Todd is truly a drummer that amazing technically but he is musical with his playing as well. Also he switches from one "feel" to the next so seamlessly and makes it looks so damn easy. Love this dudes playing.
He is so amazing. I saw him in a clinic last year, his solo's are second to none. Blew the whole room away. He's a really cool guy too, got to take a picure with him and he signed my methods & mechanics 2 dvd.
"Please this lick is not a toy, so use it well". That's not only a hilarious statement, but it defines what this "Lesson" is all about. He's just showing players that know how to play it, how to play it in more then one way and not get carried away with playing it in one way and ruining it for everyone!
When he does the projectile vomiting sound, does anyone else think he looks like Steve Corel in Bruce Almighty when Bruce (Jim Carey) makes Steve speak the crazy jibberish live on the air? Friggin hilarious
This lesson is awesome and the idea of switching the leading hand and the orchestration is great for being creative with all of your drum fills - plus he's got a nice sense of humour
It may not be the best teaching style for everyone...but as a conversation from a drummer to another drummer that already knows the lick, I like hearing about it this way better.
The most awesome thing you can do??? Is slow the playback to half speed and listen to Todd speak. It's like sitting down with him at the bar and after 3 hours of doing shots, let's talk about the Blushda!!
@gitchigoomi this is taken from his DVD as a promotion. At the beginning of the DVD he teaches all of the stickings properly, and then in this section demonstrates how to use them. If you bought the DVD you'd see he's a fantastic teacher
Does anyone who has criticised him so far actually realise that he is not a frisking teacher, like Mike Johnston or anyone, he is actually an incredible professional player, he just likes teaching. Just sit back and enjoy
Thanks Todd, thanks for clarifying an old lick that's been a favorite of mine for years and I was always mystified by it when I heard Tony Williams do it with Lifetime and Steve Smith on the Vital Information album and in clinic. I love the projectile vomit analogy too... very true if not used wisely.
Todd always uploads videos from the sickest fu**ing jaw dropping studios 😱 I guess that makes him a sick fu**ing jaw dropping drummer 🤷🏻♂️ Keep it up mate !
@WGIfan I think it's because some of these hybrid rudiment stuff are used only for snare drumming. So I guess the history was just who are the ones that applied it to the kit and made the lick famous. No idea where the name came from, just that it's like a onomatopoeia way of naming it.
@gitchigoomi He's demonstrating it in context. Besides, I have eyes and I can clearly see what he is doing and how he is playing the licks. Use your senses to figure it out! The good teachers are ones that DON"T teach you step by step like the viewer is a baby
@WGIfan also licks, at least in the drumset world (dunno about drum corps) are much more than what's written on the page. the history and stylistic approach make it much more than a sterile "swiss flam drag."
Todd is my fav drummer. He is so well rounded in playing different styles and has such a solid groove and great chops and with his feet too. So much more versatile than we see with Styx, I hope one day soon we see him playing in some sort of fusion band when he's ready to take a break with Styx.
@Tristnator4 I feel like even then you couldn't judge him as a teacher because you aren't having like a one on one with him where his goal is actually to TEACH, you know? I can say, after watching a lot of this DVD I have learned more about playing drums, both in being a better musician and learning some amazing new sticking ideas, than from a majority of the teachers I've had. You have to do a lot of work yourself too to make the most of his DVD I think..
"However you wanna stick it"....Hmm. Todd is a cool down to earth, bad ass drummer. Sucherman, seems very genuine to me. I love his sense a humor. Drummers, need to check their egos and find a sense of humor. Even Thomas Lang said he don't take himself seriously, yet he's serious about the craft.
I do something like this. I call it an inverted flam six stroke roll and I play it R(l)llrrl repeat. Or an inverted flam 9 stroke which R(l)llrrlR(l)ll repeat.
ok guy what sticking is he usesing? What is this is it a flam is it RL or LR or what . he dont say eney thing about sticking. can you guy help me with this or is their a web site that i can see some sticking on this?? ok hope some one can help me .Thank you
Nice video and Todd is a great drummer, but it would be nice if he broke the lick down and showed how to learn it instead of just demonstrating how well he can play it and how many variations of it he knows.
Daniel Casher he started with the premise that he wanted to demonstrate its variations to drummers that already understood the lick. He possibly made a reference to Steve Holmes at the end there where he said 'it's not a toy' whom also did a great video on this lick, he breaks it down to the bare bones too. It's likened to a flammed paradiddle diddle, with some Swiss triplet thrown in.
He is one of my favorite drummers in my book. The only thing I don't like about him is that when he shows you really hard licks, he doesn't break them down.
@gitchigoomi I agree with you about him being a lousy teacher. But he is not teaching, he is giving his interpretation of the lick and how it should be used. Just saying. Not looking for an argument.
Watch Gavin Harrison's video on the blushda, too. He applies it in some of the best ways I've ever heard (and some of the only!). The sticking is: Flam, double right, left. It's a swiss army triplet with a double on the right hand (or left, depending on which hand you're leading with).
The only thing I disliked was the (lack of) dynamics - it was like "let me play each and every note on every instrument at the very same, loudest possible volume". Great interpretation in 5s though.
@Tristnator4 well yourve found one with this nonsense statement how the fuck is he a lousy teacher?maybe you just dont get it but to me this guys not only a great player but an equally great teacher what more do you want?
A drummer as great as Todd deserves a nice practice room with a view (as well as $35K of gear). Much respect, Mr. S.
Todd is truly a drummer that amazing technically but he is musical with his playing as well. Also he switches from one "feel" to the next so seamlessly and makes it looks so damn easy. Love this dudes playing.
Such a technician and a sense of humor too! A great way to end a teaching moment with humor!
what a great room to have your kit in
He is so amazing. I saw him in a clinic last year, his solo's are second to none. Blew the whole room away. He's a really cool guy too, got to take a picure with him and he signed my methods & mechanics 2 dvd.

