Lol the song Untitled? From Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished? Because if that's what you're talking about I agree; I'm surprised that's not on the radio all the time
"Hi everyone, Anthony Fantano here; the internet's busiest music nerd. And it's time for a review of the..." ...I wonder how many times I've heard this so far.
First I love you man :) But sitting with any Animal Collective related record and letting it grow is, for me one of the things I enjoy most about the experience. The sometimes incomprehensible lyrics, the hidden sounds and sub rhythms, all of that kind of takes on an Easter egg like quality. Its multipurposed; you may love it or hate it at face value but behind its initial impact is where their magic happens, and it only happens as you give it time and as you give it time your subconscious will do the rest.
I totally agree. After hearing "Little Fang" I figured the album would verge on the more poppy and approachable side similar to Merriweather Post. I think the novelty of "Little Fang" does not represent the album as a whole which is rather unfortunate to the rest of the record.
The opening track is one of the best openers I've heard, that being said though the album doesn't really have a proper closing track, but I'd give the album at lease a 7 still
Hey Fantano can you do a list for us please? It could be anything, your favourite singers, weirdest albums, top 10 nirvana songs, 10 musicians you wanna bang anything man.
What Fantano doesn't get - Avey Tare is an artist and doesn't care about meeting your expectations of traditional sounding music or something you will like. It's a psychedelic trip. The effects that affect you are integral to the music and the atmosphere. But it's kind of fitting that mainstream hipsters don't like it - I'd be more worried if it were any other way!
considering there was only 3-4 'meh' tracks on an otherwise excellent outing by avey, I'd give it a 7. Just like 'Down There' this one is a grower and I can tell by the way you glossed over some of the more epic moments on here (especially - That It Won't Grow), I can tell you didn't really give this it's proper time to shine. Most of Aveys stuff creeps hard. All that being said, I cannot relate to most of what you said. Your driving points makes no sense. You could argue the same thing about Panda Bears last outing (the lack of emotion) but not here. 'Overblown with effects' (that was centipede hz. Shit, even Down There was 'worse' in that category than this one. For Avey this is medium effects/trickery wise and I view it as such. You make it sound like it was Centipede HZ times three or something. Not even close. The amount and saturation of effects are fine. ), 'Not something to Listen through' (Oh, you got "Person Pitch" or "Feels" or "Strawberry Jam" or all on the first listen? Congrats to you for being so hip. Also, the very best albums take a bit to digest so that point makes no sense. Mirrored, Turn on the Bright Lights, Aeroplane Over the Sea, etc. 'Down There' was very much like that and is now a favorite of mine and this one seems to be growing as well), 'twisted and tortured to the point where they are sapped of any likeable characteristics, unenjoyable, uninteresting, etc'. Did we listen to the same album? This stuff is bursting with emotion and color. That moment in "That it wont grow" (that song is like some sort of epic centerpiece to the album with one hell of an emotional burst in the middle), Your Card, Blind Babe, Little Fang, Catchy was Contagious, Roses on the Window, Modern Days E, etc. "Bizarre aesthetic" ? Dude, I've said it before and I'll say it again, there are just some things in psychedelia you don't get. Clearly this is one of them. Either that or you didn't really listen to this as much as you should have... I wrote it off at first but gave it proper time to sit and then came back to it. Was so much better than I remembered. Again, this album is a big-time creeper. Just like 'Down There'. And, 'Down There' was fucking brilliant.
I COMPLETELY agree!!! I think this, along with Down There, are grossly underrated. I feel this review was a bit shallow and I was a bit disappointed after hearing his take.
Robert Sandroff I agree on Enter the Slasher House. Didn't love Down There, but some parts were great. I think Slasher House is pretty outstanding, with the exception of a few spots that sound pretty empty. But hey, there are only three members :P
I literally listened to little fang bc it had a star next to it and then let the next two songs play and couldn’t understand it so shut it off. But then I played those songs again. Then I started listening further and eventually played it from start to finish. Now I play it semi daily and have a copy of it on vinyl. Shit grew on me hard. It’s honestly one of my favorites and it’s funny bc I hadn’t listened to AnCo before this. iTunes recommended it and now look where we are
I think that most of the issues that you point out are valid criticisms of this record, but there are some moments where I think Avey Tare and company are able to successfully channel this super abrasive, high-energy sound into really cool and memorable songs. "Blind Babe," for example, is way more memorable than "The Outlaw" or "Roses On the Window." There's an energy on that song (and a few others) that isn't found in many of the other tracks. I'd say strong 6 to light 7.
***** i really dont like strawberry jam, sorry. i can almost say its my most hated album by animal collective. ive tried so hard so many times to revisit it over some time has passed and i dont like it for many many reasons. but thats just my opinion, which many hard core anco fans usually disagree with. ive listened why people love it and i just cant get on board with it. but i love spirit theyre gone., feels, MPP, and sung tongs the most of all, then again there is two or three EPs i havent heard, or dont remember listening to.
What is great about Animal Collective is that your opinion will change. Upon further listening you get a different grasp on the album because you are a different person every day. The albums are thick and complicated like any individual person, they are very malleable and mold to whatever it is you are seeking at that moment. It's quite magical and makes it nearly impossible to decide which is the best.
You may not have positive feelings about these three but I was still curious as to what you thought of them: 1. Goldlink - The God Complex 2. Gee Watts - 199X 3. Mobb Deep - The Infamous Mobb Deep
Interesting thoughts, I find this LP to be considerably less noisy and densely packed than Centipede Hz. Though they are certainly sonically and aesthetically similar albums.
