million, and received positive reviews from critics.
As a result of its success, four sequels have been produced: European Vacation (1985), Christmas Vacation (1989), Vegas Vacation (1997) and Vacation (2015). In 2000, readers of Total Film voted it the 46th greatest comedy film of all time.

I Can See This Movie Inspired So Much!

Clark Griswold, reminds me so much of my father, but Clark was a lot more reserved and yelled a whole lot less. Greatest depiction of a standard suburbanite family. Lol
These movies are hilarious, and it doesn't hurt having Brinkley and Beverly in them!
@Robert Stephens Fletch is awesome
Every Vacation movie the kids are played by different actors.
9:20
I like how you became a passenger in the car 😋🚗
"What is this a runway." Very funny considering that is THE supermodel from the 80's Christie Brinkley. 👌
PLEASE... more inserting Mellow into strategic locations. That, my man... is pure, laugh out loud, gold.
Seen this movie a million times. Never with Mellow in the back seat though.
I loved that too lmao
I laughed soooo hard when I saw that ! 😂😂😂
Christmas Vacation and European Vacation were both also excellent.
Vegas Vacation is better than European Vacation
European was awful and crass
No, European Vacation sucked. The original Vacation and Vegas Vacation are way better. :)
@@The3rdGunman that was kinda intentional to be crass
@@captainkingpin6836 I never said it wasn't it just wasn't funny.
my favorite part is when Randy Quaids character asks Chevy Chase’s character (Clark) if he could use a cold one then hands him his warm half drunk beer and pops himself open a freshie 🤣😂🤣😂
"I don't know why they call this Hamburger Helper...It does just fine by itself!"
@@jean-paulaudette9246 well... he's not wrong...
@@jean-paulaudette9246 Wait, did they not put hamburger in it?? lmao
@@Detroit_Dawg it's implied that there's no burger in it
Inconsiderate, selfish and rude
I love all the opportunities you took to insert yourself in the scenery. 😆
Yes, riding along in the car, etc. I was waiting for the swimming pool shot but alas, didn't make it.
Loved it!
@@RandomPau My favorite one was on the roller coaster.
I'm sure you'll like Christmas vacation it's one of the sequels that holds up 100% to its predecessor not many movies do that and this is a great review to see how surprised you were in a lot of aspects of the movie keep going young man you're doing great I appreciate the effort
Also, the European vacation with the French waiter.
"SQUIRREL!!"
My god, it still cracks me up almost 20 years later.
Agreed! Julia Louis-Dreyfus is hysterically funny as the uppity yuppy neighbor! My absolute favorite scene was when her bf asked Clark where he planned on putting the tree. Especially when he states he wasn't talking about him but her rather!OMFGLMAO!!!
My favorite Christmas movie.
I love Christmas Vacation! I watch it every year just like I do A Christmas Story
21:45 this is actually a parody of CHARIOTS OF FIRE. That was a British movie about their old timey track stars in the Olympics. The song was everywhere back then.
Most definitely! I was a little in the early 80s and I still think of that song when I'm running lol.
Vangelis
@@thomasfinnell5418 He did some great stuff. I think he did "Dune" too.
17:18 - "A dead person breathed on me!" - The most underrated line in the movie.
18:33 - And....the greatest monologue...ever.
This movie is relatable and that adds to the humor. When I was a kid, every summer my dad tried to take us on the perfect trip....and it always went wrong!!! Lol
With us, it was camping...every single camping trip managed to end in a tornado.
@@jean-paulaudette9246 jesus! summer sucks!
This was my family. At least, that’s what it felt like every summer. Dad did his best, but life is….ya’ know, life.
The joys of road trip vacations. ROTFL! It was crazy
Beverly D'Angelo is a timeless beauty and classy woman. I'd give her the last piece of pizza every time.
Michael Anthony Hall (Russ) tried to sneak a peak of her when they filmed her shower scene, and he got busted. I think the director made him apologize to her. lol
Not gonna lie, had a major crush on her when I was young. Also crushed on the German girl from European Vacation that Russ hooked up with.
@@BHSRugby1999
And, in Vegas Vacation, Audrey 'grew up' a bit 😉
@@wfly81 lol I didn't know that. Naughty, naughty, Michael Anthony Hall. But, to be completely honest, I could definitely see myself trying to take sneak peaks too at that age if I was him. In fact, I did.
