Who is Ant Holleufer?
I’m a small UA-camr who strives to showcase the exciting life of an ant through vlogs, DIYs, unboxings and reviews. My main focus revolves around my own colonies! I will also make tips and tricks videos for both beginners and more experienced ant keepers - it’s an adventure for both you and me.

The ants store the seeds in the tubing, where it isn't too moist, they do this so the seeds don't sprout. They are very smart Messor Barbarus.

Messor barbarus are famous for their red headed "super"majors! Not only those big majors but also smaller ones are reddish and the queen can have red head, thorax and also gaster, but they are usually all black or just a bit reddish under a stronger light/sunlight
(also Messor don't consume sugarwater, honeywater and stuff like that, if they will, it's only for water, water source is a must have!!)
about those seeds, they always move them quickly in a temporary spot, then they move it inside their nest, about insect feeding don't worry to put there a whole adult cockroach, or a few adult crickets, my colony that is about 1/4 the size eats them no problem within a day XD

Yeah I think it just took to much time to clean and maintain. It took my girlfriend almost 30 minutes to sort the trash from the workers 😅
Often time when a queen is a red-headed or bicolored the majors have a small precent chance of being a “red head”, it happened to my ant colonies of messor but now that I know I am amazed

Mate, I am Spanish, so I am very used to this species.
That said, be careful with the tubing when dealing with this species. Majors will chew on it and will eventually provoke a leak.

My Messor Barbarus queen always curls her gaster under her thorax. I’ve been told that it’s just them trying to protect their abdomen when they feel slightly defensive or threatened. I can’t wait for my firs workers and it’ll be fun to watch this colony grow even bigger

The thought of being an ant weirds me out.. Imagine just casually pushing other ants aside just to get to your nest entrance
My Messor colony loves canary seeds they were very picky at first but after giving them canary seeds they swarmed them and went through way more seeds a week also the seed nest should be dryer the brood nest should be around 65-80% humidity

I wanted a Queen Messor Structor. But the one i bought arrived dead. Dehydrated is my guess. The cotton looked dry. And the water was hot to the touch. It took 4 days to deliver. And the usps driver also delivered it at 5pm 🤦♂️

I have a question...as usual.
But my question is.
Can Camponotus Vagus queen have a major as her first worker, because yesterday I found that queen with only one worker (major) and no brood.
Hello 👋🏻. I wouldn’t say a major can be the first worker although the rest of the colony could have died. Not saying it can’t happen. But it wound be quite a cost full operation for the queen to produce 🤔

How do you plan to hibernate such a huge colony?
Well messor only need to hibernate at 10-15 so I’m thinking of just turning of the heat in the ant room and see how it goes. But messor barbarus actually don’t need to hibernate as they don’t do it in Africa where they also live. But I’m thinking of just seeing the temp when winter comes

I treat my Messor colony with "bee pollen balls". IDK how it is named in English correctly, but most of "bee products" shops sell it. They tend to trash it 3 out of 5 times, but when they do eat, they eat it to absolute.

@@vctltns Nope, not even close to Netherlands. So cannot help you with shop name. But herr it is kind of getting into mainstream, so may "healthy-natural" food stores have it. Plus, honey and bee product specialist shops have it, they have even weirder stuff on hand, like preserved dead bees sometimes...

Is it possible for you queen to have a bi coloured grandparent? That's why some workers are bi coloured. Or it could be broody boosting from a bi queen conolys.
