Your recent introspective “here’s who we are” set of videos *really* helped me to understand what the hell is going on. I have been here for years but this stuff is way more fun now that I “know” you better.
I think it's well worth the hassle to have a supply of black locust and/ or white oak wood aboard any wooden boat for projects and repairs underway. Nice work! That starlink mount is way nicer than anything you could have purchased.
That was great guitar music, ended just as he finished his nipples gadget at 5:56 ! I really got a rhythm going with it ! Gotta say, I realize youtube videos are important but when your out there, have portables or find someone with problems, the gear running from your solar electricity telling you where you are is far more important than starlink !
Love of the work, thoughtful and planned before the execution. Then craftsman all the way. And on the other side, care and feeding of the support crew (great documenting and editing). I’m down to you guys and the wind hippie. Legit OG.
Ruth, a great week. I enjoyed your prose in the introduction you ruthless traveler you. It was interesting to witness Garrett's problem solving skills.
If you shadow half a cell in your solar panel it will drop the entire panel power by 1/6. If you shade one cell it will drop the entire power by 1/3. If you shadow across a row of cells in the short direction it will kill almost all power production. Something to think about if you struggle to keep the battery banks up.
Hi, I´m following you, since the beginnig, from the Nw corner of Spain amazed by the persistence and great job. I´m worried that ypu made a mistake with the setting of the Starlink antenna. First, for removing the antenna now, you should pass a very long cable trough the hole in the wood support. This is not feasible-practical in a hurry, so I would suggest to install a connector in the wood support to remove tha antenna quickly. Second I´m not sure that the neck of the antenna support will be abe to deal with the bending force created on the antenna surface due to the wind. With the tripod base this force goes to the tripod base and then to the surface of support. I´ll crunch some numbers with 5-6 knots and check with Starlink or other users. Good work and Enjoy your trip!
Just remember any shaddows on the solar panels reduce their generation capacity.....what is wrong with making a permanent fixture on top of the hatch cover?
Even simple projects takes days. Lots of thinking, looking, designing, fabricating, installing, finishing, some more looking. Getting ready for a long trip.
The star link,is in a position that is susceptible to wave damage, but its probably the only really space to place it. Could I suggest that you add a piece of timber on edge underneath the board holding the antenna, this will strengthen it and stiffen it substantially.. Enjoy , and take time to have QUALITY TIME with each other, and relax.
Here's some tips, learned the hard way: when mating two surfaces (mast&ear) you need to shape those surfaces to match. Either put some over tight radius on the ear to make the screws squeeze the ear tight, this holds the piece horizontally, or chisel a step on the mast with a flat spot, this holds the ear vertically. The step can be made in stages with a smaller wedge underneath the ear, to make less damage on the mast. Also making the step with an angle would lock the ear and the wedge in place. Also, never ever try to hold a piece of wood with a metal screw/bolt/nail alone. You can tie it up with a thread/yarn/rope, but metal always rots and gives in. Every time, every metal. If a piece of wood needs to hold in place, especially if the piece of wood needs to hold any weight, it needs to rest on another piece of wood.
I was surprised Garret didn't relieve the inboard side of the ear to conform to the radius of the mast. Not a big deal though, with plenty of bedding compound. Your last sentence. That's good.
@@robertowen9798 Thanks! One would think it's not that important, with the butyl and everything, but the bedding is soft. So, when the boom rests on the ears and rocks, just by sitting on anchor, it wiggles the ears and the screw holes get wider with every wiggle. When there is no ledge to rest on, the screw holes widen downwards too. After enough wiggles, sea water will eventually travel into the screw cavity, rotting the screw and the mast.