What a great video 👍🏼. I love his approach to playing this lick. “Mean it!”
Love that Todd. Not only a very fine top notch player, but he is a funny guy too.
When he does the projectile vomiting sound, does anyone else think he looks like Steve Corel in Bruce Almighty when Bruce (Jim Carey) makes Steve speak the crazy jibberish live on the air? Friggin hilarious
TomKPercussion spot on. lol
A young De Niro?? A young Pacino???? Or both!!!
Wow you’re insanely accurate with that comparison that’s sick 😂
This lesson is awesome and the idea of switching the leading hand and the orchestration is great for being creative with all of your drum fills - plus he's got a nice sense of humour
It may not be the best teaching style for everyone...but as a conversation from a drummer to another drummer that already knows the lick, I like hearing about it this way better.
incredible. So musical and creative!
The most awesome thing you can do??? Is slow the playback to half speed and listen to Todd speak. It's like sitting down with him at the bar and after 3 hours of doing shots, let's talk about the Blushda!!
Todd is such a cool guy and incredibly talented as well.
Greg Bissonette always uses the fill within his solos as well
@gitchigoomi this is taken from his DVD as a promotion. At the beginning of the DVD he teaches all of the stickings properly, and then in this section demonstrates how to use them. If you bought the DVD you'd see he's a fantastic teacher
Todd does a great job of exploring the possibilities of this lick :-)
Does anyone who has criticised him so far actually realise that he is not a frisking teacher, like Mike Johnston or anyone, he is actually an incredible professional player, he just likes teaching. Just sit back and enjoy

Damn, that's a sweet jam space. Beautiful kit too. Jealousy rising
Todd always uploads videos from the sickest fu**ing jaw dropping studios 😱 I guess that makes him a sick fu**ing jaw dropping drummer 🤷🏻♂️ Keep it up mate !
"This lick is not a toy." Hilarious! Love this guy. Anyone who criticizes him or this free content needs their head and grip examined.
I've seen so many more recent videos on the blushda that didn't need to be made because this one was here all along
If I'm not mistaken, I can hear him hit this lick a bit during the guitar solo in "Snowblind", on the 1997 "return to paradise" album
Sucherman, my new favorite drummer!
I'm so buying this dvd!
@WGIfan I think it's because some of these hybrid rudiment stuff are used only for snare drumming. So I guess the history was just who are the ones that applied it to the kit and made the lick famous. No idea where the name came from, just that it's like a onomatopoeia way of naming it.
Mostly this is a half of a flam drag... a little one-sided... but very sweet (half a rudi 😂)!
I appreciated your comment.
hey thanks for all your help on That you rule!!
that is one badass living room!
@gitchigoomi He's demonstrating it in context. Besides, I have eyes and I can clearly see what he is doing and how he is playing the licks. Use your senses to figure it out! The good teachers are ones that DON"T teach you step by step like the viewer is a baby
Are his drums tuned amazingly or is it just me??Sweet sounding snare..The whole kit sounds
amazing..It just adds to the wicked way he's playing it.
They are most definitely but the shells are very important too. There's also a lot to be said about how and where you hit the drums.
good things someone respects the lick drummers offer
This guy is up there.
@WGIfan also licks, at least in the drumset world (dunno about drum corps) are much more than what's written on the page. the history and stylistic approach make it much more than a sterile "swiss flam drag."
It basically a flamadiddle-diddle that can be accented on the first note on either hand
Just go to the following times and maybe a few seconds before and after.
3:28 to 3:33
3:09 feels like Bill Bruford's BBoom.
Todd is my fav drummer. He is so well rounded in playing different styles and has such a solid groove and great chops and with his feet too. So much more versatile than we see with Styx, I hope one day soon we see him playing in some sort of fusion band when he's ready to take a break with Styx.

