Canada is Quietly Building The Trading Empire Of The World

- We live in a world where globalization and trade have become one of the most vital aspects in determining the power of a country’s economy.
In fact, the process of getting goods from point A to point B might be one of the most important economic drivers in the world, yet no one talks about it. And somehow…quietly in the background, We might be seeing the creation of the most powerful trading economy in the world…but not for the reasons that you might think.
If you want to ship an item from a manufacturing hub like China, to a consumer hub in a Place like New York…how would you do it?
Well you could just send the package on a direct flight and it’ll get their in roughly 15 hours. But this is extremely costly. It actually costs anywhere from 5 to 15 times more to ship by air than to ship by the most common shipping method… by sea.
So, we are probably going to need to use a sea freighter. Now how would you deliver the package? Well you could drop the package off at long beach, and use a rail or truck to move the item to new york, but again, that is usually more costly.
Now we are in a predicament. In order to get an Item from China, all the way to new york, a ship would need cross the pacific ocean, travel all the way around the bottom of south america, make its way through the atlantic ocean, before reaching its destination after travelling 30,000 kilometres.
And this is a problem that was faced for hundreds of years. For example, when countries like Great Britain wanted to trade with the west coast of the united states or south america. Virtually all ships would’ve needed to travel around the bottom of south america in order to deliver their goods.
That was until the early 1900’s when the United States decided to buy up an 82 kilometre long plot of land in Panama. You see, the united states saw that this was the smallest amount of land that separated the Atlantic Ocean from the Pacific Ocean. So they thought this land could be used for both trade and military purposes. So, they purchased this plot for roughly $40 million dollars, or roughly $916 million dollars today.
They then created an artificial lake, and dug trenches from this new artificial lake(gatun lake) to both the pacific and atlantic oceans.
And finally on August 15th, 1914, the Panama Canal was opened. And the first american ship to ever travel directly from the atlantic ocean to the pacific ocean, without going around south america, had passed through the Canal. It was a cargo ship called SS Ancon, and was largely responsible for shipping cement from New York, to Panama in order to help build the Canal’s infrastructure.
And this opening of the Panama Canal would go on to change the world in many ways. For example, in 2019 nearly 1 million ships passed through this Canal, which indirectly resulted in trillions of dollars worth of commerce. The Canal also generated roughly 2.6 Billion dollars worth of fees for granting access of use of the Canal, so the Canal itself is a pretty decent money maker itself as well.
But this Canal also has limits, for example, no ships longer than 1200ft or wider than 168ft can actually pass through the Canal, as the waterway is simply not large enough to allow bigger ships through. So that is why today, you see most cargo ships being built with the exact dimensions needed to fit in the Panama Canal.
Another more unforeseen effect that this Canal had was that it wreaked havoc on some south American countries like Chile. This was because the ships that once had to stop at multiple port cities along the Chilean coast, all of a sudden stopped coming by. This was a large contributing factor to an economic collapse in Chile, which saw its state income and international trade cut in half within 2 years.

The history of the panama canal is much more complex than this. Saying that it’s simply another act of blatant U.S. intervention is false and ahistorical. In the late 1800s, when Panama was still part of what we now call Columbia, the people of Panama wanted to build the canal as a means to gain more economic freedom and sovereignty. The central Columbian government, however, prevented the Canal from being built. So Panama reached out to the U.S. for support in their fight for independence from Columbia. It’s important to note that at this point in time the panama canal project had already begun (undertaken by the French canal company) but had halted in the 1880s and 90s due to worker death tolls and environmental reasons. After Panama gained independence, the canal project was shifted to the U.S., which was much better equipped than the french to build the canal in a less dangerous and more effective manner.

The Northwest passage goes from one part of Canada to another part of Canada. It’s not a Straight and definitely not international waters.

Actually it connects the 'High seas' of the Atlantic and Pacific, so you can't say it's definitely not a strait.