Billions of people out of 8 billion have worse lifestyle than you guys. You worked for it, you are working for it, there must not be quilt, and also no "burn out" love what you do as you should
Love the carpentry work and producing some very fine work using limited resources. I can see that Garrett enjoys what he is doing with the wood and this makes the watching even more satisfying
Was really great to meet you in Chácala today. It’s one of our favorite anchorage’s makes we want to sail Angelique of Vancouver back down to Mexico, maybe after we cruise to Alaska this summer. Mike and Jacquie
Sometimes, your world can seem to shrink around you and can cause some problems in perspective of your goals and your outlooks. Please, please, please, realize how many that you "entertain" would give everything they have to be in your shoes, yours truly included. Not to put any guilt on anyone! Please realize how much we need you and your adventures. Thanks for all you give of yourselves. I for one appreciate it. Dan
tape sandpaper to the mast so you can shape the nipple ears? We can tell when Garetts mental health is back in sync with the universe because its no longer "just duct tape it on so we can get going" its "does this look right? maybe I need to adjust it a bit" :)
Garrett is a beast when it comes to working with wood. I am , or was, better with metal. It's been over 40+ yrs since I had a piece of metal in a forge.
Would like to suggest a ''Bright Work Party'' for your subscribers. Or maybe a few parties as you travel up the west coast. Maybe 40 or so subscribers putting 3 or 4 hours of painting, polishing, etc? Something like that?
The weight of the boom by itself is pretty substantial. I worked on a gaff schooner that didn't have a cunningham or other method of providing luff tension from the deck, and it never seemed to be a problem, even in heavy weather.
Question. What decided the direction you set the ‘wifie’ panel to face? Wait EVERY week for your vids guys , as I’ve done since finding you building Redaviva in the woods.
I spent years cruising the mexico coast..you will sooo regret going south..if you jest kept going all the way to costa rica you'd be ok...but there is no place to go from there....stay in baja..enjoy life.

A man working with his tools…Pure joy!
Ruth & Garrett your hands it's like gold!!!
It's very beautiful to see you have all days the music of your Smiles filling your boat with magic.
Ruth as always your music curation is without par
Your perpendicular drilling skills are impressive!
Очень хорошая работа по дереву!!! Удачи)))

Got my new Salt and Tar T-Shirt in the mail yesterday !
🙌 Yay! Send a photo if you like (salt.and.tar@gmail.com) thinking about adding some photos at the end of next episode ;)

Oh man!! That sun set at the end! I bet camera doesn’t do it justice! just wow!!!
😂 @Garret “no one likes an ugly hole” lmao
Maybe adding a piece of nylon or plastic material on top of the ears will help with wear and loading?
Watched from the start I love the way you two love each other and show it in your banter all the best from Queensland Australia
Love it so much keep it up as always 💘
Dude you plug in was cool.
You are one hell of a great Craftsmen for sure....
Projects well done. I may have said it before, but it deserves repeating. Love your music choices. Sail-on!

Sooo good , time well spent watching you guys live my dream ah.👀🙏
Enjoyed the woodworking skills. Thanks.
My Buehler boat build is only the cradle at the moment, but you're keeping me going.
I would call them mast ears ❤
The little things, make the Dream Work. Thanks :)
Another great video, thanks!
Haven't watched in a couple of months...good to see you well and happy.

Very beautiful 😊👍
Just woke up and read the title(what joy), thought it read "preparing to make mines". Who were you trying to make go bang? 😂😂😂😂 excellent as always 💗
I see that you gave up on the bangs, but the videos are still very fantastic and thanks for sharing them all!!

Garrett added a stiffening web under the antenna mount, I guess you must’ve missed that clip.
😎👍🍻

_Nubbles!_ Not to be confuzzled w/ nibbles …

The music at (21.32) I love it! Where can I get get it?
Why not make it extendable , or hinge it so it swings out?
Please don’t burn out… screw us, it matters that you stay true to what you know is right.
Ruth, just curious what software do you use to edith your video?
I still use free, stock iMovie 🙌 keeping it simple ;)

What happened to that couple they were swapping with? That was kinda weird huh?
Hmmm... Mast "ears" are kind of wimpy sounding.... How about mast "shoulders"?

😀👍👍👍❤
May I suggest “mast nubbles”?
🤣 love it!
19:28 to 1945 Amen.
Mast shoulders?
Thumbs
😊😂❤
Mast hips! Or mast ears... Hips sto your pants falling down . So mast hips
While I like mast nipples they are actually call mast thumbs...typically you attach 4 or 5 around the aft 3/4 [ of the mast
Mast shoulders, not ears or nipples. 😉
I have been watching your channel for a long time and i enjoy your videos but your excessively loud mucic spoils the video and it is not necessary.
Noted, thanks 👍