Christie Brinkley is fine too but D'Angelo wins the day, what was Clark doing fantasizing anyway
It’s one of those rare films that’s you can watch from start to finish without getting bored despite knowing you’ve seen it 70 odd times over the yesrs
Mello, you do know the blond in the red car is Christy Brinkley, right? I mean, I know I'm getting old, but surely you know Christy Brinkley. Married Billy Joel? Wait, did you say who's Billy Joel? 😳😳
Lol
Three Amigos! Steve Martin, Chevy Chase & Martin Short
Oh man, you gotta watch European Vacation afterwards.
yes! European Vacation is hilarious!
Or Road Trip & Eurotrip... (Though ya' might have to [C**S*R] quite a few naughty bits of those...)
I can't remember mutch of that movie exept when they go on a roundabout and get stuck
@@darrenjones3181 Dude! Pig in a Poke?! How do you forget that?
Sorry I don't speak klingon?
Back in the day, there was no Expedia, you planned trips through a travel agent or tried to arrange hotels through the Yellow Pages.
My dad tried to plan a trip to Williamsburg, and thought that he got a good price for a hotel at $25 a night. Well, it was a rent by the hour hotel for hookers, in the worst neighborhood of Williamsburg, and their air conditioning broke down. It was July and we were on the 7th floor. We lasted one night, until I had heat stroke and threw up everywhere. Best. Vacation. Ever.
😂 That's a fantastic story.
@@MrKeychange my parents probably didn't think that it was that funny at the time, but the passage of time has definitely made it funnier to all of us.
Oh and my mom told me today that my dad found the hotel based on a recommendation by his bookie, so yikes!
@@SuburbanSavage from his bookie? Now THAT is hilarious, LMAO!
When we went on vacation, my parents would take us to restaurants that had the most cars outside thinking it was the best food in town. Once, in Nevada, we were eating dinner when my mom caught on to why this restaurant had a number of cars. She told me, about 30 years later, that women were taking men upstairs for extra-curriculars. She hurried my dad and us out. He hadn't figured it out.
@@mtn_linda364 same with my dad! My mom figured it out, but he seemed to think that this place was populated by women who wore a lot of makeup, so they must have been beauty school students.
... Hamburger Helper does just fine by itself. Gets me every time.
You have plenty of meat at home, be polite have some ketchup 💀💀
While Eddie is eating a steak 😆
Real tomato ketchup Eddie?
@Shannon Allen
"Nothing but the best!"
The actress that played Cousin Eddie’s daughter with the pot was a young Jane Krakowski from 30 Rock.
She's also in Ally McBeal.
Also in the unbreakable kimmy schmidt
…Possibly her funniest role.
@@bradkirchhoff3751 yes she was great in that too.
The bit with you in the car was just so random and hilarious... great comedy stuff!
Great reaction and a comedy classic. BTW, the woman in the red Ferrari is Christie Brinkley, a very well known model from the 70s and 80s, and still unrealistically attractive today.
Married to billy Joal at the time
My mom loved Chevy Chase! Her favorite was Christmas Vacation.
Anyone who's ever been on a family vacation in a car can relate to this movie.
In 1968 my parents drove us from Toronto to Disneyland in California, complete with a detour through Detroit to look at the damage from the riots. This movie isn't a satire - It's a travelogue!
We went on a week long vacation to the beach once, and everything that could go wrong did. Van broke down halfway there and was shooting fire out the exhaust, I angrily slammed the door open and sprung it, I almost drowned, all sorts of things.
I love how limp eugene levy's handshake was
The scenes with Christie Brinkley originally had the song "I'm So Excited" by the Pointer Sisters. Unfortunately they didn't secure the rights to the song for home video so it was replaced with "Little Boy Sweet" by June Pointer.
Is that a streaming thing? I remember that song in the VHS I had, although rights are different in every country and my version was Finnish.
They did have a reference in Family Guy in their first Star Wars spoof, complete with Chevy Chase reprising the ghetto scene where the Rebels are fighting at the Death Star, as the now space Truckster is flying through, and the "Roll 'em up." line.
And, in the re-boot version, with Ed Helms, the Christie Brinkley scene has a hilarious ending, as well. 😉
@@yankeerepairs Ed Helms in a reboot of this might be the worst idea anyone's ever had. lol
@@MrKeychange
Have you seen the movie ?
It wasn't made by National Lampoon,, it is just titled "Vacation" - it's a good laugh !
"Kids, are you witnessing the plight of the Rebellion?"
@@yankeerepairs I tried, but couldn't get through it.