@@tusuong7654 I don't think canada has a problem as of yet regarding too many chinese communists lol. Canada used to have a bit of a housing issue where china and the USA would buy up the housing sure, but they have since implemented laws to deter such behaviour and make it less appealing for foreigners to buy up land like that. Either way when chinese people come over to canada they become Canadian and I wouldn't consider Canada an extension of china much like I wouldn't consider countries like england with large amounts of indian immigrants and the states an extension of india. Thats a very red pill take. The danger seems largely exaggerated though it is still something to keep in mind if it threatens ones sovereignty. Our country is largely democratic though, hardly communists and mostly liberal more so then the USA. I would say the states has more communist roots rather then Canada with whats going on and how they are dealing with the mass disrest/censorship thats going on right now. Police wouldn't even tell them why they were getting arrested just that they were following orders. The USA has so much inner conflict in their nation right now that people are saying their might be a civil war. The US also got problems with russia/spys if they are able to even influence their elections. Keep in mind it was such bills like the digital bill of rights (threatening internet freedom) that were introduced in the United States not Canada, further indicating that the US is more so skewed toward communist behaviour then Canada. A bill stated by canada they would not adopt btw. Just saying I don't think Canada has reached that point yet and the usa has more of a communist problem. Spy's I can agree, but every countries got spys and some more then others like the states where they can hack/tamper with even their electorial process. "Canada could pick and choose which countries to impose tariffs on"
He's speaking like this is shocking, meanwhile, he forgets what he said earlier in the video, how the US charges ships that cross the Panama canal. Also, he forgets that Canada imposed tariffs on the US in retaliation to the US' tariffs on Canada. Although informative, this video is very biased.
@Christobanistan If the NW passage becomes a popular shipping lane, Canada is the only country close enough to offer assistance to passing ships, meaning they need money to fund sed patrols. One of the main reasons Canada claims the NW passage is their territory is because they will be obligated to maintain the passage because of their close proximity to it, which costs money. Where's that money coming from? Charging ships for passing through the NW passage, the same way the US did with the Panama canal before they gave it to Panama. (A side note, the US may not own the canal anymore, but they also can't be charged for passing through it, so the US just saved money by giving it to Panama as they no longer have to maintain it. It wasn't generosity, it was in the best interest of the US)
Yeah. We are very friendly but we'll fight back. I'm disappointed in this video for mentioning that without saying it was a retaliation. Thumbs down for the video
@@BasedBebs They gave Panama control of it, Panama collects the tolls from it from all other ships. The US built it, paid for the land to build it, and maintained and upgraded it for almost a century. Then gave it to Panama, the only benefit in return was to pass through at no cost. The US could have sold it to Panama for a $Billion instead. So not only the US benefits ongoing, but Panama got the most benefit?
The U.S. was right to impose tariffs. Trudeau was allowing the Chinese to dump cheap shitty steel into Canada, undercutting both the Canadian and U.S. steel manufactures. JT just tried to look big by imposing reciprocal tariffs without addressing the real problem of his love of China. JT and the Liberal party have been a complete disaster for Canada.
@@gwennwright4800 The U.S. literally backed and funded a rebellion that overthrew the previous government just so they could maintain control over the canal. If Canada becomes polluted like USA, all American drinking waters will become polluted. Even though there are companies in US already doing that job already since the lead leak of Flint Michigan.
Canada is too dependent on the United States. Canada's exports is roughly 76% to the U.S.
Trump and Trudeau don't like each other that much, but that will change once the U.S has a different leader (Joe Biden possibly) and the countries will get along more. But trade between the U.S and Canada is still strong, it will probably get better which is a good thing
Exactly. what a biased documentary. Canada did not just 'arbitrarily put sanctions on the US.. it was also a softwood lumber issue. We are and have been 'good friends' to the US. That equals one ship every 30 seconds, lol. And we think we have bad traffic jams on land.
The Northwest Passage is Canada. We've always known this and no doubt the US would like to have it. Unfortunately it has always been Canadian and it will always be Canadian land or water
The us wants it open and international. That would be terrible for the future Canadian economy. They kept Panama for like tens of years. They now are the ones asking for the passage to be international just so that can save a quick dollar here and there.
Please tell me where the Canadian northern border is. ???
@@joewong6662 canada borders Alaska. What do you mean by northern border. Canada has no northern land border.

I don't get it. It's clearly Canadian territory, as it's all islands with short distances between them. If we do decide to use the north for trade, we should be able to what what we want with it. What happens if an American tanker decides to leak and spill all over up there? We will be left to clean up the mess. We will have to pay to have coast guard to set up shop.
If it were to become "international waters" canadians are gonna have to foot the bill.
Also it legally can't be considered international water, as it is only within Canadian borders. Some rivers in Europe are considered international, because they are the only waterways some countries have that lead to oceans. Up north, it goes from Canada to more Canada.

