- Anna plays a slow air that is a favourite of many Nova Scotia fiddlers
www.annaludlow.com
Anna is playing my William Godley fiddle, made in Lunenburg in 1910. Curiously, Godley is buried about 100 yards from where this recording was made, in Lunenburg.
Crazy how playing the fiddle a little slower makes it sound much faster. Now, hang with me here, it's about to get deep. I think when you play a fiddle faster, it's like a person, and it can forget all about its troubles so it sounds happy. Then when you decide to play a fiddle more slowly you force it to reflect on its existence and it takes on a more somber sound. My favorite instrument of all time!
I refer to it as crying...the fiddle or violin is crying...
Anna, you play the air beautifully but I would prefer it a wee bit slower.
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.
@@kylemc7843 I could see that because slow phrases require continuous slur, and the fasts force me to be relaxed for fast thinking & finger positions. Uuuugh..... fiddle tunes... I can understand their techniques but I cannot do that so easily :(
It's funny that you should say that. For me practicing the violin everyday is the only thing that helps me forget everything else in my life and keeps me sane. But it is not the speed of playing or practicing. It is the complete concentration and attention. To be
Great song. Lovely playing, Anna. I belive the song is called "Niel Gow's Lament for His Second Wife." My source indicates that they lived together for 30 years, that she died 2 years before him, and left no issue.
The tune is called Niel Gow's Lament For His Second Wife
You have a kindly and sweet touch on the violin that gives you a distinct sound and feel.
As the wonderful bass player Michel Donato once said, "There are three things in music: time, time and time."
Wonderful .. excekkent playing .. brought tears to my eyes for all the burdens old folks went through. God bless you. Awesome piece.
Something about the way folk violinists use double stopping and how they bend the note just gets me every time!
She 'bends' notes and uses plenty of grace notes, two trademarks of folk fiddlers, very effectively. But there are no double stops - that is, two notes on different strings played simultaneously - here. But you may have been commenting on her playing more generally.
I found this violin at a Lunenburg auction. Godley made a lot of violins, but this one is particularly nice and was never played much- it's like a hundred year old new fiddle. All birdseye maple and made in 1910, when he was at his peak. Unlike a lot of Lunenburg fiddles, the varnish on this one is perfect because it doesn't get soft in the heat & humidity. Other Godleys and other local fiddles tend to stick to the felt case liner, ruining the varnish.

You are such an inspiration. 15 years ago you played this. I wonder how much you have improved (if that is even possible) after this video was made?
An Air rather than a ‘slow air’, very nice playing indeed. ❤
you resemble a young Lena Heady - beautiful to watch you play so soulfully. Thank you.
Hi Zeevgut I don't know the name of this tune, but it's played all over Cape Breton- someone else might know. The violin was made in Lunenburg, NS by William Godley. He made hundreds of violins between 1880-ish and 1920. This 1910 fiddle is a beautiful example of his best work. After 100 years, it's mellow and responsive but can also make your ears ring. Better still, it's always been well cared for, so it's in perfect original condition!
arcadiapictures this lament by neil?
It's Niel Gow's Lament for his Second Wife
Beautiful
Woa...gorgeous sounds ..thumbs up to you!
"Neil Gow's Lament for his Second Wife" I believe is what the song is called. A Scottish tune.
David Barna yes
'Niel' rather than 'Neil'...I know, it looks wrong, but that is the correct spelling.
I was looking on UA-cam for exactly music like this. Slow southern 🎻 music. This is so beautiful !! Do you have more music like this ?
VERY BEAUTIFUL.
Out standing!
this video are fantastic!
thank you.
Veramente fantastica
Sounds great. Nice tune, nice execution. I put a thumbtack, taped point-out on the underside of the neck to remind me to keep my wrist straight. Took a few weeks, but now I can play a lot longer without getting sore tendons. She plays very well, though.
Get me through December- Alison Krause

Excellent playing whats the name of the tune e I have never heard it before
lovely tune, tone and execution........preferable to most classical violin
Nicely played 😃
Great playing! Waht is the name of this piece? BTW could you give me some information about your violin?
it's "Neil Gow's lament for the death of his second wife".. beautiful!
...but it's a lament and therefore played too fast here.
ime on love................
where can i find more musics like this? I would like to listen to them when I'm writing my script.
Nice!
That's HIlarious!
That's a lovely sounding violin, may I ask where you obtained it?
No sacrifice to great, duty first!
Ashley Graham playing the fiddle.
nice
How ironic is it that this is the type of music in Legends of the Fall, and her last name is Ludlow? The same as Tristan's!
Someone PLEASE tell what this slow sad 1800s style fiddle or violin music is called.. like slow civil war music.. what is this music called??
Rob Chesley this song is called niel gows lament for the death of his second wife its Scottish niel gows was famous in his day great writer
+Rob Chesley It'll either be an Irish, Scottish, or Appalachian slow air. In this case, it's Scottish. The "slow air" part is what's important if you want to look up more stuff like this. Just look up "Scottish/Irish/Appalachian (whichever one of those three you want to try) slow airs" on Google, get a list of tune names, and look up a whole slew of them on UA-cam or iTunes. Mark O'Connor and Jay Ungar have some great stuff for Appalachian/Bluegrass fiddle and John Turner (not sure if he'll be on iTunes or UA-cam, but I had the privilege of studying Scottish fiddle under him and he's FANTASTIC) is one of the best Scottish fiddlers out there. Hope that helps. :)
The wrist... It hurts me
I have the same wrist problem. To play straight is incredibly uncomfortable.
Don't watch....listen!
What is the tunes name?
This reminds of a crazy person
I think Anna has to be the most attractive woman I have ever seen.
Well I guess compared to a jig the tune is slower but seemed a bit rushed to me. There are some very nice double stops when properly placed enhances the tune. Lastly, that left hand posture needs some work. Other than that you're a lovely girl with a lovely violin and a lovely tune!! Lovely!!
Soulds nice but lord please work on your wrist its terribly bad for you over time
Beautiful
