Thank you for making these videos about Nihonga. I live in Japan and I came across Nihonga in a workshop at a museum in Fukuoka. I fell in love with the whole concept - the complexity and introspection that comes with every artwork. The colors are so subtle and beautiful. I feel so drawn to the art and I’ve never been interested in learning how to paint before but now I would like to start doing it. Your videos are quite helpful, very informative and easy to follow and understand. Hope you make more videos on different techniques for beginners like me.

Does the quality of the wood or the wood type matter? I have heard that it does for canvas with oil paintings so I would think it matters even moreso for the more delicate washi paper. With such a thing in mind, I am suprised that gesso is enough of a barrier. Then again, it seems that withNihonga there's moreof an expectation for the person who receives the art to care for the piece compared to a more western expectation (by comparison) of the artist to use strong materials strong to endure the reciever giving less delicate and diligent of care for the piece. It's interesting how such different perspectives and expectations from the artist and person who owns the art piece result in such different methods!
As you mentioned, the quality of wood is important. It's essential to choose wood with low resin and minimal warping. For wood like shina with low content, if the washi paper is thick enough, gesso will work to prevent the resin from bleeding through. However, for long-term preservation, such as over 100 years, there are several methods to consider, such as underlaying or backing the paper. I believe that professional artists need to take these factors into account. Additionally, if the wooden panel deteriorates, the artwork can be re-mounted onto a new panel. To reduce warping, it's also necessary to reinforce the panel's framework and carefully consider the panel's construction.

Thank you for such a clear explanation! Are there any glue alternatives? I can't seem to find starch glue specifically, just a lot of "craft" glues that won't say what they're made of. Can dosa be used as well or is it not strong enough?
Dosa isn’t sticky enough. Can you try searching “starch adhesive” “wheat glue” or “rice adhesive” on the internet? I’ve found several starch types of glue on amazon.com so I guess you’ll be able to find something similar. This type of glue is also used for bookbinding. You can also make it by yourself with powdered starch, and water, by heating it. You can come across a youtube video on how to make starch glue quite easily.
Western gesso (acrylic) will prevent resin from wood. But traditionally, the most reliable way to stop resin on wooden panels is to paste paper on the whole surface of the panel (the process is called "下貼り Shitabari").

Hello. In the video, I mentioned "Dosa biki Washi," which translates to "sized paper." It refers to Washi paper that has been treated with Dosa, a sizing agent. Specifically, I use Dosa biki Kumohada Washi, which I have explained in another video. English subtitles are available, so if you're unsure about what I said, please refer to them :)
The amount of water depends on the climate and the thickness of the paper. If the paper gets transparent, the paper might not have been sized, or the sizing is not enough. Generally, it should not get transparent.
Cutting the edges will work. If you'd like to avoid cutting the sides of the paper, there is also a method of softening the glue with hot water and peeling off the washi paper.
You repeatedly apply hot water over the Japanese paper on the side of the panel with a brush. By doing this, the glue loosens with the hot water, making it possible to peel off the paper using a scraper. It's a task that requires patience, but if done slowly, you can peel the washi paper off neatly. If I can make a video in the future, I will.
Hi Kiyo! I got some washi from Hiromi paper. The one they had with sizing was Yamada. The employee said it doesn't have much dosa sizing. Do you recommend that I size it myself, or do you think it is sufficient? Thank you so much for your wonderful and generous instructions!
It’s difficult to judge without actually trying the paper. Try mounting the paper on a panel and start painting. Then if you feel that the dosa sizing isn’t enough, it is possible to add dosa solution afterwards.

Cutting the edges will work. If you'd like to avoid cutting the sides of the paper, there is also a method of softening the glue with hot water and peeling off the washi paper.
