I hate that I laughed at this one
AnCo's best song, fight me
@@WiloPolis03 why would I fight someone who’s right?
@@andyspendlove1019 I remember the second time I listened to that song, I immediately started it over and listened to it again, like two times in a row. I never do that with songs lol, it's just that freaking good
The best band in the world. This is our Beatles.
Good band. Bad analogy. They are closer to the Dead.
@@cactaceous not at all. Each member of AnCo has their own solo career. The way Deakin contributes a few songs to every album is reminiscent of Harrison. The partnership between Avey and Panda is reminiscent of John and Paul respectively.
It’s got nothing to do with genre and sound, it’s got to do with their influence and originality.
@@musicalman1995 Garcia and Weir had solo careers, while the band was going on. So did Hart who came in and out of the band. Garcia wrote and sang his songs. Weir contributed to and sang on every album. Lesh threw in a few here and there just like Deakin. They were a band with a dedicated following that even though the band was never mainstream, accepted and went along with whatever styles they chose to pursue. The Beatles’ influence and originality while achieving and making the mainstream adapt to them is something we will never see. Animal Collective comes nowhere near it.
Best band in the world for beanie wearing wyoming nerds

You know it's a good interview when Panda Bear is answering multiple questions
it was actually a terrible interview though. Fantano has never been good at interviewing people
@nicknickson3650 How so?
you know its a good interview when p&a bear isnt asked any questions about machine gun kelly and travis barker
@@nicknickson3650I think he’s gotten better, he used to talk too much and make it less focused on the artist. He may not be the best but I appreciate the long form interviews

Oh man. Deakin's vulnerability on this interview is admirable.
Sleep Cycle is such a great record. Royal and Desire might be the best song on Time Skiffs. Hopefully Josh realizes he is just as talented and vital to the band as Dave & Noah.
royal and desire is probably animal collective's best song tbh
For YEARS no one would give him his flowers. I'm so glad SC came out and was so acclaimed as it was
Stride Rite is the best song on the new one too.
Preach. All his songs are great
He is brilliant, I love every Deakin song. Sleep cycle blew my mind I can't wait for more.
Josh Dibb breaks my heart. He seems a such a sweet man with no self worth. He is so talented and valued by people like me and doesn’t believe the hype for him and love for him and his craft.
Nah I mean he said himself that the reception to his music was really validating, I think he just struggles with some serious depression
He does seem like an awesome dude tho I agree. Whole band does tbh
Seems like a chill guy. Kinda feel bad for him probably getting bombarded with a lot of memes or w/e from weirder fans
Love Dreakin 🤍
he should've called it "Animal Collective Speaks to Me" and we'd all say "me too, man" and high five a lot

It's so awesome that AnCo is still together making top tier work, what a rarity.
did not expect p&a bear to be so talkative to both mention death grips and say "total fucking bullshit"
Lmao right?? When he was actually speaking up in the middle of Deakin talking I was shocked
Avantchop just checked your channel out and you have the best covers of DG ive seen on youtube. Not to mention your representation of the aesthetic is spot on. I hope you blow up cause folks are sleepin on ur content right now
It’s you the death grips drum cover guy! lol
Noah specifically mentioning Death Grips as being the band he feels they have some sonic connection to is absolutely mind blowing to me.
AnCo was my first love but Death Grips have been the second since I was in high school. I’ve never heard hardly anyone draw a connection between them but I have felt that there is some similarity, some explanation for why both are my absolute favorites by a mile. To hear the first connection drawn be from Noah himself is just unbelievable, I can’t believe he said that.
ive had a similar progression as a lis10er and this took me by surprise too. interestingly, zach hill once did an interview 10+years ago praising anco and saying theyre among his top picks for a collabor8ion. ive also once asked geologist after a show if he was aware of what hill said and if hed ever be open to such a collab

Deakin has been so open and honest in his interviews lately. I hope he realizes how much that helps regular folk. I look up to Deakin so much and hearing he struggles with a lot of the same stuff I do is very endearing to me. Very brave to be so open like that.
Much love to Deakin, Sleep Cycles is my fav AnCo solo release ❤
I make music too and feel the same way a lot of the time, so hearing him talk about it made me feel a little more seen.
For real
Making and releasing music is stressful as hell ngl, like it's almost impossible to know what the reception will be
great to see AnCo releasing quality work even after all these years!
Panda saying Oddsac is his favorite record -- and meaning it with his full heart -- is why I fuck with this band so hard. And I can't get into that record at all lol
I think for a while they were saying that Danse Manatee is their favorite album they've done 💀 I love them
'Fall Be Kind' is peak AnCo for me.
@@chaosmos24 YESSSS that EP is like a top 5 AnCo project imo, it's so damn underrated. Kinda sucks that people don't listen to that one as much just by nature of being an EP
@@WiloPolis03Danse Manatee is unironically really good though. The Songwriting and Drumming on Essplode and In the Singing Box are some of their best IMO

