"Performs" is the perfect word! I'm assuming that by now you've discovered he does exactly that beautifully with every journey he takes us on no matter the musical style he chooses. Dan Vasc is absolutely amazing!

It’s pronounced Geth SEH mah nee. In the New Testament, the night before his arrest and crucifixion, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. He famously asked God to “take this cup from me” but submitted to God’s will, and according to Luke’s Gospel, sweat poured from him like great drops of blood, and an angel came to strengthen him. Traditionally, this is the point where he took upon himself the sins of all humanity before he died for our sins.
My mom loved this rock opera, so I grew up listening to different versions of the musical, different actor/singers trying to do this one, with varying degrees of success. This is such a difficult song, and this is one of the best renditions I’ve seen-I might put it second only the one by Ian Gillian, since that’s the one I hear in my head when I think of the song. Dan has such a powerful voice and an amazing range, though-and he’s an incredible actor. This is an incredibly powerful version. I also really loved John Legend’s version, but what really sold me on that one was John’s acting-he focused on Jesus’s love for his people, even Judas, at the end.
This is one of the parts where traditional Christians sometimes quarrel with the musical, and some call it blasphemous. I’m a Christian and don’t see it that way, but I get the issue-this paints Jesus solely as a man, and not just that but a man who is not entirely confident in God. Naturally Christians who believe that Jesus is God incarnate are going to have problems with that. Me, I don’t pretend to understand the nature of the trinity, so I’m not going to argue as if I am an expert. Anyway, that’s probably more than you wanted to know.

His rendition of this just floors me. Jesus Christ Superstar is an incredible piece of work and Dan Vasc nails the agony in the garden; (pronounced like Guess-sem-en-y). Some would argue with the Biblical accuracy of this song but it shows the agony Jesus the man must have felt contemplating what was next.
There was a video from a medical viewpoint that said the sweating of blood is caused by a serious amount of stress.
I'm willing to agree this could have been a conversation (prayer) he had with God knowing what was going to happen.
The argument is that because he was also divine, Jesus wouldn't feel any agony in the contemplation of being martyred. I don't really agree with that, partially because even if he was part divine, he was still part man, and man fears pain and death even if it's in good cause. There's also the fact the Bible jumps from when he's a kid to when he's 30, so those missing years are probably when he was coming to terms with his fate, when he had doubts and questions. But, I'm not Christian, so it's purely speculation for me. I just think it's far more impactful to think he was afraid but did what he believed was right, to save others. It seems like far less of a sacrifice if he had no fear, in my eyes anyway.

I am Catholic and I lost my husband. When I listened to this for the first time, I couldn't stand the shock and I immediately stopped because it spoke to me so much. I listened to Dan Vasc perform this song as if he took it into himself and I went all the way to the end. Since then, I listen to it three to 4 times a week. This hurts me. It's hell and the other side of the coin for me and the complaints, fears, thoughts that Jesus must have thought!!!! Dan transcended this song. When he is really touched, he cries and it's done. Or maybe Jesus is yelling that for us. Let's take advantage of the chance he gave us even if in the song, he speaks to his father, nothing is lost, everything is transformed. His voice screams doubt and what a voice. It's a miracle. For me, he and Dimash, having both done opera, are in different categories the greatest singers in the world standing on one hand. It's a rock opera like Starmania, I think! This is how I classify it. Since then I have been researching to find out how these two singers use their vocal cords and not only that... In short, the whole journey to becoming invincible in vocal performances. I was honored to see the magnificent play Jesus Christ Superstar (yes, I'm old) and this talented beyond words young man portrayed this part absolutely brilliantly, wow, just wow!
This is definitely one of the best performances of this song. Its from the Broadway Musical, "Jesus Christ Superstar" which was excellent. But Dan has a way of pouring every ounce of his being into his singing. He shouldn't be labeled a "metal singer" because he definitely is a world class vocalist, performer and could be on any Broadway stage. Love him and all he does, the different choices of music genre's, he nails them all. ❤

Its my favorite song....pronounced GETH sem ah Knee. Many versions, many covers. This one has the correct level of passion, which is appropriate since it is the passion play. Ian Gillan of Deep Purple did the first performance of this on the studio album of the rock opera. But Vasc is really good, especially on that high note!

Love this musical so much, hands down my favourite song from it. I love the movie version from the 70s, i used to watch it on vhs lol.
You need to check out Jesus Christ Superstar Live Arena Tour from 2012. There are clips on youtube for it. I watched one clip & immediately went to iTunes & bought it. I’ve watched it at least 10 times. I love the 70’s movie version but this 2012 version takes it to a whole new level.

Jesus Christ Superstar is one of my all time favourite musicals and I've seen it multiple times and Dan's performance of this song is second only to the original version sung by Ian Gillian. He really put his entire being into it and it truly shows in both his singing and his acting. He's not just singing it, he's performing it.

Yes, the character he's playing is Jesus. He is talking to God in this scene. He doesn't want to die, but in the end he accepts God's will.

Hey Anthony!, Jesus Christ Superstar is a musical made in 1973. It is a classic musical that many including my family celebrate Easter with every year watching it on Easter Day. Check it out although it was made in 1973 it still takes place in our modern day world. Thanks for all your great reactions bro!

I agree the closest to Ted Neely's performance I've ever found and and so reminiscent of him back in the seventies and eighties. I've had the pleasure of watching Ted perform this over 50 years on various tours. He will always be the only one who truly is 'it' for me, but Dan is right there with him for singing Gethsemane!!

Yes you’re absolutely right. Jesus Christ Superstar is a Stage Show and was originally written by Andrew Lloyd Webber (I believe). I believe Dan Vasc could easily be the lead performer but he had a bad experience with Music Executives which sent him down the You Tube Route.
Jesus Christ Superstar was a great show with fantastic music. The title song is really great.

The first part is The First Holy Communion, the second part is The Confirmation, that's when you take your Saint Protector's name. My eldest and youngest brothers both did all of that, as they were both alterboys... the olds dragged us up "cattletick", much to my chagrin, but I got out as soon as I was able... not...for...me...baby...

It is filled with amazing music just like most of his music.
I think you may enjoy Too Much Heaven On Their Mind from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar though keep in mind the beginning music does represent what was popular in 1973 so well a little painfully outdated. Once the singing actually starts the song becomes amazing.
This song from the movie would also be good for you to see so you have an idea just how amazing Dan Vasc did with his version. I can honestly say I don't know which I like more and I didn't think I would find any version close to the movie adaptation version.
It is from a Broadway Play. Gethsamane is the garden/forest he spent is last hours before Judas betrayed and brought the soldiers to take him to trial.

This was a HUGE rock opera in the 70s. The music and singing is outstanding. There was actually a remake on tv a couple years ago with John Legend. It was pretty good, but not as you’d as the play and movie.
