Sounds like Jaco's spirit is being channeled through you. I think most bass players who are fans of this tune, after seeing this video, probably said to themselves- "why bother even trying - this guy nailed it". I can't imagine how much time and energy you put into getting the exact tone just right - let alone hitting every note right on time and with the correct touch/force. I bet if Jaco saw this, he'd give you a high five and great big hug. His masterpiece was beautifully rendered here in all its glory.
So awesome to find other people who share a deep love for this song. Joni has so many songs that hit me on an emotional level but I don't think any can top this one. And what an amazing rendition!
Somehow this tune’s been ringing in my ears for days now. All these comforting notes… stunning every time. Thanks for being so kind as to keeping this song alive. A true masterpiece indeed, and you delivered it gorgeously on every fretless player’s wet dream…
Thank you so much, I’m glad you appreciate it. This song can make me laugh, it can make me cry, in fact the album is absolutely my all time favourite. If I could have only one album for eternity, Hejira would be it! Best things
Here, decades after first listening to this set of songs, I continue to find new treasures to admire, study again, and appreciate more fully. Thanks Joni and Jaco.
Well done. Love this album - this is my favorite song from the album. Recently found Pastorius through Portrait of Tracy and then rediscovered him again reading about this album - man was a bass legend.
Thank you for your comment. It’s the same for me, this album is my favourite album, period, if I could have just one album for the rest of my life it would be this. And this is also my favourite song from the album. Jaco is just superlative!
Absolutely wonderful! I've always thought there is a melancholic sound to fretless bass or maybe just the bass track on this song - Like it has it's own tale to tell. I recall an interview where JM said something about the bass being it's own instrument and not just there to play the root of the song. This demonstrates that so well and your playing really brought that to my fore. Wonderful. thank you!
Thank you Rob. That's an awesome tune, as it happens I recorded it for an album with a cover band I play for, we should be finishing the album soon, and I will post it on here. Thanks for subscribing. Best things.
Thank you so much Steve. It was listening to Joni Mitchell with Jaco, that started my fretless bass journey, and this song in particular 😊 Thanks for subscribing, I will be doing more videos soon.
Thank you so much Bruce, I am proud in a small way, but I have just copied these guys, they created it! Not to say I can’t create, but I do humbly acknowledge the genius of players like Jaco. I really appreciate your comment and subscription. Best things
Thank you that’s very kind of you to say. And yes it is an awesome bass, it was built for me by Electric Wood in 1994, and it is a Wal MkII Custom. You can get get info m on them here - walbasses.co.uk/ Please like and subscribe. Best things
I’m not sure if you are familiar with Wal basses? They are quite different from most active basses in that instead of separate bass, mid and treble controls, the Wal has one filter tone control for each pickup. If you visit their website you can find out more info on how they work, and there are loads of videos on UA-cam with people demoing them For this video I set my Wal with 75% bridge pickup, and both tone controls about halfway open. The other thing for getting a great fretless tone is to love the music you are playing! Thanks for your comment, and please like and subscribe. Best things