Honestly never would've expected Fantano to do an AnCo interview, was so excited to see this
Really? You never would’ve expected it???? Anthony fantano????? And animal collective?????????????????????
Yeah that's what I said 🤨
@@cartnitereturnsyou have to remember a lot of fantano fans are younger and have only become fans in the last 5 years
@@IFeelSoTongueTied yeah Anthony was a big fan of MPP and Fall Be Kind when those came out, and he’s said he loves the whole run from Sung Tongs to Strawberry Jam too.
@@IFeelSoTongueTied No I know that Anthony is a big AnCo fan, I've seen all of his reviews of animal collective albums. They just don't seem like the kind of artist to do a Fantano interview, especially considering PB has said he kinda only does interviews so that he can support his music
Animal Collective is by far my fav psych rock/alt band. Legends.
Take a drink every time Fantano says the word Pitchfork.
It's one of their best records to me, but I also think all their music is awesome. I liked time skiffs a whole lot but this one really really connected with me. I enjoy not having expectations when I listen to them
Fantanos first few questions revolved around critics thoughts on their releases and monetization of their music...as if their most popular song wasn't clear about their thoughts on both. I feel like Panda seemed annoyed by the implications of some of these questions.
i feel they both did. like i appreciate anthony a lot but he seems so fixed in his own little world, and a lot of the questions are so leading like he just asks them if they agree with his knterpretation. the artists have other stuff to say ghat would be more interesting to get out of them
Panda does have iconic RBF tho, never really know what he's gonna say or what he's thinking. He's delightfully unpredictable. My fave is him saying he doesnt technically listen to records or anything and just 'uses youtube' for listening to music. Dude is really the ultimate Baltimorian minecraft kid but like, 2 generations before.
I only say that because I know so many kids growing up MD/Baltimore life that had his trajectory, quiet gamer to musician in some respect lol
personally i feel like both of you are cherry picking the questions to get upset about because they're spending a lot of time talking about the music making process that has nothing to do with reception or any of the stuff you're pointing out@@simonstrash
Legendary band. You get them, or you don't. And that's perfectly OK. AnCo loves to push the boundaries and they've had the opportunity to be boring and they didn't. So special. Thanks Tony, Noah, and Josh for this great, insightful dive in. Blessings 🙌
Really appreciate Josh's honesty in this interview
Man, I love hearing Josh talk about anything, just such a sincere and passionate dude, and a total genius and slept-on musician. It's so funny to see him play a bit of peacekeeper here, This really reminds me of the infamous 'van' interview with Josh Noah and Dave many years ago, that's one of my favorites tbth.
It shows all their personalities so well. Dave has a lot to say about the Musicality, Noah wants to take a nap/is searching for something that interests him in the questions, but keeps it respectful as he can (read in many an interview about his anxiery issues, I had the same stuff growing up) Josh gets really in the grit about the tech and recording of their work. That interview's great cuz they were all so young, but so aware of stuff that was happening and so experienced too.
I think in that original interview when Josh came along he was ALL about recording everything and making sure they had like, a catalog of sounds and stuff over the years, and it really helped streamline their music making process.. So its total gold that he probs felt 'bad' about struggling to finish his work. It's hard to be 'good' at something for other people and not for your own stuff. So that was just.. an awesome nugget of info.
I remember the 'fallout' over Sleep Cycles' development, I fully understand his lack of confidence with it and the stress!! One of the early 'kickstarter turbulent' things I can remember in general, people thought he 'scammed' them because it took so long for the album to drop, sucks ass. I remember in indie circles he was talked about foul for SO LONG (I never understood it, but def didn't 'get' his work till SC came out, its integral to 'understanding' the Deak).
I think its incredible that just ONE solo release put all of that to bed. And its awesome the rest of the band was so supportive and activley helping him push it thru. F yeah. Good friends
LOVE these guys to death, thanks for the interview. Wanted to really hear from Brian and Dave as well, but if you've been a fan you know an interview with al 4 can be super elusive heh.
Deakin, Sleep Cycle is a top 3 anco related release for me. You made a masterpiece
It’s an incredible project.
Panda Bear always has some sagely NBA analogy lol
Kurtis Blow
Fantano needs to stop answering his own questions every time, man really loves the sound of his own voice way to much to be an interviewer
so looking forward to deakin's new record, hope he takes all the time that he needs
Car Keys has been my favorite song they've made in a while. Can't wait to listen to the new stuff.

Great interview Melon! You responded well to the flow of the conversations, adjusting when to wait and when to interject. Was not expecting this collab but the world is a better place now that it exists
We appreciate your dedication and hard work. Keep working hard.
thank you for doing this interview! lots of great insights
loved to see this conversation!