International waters means everyone owns it, not Canada. International waters are anywhere more than 12 miles out. If the router does not pass really close to land, then Canada has no jurisdiction.
This same thing is happening in the Persian Gulf. Iran claims they own those waters, but in reality they are international waters and the US is in the right to keep shipping open. At the narrowest the gap is 22 miles wide so to avoid Iranian waters ships have to pass on the right side ( meaning the side closest to Oman in the Strait of Hormuz).
Once again Canada has zero rights more than 12 miles from their shoreline. I have never studied the passage but that is how it works. And Canada may very well have no rights. Or if it is a narrow passage, they do.
@@wadopotato33There are literally hundreds of examples around the world that that contradict your statements. Is the middle of the Gulf of California international waters? @@00dfm00 Yes, I already noted there are exceptions. I understand that. However Canada sees it as internal waters, but other countries don't. I also said that that is the law (12 MILES), but that I haden't looked at a map. If there is a bottleneck then it doesn't even apply. Ships therefore have to pass into Canadian waters. By law then Canada controls what happens there. But they never will because of the state of their Navy. You can't police it and the rest of the world does not see it as Canada's alone. FYI, those exceptions work both ways. There are many routes that look on a map to be internal waters, but are in fact used without permission by ships. Perhaps because their use benefits the country in question, or perhaps because it has been used by everyone by tradition.

Canadian waters. When frozen solid nobody wanted it. Now as a potential appears everyone wants a piece of the action.
Sidenote...I am a Canadian who lives permanently in Panama and have for the last 12 years. Love Panama and love Canada, that's why I am a PANADIAN
Canada has a pathetic navy compared to Russia, the United States, and China. All of our submarines are out of service because they're from the Cold War and need constant upkeep. We don't own any aircraft carriers so we wouldn't have air superiority. We don't have any destroyer-class ships. We have only a dozen frigates.
If Russia, the U.S., or China wanted to claim it as international waters and sail on through there, who's going to stop them? The Inuit?

He really needs to add more context to the facts he is bringing here. Like that the Panama canal's construction was started by the French and that the US basically provoked a coup in Panama to gain total control of the canal. Or that the 2016 Canadian tariffs on unitedstater aluminum came as an answer to the outrageous tariffs imposed by Trump.
Also for religious ( do not confuse with spiritual ) reasons spain didn't do anithing about it bit frenxh tried I so not remember what else is writen in the touristic and historic plaza de francia in the old town ( casco viejo ) maybe when this covid-19 thing ends Ill take a bus and read it again ( the writen in walls on Panama historic and turistic old twon)
or that Canada's and the world's extremist environmental movement will probably never allow development of Canada's relatively untouched northern territories in this way
The first 6 minutes are completely unrelated to the title of this video. If anything, he needs to edit and cut out the whole 6 minutes, which includes the part about Panama. NOT ADD TO IT! Nothing to do with the title, at all.
@@jsa326 now I agree there are some who are extreme when it comes to climate change I also think its important to become carbon negative if not neutral in the future. We need to be using nuclear energy from molten salt reactors, as they are more efficient which means they save money and their waste turns to lead in only 100 years. Rather than having carbon released into the air. But I also believe that oil is still going to be a useful resource. We are still gonna need carbon in the future no matter what people think. Oil just happens to be the most abundant resource in terms of carbon. So why not try to figure out how to turn oil into graphene or carbon nano tubes. We could then use that to reinforce all our buildings and have a ton of possibilities opened do to our advancement in material science. The resources aren't the problems, its how we extract them and how we use them.

This video claims that One Million ships pass through the canal each year, where in fact it's only 14,000. That's a massive miss calculation.
Jay, 2 wrongs doesn't make it right! Don't u think giving a data from 2014 of 14,000 ships crossing Panama cannal is misleading too?
If want to go after someone, please get your Facts right.
I thought that number seemed high... that would be more than 2700 ships per day! I don't know how big the infrastructure is around that canal but that seems unlikely.
Yet another misleading fact in the video.
How is Canada’s waterway any different from the Panama Canal? If it ever becomes an international waterway, so should every other passage in the world. Can’t pick and choose
Panama is an artificial waterway across land--hardly the same as a natural oceanic passage.
As a Canadian, I hope we make a fortune off this to pay off all the money the government is spending right now.

15:06 if that’s true that would mean over 2,300 ships pass trough there every day. Yet another reason UA-cam is not a place for accurate info.
They are probably padding the starts by letting in pleasure crafts and smaller boats that they can let in like 12 at a time and running it 24-7
so around 100 ships an hour Ahahahah
We (Canada), like anyone else, have an "exclusive economic zone" in the water 230 miles in any direction of our coastline.
We own all those little islands... The NW Passage belongs to Canada.
