Nice animations, Drew. BTW, the lights at the top that I mentioned on my blog were just me dreaming. Shopsmith never incorporated them into their design. The version of the plans that I reworked for them in the early 90’s were done to accommodate the larger 510 accessories, which made the entire “Workshop on the Wall” too big and awkward, IMHO.
For storing my Shopsmith stuff, I have several different locations. I built a wall mounted table storage rack, much less expensively than the Shopsmith model. I also built an accessory shelf where I store my fence, push sticks and pads, chuck keys, sanding discs, and riving knife and top saw guard. Most of the rest of the items are stored in an old vertical wood cabinet (lathe rests, tail stock, drive and live centers, chuck, bandsaw blades, sanding belts, etc.). The lathe tools have a lazy susan with pvc pipes vertically arranged that sits in a corner but gets put on a table next to the lathe when turning. The jointer rides in some drilled 2x4’s on a rolling cart with my miter saw and air compressor. The bandsaw and belt sander alternate between the end of the Shopsmith and the floor. I am out of room! But I want to buy a height adjustable table and put a storage cabinet under it, ala Tom at Woodshop Nerdery, then rearrange a few items.
Measuring the space under my Shopsmith (which has the large casters), I get a volume of 21" high by 22" deep by 48" wide. I'm envisioning a box with a lid and a shallow top compartment to store the floating tables, extension tubes and extendable legs. This would be my primary goal as I find storing these a real pain, the tubes tend to roll around and the surface of the floating tables is slick. My first inclination would be to put the box on casters but that would limit the box vertical height by at least 2". But does the box have to move at all? That's an interesting question. It wouldn't if the main body of the box had full-depth drawers and cubbies. By the way, the best way to store the bandsaw is upside down. I have a some 12" shelf brackets that I have positioned to support the table and it fits perfectly in the space between the edge of my garage door and the wall of my garage.
Hi Drew, I just stumbled across your channel while searching for shopsmith storage ideas. Thanks for at least sharing about this. I for one, would like to see more on Shopsmith storage. For those of us with small (micro) workspaces storage efficiency is a major issue. It's a small one car garage. It only takes about 5 minutes to have too many tools, Shopsmith parts, etc. all out on my workbench making it unusual for my project. I'm constantly moving and stacking. I'm just now getting to the point of designing something that will work for me. Good Luck.
I don't think tool chests would be super useful for the type of tools we use. With that being said I do think theyd be cool as a collector. I personally use a sheet of plywood with screws to hang everything. I do have a craftsman tool box for the little items such as bits. Obviously shop organization is an opinion.
I enjoy your videos and just subscribed because most of the time I watch on ROKU on my TV and it does not have the like or subscribe options on it. I don't remember which video it was on but you did a section on the Shopsmith Molder. If you have the , brain fart! The piece that the molder head mounts on the Craftsman molder head also fits. You can find them by the ton on E Bay. I think it is 5/8 mounting hole. That opens up the options immensely. You run across 2 different heads on them. There is a 3 blade and a 1 blade, I have never used a single blade head but it looks like it would be awkward, because you could only remove 1/3 the amount of wood at each rotation but on the plus side a set of cutters would be a lot cheaper. Enjoy the Shopsmith, One of the most Incredible machines that most people never heard of. Good luck on your channel and good luck in your builds!
Thanks for the algorithm help. A wall unit for my lathe stuff is the hope and under the shopsmith chest will be the main. Any other wall units will be minimal(I hope).

Ah, a miss read on my part. Oh and in case you missed it the email with my question was sent.
Hello Drew, thanks for doing this. I saw those plans (in Popular Mechanics) as well and thought they were so clever. I will look those up again.

Paul sellers has. Plans for something similar to the toolbox you describe.
I'll have a look at that. Thanks
Check out Harry j epstein tools. For that ww2 carpenter tool box. They got a bunch of them from surplus tools.
Strangly enough the box is still on facebook.

Good to have you aboard. I have seen the craftsman molder head but haven't look too much into mixing and matching. We shall see what the future holds.
How about some plans?
Most of what I found was through an image search "shopsmith storage system". Dig deep enough and you'll find it all.
So do you plan on putting shelves on your garage as well or do just the chest below the shop smith? Also commenting to help the algorithm 🎉🎉