Every Deakin-centric AnCo song so far has been a freaking banger, dude is 3 for 3
Noah looks like he's gonna be filming tiktoks in that room lol
Bro stopped aging at age 14 I swear 💀💀
Saw them in Des Moines Iowa this year and they were so good. You could tell they are very experienced performers
Awesome to see this interview! Defeat is one of my favorite songs you've ever done, as someone who's been listening for 15 years - it's an amazing experience on its own. Most of the rest of the album is superb as well, especially Genies Open, though there are times it gets a little whimsical or goofy on songs like Gem & I and All The Clubs which I think dampens the experience for me. I also found the outro to be a bit long winded at first, but it's grown on me with time. Overall I love the direction of the band right now, and I'm continuing to really enjoy this album. Keep it up!
Can't believe I missed this interview!! Thanks so much for this!
Deakin is so cool he seems like such a sweet and honest guy
Really love what I've heard of the new album.
Defeat is beautiful. Makes me weep.
Best band of all time
I'm part of your hardcore fanbase and I will tell you the new record is also one of my favorite things you've done. An incredible piece of art.
What an amazing interview, I wish every future interview is more of AnCo members taking the reigns and sharing details of how the band works and approaches music.

@@parsnipappendectomy he said he would drop everything to tour with them, if I remember right.
So new Deakin and new Panda Bear on the horizon. Hell yee. Cool interview btw!
Yeah dude, AC is just a band man. A really fucking good band. In fact, the best band…because they’re my favorite band. And it’s okay if you don’t feel the same.
If you quickly scroll the cursor over the timeline of the video it looks like Noah is having a party
Im surprised this interview wasnt just a loud beeping sound for an hour
(PS I love AC)
Dope as hell for this one
I struggle with depression and anxiety and it was really nice to have that reminder that doing nothing is the best way to stay stuck in it. I know it, but that external reminder and validation of what I know really hit me. So did the advice to learn to trust yourself.
I love this band. I've loved them since an ex-girlfriend introduced me to them and we went to a showing of Oddsac on our third date. They resonate with something in me that no other band or music do.
Only in an AnCo interview could Death Grips be brought up by someone who isn't Fantano himself
Confirmed: Noah watches the needle drop

its been about 1 day since i first watched and it still bugs me that fantano just lets out a big ugly laugh when p&a earnestly gives righteous praise for oddsac
I feel like Anthony might’ve been taken aback by how these guys took the reins of the conversation, and he was just relegated to making interjections. Great interview nevertheless, really awesome to see these guys open up. New album is so refreshingly AWESOME
to be fair some of his questions are so eye rollingly bad, "how do you feel about being more popular 10 years ago" "who do you think you influenced" "do you guys like when people gatekeep your music or no"
@@westerlied took the words out of my mouth. many questions felt like he had an opinion about their music to get across, and then forced it into a yes/no question with an obvious answer.

Glad to hear that Centipede Hz is getting better wider reception.
I think it only caught hell because AnCo doesn't operate like most bands and have a linear progression like Radiohead, for example.
MPP was probably their most accessible album and significantly widened their audience. Then they did what they do best and followed it up with an album that has an entirely different aesthetic. Definitely threw a lot of people for a loop. It’s a shame because Centipede Hz is a phenomenal record.
“Centipede Hz” was part of their classic run, as far as I’m concerned. I got into them through “Merriweather”, but quickly fell in love with their entire discography, including “Ark”.
When “Centipede Hz” dropped, I fell in love with it on the first listen. Geologist was listening to a lot of 60’s psychedelic rock in preparation for the album, most of which I was already familiar with.
So I fully understood why he went for a maximalist production approach. He was in that “Interstellar Overdrive” headspace.
Quite frankly, it was exactly the kind of music I always dreamed of making myself.
MGMT were on the same wavelength when they made their self-titled album.
A shame they got so much flack for it, because I would have loved to see a trend of more artists coming out with maximalist albums like that.
The indie scene is a joke now. It’s overrun by poptimists, and hipsters trying to change the definition of psychedelic music to some New Age chillout vibe.
thank you anco, fantano, not a terrible interview 👍

great job, anthony :)
Got the 500th like 👍 great interview, much love to all the boys.
To me (I reiterate, to me) Animal Collective is my Beach Boys. I find them musically similar to what the experience may have been like decades ago. The medium and delivery channels are vastly different now, and the discerning listeners are the actual vectors through which these sounds reach a mass audience. Deakin nails it in his explanation. The difference is that the Beach Boys could ride the wave of a limited technical bandwidth of the delivery mechanism, whereas today the talent and noise both travel on an equal delivery medium. If you're reading this, you likely get what I am saying.
Centipede Hz has some of AnCo’s best-written songs on it.
Yeah but the noisy production kinda butchers it imo
@@WiloPolis03 I think that was a huge turn off for many, yes.
@@WiloPolis03The noisy production makes the album. It really bridges their first 3 albums together with their modern era. They’re a psychedelic rock band that hasn’t forgotten its roots. The production will make it a mainstay for many years to come.
@@psychedelicpiper999 It's not really my thing for most of it, but I get the appeal
I look forward to the day where everyone can move past the post-MPP hype and re-evaluate Centipede Hz as a great album that deserved way more than its lukewarm-at-best reputation suggests. Such a fun, messy, exciting record.
This but all of their records. Tangerine Reef has grown on me too
Isn't it Now is excellent. For me, better than Time Skiffs by quite a long way.
