- Filmed in one take, I play in 30 different fiddle styles!
Released on World Fiddle Day 2021! Hope you Enjoy.
Please forgive the occasionally glitchy video (final cut pro on my computer does that for whatever reason and it's impossible to get rid of) and some sloppy playing in the transitions between styles especially- it was all filmed in one take and because of the various tempos I had no click track and had to jump in as best I could to each style!
Here are the 30 styles listed in order of play:
Scottish, Irish, French Canadian, Canadian Old-time, American Old-time, Métis, Cape-breton, Texas style, Bluegrass, Western Swing, English, Gypsy Jazz, Cajun, Country, Swedish, Klezmer, Prairie Canadian Old-time (Calvin Vollrath), West Coast, Contemporary, Ukrainian, New England, Breton, Blues, Shetland, Mariachi, Jazz, Maritimes, Choro, Folk (fiddle backup), Czech.
Here are the tunes I used for each style:
Scottish- Highlander's Farewell to Ireland (trad)
Irish- Killarney Boys of Pleasure (trad)
French Canadian- Son of a Bear (Louis Beaudoin?)
Canadian Old-time - Don Messor's Breakdown (Don Messor)
American Old-time- Angeline the Baker (trad)
Métis - Red River Jig (trad)
Cape-breton - Miller of Drone (James Scott Skinner)
Texas style- Tom and Jerry (trad)
Bluegrass- Wheel Hoss (Bill Monroe)
Western Swing- Faded Love (Bob, John, and Billy Jack Wills)
English - In the Fields in Frost and Snow (trad)
Gypsy Jazz- Lady Be Good (George and Ira Gershwin)
Cajun- Cajun Fiddle (Don Rich, Buck Owens)
Country - Devil Went Down to Georgia (Charlie Daniels Band)
Swedish- Flippen (Vasen)
Klezmer- Hopak Katsatske (trad)
Prairie Canadian Old-time - Marg Cote Reel (Calvin Vollrath)
West Coast- Flowers (Oliver Schroer)
Contemporary- June Tune (Trent Freeman)
Ukrainian- Arkan (trad)
New England- Moneymusk (trad)
Breton- Danse Andro (trad)
Blues- [Generic 12-bar blues in G]
Shetland- Spootiskerry (trad)
Mariachi- Jesusita En Chihuahua
Jazz- Misty (Erroll Garner)
Maritimes- L'Acadienne (trad)
Choro- Tico-Tico no fuba (Zequinha de Abreu)
Folk fiddle backup (Standard folk song chord progression with fiddle improvisation- I wanted to represent how the main role of many fiddlers is accompanying singers/singer-songwriters, rather than simply playing instrumental tunes).
Czech- Beer Barrel Polka (Jaromir Vejvoda)
Part 3 released for World Fiddle Day 2023: ua-cam.com/video/kERbUawjiig/v-deo.html
I’m an American banjo player and aspiring fiddler, and it really warmed my heart to hear Angeline the Baker. That was one of the first fiddle tunes I ever learned. Incredible playing, I aspire to play as well as you someday!
Dude this is amazing! You just fiddled for 20 minutes straight and didn’t miss a beat. I love it. Definitely sharing!
I think my fave is Bluegrass.
In cape Breton the sets are 45 minutes. sometimes they change the pianist.
What a tour de force! 30 is more than enough, but I'll throw in Argentine tango, Danish, and Norwegian Hardanger fiddle!
Love me some Danish fiddle
The versatility and possiblies of this instrument are endless..
Could throw in Paganini's 3rd? The one with the fingered octaves... Technically fiddle music... Just stupid hard fiddle music.
Then you also have the Finnish tango!
@@strings1984 you wanna hear paganinis caprice #26 for guitar. with Li Jie you will drop your jaw!
I am loving all the Canadian sub groups here. As a traveling Canadian folk musician I really enjoyed this.
Was wondering if the player is perhaps from Atlantic Canada, or have those styles really gained so much attention? Seemed to somewhat dominate the video (which I'm not complaining about 😉 ).
