Steve gadd and Todd Sugarman are my two most favorite drummers to watch. I love both of their styles they're both insane! and fun! to watch I try to rip them off as much as I can!.. LOL incredible!!
Todd is so underrated!! He is easily in the top ten best drummers ever. You need to buy his DVD or see him playing outside of Styx to rly see it. He can do it all amazingly. From jazz, Latin to metal. I never seen anyone polished in all genres the way he is. Wish I could afford his beautiful signature snare to add to my collection but at the price tag it won't happen.
@@Dave-lr2wo yes! Thank you for making that point. The term "underrated" is also absurd, since Todd is one of the most well-known and versatile drummers on the planet.
Of the hundreds of drum solos ive listened to, I think I just witnessed the best of all I’ve ever seen or heard...and the man gets a clap clap clap...I’m in utter shock. Todd is the very best bar none!
He is super amazing! I don't care who's faster or technically more competent (and at this level what does it matter?) because everything he plays is so musical and interesting. He's had a major influence over my playing, still trying to emulate that effortless yet powerful style of playing. Really, he just keeps things fresh.
You had the legit badasses, like Gadd, Weckl, and Colaiuta. Then the supercomputer drummers like Donati, Lang and such (which are awesome in their own right). There was a void of new musical super drummers in the tradition of musicality over chops, and here we have Todd to carry the tradition on.
So refreshing to hear something other than a straight 4/4 common time piece. Just last night I was working on an odd time piece. I had a total blast, and was my first time.
This video was just added to my UA-cam suggestions. Todd Sucherman is such a tasteful musician. Of course, he has amazing technique and chops, but he will always use them for the sake of the arrangement. A special moment for me was to hear him play Jerry Goodman's Tears of Joy, starting at 2:17. It's kind of a hidden musical gem :). Anyway, fantastic video!
Although I am WAY LATE to the party, Todd embodies everything that I admire and aspire to be as a drummer....He is an incredible ensemble player (I saw him play in Jan. 2020 with Styx in LA, right before the NAMM show), but his SOLOING is beautiful....he actually solos compositionally, not technically, although his off-the-charts technique and ability is obvious... I got to hang with him for a few minutes after the Styx show and he was a fun, down-to-earth, FUNNY hang...his video outtakes are a testament to that...What a phenomenal musician, all-around...also, check out his SOLO CD, "Last Flight Home"....fantastic.
STUNNING!!!! Todd is such a down to earth cat & yes, I'm going to say it. TODD SUCHERMAN IS A MASTER DRUMMER! PERIOD! You can really hear the Steve Smith influence in his overall makeup as a player. It must be said, that Steve Smith is really THE modern day Master Drummer. BUT, here's the difference between Smith & Sucherman. Smith has lost his 'Rock Chops.' This is no slight or a jab at Steve Smith at all. Steve's primary focus over the past 15 plus years has been Jazz / Fusion. Smith is not the rock drummer he was during his Journey days. In fact, Smith has grown into a Monster master of all chops. Todd, has continued to become a 'Cameleon.' Name the feel or groove.........Todd Sucherman has it all in his musical drummers toolbox. Todd can musically morph into any genre of music / drumming. He does so organically. Todd displays a musical vocabulary that is right up there with all the big names associated with world class drummers. Ya want a little Buddy Rich? Todd pulls it off. Want some Bonzo. Todd executes it to the "Tee". Want some vintage or modern Steve Smith? Yup! Todd serves it up for all to devour. R&B, Rock, Hard Rock, Prog, Classic Rock, Funk, Blues, Jazz, Fusion, Latin, and on and on. Todd Sucherman has it all. Thanks Todd Sucherman!!!! You are so well appreciated!
Yeah he def is. I've never seen anyone who can over all the genres as convincingly as Todd.whether it's Latin, jazz, or metal Todd gist it covered and covered as in hit record within a take or two. Amazing.
Symmetry50 : That's news of EPIC PROPORTIONS! 2 thoughts on this. What's going to happen to Dean while Steve takes his rightful throne? And I really hope that Journey doesn't have both Dean & Steve playing drums onstage together. Don't get me wrong, Dean has been fantastic during his run with Journey, but the 2 drummer thing never works in my opinion. Plus......IT'S STEVE F'N SMITH!!!! I gotta go see them if they come to my area for sure.
Todd, You never cease to amaze me. Why do you hold your left hand grip, towards the end of the stick, instead of the balance of the stick. Hope to hear back, and you sound great with chops galore!! God bless, Danny
Wow, only one comment?! I have Todd's first instructional video and it is a JOY to watch and listen to let alone learn from...He's such a musical drummer! Thanks Todd for giving back!:) Continued success on stage and off!:)
michael mattice I haven't purchased either one yet...but I'm sure going to ! Man, he can play! Seen him live several times, and he continues to blow me away!
Kenny Hensley Kenny, That's awesome that you've seen Todd...I mean Mr. Sucherman:) live!...I don't have his second video, but if it's half as good as the first it's worth the investment...even if for the beautiful music that Todd plays along too!!!:)...Happy listening and drumming Kenny!!!:)
+michael mattice I remember as a young kid, watching Styx live on DVD with my dad, the highlight was always watching Todd play, so musical, great groove, and so fun and entertaining to watch. Over a decade later, I still count him as drumming idol of mine. :)
Not at the moment, but I'm planning to. I fell out of love with drumming for about five years, but recently, I've dusted off the kit (a cherry red Mapex kit), and am regaining my skills. Soon as I become confident enough, I'll post some videos on my channel :)
I just don't get why this guy doesn't get the respect he deserves. Also, of all the people who use the traditional grip, I think he has one of the most balanced forms of sitting on his throne (well, Donati and Weckl too, especially in Weckl's latter years).
Incredible!! what time signature is that?? I'm trying to count that out wow! that's incredible! Could be 6/4?..6/8?.. I'm trying to figure it out.. whatever it's in..it's excellent!!
The name of the track is Tears of Joy by Jerry Goodman. This version is different from the studio one, which you can find on his album Ariel from 1986. It's a great album, with beautiful tunes over odd time signatures. Original drummer is Jim Hines. It's great to see Todd showing some love for Jerry's Goodman's music!
I think a cool fact is he raised his China so he could see his to be wife on stage when they performed together. Its now lower and less "80's" rock height. Even one cymbal has a story.
FanaticalDrummer wow FD u look like Julia Roberts in beautiful woman and I would lower all my cymbals to see u if I had the chance....and thats saying alot
1st tune sounds like a Shadowfax tune...refreshing song over the typical musical complex wankering at a music school...that snare sound killer...dry cut POP...Todd has lost a few sticks on these clinics and bounces right back...guess what, you're gonna lose a stick, deal with it! who cares! love his attitude...OH...he has got A LOT better since this gig!
90% of what drummers do in these clinics are never used in bands...or on records...so the question is do you need to practice complex in order to play solid time and groove? how many prog rock bands make a living with their own music? for every RUSH there are 20k drummers playing in their basement...even more! Todd got the Styx gig and it pays the bills...truth is if an MI grad got a cruise ship gig he would be fortunate! now if you still wont sleep at night until you play music...enroll at MI or someplace else!
Holy fuck. Every time I listen to this guy, I feel like I've just found my new favorite drummer. Every. Single. Time.
How in the heck can anyone give this a thumbs down? They can’t possibly be drummers. Fabulous ❤️
I can watch this man playing the drums all day!!
Do it 😎
greenscarab2 I agree completely and u are gorgeous
Steve gadd and Todd Sugarman are my two most favorite drummers to watch. I love both of their styles they're both insane! and fun! to watch I try to rip them off as much as I can!.. LOL incredible!!
Todd is THE man....love this drummer
Todd has the most amazing vocabulary and a supreme skill, set, truly a master in his profession. this is an amazing solo!
Todd is an amazing drummer and person!
Can't wait to see him again!
Incredible...recording yourself is mandatory!