Every time I see her stirring the Kool aid with her arm, I lose it. 😆
One of the best movie franchises!!! You HAVE to see the others too... you'll love them!!! It's funny because it's the same actors for the parents through all of them but different actors for the kids🤣
1) European Vacation
2) Christmas Vacation
3) Vegas Vacation
Even, the re-boot from a few years ago, "Vacation" (although a National Lampoon make) with Ed Helms & Christina Applegate is funny - Worth the watch, indeed !
Might as well do "We're The Millers" at that point & time...
Also, "Fletch" is a very under rated movie & sequel was all right as well.....
And, "CaddyShack" is a classic.
sadly Euro is when they start to show that the charm and wit is fading away, and Vegas was basically their deathknell.
I would rank Christmas above European.
@@UltimateGamerCC I liked Vegas Vacation. The scene at the cheap casino was hilarious. I loved the Pick a Number and Clark would call out numbers and the dealer would say no. That shit cracked me up man.
That bit about different child actors was kind of the humor, especially with Christmas Vacation because they flipped the ages if Rusty and his sister.
The sequels are also worth watching. They're hilarious. Especially the 3rd movie.
Christmas is the only sequel to watch
European wasn’t bad, but Vegas sucked ass.
the girl with the Ferrari was a model; Christie Brinkley. this was the first acting gig she did.
One of my top 3 comedies .. Great film , Xmas Vacation is awesome as well ..
Beverly D’Angelo is a natural beauty ..
“We’re not really violent people...this is our first gun”
😂
Still my favorite line in the whole movie
I'm ashamed of my lack of attention to details. I have been watching this since it first came out in the 80's. It was only until a bit more recently, like say, the last 10 years or so, did I realise that Audrey actually ends up in the front seat with the folks. I laughed as hard as you did like Rusty with the dog. I still do to this day. Thank you for sharing this with us, we appreciate the time and effort.
If you liked this movie then you'll love Christmas Vacation. I watch it every year around Christmas time. Love your videos brother.
Great review! You GOTTA see Nationa Lampoons European Vacation & Christmas Vacation
As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I was like "He's going to lose his shit at the 'Roll 'em up.' line, I know it."
I went to a dealership with a buddy when he I took a new car for a test drive. While he was out, they "lost" his old car on the lot.
I was 11 when this movie came out. 12:22 - Christie Brinkley (the girl in the Ferrari, who was a very famous model, Mell) quickly became my 3rd celebrity crush (1 was Lynda Carter and 2 was Erin Grey (Buck Rogers)
Mate I just wanna say that I really appreciate you enjoying the scenes that make racial jokes, because its a joke! and it was made in the 70s! too many people get hung up those sort of things and can't enjoy it
In '83 actually, but your point still stands.
Great reaction! Fletch is also a great movie starring Chevy Chase.
Agreed. Fletch, and the sequel, are both great movies.
Yes yes yes!!!!
Yes! It's all ball-bearings nowadays
The 1988 movie 'Funny Farm' was good too
@@Protoman85 well, that and three in one oil and some gauze pads😁
9:16 Just want you to know I see your effort there Mel, that's some quality masking :)
That was really hilarious. 🤣
It was inventive, it worked, and I want more.
@Necramonium I once masked someone just so I could have a Batmobile drive behind them for about 1.5 seconds, took me ages to get it right. Mel's out here masking around Rusty reaching for a tissue and stuff :-) making it all look so easy
"Clark, you're doing 80 miles an hour!"
"Doesn't seem like it does it honey"
"SLOW DOWN!!!"
Yep.. in 1980’s the high way speed limits was 55 😜
When I was a kid and whenever this came on TV, my Dad would watch it. No matter what part it was on, he'd finish it through.
Him and I still quote it to this day. Stands the test of time.
One of my favs as a child. Even though there was hella adult humor, it still got much replay (we had it on Beta Max before VHS was a thing). I liked European Vacation too but not as much as this one.
i saw it at 10 and saw vegas vacation first so was surprised by the racy material in this.
Nice!!! I had the original Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and the Blue Brothers on Beta Max back in the day.
You inserting yourself in the scenes will never not be funny! I just went to a funeral yesterday, I needed that. 🤣
Well, the scene with the song and the slow-motion running was Vacation parodying Chariots of Fire.
1:58 Yeah. She is gorgeous. I'm glad you noticed. Her beauty often goes overlooked.
Yup this is certainly a classic.
It's live action The Simpsons in a way.