Although I was expecting something closer to Little Fang, what I got was something I could enjoy through a one time listen. Like you had mentioned, a lot of the noises were distracting, obnoxious, and downright hard to listen to, but I think they sort of fit well with the whole "Monster Mash" theme. I would give it a 7.5/10. Thank you for making your awesome review and keep up the good work!
thanks for the review, I enjoyed it and am considering following your channel. I myself don't give albums grades of any kind, I either like it or don't. I appreciate everything that was said in the review. even with a "soft 5" I am still very much interested in seeing them live in a couple days.
Man... I've listened/watched Little Fang's official music video so much that I kinda feel guilty not buying the album, haha. That music video is really well done... I'm probably going to check the album out anyway just to have Little Fang, I'll likely enjoy a few other tracks as well.
The only thing I don't really like his reliance on extreme effects on his vocals, he's been doing this for all of his releases and the appeal has worn off a while ago.
I like the album, but my big problem with it is the lack of harmonies from Deeradorian. She has such a beautiful voice and she is only heard on a couple of tracks quietly in the distance.
I agree with what you say about some of the tracks, and the overuse of the effects...But there are a few really standout songs here, impressive in any catalogue much less Avey Tares. Catchy was Contagious, Roses on the Window, A Sender, all excellent tracks. I agree the album has an really strange aesthetic. Great review.
I respect your reviews highly and will sit through your reviews with a sense of understanding what you meant, now i dont agree with all your reviews but i still respect them and give you the credibility of why your opinion is well thought out and deserved. it would be awesome if you reviewed "Retro Lakes" L.P.s and singles as We are changing our name now and releasing more material. just a thought! will continue to watch your videos. hopefully could watch a review of one my works someday
You're a cool dude and your intense love of music is obvious in all your reviews. I've been subscribed to you for years. Anyways, I liked this album but I can understand why you didn't like it as much as I did. If you had to choose between chocolate milk and strawberry milk, which would you choose?
Hey mate, this comment isn't specific to this video, but I've been thinking when I watch your reviews that when you're reviewing an artist with previous releases (which you haven't already reviewed), it'd be good if you gave their older albums (or maybe one or two of them) a score as well. I know you usually delve into previous releases to give some context, but it'd be interesting for the sake of comparison, saying in brief what you rate their older material before rating the current release. Keep up the good work man!
At first listens, a conscious mind will find it as a blaring sound, inaudible and indecipherable, but its really about getting within the sound and reaching that higher plane of subconsciousness which cannot be communicated easily as (e.g. 'little fang') but in fragments (as in 'kid A') I'm talking about the content, the sounds have so many possibilities that it could branch out into many ideas from themselves. try listening with enhanced senses instead. perhaps then "All will be revealed," son.
Great review man! I feel exactly the same way about Centipede Hz, so I probably won't end up checking this out. Also you should totes review the new Manchester Orchestra record, Cope.
I thought Down There and C Hz were a lot better than the consensus, but I listened to most of this today and I'm agreeing with you so far. Fx on every vocal gets annoying. Same keeps me from loving Youth Lagoon. If you like Little Fang, check out White Williams' Smoke album.
i feel like you're comparing this release to AC releases, isn't that a bit unfair? that's why he made a side project after all, to stray from what's usual for his musical expression
Did you hear the new BBNG? I know it's not out until next month, but wooooooooo boi. It's straight up fire. The second track sounds like TNGHT meets jazz music. These guys just keep getting better and better. Thanks for giving these dudes so much exposure - they definitely deserve it. Also, lol hipster y u dress so hipster? xD u prolly listen 2 bands i havnt even herd, right?? lol
I hate to say it but the end result came off as a "less-good" version of Animal Collective. When I heard Little Fang I expected the whole album to be something different. It's not bad, but it doesn't stand out at all.
I was looking forward to this album after Little Fang, but as I went through the whole thing it felt like betrayal a little. I admire most of Animal Collective's work but I was a little let down in this one. Although there are some melodies I can really like but I would then have to listen through the songs that I can't bring myself to like. I would say the songs past little fang are more better than the ones that kick off the album
This review struck a nerve with me. To refer to Avey's Down There (I think its a highly underrated album) as "self-indulgent" is hypocritical. Isn't the very act of posting your opinion of whether someone else's music is good or not self-indulgent? We can all decide whether or not we like someone's creation but to assume the public should know your taste is rather self-indulgent. This is why I dislike sites like Pitchfork (though I admit this guy is not nearly as snoody as Pitchfork's writers *blah*)
I think it's an incredible album, one of the best I've ever heard. I strongly disagree about there not being interesting tunes on the album, as this album has the most hooks and catchy melodies I've ever heard on a single LP. All the songs are just constantly stuck in my head all day. However, I agree that it might have benefitted from slightly less effects. But I don't think they ruin the album - it's still a brilliant record in my opinion. I love Avey.
Yeah I also felt deceived when, after hearing Little Fang and was really excited to hear the rest of the album, I listened to Strange Colores and was extremely disappointed :/
I think most all of Anco is fantastic. Every once in a while there are some songs I don't really like, but still a great group. Centipede Hz and Sung Tongs are their best albums in my opinion I don't get why you didn't like Centipede as much but whatevs.
What do you mean Avey Tare doesn't have a pop sensibility? Haven't you heard "Untitled"?
Lol the song Untitled? From Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished? Because if that's what you're talking about I agree; I'm surprised that's not on the radio all the time
Avey Tare could do Wheels on the Bus and it would be fucking awesome.
avey doing wheels on the bus? SIGN! ME! UP!
avey tare is something special
Disc 1's got something that Disc 2 doesn't have

