- Joni MItchell - In France They Kiss on Main Street - Bassline
Maybe I dared too much but this is such a fantastic line...I hope Jaco will forgive me.
The really messed up thing-Jaco was almost certainly improvising that badass line.
Improvising is far easier than playing by sheet music. Take it from a guitarist
A superb and accurate rendition ofJaco’s awesome playing. Great playing!
I think Jaco would have loved this tip of the hat! It's a well played tribute, and a terrific way show non-musicians just how much more the bass contributes than they might have realized.
On the other hand, using Jaco Pastorius as an example, as all who remember him would agree, is a rather EXTREME one!
Nicely done...
I adore this track but have never really paid attention to the bass specifically before, its such a busy song, but now I see the bass drives it all. You played it so beautifully, thanks so much for opening up my ears!
Rainbow...Jaco drove the rhythm, the harmony parts, the groove, and repeatedly filled in melody. On bass...busy, as Joni is in unconventional open tuning.
@@kevinebarron If he'd restrained himself to playing half as many notes it would have been better.
Those harmonic drops are awesome! Beautiful groove.
Thank you for showing us that playing Jaco is possible. You are excellent!
Well, maybe as good as he did in the record! The solo it's one of musical nightmares! Anyway, I think his golden period has been '76-'80 but I'd be happy to play at 1/100 of his '85 value!
Poor old Jaco...what a sad end : (
Thanks for putting this up. It was great & you nailed it. I was at that concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl when they recorded it for Miles of Aisles. What a day!
I Think Joco would be more than pleased. Very Nice Job! Thanks' for the video! Your Bass Pal, Joseph
Nice work! One of my favorite bass lines, too. Got me hooked on Joni Mitchel. A friend turned me on to this album and was pretty unfamiliar with Mitchel. I started listening and was immediately saying "Who's in that BAND." What a surprise to find most of the Pat Metheney Group (one era or another) backing up a pop star.
Well I don't think of her as just a pop star anymore, needless to say.
Loved it, brother. Great job on one of the really great bass lines from Jaco Pastorius. I'm inspired.
Great job on an insanely creative bassline. Thanks for helping keep this brilliant song alive.
Still the coolest cover of this bass track on UA-cam. LOL.
Awesome! Absolutely awesome!
You are living the dream for all Jaco fans. Beautiful. Thanks!
Outstanding job, ato71. One of my favorite tunes.
So relaxed!
nice, and a great voice with that Bass.....
eh la madonna ! questo e' gia' il terzo o il quarto dei tuoi video che va tra i miei favorites...sei spettacolare, come sempre!
Great cover with a beautiful bass
Outstanding. Well done!
A beautiful tribute.
At his best, Jaco was simply the greatest bassist of all time.
Salute' very fine Bass playing indeed...you would be an asset to any band
Outstanding!
quanto talento !!!
There's at least one other "In France..." bassline on youtube. I'm not gonna pick sides here, but this is fantastic. Oh, and Jaco's take is pretty good, too... ( don't think it's him on the Summer Lawns album version but a lot of people like his live version even more than the studio reccid).
you are most excellent player!!!!! wow
This is the only cover version of this bass part that I can find that accurately replicates that ingenious major-seventh riff at 0:17, which is my favorite individual part of this incredible song.
Tres bon ,dans le style de Pastorius a vrai dire , super !...
Fantastic!!
fantastic line indeed , totaly agree , nice
Yup. Awesome
I think you did a great job. You look stress free and that you're enjoying the groove.
Really enjoyed that 👏 thanks and well done ✊
Fantastic job. 1:12!!
harmonics on a bass at fret 5 --- did not know this could be done....now I hear more
Nunca havia pesquisado sobre pessoas que pudessem fazer a linha de baixo do Jaco para esta musica, realmente fantástico, parabéns sou fã do Jaco e seu também. (Português-Brasil) :)
Bravo ! I was searching for a demo of this incredible bassline and yours is just perfect for my learning.
very good and impressive!
You bagged the Jaco magic 🎉👌
Well, I like his groovy and tastefully lyrical lines the most (a remark you made, the chicken, Continuum to name some) since I'm not able to play tunes like Havona ; )
Thanks for the apreciation and for sharing your feelings.
Are we sure this guy is actually human? What I just saw was unbelievable. The best bass player I have ever seen since Jaco.
I would never have thought such a performance, so true to the original and APPARENTLY effortless was possible. Bravo!!
Nailed it! Nice. On the live video, sadly, they only pan past Jaco a few times. Would have loved to have had a camera isolated on him while he was plying his craft.
Grande Ato!!! Hai fatto un lavoro egregio! Fedelissimo all'originale in tutto....anche nel suono! Veramente un gran bel lavoro, amico mio...BRAVO!!!
