    Transcribed Gerald’s solo... can’t believe how it seems to flow out of him with such ease and delight

    I was disappointed for about 30 seconds that this wasn't Mehldau's "Song Song"--and then I realized this is a really great tune, too, and sweet, tasteful performance. Into the rotation it goes.

    Ben Wendel, Wayne Escoffery, Anibal Rojas, Victor Goines, Joshua Redman, Jerry Bergonzi, George Gergone, Chris Potter, Courtney Pine, Ed Calle, Michael Breaker, Ernie Watts, Bob Berg, Joe Farrell, John Coltrane ... modern tenorists.
    James Carter is in a league all by himself on all saxophones and clarinets - yes, all by himself creatively and dexterously.
    His Dolphian-Newtonian moonlighting on flute is yet in its embryonic stage of perfection - doubtlessly on account of his time inadequacy.
    Obviously, on tenor saxophone, the modern lineage can be traced back to Dr. John William Coltrane, saxophonist par excellence.
    Shawn "Thunder" Wallace has opted for professorial instructing.

    • @dontgetsentalink
      @dontgetsentalink 6 років тому +1

      wyndhl eodumegwu what is this bullshit lmao, James carter is nowhere near the level of Chris potter and you’re impressed by what? His ability to make weirdass noises out of his horn and playing some mild bebop lines? Love James Carter all you want, but never say he is above anyone, especially legends like berg, brecker, potter and others...

    what are the chords to this song

    • @LukeTheringMusic
      @LukeTheringMusic 8 років тому +5

      Db | Gbmin(maj7)/Db | Gb/Db | C/Db ...OR
      Db | Dbaug | Gb/Db | Gbmin/Db
      ending vamp is something like: Db | Gb/Db | Ebdim7b5/Db | C/Db
      Lots of little variations throughout, but that's some of the chords I can sort of pin down. The bass/sax line later gets more outside, with like Ebadd4/Db and Dadd4/Db. I think.

    • @LukeTheringMusic

      I believe Mr. Wendel sells charts of his tunes; drop him a line.

    • @cardboardmusic
      @cardboardmusic 7 років тому +7

      Or just transcribe it yourself - you've got the chords - you'll learn so much by working out other peoples music.

    • @drewedwards1748
      @drewedwards1748 5 років тому

      @@LukeTheringMusic I actually got to talk to Ben Wendel and Aaron Parks about after seeing The Seasons band in Santa Cruz. They played this tune. I really wanted to know how they thought about this song harmonically, because the chart sold online is just melody and the ostinato bassline.
      They were saying they pretty much just think "Db | something else | Db | something else" ... Which was frustrating lol. But I think that freedom is part of what gives this song its magical quality.
      That said, I definitely hear the harmony you transcribed various times. It's a fun one to reharmonize too, like Db | F7b13 | Gb | A7 | Db/Ab | G9 | Gb | Gb- ... etc. Absolutely adore this tune.