Thoughts on the new Avey Tare LP: Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks - Enter The Slasher House ALBUM REVIEW
you should do a review of fanfarlo's 'let's go extinct' (:
reeealy disagree
RATKING review!!
I totally agree. After hearing "Little Fang" I figured the album would verge on the more poppy and approachable side similar to Merriweather Post. I think the novelty of "Little Fang" does not represent the album as a whole which is rather unfortunate to the rest of the record.

You really need to give Down There more listens - it's genius.
I came here 8 years later to agree with this comment
Hey Fantano can you do a list for us please? It could be anything, your favourite singers, weirdest albums, top 10 nirvana songs, 10 musicians you wanna bang anything man.
any kind of list at all!??!!??!
i did do this list recently: www.aux.tv/2014/04/needle-drop-proto-punk/
1:30 - 1:39 that was weird
sorry for the weirdness.
1:31 Is there some sort of editing problem going on here? Because you just said the same thing twice
I loved his record!
So fun!
I am very glad that you're no longer rocking the blond hair.
What Fantano doesn't get - Avey Tare is an artist and doesn't care about meeting your expectations of traditional sounding music or something you will like. It's a psychedelic trip. its a matter of preference and anthony knows that

Did you give up on reviewing cloud nothings? I figured you would at least give your thoughts considering you loved their last album
Anthony will get around to it. He just needs some time to Stay Useless.
Feels is the best anco album, thats that. its been confirmed and locked it.