Fabio
Brilliant! Really nice and inspiring, thank you.
Bravo sir well done
You did a GREAT JOB with this! This version is a song that is on my Desert Island Disc list!
You killin’ it brothaman
You are one cool dude and a great player. Wish I could play bass like that. Great choice of song too. More please.
Great!!
Fan-freaking-tastic! I've been learning this one myself... just an overwhelmingly fun line to play along with.
Love it. Wz just checking out some more recent attempts. But this is great. Nice one!
Cool, I'm really digging it. Thanks for brighting up my day!
You, Sir, are amazing!
congratulation for your skill and style
Gran parte del suono è merito tuo!!!! Di nuovo complimentoni, Alessio!
Fabio
You gots da feelin bro!
fantastic job! great tune one of my favorite jaco performances. - ivanmike from talkbass.
Agreed! The British guy's name was "Guy Cee" or something like that. I wonder why that video is not up anymore. In any case, what we have here is a great job as well... Congratulations, Mr. Ato71!
Bravo! Great tone and groove!
sounds great! that's a beautiful bass you have there.
Amazing job! i love this bassline...and you nailed it.
fantastic - one of my favorite jaco lines and you pulled it off without a hitch! subbed
Wow, probably my favorite Jaco tune of all time. Well done my friend, I hate the way you make it look so easy... :)
hahahaha....no pain! lol ...badass great work!!!!
You nailed it here. I'm surprised to see Jaco played a fretted Jazz on the live version in '79. I assumed he only played his fretless Jazz Bass.
And here I've been trying to duplicate that on my fretless...pfft...time to get new glasses!!
Amazing, brother! You make it look easy!
I didn't know Robert Downey jr. played bass :). Now seriously, you totally nailed it ! great playing !
Ah... Thanks Didn't know that... well you did a super job!
:)
Quite superb. Thank you. And not reading it. Even better.
Easier for me: I can't read music 😀
Thanks for the apreciation and envios for you having seen Jaco (and what Jaco!) live.
@tall32guy I stand corrected. I sat at the Shadows & Light concert at the SB Bowl, where it was recorded. I wasn't at the Miles of AIsles show, unless there was a time warp & Robben Ford switched faces with Pat Metheny.
I got this saved as one as my favs :)
I LOVE your bass playing on this track. You've nailed every part. It sounds awesome. You've also got a great tone. I tried learning this a few years ago but failed miserably. I might try again after seeing your video. I don't suppose you have the transcription? Cheers, Andy
great job man! that's a really difficult song to play by ear! sounds great!
Dear mr. ato,
Could you have a partitur for this song?
you really exacly transcribe this awesome song.
you great man.
You are the man!
Just how many times, did you rehearse it? A hundred, maybe thousand?
Otherwise fantastic memory - and technique too! I would not be able to play the bass notes so perfectly, unless I had rehearsed the song many many times. And even looking so relaxed playing it by ear. Amazing!!!
Actually, it was for Shadows and Light. Miles of Aisles was from 1974 and as you know the concert this was from was in 1979. :)
Still my fav cove of this epic bass line… Yeah, I’m just sitting back killing the greatest baseline ever…. You are a MONSTER Sir! (In a good way). Take care!~
Thanks man. Am not able to play that anymore, though 😁
a very nice lighting in your room.
Awesome!! Killer job!!
Grazie Fabio,
avevo un po' di timore a confrontarmi con un mostro sacro come Jaco, ma questa linea è troppo bella! Il suono è tutto merito del basso (tutto ponte e tono praticamente chiuso e gli armonici escono di brutto).
Alessio
Lovely harmonics
Grande Ale!
Well, actually I don't have it at the moment but it's on my list: having studied the line note by note I just want to take advantage of that and do a useful job for others.
So far I've transcribed the first 20 bars (since I play by ear it's quite hard for me)... I'll let you know.
Thanks a lot for the apreciation.
Alessio
bonjour from Paris.....
Bravo!
bravissimo alessio complimenti
Grazie Antonio: troppo buono!
The bass line totally drives this version of the song!
Good job ! Great bass work.
grazie mille!
There used to be an awesome playalong by a British guy (whose name I now forget) that got a LOT of views and even a couple copycats playing to it and saying it was theirs! LOL In any case, your was about as good as his! Good job mister. :)
good job!
LMAO lov this!
Wow
Could you please also do Dry Cleaner and Black Crow? I danced with my baby daughter every morning for a year with this album hoping she would remember. At 18 now, she still loves Jaco!
Nice!
THIS IS FUCKING GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jaco is up there tipping his hat.
@sixfingr, I agree with you!
Excellent!! please play the "black crow" song!!!!