excellent drummer

@gitchigoomi
i think that he has a right to show off, he plays for one of the biggest bends in history.
Hah what the fuck else would he do with his spare time other than tune and play those amazingly gorgeous drums?
I was cracking up at 1:10. That shit was funny....
4:52 Awesome stuff
@gitchigoomi he isn't teaching it, but showing ways to make it less agressive, as he said....
this video is just fucking awesome for some reason
ok guy what sticking is he usesing? What is this is it a flam is it RL or LR or what . he dont say eney thing about sticking. can you guy help me with this or is their a web site that i can see some sticking on this?? ok hope some one can help me .Thank you
hahaha! great drummer and humorist!
i like it for that agressiveness! why subtleness?
So.... you've played those crazy things and exampled for a secend in a little bit slowler, what we need to do now!!!
Thanks for the info! Great view - where do you (he) live?
Nice video and Todd is a great drummer, but it would be nice if he broke the lick down and showed how to learn it instead of just demonstrating how well he can play it and how many variations of it he knows.

Buy his dvd that this small excerpt is from.
Sir..............you have a nice looking and sounding kit....Im jalous...
1:16 😂😂👌👌👌
He's got a tasty touch.
hi agen guys is it right flamLLRRLLor right flamRRLLRR i no you can what ever but where do i start?
Its a rudiment called a gramma
RLRRL, just play with it till it loosens up.
...but that first RL is more of a flam
haha I love this guy
Sweet!. I think your microphones cost more than your kit! Damn. That's one fine sounding kit. (good job, engineer!)
what is the lick, how do you play it? what are the sticking patterns?
yeah, more teaching Todd! How about learning us your hand grip. Thats essential!
'spraying the room with projectile vomit".
Look this mansion !!
:0
However you want to stick it
He is one of my favorite drummers in my book. The only thing I don't like about him is that when he shows you really hard licks, he doesn't break them down.
@Tristnator4 there's no one way to use it.
would be nice if he showed us how to play it slow first. especially since it's such a mystifying lick as he says in the intro. really good playing.
can anyone tell me what the pattern is?
The common one that every one uses is (rL) RR L. Can be counted as 1 2+ 3
thanks a lot
The hair... It jiggles.
Hey look everyone, it's Nic Cage!!!
Damn, I thought this was the Thomas Pridgen lick. Schooled...
Pridgen studied A LOT of drummers you should check out who influenced him.
Vinnie Colaiuta is among the list for Thomas so maybe start with him?
***** there's a reason you're a fucktard, i suppose
@gitchigoomi I agree with you about him being a lousy teacher. But he is not teaching, he is giving his interpretation of the lick and how it should be used. Just saying. Not looking for an argument.
Where ever u want to stick it...lol
He should have shown the sticking.
Watch Gavin Harrison's video on the blushda, too. He applies it in some of the best ways I've ever heard (and some of the only!).
The sticking is: Flam, double right, left.
It's a swiss army triplet with a double on the right hand (or left, depending on which hand you're leading with).
Styx is definitely a more entertaining live act with Todd behind the kit…
@pooperscoopr69 Yeah, its like they give those Modern Drummer no. 1 Educational Video of the year awards out for nothing these days!
F*ck*ng awesome!!!! O_o
*steve Carell *
hahah funny ..
Coffee?! Anyone?!
The only thing I disliked was the (lack of) dynamics - it was like "let me play each and every note on every instrument at the very same, loudest possible volume". Great interpretation in 5s though.
flamRRL
flams rock
can someone pls explain how we do it ? ( rlrlr for example )
Oh, it's you again... leave gun at home! Note to self
1:16 convultion..fuck yea
Projectile vomiting? That's how it sounds when you play it.
1:16 WUT
You are so incredibly attractive
Haha *fricking
gbloudge gbloudge gbloudge xDD
indra iman
@Tristnator4 well yourve found one with this nonsense statement how the fuck is he a lousy teacher?maybe you just dont get it but to me this guys not only a great player but an equally great teacher what more do you want?
You have totally not listened at all as to what the man is tiring to convey.
Fake jazz.....
