You passed very close to my home village near Kalavrita. These villages are indeed empty nowadays except for few elders. These parts of experienced huge internal migration to Patras, Athens or the lowlands generally as well as immigration to other countries like the US , Germany or Australia. Great beauty though as you've probably witnessed. Best wishes!
We were actually wondering why that kind of beautiful villages have so little population.. makes sense now, in Romania as well alot of people have migrated in search for a better living. Thank you for the comment!
Well, to be completely honest we didn't mind them too much this time. The view going down the mountain and overlooking the sea and bridge was waaaaay more spectacular than going up. ...and we had to turn around 3 times that day :))))
Greece has an amazing mix of seas and high hills/mountains really close to the shoreline. Mix those and you get these amazing landscapes, pretty unique IMHO. Thanks for watching!
Congrats ...Very nice Ride...I am from Patras, and i have gone to the mountain (Panahaiko) many times using Mtb (on the roads with snow) or by KTM 640 Hard Enduro (few times)
@@motorcyclingTo next time you are in belgrade tell us to drink coffee and meet you or if you need something in the spring the first driving bucovina romania all the best greetings
So glad to see a vstrom doing off-road riding. One question though, don't you find the bike a bit low, I would like more ground clearance on my Vstrom but cannot find any kits to raise them?
Yes, it is a little low. You can find raising kits, one exemple is this: www.marselus.com/en/d/sada-pro-zvyseni-svetle-vysky--suzuki-v-strom-1000-od-rv-2014-1000267/
Not quite. Assess. Plan. Focus. Execute. Repeat. :D If you follow the other videos you'll find alot more dodgy conditions, it is something you have to deal with on these trails, no getting around them. Fear doesn't help either. And always - if the response is not "Yes, can do it with an acceptable degree of certainty" then the answer should be by default "Do not cross, backtrack".
Well, to be honest I don't give it much thought. Oil it once in a while. I am thinking about getting a chain oiler, the last chain didn't last very long...
Excellent trip report, guys! Is that a Mitas E-07 on the KTM (rear)? Are you happy with it? I'm just about to replace my TKC 80 with this tire. Hopefully it will last longer in terms of mileage even though I'm aware I'll sacrifice some off-road grip. Bafta!
The rear was the Mitas E07+, the plus has a different thread pattern than the plain E07 and seems to have better grup too. Very impressed, however it only lasted for ~6500 km which is not great, not terrible :)
Very good. Much better Greek music than your choice of music in earlier Mongolian videos ;@). Were wild dogs a real problem in Greece? Possibly not if you are riding faster when they strike? Only if riding slow? I heard that there can be big packs of wild dogs which are really dangerous for hikers and cyclists as they cannot get away from them but on motorbike it may be easier to escape and leave them behind? Also have you considered riding in Turkey? Supposed to be very beautiful in their mountains.
It's tricky trying to run faster as you approach them, I always thought they asess the distance/speed correctly until I saw one dog effectively ramming the motorcycle in front of me in Mongolia. Since then I would rather approach them slowly, give them a chance to properly adjust their speed and move out of the way. If you do that they would only chase you for a short distance and give out once you are outside the area they protect. When they are parallel to you you can hammer it, the risk of them getting in front of you is verry small by then. Turkey is an option, didn't actually ride there, only went through (when going to Georgia and Mongolia)
@@motorcyclingTo I saw a vid here on YT about about 18 months ago of a cyclist in rural Greece being chased by a pack of about 30 wild dogs. It was terrifying. Unfortunately cannot find it not that I want to watch it again as really scary. I think if on a motorcycle even if the dog does try to sinks its teeth into you, you have your motorcycle gear i.e. Kevlar trousers to protect you wheres as hiker or cyclists tends not to have reinforced clothing. Or carry an AR15. Problem solved. Btw your bike skills are very good riding these good but heavier adventure bikes. For me a little bit lighter is better. Thanks for replying.
Holy crap, that sounds scary. If a big pack is involved going down (motorcycle or bicycle) is not gonna be fun to say the least. On offroad we have stray or shepard dogs in Romania too so we know how to handle them. Check out this video - got startled by a Caucasian dog the size of a wolf in Georgia 27:36 ua-cam.com/video/fL2lYYi5Yrw/v-deo.html
@@motorcyclingTo Wow he was a friendly big dog wagging his tail. The dangerous ones go straight for your boots or ankles snarling showing all teeth. I think with motorcycle and all the gear and boots you are not so vulnerable although they could still knock you off if you swerved and skidded to avoid them. Wild dogs seem to be a problem as you travel east into Caucasian lands and further east. Although in France wolves have been reintroduced and talk of bears as well.
Thank you Erik. Here is the GPS for TET Greece - www.transeurotrail.org/greece/ (there is one GPS for each country). Always check before you leave for a new version, we ended up in some dead ends which were corrected after members of the community reported them to the linesman.
Thank you mate, glad you like it. Stickers and T shirts are work in progress, please have a look on facebook.com/motorcyclingTO/ will post there when they're ready :)
The bikes were absolutely flawless... neither of them didn't miss a beat. Both of them were (especially when loaded) somewhat heavier than what most people would consider comfortable in that terrain though. Each of them has their own specific strenghts and weaknesses, the V-Strom in my opinion has the lower height, the KTM gives out incredible amounts of heat especially when riding slowly. Actually the only mechanical problem we had during this entire trip was a broken peg support on the V-Strom. That was due to a small mishap though, you will see all about it in the next episode :)
motorcyclingTO thanks for the reply. I’m very interested in that V-Strom. Reliability is paramount to me as I live in Africa with zero service support.
Dude! Horrible to watch. The depths at the sides! I I'm also have the 1190 R and i know from experience how slippery all of a sudden the front tire can become out of the blue. Sometimes with a speed of only 40 km per hour from the starting of the drop me and my bike were laying a few meters away. So with all these steep depths on the side.🙈 Maybe it looks worse on the film instead of actually being there but respect!👍

Dont you fear of falling of from cliff in such dangerous terrain?
How does it feel like to drive in such terrain ? Does it give you adrenaline rush?

Cool video. I wonder how you maintain your chain while such muddy journey? Do you clean chain or only lube it?

Wow... good to know :))
And please, how difficult was to find some petrol station? Do you know how many mileage max you did at once? Thanks
For our bikes it was not that difficult, I have about 300 range on my KTM, Vlad has even more on his Vstrom
@@motorcyclingTo Perfect. Thank you so much. I soon go on my Tenere 700, it should also do 300 km easily. Thank you for such a quick response guys