@@aarphi1984 According to his bio, he's from British Columbia and specialises in Canadian fiddle styles
I am so happy that you have labeled each tune and have the style written for each section of the video! I know many of these tunes, but would have been lost otherwise. You are a fiddler’s fiddler!❤️❤️🎻🎶
As a Swede I'm honoured to be represented in this list 💙💛💙

matur suksma
Really appreciated the stoic facial expressions that never interfered with the changes of styles.
🦊Watson
Absolutely amazing, ty for adding the timestamps too- you are just incredible!
Damn... I've been playing violin for almost 9 years. And idk why I've never heard such violin music before. I badly want to learn how to use my violin the same way. Gone to search for tutorials
Real talent. Unbelievable to be able to play so many styles - GENIUS
Such a cool video! As a beginner on the fiddle it's inspirational to see so many different styles displayed so well. I hope I can get as good as you some day! Thanks for sharing 👍
Stunning. What a terrific presentation! This took a LOT of work to put together. Thank you for sharing your talents.
This is seriously so impressive! Feel like I learned more about fiddling from this video than I have in about 15 years of playing.
Watching and taking in your control of your right arm and hand in conjunction with the control of the bow with such varied techniques is truly a wonderful thing to watch. All the hard work you put in over the years has really paid off for yourself and your fans… of which I am a big fan.
Thanks so much Michael!!
The Swedish fiddle may have been similar to what my papaw heard as a boy when him and his brother would sit on the railroad tracks and listen to a Swedish man play his fiddle on his porch. The man was an engineer for the local mining company I think.
Choro on fiddle? Uau never been so proud of being Brazilian!! 🎻
This is amazing!!! You played for almost 19 minutes without missing a beat! It's amazing to hear all of the different styles of fiddle music. I've been learning how to play the violin and I'm trying out fiddling and this is a great way for me to pinpoint which style I would really like to try playing! Again, great job!!
I’m Cajun French and live in Lafayette Louisiana, you did the damn thing 👏🏼
German and Norwegian should have been here too, especially considering norway has their own fiddle - Hardanger fiddle
Both styles are in part 2 of this series! ua-cam.com/video/0c97JWGPBp4/v-deo.html
Isn't that one labeled "Klezmar" a Ukrainian tune? Klezmar I thought had a different sound.
Ok now the Ukrainian one plays and it sounds like Klezmar. Did you get those mixed up?
Blows me away how many different styles there are and even more so how you can separate them all like that.
Abso F-ing-lutely Brilliant Mate! You know, if you had a Book with all the Bowings, and a Play along, It would totally replace all that horrible Kreutzer & Tartini that young Violinists are forced to go through to learn Bowing. Might even make a dent in O'Connor's "American School", totally overpriced and not even remotely connected with how He Learned to Play. Total Admiration Michael!
Thank you so much! Here my faves:
1) Irish
2) Cajun
3) Swedish
4) Breton
5) West Coast
6) Ukrainian
7) Maritimes
Just...Outstanding! What a great, great talent!
Beautiful. Missed Hungarian, though, I think. But its easy to find. The many rare styles, however were very very interesting. Thank you.
Great video! But you missed Romanian
Romanian made the sequel video! ua-cam.com/video/0c97JWGPBp4/v-deo.html
Cajun goes harder than I thought it would 🔥
This is great! I really appreciate how you added and faded the titles - informative yet lovely. Not to mention the music!
Loooooove the first one. I had UA-cam playing random videos while I washed dishes and this one came on. I was very confused as to what kind of performance I was listening to, what style… then I figured it must be the sample video of 30 different styles. Amazing work to do all these.
Love this! We were watching and heard "Faded Love" and Ellie immediately paused and picked up her fiddle so she could play the tune. Happy World Fiddle Day!
Brilliant! Love it when I have fun and learn something - not unlike my music lessons with Michael!
Sounds amazing! i never know that fiddle have so many style, and each style have so unique color! thanks!
This is AMAZING 🤩🎶🎻 I’d love to have you come teach a masterclass to my studio!! If you’d be interested…if not, totally understand! You play so beautifully!!🤩🌷🎶🎻
Thanks! Sure, i'd be happy to, please email me at michaelburnyeat@gmail.com with more info and we'll see if we can set something up!