"Movie sponsored by Lacrosse" - I think you mean Lacoste LOL!
The voice at the end asking Mr Wally if he wants him to take the Griswolds downtown to book em is Harold Ramis, the director.
I know others have already said it, but its worth repeating: nice touch on editing yourself into some of the scenes. That was pretty clever and I haven't seen any other reaction channel do that. Props.
17:51 My man, I think the entire early 80's wardrobe was sponsored by Lacoste. From some pics when I was 2 I had a little gator on my little polos. I do remember having more than one in many colors, too.
I also loved how you edited yourself into the movie scenes. Hilarious!!! I loved that!!! Keep that up!!!
Oh man, I grew up with this one. Every time I watch it it puts me in a pure state of nostalgia and memories of me and my crazy family when we’d go vacationing.
"You think you hate it now...
but wait till you drive it!" 😄
European Vacation is pretty funny too, vegas vacation is alright, but my favorite has gotta be Christmas Vacation! Thats a must watch for me every year, easily one of the BEST christmas movies ever!!!
Vegas vacation is not just alright lol. It blows European Vacation out of the water and Id argue it rivals this one in terms of how funny it is. European Vacation was a flop.
They made Audrey way too annoying…
Only joke I legit enjoy in European Vacation is
“Hey kids, there’s Big Ben again.”
Clark going on some rant in those movies are great
I live in st. Louis and the st. Louis scenes are still accurate.
In the Lou here too.
They crossed the poplar street Bridge and went north. Always a bad call.
I understand your plight.
(BLAM!)
Roll 'em up!
Please watch European Vacation and Christmas Vacation.
Seen this 5-6 times. It never gets old!
Aunt Edna was played by the late great Imogene Coca. I found out about her when she played the Tooth Fairy on "Bewitched" but she was a regular cast member of Sid Caesar's live sketch comedy series "Your Show of Shows" from 1950-1954. They were TV show pioneers. It ran for 151 episodes.
A true classic.
Dude! So glad you found this classic. I enjoy your channel great reactions. Might I suggest all John Hughes movies and all Herald Ramis movies. First you have to react to Coneheads, My Science Project, Weird Science and Heavy Metal.
Weird Science!!!! Chips, Dips, Chains, Whips
What a fun movie. I watch this so much as a teenager that I had it memorized line for line. I especially love that rant Clark has when his family wants to go home.
Rusty: 'Do you think mom will buy it'?
Clark: 'Nice talk son.'
This and Animal House are the two best National Lampoon movies, Christmas Vacation is pretty damn funny as well.😂
Fun fact! They were meant to be going to Disneyland and Disney accepted the offer, however once they found the park was closed when the Griswolds arrived, they pulled out as they didn’t want to damage the Disney’s parks reputation
So they ruined Star Wars instead to make up for it.
In the Christmas Vacation reaction, we better see Mello sledding down the hill with Clark!!! lmao XD
This movie never fails to get a laugh from me, great review btw
I always watch the national lampoon marathon every Christmas! Love this! It’s so nice seeing you have so much fun watching this 😂😂
I came across the “Cousin Eddie shoes” at Burlington Coat Factory several years back. Only $20. I bought them just because.
Your chair looking like a damn child seat putting yourself in the car makes it 10 times funnier ! 😂
10:58 Watching this as someone who takes his glasses off to see his phone.
24:37 You're right :) he was in Home Alone 2. He was Mr. Duncan of Duncan's Toy Chest, who gave Kevin the 2 turtledoves.
Nearly spat my food out at the Dumb and Dumber instert!!
Yo……I love this film man and I love you Mello! I wait with baited breath each week for you uploads!
Man, I hope you keep up with all the sequels (and eventually the reboot)! Knowing the basic family members now, you'll see how their relationships build as each movie goes on! Also, love that you put yourself in the car and on some rides; had me cracking up!
Mello in the car looked like a baby in a carseat, he's too funny
7:28 I love how the guy yanked the dog out of the way with the leash. 😂
Yes, Home Alone 2 - he was the owner of the toy store.
He did movies with bob hope back in the day...love this movie
I remember watching this movie on VHS in the basement of my best friend's house, which we had to sneak to see because it was rated R and we were too young. So amazing how much of that adult humor went clear over my head at the time. I vividly remember being confused about what was in that shoebox Vicky showed to Audrey. To my eyes, it looked like that fake green grass that you see stuffed in Easter egg baskets, and I remember being confused about why Audrey looked so amazed by that. And also not understanding what Cousin Dale meant by "bop your bologna." I thought he meant actual meat...