You may not have positive feelings about these three but I was still curious as to what you thought of them:

3. Mobb Deep - The Infamous Mobb Deep
Interested as to what you think about the new Wolfmother Album
I then there was the hat. Is this your new "thing" now?
i've worn this hat before. where you been?
loved it! sorry it didn't do anything for you
Interesting thoughts, I find this LP to be considerably less noisy and densely packed than Centipede Hz. Though they are certainly sonically and aesthetically similar albums.
Anthony, you should do throwback album reviews and review albums that you were not around for, that would be great and I would love to see it happen.
Heavily disagree as usual. How about reviewing Mac Demarco's "Salad Days"? That's a great summer album.
No Cloud Nothings HANE review?
Although I was expecting something closer to Little Fang, what I got was something I could enjoy through a one time listen. it's coming up next.
Super pumped. I'm a little mixed on it myself. Interested to hear your take.
there are the editing mistakes again...
I love this album.
I like the album, but my big problem with it is the lack of harmonies from Deeradorian. She has such a beautiful voice and she is only heard on a couple of tracks quietly in the distance.

I respect your reviews highly and will sit through your reviews with a sense of understanding what you meant, now i dont agree with all your reviews but i still respect them and give you the credibility of why your opinion is well thought out and deserved. it would be awesome if you reviewed "Retro Lakes" L.P.s and singles as We are changing our name now and releasing more material. just a thought! will continue to watch your videos. hopefully could watch a review of one my works someday
what happened to reviewing cloud nothings?
You're a cool dude and your intense love of music is obvious in all your reviews. I've been subscribed to you for years. Anyways, I liked this album but I can understand why you didn't like it as much as I did. If you had to choose between chocolate milk and strawberry milk, which would you choose?
Any chance for a review of the new Protomartyr album? Nice post-punk/noise rock album and the like.
Dillon - The Unknown.. will you review it, dude?
i'll look it up.
Will you review the new Mobb Deep album?
1:30 : ...... 0_0 did i just open a time loop?
I agree completely with what you said. I left a comment on the album stream a week ago and other fans couldn't handle my opinion :/
Love your reviews :) I'm addicted to little fang haha
Todd Terje - It's Album Time
Props for Sonny Rollins!
How about checking out the latest Protomartyr LP and offering your insight???? I think you'll like it.
I see that Saxophone Colossus LP in the background, much respect
eyyy saxaphone colossus haha
Gonna review Sisyphus?
At first listens, a conscious mind will find it as a blaring sound, inaudible and indecipherable, but its really about getting within the sound and reaching that higher plane of subconsciousness which cannot be communicated easily as (e.g. 'little fang') but in fragments (as in 'kid A') I'm talking about the content, the sounds have so many possibilities that it could branch out into many ideas from themselves.
try listening with enhanced senses instead. perhaps then "All will be revealed," son.
Plan on reviewing the new Cormorant album? Its pretty wicked
Anthony, I love your reviews. Keep doing your awesome! - Yes, that's right. Keep doing your awesome.
thanks for your nice words.
I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on the new Todd Terje LP and maybe the new Ratking as well. Lovin the hair by the way, dont listen to the haterss
i feel like you're comparing this release to AC releases, isn't that a bit unfair? that's why he made a side project after all, to stray from what's usual for his musical expression
Review of Downliners sekt new LP "Silent ascent" ! any chances ?
Did you hear the new BBNG? I know it's not out until next month, but wooooooooo boi. It's straight up fire. The second track sounds like TNGHT meets jazz music. These guys just keep getting better and better. Thanks for giving these dudes so much exposure - they definitely deserve it.

The cut looks super fresh with the beanie on!
Heard any good tunes lately, Anthony?
I hate to say it but the end result came off as a "less-good" version of Animal Collective. When I heard Little Fang I expected the whole album to be something different. It's not bad, but it doesn't stand out at all.

I love The Outlaw until he starts screaming that the Outlaw is the future.