This is a great fiddle performance!
I would like to know the history of your musical experience.
FOUL! I didn’t get an Eh? At the end of the Canadian styles! 😁
I wonder how long it took to practice all these to perfection
hey whats that fast stutter-like bowing technique called that you do a bunch in son of a bear? 1:29, 1:42, 1:51. really cool id love to learn it
it's called a cut! check out Hanneke Cassel's tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/sDYiiMVLNFQ/v-deo.html
All I can say is Dayuum! An entire planet's musical samples in 19 minutes! Well done!
You’re great; this is great. To me, your klezmer sounded less “klezmeresque” than the Ukrainian. I write that as someone from the tribe. I love your offerings.
That was my impression, also.
Plus thought it was weird that the Ukrainian didn't sound at all like the Chezk.
I must say that I found "Cape-Breton" more simular to the type of fiddle style that I've heard here in Sweden than the actuall "Swedish" example but well done either way! Im by no means an expert just love the sound of a fiddle! Great work!
Masterful. That was amazing and all in one sitting!
I took a break from practicing and sat down to listen to it all.
I’ve never thought of “New England” as a specific style, but as soon as I heard it I loved it and thought of videos and bands I’ve seen from Nee England.
thanks Kaylee! Yes, there are many more fiddle styles than I first knew about when I started researching for this video!
I had no intention of watching the whole thing. Now I’m running very late! Thanks!
"Please forgive the occasionally glitchy video ......"
I think the last thing you need is forgiveness!! That was absolutely brilliant!!!! Thank you.
The key to the Metis fiddle is to tune AEAE and play the high notes on the low strings and low notes on the high. Most important thing though is to play it by beat instead of by bar, and it comes out so crooked it sounds like you forgot half of it and improvised.
Source; Metis fiddler. It's chaos sometimes.
You are a very talented individual!
You didn't miss a beat! Congratulations, c'est très bon! 😊
Gilles Dufour
Great fiddling! You showed great versatility in 30 styles. I can't imagine making all those transitions instantaneously. Blessings!
Nice job, Michael! I send kudos not only to you but also to your obviously similarly multifaceted accompanist!
Your Irish tune is not "Farewell to Ireland," it's "The Killarney Boys of Pleasure." Great playing!
Sooo gooooood could you do a full tutorial on arkan and an dro pleeeassee??
You played all the major ones, but what about the minor ones? Can you do a video on natural minor, harmonic minor, melodic minor, 2 minor, 6 minor, and relative minor styles?
Sorry, when I saw it was called Major styles I just had to make a minor theory joke lol 😂, just a wee minor joke not a huge major one. Okay sorry this joke is getting out of hand haha I’ll make a minor adjustment and go back to my major intervals. I’ll stop now haha
Your a man with crazy mad skills.. I loved this. I'm a Michael Cleveland fan, you've made the crosscut of styles quite eloquently.
The last tune style would be heard across most of Central Europe. Cheers
Absolutely amazing, you brought me so much joy
Interesting. The English fiddle style is more classical in nature, while others feel a lot more carefree and bright.
Brilliant, we’ll done👌glad to see Shetland fiddle recognised as a major style😎
dude. The bluegrass ending at 5:02 is the nastiest thing ive heard on a violin.
I'm gonna steal it 😂
This inspired me to learn the fiddle (particularly Canadian east coast)
You should have put some Welsh fiddle music in there. i'm an Irish fiddle player by trade but i love the Welsh fiddle.
I’m with you, Harry. I wanted to hear Welsh style too. Can you say anything about what is unique to the Welsh style?
@@UkuleleSioni Welsh fiddle has a very unique Celtic style that has almost a classical theme to it. While Irish fiddle has more ornamentation with bowed triplets, double stops and roles. Welsh fiddle has a much softer and melodic rhythm to it. This Video should explain it in more detail. ua-cam.com/video/xoRdSkJLAfw/v-deo.html
Awesome! Really cool how you showed all these different styles. My favourite will always be american old-time.
What are your favorite strings at the moment
I like Pirastro generally, but mix and mash a bit.
"Irish" as one style?
