I am going to get a messor barbarus colony soon (my first ever ant colony) from a local ant keeper (15-20 workers or more) do you have any tips for keeping them or just anything? and how long does it take to get to a level like yours? (I hope they take years because it looks hard to manage them in this big size 😄)
Congrats 😄🙌🏻 this colony is about 2,5 years now so yeah they can grow fast if your lucky 😄 But they really need lots of patience in the beginning. It’s not uncommon for queens to just die from one day to another the first year so they can be quite hard to start sometimes. Also they can see through red therefor that don’t work and they eat 80-90% seeds so don’t feed them to many protein in form of insects ☺️

How many thousands would you estimate that colony. Messor Barbarus is one of the ants I’ve been considering to rekindle my ant keeping hobby but I’m not sure as from what I’ve researched they can grow to very large colonies and I’ve maybe not got the space to house a very large colony. Are there any species you would advise that generally form smaller size colonies. Very interesting video and some good camera work
Well I have no idea the size. Maybe between 5-6,000. But they are also 3 years old and they have been heated the hole time. So they could definitely grow slower
@@AntHolleufer oooo I started ant keeping 3 years ago and I got a Meranoplus bicolor colony as my oldest colony which is also 3 years old they don't grow in huge amount so it's so surprising to see huge colonies 😀♥️
If you want to build epic setups for your ants 🐜, might I suggest that you check out Ants Canada 🇨🇦! He builds unbelievable setups for his ants. Just a thought.
I'm new with ant keeping can get some help I had queen carpenter ant lay it's fist eggs it has three or four of them but what got me was the fact that the aunt had stripes on its back so I'm not exactly sure what species it is but if I could get some assistance on caring for it it would be awesome

You should train them to resist the light. I have successfully done that with mine and they are fine and don’t mind the light! 😊

u can put a filter over the nest so it is dark to them but we can se in :)
Yeah I have tried that but still the ants starts to relocate everything so somehow it doesn’t work 😕🤔

Haha yeah most my colonies are small just one mega colony but it’s always amazing following the growth they have over the years 😄
