This idea could be far more interesting. It sounds like a lot composition excercises, some of them are really good, but doesn't sound like one integrated piece.
To me it s as insane as the Malaysian cook selling stirred fried pebbles from his stall in the street and making a pile out of it 🤷♂️🤣🙄 Snobbery at its best!
Heres the thing, Im all for sonic landscapes. Give me some penderecki or ligeti anyday and ill usually be down. However, the sheer simplicity and lack of substance here is staggering. so much of the actual sound produced are just annoying whines and yelps by the poor woodwinds. You have the uninspired 1 note peddle drones that persist to be uninteresting, neither creating suspense or atmosphere. The only interesting sections are when the traditional sounding oriental melodies come in, but those are sadly so sparcely orchestrated that they end up just fading into the rest of the mediocrity. Im no composer, and i have to give credit where its due. You got your thoughts down on paper, congrats. Youre doing better than me. However, i say with all honesty, the fads and quirks of this concerto wont ever be enough to sustain its memory. Its just a very sad peice of music, and not in a good way.
Maybe you can't hear the substance that's there because you don't have any reference for all the Chinese musical traditions he's drawing on. Like the Beijing opera styles around 11'-12', or the percussion ensemble styles throughout. Perhaps if you tried starting with some of the less "gimmicky" seeming Tan Dun works, you'd be able to appreciate more of this - I think "Ghost Opera" is a pretty good intro to his compositional style, especially if you can find the video of Kronos playing it.
tan dun is truly a genius and a master of color
The meeting of reality, art and talent. And a miracle is born.

I don’t like it
It's really unfortunate that someone wasted their time writing this
It's really unfortunate that you wasted your time writing this unhelpful comment
…and worse, those paying for and wasting their time attending.
Poor of you wasting your time listening to something you don't like just to write are nonsense comment.