Ah, disregard, I found the part 3.
how do you learn this because i am trying and resources are difficult to find
Amazing ! I have just listened to this for the third time this evening! Love your playing and choices of pieces! Sharing your videos and Facebook page!
Chapeau ! Très belle performance
Well done. That was truly impressive
So so good! Gotta ask, which is your favorite to play and listen to? I’m in bluegrass country but I appreciate the sounds of the world
Thanks! I play and listen to mostly irish, scottish, canadian, and american styles, but enjoy most genres!
Super Cool! Thanks for this wicked fun and informative offering!
That was so fantastic!
I really am speechless!!
You are such a talent…
Absolutely incredible playing Sir 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Awesome fiddle playing, I'd be thrilled just to be able to play 1 style as good as you. Very talented, great video.
Love living in NB and being surrounded by so many great styles!
Amazing video, thank you so much :)
Mr. Burnyeat,
This performance is amazing. If I could do this by my old age, I would Burn my fiddle and Yeet it out the window.
My view:
1-5 styles: Beginner
6-9 styles: Early intermediate, get on a stage for fun.
10-15 styles: Intermediate
16-20 styles: Advanced, get on a stage for pay.
21-24 styles: Please teach people for pay.
25-29 styles: Majored in fiddle performance at Belmont, ETSU, or other.
30+ styles: God level; win a golden fiddle at the crossroads.
One comment: The “Blues- [Generic 12-bar blues in G]” is more precisely a Boogie-Woogie, which is a subset genre of Blues, per Wikipedia and others. The passage performed is generally the left-hand piano or the double bass line, using the I IV V I progression.
I love you played the Ukrainian style 🇺🇦 💙
Check out Part 2 just released for World Fiddle Day 2022: ua-cam.com/video/0c97JWGPBp4/v-deo.html
Wow!!!!!!!
That was incredible. I want to listen to it over and over! Thank you so much!
your fiddle has great tone and you did a great job mic'ing and capturing the tone. Who is the fiddle maker and what mic is that?
it's a Roth violin and Km 184 mic
@@MICHAELBURNYEAT i love Roth violins. almost bought one last year made in the 1920s. i hesitated and someone else got it.
So much talent with all these styles 🎉😯
Faves were: Western swing, Country, Ukrainian, Breton, English, well done alot of time practising ? 🤔😋😝
thanks! yes lots of practice :)
Kleizmer?! This is old ukraine dance Gopak
Yes, it is Ukranaian but also is a klezmer piece, i believe. The styles are not mutually exclusive. I admit in future i will play different pieces to represent klezmer.
Yes, it is definitely pure Ukrainian hopak dance:
ua-cam.com/video/oPTJpYN1grA/v-deo.html
This is super impressive Michael! I love that this is out there for my to show my students and friends when they can't distinguish between styles. Also love that you got an Oliver Schroer tune in there. Nice! What is the tune you used to represent "Contemporary"?
Thanks! The Contemporary tune is called June Tune by Trent Freeman.
Well that was amazing! It is interesting to hear hints of cross fertilization all over the place. The only one I found a tad off was Shetland. Perhaps it was just the tune selection. PS I am in the Cape Breton Tradition.
Beautiful! I never knew there were so many styles!
Yours Klezmer is Ukrainian Hopak
Why does American and French Canadian fiddle slap? It’s so good.
WOW... so very interesting. I had no idea that there are so many different styles of fiddle music. What a talented young man.
So Sick!!
Took me you can't tap your foot to old American stlye
Wow the tone is so vibrant and clean. Awesome performance
Wonderful! how did you produce the backing tracks?
Thanks! For this video i made the backing tracks myself, before i filmed the fiddle part.
Wonderful man... Thanks very much for the education! Sincerly
AWESOME!! NONSTOP! VARIATION!
The last one in Italy is known as "Rosamunda"!
A lot of work and mental concentration there Michael. Very well done!
Really enjoyed hearing the different styles
Oh I love the sound of blues how I check up of that tune
Fabulous. A lot of concentration and practice has gone into sounding this good. Well done.
Seriously impressive. Fantastic work!
I whould like play like you Can me make please?
Got the red river jig in there, got me wanting to start jigging
That's not klezmer