Boy, was I young...
This was the first R rated movie I ever saw and one my mom would allow which was strange but I grew to like this movie more and more out of the series this one the christmas one and the last one are my favourites
This is truly a classic comedy. You have Chevy Chase and the very missed John Candy. I'm a little older and remember watching this as a kid. Such nostalgia! Plus Beverly D'Angelo was the best person for this role. It amazes me at how young everyone was in this movie! :)
I miss Chevy like this, too.
At least shes with her dog. LOL!!!!
You want to see more??? Watch European
Vacation and Christmas Vacation.....classics!!!!
Classic comedy, classic franchise. Love your reaction, Mellow -- those insert shots are fire!
You sitting between Ellen and Clark killed me 😂😂
The woman in the red sports car is the super model Christie Brinkley... I had to laugh when you said "Why is she doing all these poses?"... Um because she is a model. 😁
now you just gotta watch Christmas Vacation, just as good. also. Roll em up!
"Men gotta be stubborn [about knowing the way]"
One time when we were on vacation, my father and I went to find a firehouse hosting a pancake fundraiser. We were out searching this small town for 45 minutes trying to find the damn place (this was at least 22 years ago, so no GPS) and Dad turned down all my suggestions to ask for directions. Then we stopped at a red light, I got out to ask someone on the sidewalk for directions, and before the light changed my dad took off, leaving me there because I asked for directions. I had to walk ten miles to get back to our condo (and I managed to find my way back by ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS) all while trudging through 4-6 inches of snow. My mother was PISSED when she found out.
So yeah, men, especially old school men, gotta be stubborn.
That slo-mo running is a parody of the 1981 Oscar winner called Chariots of Fire, the song's called Chariots of Fire too, it was also parodied at the 2012 Oscars by Mr. Bean and the scenes of Rocky & Apollo running on the beach in Rocky 3 was homage to the movie as well.
Definitely watch the rest of them
10:17 - The blonde girl is Jane Krakowski from such shows as '30 Rock' and 'The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" and a Tony-winning Broadway musical actress.
12:26 - The girl ready for the runway...you ain't far from the truth. That is Christie Brinkley, THE BIGGEST SUPERMODEL in the World at the time this film was made. Covergirl for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition 3 consecutive times and model in the issue 8 times, former Mrs. Billy Joel, and just a stunningly beautiful woman. I had a SERIOUS crush on her when this came out. Most guys did...she was also the "Uptown Girl" in the Billy Joel music video as the song was written partly about her.
21:52 - Actually, this was the FIRST parody. The music by Vangelis is the "Theme from Chariots of Fire". 'Chariots of Fire' was the Best Picture Oscar-winner in 1981 and was about the British running team for the 1924 Olympics. The opening credits of the movie are slow motion of about 20 or 30 young men running barefoot along a beach, spotlighting four specific characters the film focuses on.
PLEASE do "Animal House" sometime soon. It's the same group that made this and it's such a great comedy.
He needs to do Fast Times at Ridgemont High as well
These movies are classics, we watch Christmas vacation on Christmas eve every year as a family tradition
Great review, loved how you went along for the ride with the family!
1. FACT: They don't crush cars right away. They will resell them and then sell the parts.
2. My favorite part is when the ALL fall asleep in the car while it's still rolling. LOL
3. There's no way he would have gotten a parking place right in front of the "Long Branch" saloon.
4. The guy at the campground is Brian Doyle=Murry (Bill Murry's Brother) and he played Clark's boss in "Christmas Vacation".
5. He's crazy. I'd take Beverly DeAngelo over Christy Brinkley any day.
6. That's Six Flags near Valencia.
7. That guy was the toy store owner in Home Alone II.
Do the rest of the Vacation movies. Especially Christmas Vacation.
Great reaction as always, love the floating quotes man
I am so happy you did this😛👍
glad this won the poll, it and the sequel are both great in their own ways, i look forward to watching your reaction to both, here i go!
Great review, keep up the great work. My favorite is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation from 1989
LOL -- MelVerse laughin' on one of the rides at the end -- I'm dyin' waaahhahahahahaha
Mrs Grisewald is Baaaaaad, Clark was tripping!
The greatest comedy ever is Animal House
"ROLL 'EM UP" kills me everytime. And this film has a bunch of like subtle or background stuff, like Ellen ducking Cousin Eddie's kiss. lol