From jazz, Latin to metal. I never seen anyone polished in all genres the way he is. Wish I could afford his beautiful signature snare to add to my collection but at the price tag it won't happen.
In my opinion, his drumming in Styx also very well showcases his talent
What's a "top list" of drummers? How on earth is that made?
Hint: it's a completely absurd concept.
@@Dave-lr2wo yes! Thank you for making that point. The term "underrated" is also absurd, since Todd is one of the most well-known and versatile drummers on the planet.
I never musician like this ever ! Wow ! I'm stunt ! I got goose bumps
Todd you are seriously one of the top drummers today. A master!
Just got my first pair of Todd's sticks in the mail about a half hour ago and already love them. Now I am enjoying watching him play.
Absolutely amazing drummer!
I've seen and heard A LOT of drum solos but that one was...EMOTIONAL!!!
Just discovered Todd Sucherman, great drummer, some very interesting stuff !!!
Of the hundreds of drum solos ive listened to, I think I just witnessed the best of all I’ve ever seen or heard...and the man gets a clap clap clap...I’m in utter shock. Todd is the very best bar none!

Fantastic musician...easily one of the most musical and dynamic drummers I know of...I'm envious :)

Todd Sucherman is amazing!!! My favorite part: 45:30
He tap dancing on the drums!!
Saw him when he played on Styx tour. He was fantastic.
Todd, You never cease to amaze me. Why do you hold your left hand grip, towards the end of the stick, instead of the balance of the stick. Hope to hear back, and you sound great with chops galore!! God bless, Danny
I've heard him say that's because he wants to get a really good powerful rim shot

Luke Rogers Luke, Todd is awesome! It's so easy to root for a guy like him! Do you have any of your own music online?:)

He talks and kinda looks like and totally reminds me of Charlie day. Lol
Amazing musician, terrible sounding crashes.
Yeah, Paiste is way better
