  • The #Fiat 127’s introduction, in 1971, is one of the most significant chapters of Fiat’s #history, as it finally brought the company’s superminis into the modern era. This video is about the first series of the #Fiat127, built between 1971 and 1977.
    The Fiat 127 was a runaway hit for the Turinese automaker, breaking the one million units mark in late 1974 and becoming the best-selling automobile in Europe for several years.

    My first car was a 12-year-old 127 with 17.5K miles on the clock and a full tank of petrol from a bought from an old lady for £120. It was supposed to be red but was more like faded tomato orange. I remember spending ages trying to thaw-out the frozen petrol cap lock during winter by heating the key with a lighter whilst in the petrol station. It eventually was handed to my mother who changed gears like she was mixing a pudding so much so that we had to weld the gearstick back on after it snapped off.

      Hi Roger, thank you!!!
      I’m so happy that you and the Fiat Club members appreciate my videos. As you’d expect, 127s aren’t rare here in Italy, despite being scrapped en masse during the 1990s and 2000s. People now have started to realize their historic significance and I’m seeing more and more examples being restored or preserved, and that can only be a good thing 👍

    We bought one in the late 90's for 600FIK, which is like 150€ today, and the car albeit run down was so much of fun! It's starter was bust, but it wasn't a problem, as you could runstart it alone. Didn't really use any gasoline and was relatively nice to drive, and spaceous! Local market bursted to laughter once, when we made our entrance with that yellow little devil, when 4 men all over 190cm got up from the car. "How could you all fit in there!?" almost comfortably was our anwer.
    Nowadays 150€ won't buy you even a near wreck 127.. :)

      To cover the 147, it would be ideal to film a "127 Rustica" or a late "127 Unificata." Those were Brazilian-made 147s imported to Italy and badged as 127. Finding one of these in good shape won't be easy, but I'll try :)

    Strangely, I prefer the mk2 facelift. The 1300 Sport and Palio models I remember well from my childhood. This car, along with the 126 and Panda was responsible for my lifelong interest in Italian cars. Thanks for bringing Pio Manzu to my attention - I’ve seen his work, but never realised it was him.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 роки тому +2

      It's all about tastes, after all. Having no personal memories with the 127, I look at it with my "designer eyes" and prefer the purity of earlier models.
      Pio Manzù left a sizable mark on industrial design in his short career, which makes his death even more tragic... Who knows how many more brilliant designs he could have made! The Chronotime clock I show in the video is my own one :)
      Alessi still makes it, while Flos still sells the "parentesi" lamp. A firm called Alias also makes a beautiful armchair designed by Pio Manzù... Which I don't have because it costs a fortune!

    Well, I admit I preferred the R5 and was happy when my father decided for her instead of a 127, I think the R5 design was unsurpassed for the time. It was 1974.

    Thanks again Matteo, grat video as always ! in those days as a young kid I was always fiddling with FIAT's, my dad had a small 900 T van for the city deliveries, we had a SEAT 850 Special and my sister, the lucky girl got a green Series 2 coupe for free from some admirer . The 127 never did it for me, because I had its much cooler older twin sister, the Autobianchi A 112, I had made it as close to an Abarth as possible, the carburettor of a Fiat 850 Spider and some other tricks. I loved that little monster very much, perhaps because in an acceleration test with a friend in his 6-cylinder Camaro Chevrolet, my little Autobianchi kept up with his big blue monster, I let him go because a small tunnel with a turn in it made him need all of the road to keep the car on the road. I was very surprised to seem y little Italian being so fast. The Dutch Carabinieri had a whole fleet of dark blue 127's they were very popular overhere.

    Excellent vid once again. In the 127, 128 released beforehand , and obviously the Primula , Fiat created the template for modern car manufacturing. FWD with Macferson strut suspension not only created extra space within the car volumes but kept manufacturing costs down to a minimum as you can put engine , gearbox, suspension and brake/ hub assemblies into the car in one manoever. Again the original 127 design over latter facelifts was the prettiest.

    Read that Bono was one of the main opponents within Fiat to the likes of the A112 (he wanted it to be a three-box saloon even if production was delayed though his attempt was unsuccessful), 127 and 128 featuring a hatchback, which explains why the 127 was initially a 2-door as well as why the 128 based Zastava Skala included a hatchback.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 роки тому

      I know about the 128 story, but I think the A112 one you read wasn't correct. Dante Giacosa didn't mention such an episode in his detailed memoir, plus the A112 was designed to be about as short as a 500 Giardiniera, which made a three box design impossible.

    • @wickiezulu
      @wickiezulu 3 роки тому

      Bono’s views on preferring the A112 to feature a traditional boot can be found on pages 332-333 in Dante Giacosa’s book Forty Years with Fiat.
      “As for the A 112, Bono went over the reasons that had led to the decision to manufacture it at the Autobianchi works and then returned to a subject that was very much a bee in his bonnet. The rear end looked like a station wagon or estate car and he was against it. He wanted it to look like a sedan. So he asked me to modify the rear of the coachwork even if it meant putting production back from January to March.
      I tried to change his mind by going through the whys and wherefores of the chosen form and explaining how difficult it was to get out an alternative version in a short time and without redesigning the whole auto. In the end I had to knuckle under and say we would have a go. I was given ten days to present the plaster model. The alteration came out better than I had expected, to everyone’s satisfaction.”

    Nice story, i look forward for part 2. I hope you can tell me more about the 127 Van diesel. It's a wagon without the rear seats. I had one in 2020 but sold it again, because it didn't run. If I understood correctly, that must be a late model from the 80s, made in Brazil. It's very rare indeed now, given these cars were bought and used as workhorses and driven into the ground by their owners.

    I bought one of these in the 1970s. What a mistake-a-to-make. I particularly liked the way the quarter light windows fell out when you went over a bump. Oh and the way that British approved brake fuid eroded the pipe between the reservoir and the master cylinder - you had to nip over to Italy to get some unapproved stuff or replace the pipe every three months or so.

My car passion begins on the black one (I was 3 years old). But here in Brazil the 147 had no good reputation, in special about gear change. We had 3 series. The second serie is call "Europa", because of front headlights seem 127. Here in Brazil we had some 147 variations too, sedan, station wagon, 2 pickups, van. Please when you make a video about 147, search about Oggi (147 sedan) wich had a special homologation serie to race here in Brazil, If you need help with Brazil's Fiat history please contact me, I would love help you

    My mum bought a brand new Seat 127 five doors in April 1980,
    The five doors were launched just a few weeks before.
    We needed to sold it out agan in August 1983 within 50.000 kms after constant technical issues.
    Seat made un Barcelona from mid 70s to early 90s were terrible quality builded.
    The first Seat 127 were far much nicer to see; from 1977 turned inside and outside modern but very boring.

  • @wickiezulu
    @wickiezulu 3 роки тому +1

    Always felt the 127 could have benefited from a 5-door hatchback bodystyle like on the SEAT Frua (the same goes with an Italian built 3/5-door 128 hatchback) as well as a Renault 7-like 2/4-door three-box saloon bodystyle similar to the Brazilian Fiat Oggi, yet in the case would of the latter would its size have meant a 2/4-door Fiat Oggi would encroach too much on the 2/4-door Fiat 128?
    Also of the view export versions of 127 and 128 along with the related X1/9 outside of Italy would have benefited from earlier 1.5-1.6 versions of the Fiat 128 SOHC engine.

    • @Matteo_Licata
