The CCHA was once around in the 80's and 90's and had different teams in it (The Big Ten schools, Illinois-Chicago and Kent State, to name a few). The league broke up in 2013 when the Big Ten announced a creation of a hockey league and the NCHC was formed. The remaining members joined the WCHA... That was until 2019, when 7 of the 10 schools in the WCHA (Basically all but Alabama-Huntsville and the two Alaska schools) decided to leave the conference in order to reform the CCHA (Bowling Green kept the rights to the name). A year later, they added St. Thomas. The Tommies are in the middle of an unprecedented move from Division III to Division I after getting the boot from the MIAC for being too damn good. Augustana (SD) is set to be the next member of the conference starting next season as they begin their hockey program.
@@AJ13688: I didn't mention that because it had no relevance to the whole story... but, yes, Notre Dame did join Hockey East before landing in the Big Ten.
@@Seadragon77 If someone looked up the current schools in the Big Ten hockey conference, they’d initially assume that Notre Dame was always there when that isn’t the case. I just want to be sure that all the information is within this comment thread.
Thank you for more hockey content! You should do the ECAC college hockey conference next! A bunch of teams are also in the Ivy League so their arenas look super fancy!
One interesting part of the Taffy Abel Arena is they have an actual freighter ship horn in the arena which blows when goals are scored. Probably the loudest goal horn there is.
our local junior rink has a train horn and that is more than loud enough for me. I don't know much about ship horns but I imagine that to be unpleasant :)
@@aaronnachazel247 I am getting old because that sounds unpleasant to me :) Last time I went to a Saskatchewan Jr League game I wished I brought my ear protection I wear when using power tools!
That's why I didn't hear any ship horns from the freighters passing through Sault Ste. Marie years ago, the college took the horn for use at hockey games. Too bad the Greyhounds don't use something like that too.
@@higgy04 this made me laugh! Grew up in Ontario but never made it as northwest as The Sault except one time when I was moving to Saskatchewan! For those not aware Sault is pronounced "Sue" and the Greyhounds are the junior team that Wayne Gretzky played for.
The outside of the Bowling Green Arena looks like a mid-tier mall that was anchored with a K Mart built in the late 60s but has been out of business since the financial crisis of 2008. Inside however it looks like a great atmosphere. Its true you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
St Thomas is interesting because the football team was dominant at the division 3 level so much that the school decided to move the football team straight up to division 1. And dragged every other team along with them about 4 years ago, thus the catch up needed on athletic facilities
So Mankato arena used to Be the Verizon Wirless Center and before that the Alltel Wirless Center, they used to be a major employer in the City, but after they left they let the naming rights lapse and so Mayo Health Systems bought the rights, they are a division of the famed Mayo Clinic in Rochester so its a nice local business connection, even if the name could use some work.
as a person who went to MNSU-Mankato, it's a fun fun arena and a great atmosphere to be in! especially when the band plays, which I might be biased since i was in the band. overall great venue to watch hockey in!
If you need great pictures of the Mattire family arena (Atlantic Sacred Heart University) I’ll give you permission to use mine as they are great quality ones. I got to meet the head coach of AIC yellow jackets that game which was pretty neat as I have known him only by social media. Do you have an email or any contact info I can provide for you?
The Ferris State arena is how many of the arenas here in Saskatchewan look with seating on one side and behind the goals and one side just a wall. The Cage in Nipawin Sask home of the Hawks is like that. Say you should do a video on the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League! The Michigan Tech arena looks really good inside. Minnesota State's is pretty good too. Why isn't Minnesota State still called the Screaming Eagles, Hayden Fox is one of the greatest NCAA coaches of all time!
The best part about hockey is there are so many leagues and great arenas out there to make endless content. The United States and Canada have many college, juniors and pro leagues it’s a lot to go through. Even Australia has an ice hockey league! South America does not have much of anything. No African countries. The further North of the earth you go the more leagues there are. The German DEL league and Swiss National league have some great big arenas. Northern Michigan’s hockey arena might be boring, but their football stadium, the superior dome, has the world’s largest wooden roof!
And Northern Michigan’s football program is absolutely horrible.
