- An easy way to do the washing up after making cold process soap no oily utensils, no oil slick in your water, and no oil down your drains.
In the video I talk about using microfibre cloths, they are fantastic for this clean up job, we use microfibre in many clothes and cloths nowadays, did you know when you wash them they release microparticles? (you know all those floating plastic things we are trying to eliminate from our oceans). I always wash all of my microfibre items in a special washing bag that catches these fibres and prevents them from getting into the waterways. I find this the easiest way to clean up after cold process soap making and also a very effective way to prevent oils from going down your drain and causing all sorts of problems in your drainage system.
I know it's not a very exciting topic, but it is a question I see asked a lot on some soapy forums that I'm a member of, so hopefully, you might find it useful especially if you're fed up of that oils mess you create when you wash up your soap equipment.
I try to give lots of hints and tips in all of my videos, so hopefully, you can use some of the techniques in this cold process soap making tutorial in your own soap making.

Ok, I just watched this whole video, and I must say I've never before been so rivited by watching someone wash their dishes. Really incredibly well done job of explaining your process and the reasoning behind each step. Are you a teacher as well? Your soap is not only beautifully crafted, but your videos are very well thought out as well. The thought process and techniques you use to achieve the results you desire is always thoroughly explained. What a great channel you have!

I still like to let the oils saponify over night on my equipment and then use what soap is on it to clean it. Works great for me.
Yes, a lot of people like to do that and I think it's a perfectly good method, anything that stops all that oil going down the drain. I just like to get everything all cleared up and put away as soon as I've finished. Take care of yourself, stay safe and well
After the first couple of times I washed up and it took a ton of Dawn to cut through the oils, I bought some microfiber cloths, an ‘orange’ degreaser and spray bottle from the Dollar Store. After wiping down my bowls and spatulas I spray them with the degreaser, and then with just a little Dawn on the sponge I give them a quick wash and rinse or toss them in the dishwasher. I usually have to tall containers of water for my stick blender; one with hot soapy water the other with plain water. A quick wash and rinse and it hangs on a hook. I also have a spray bottle of white vinegar that I use on my lye container. And I have a third spray bottle for my alcohol...whether it’s to spray the top of my soap or to clean. The cloths go into a bucket in the garage and I use them to clean whatever as they are ‘pre-loaded’ with soap.
That sounds perfect, it's so much nicer not having to deal with horrible oily water and jugs and things that are still greasy after you've cleaned them. You sound like you've got it sorted :-)

@@IDreamInSoap Think they will be now, Lisa. My soap batter today had cocoa butter for the first time. It traced very quickly on me and I was so scared it was going to seize, i rushed it into the mold. I was doing one half kaolyn clay the other, pink. So, I was frantic! But my batter stayed manageable. Got it poured off, then spooned but because of my haste I did leave more batter in the jugs. Now, I'm learning don't panic. Just get a bigger spatula. I have always used shop towels and once wiped I leave overnight by my shop sink or load my shop dishwasher and run/wash the next day. I am going to use microfiber from now on. Thanks!!
I like the microfibre, I think it makes a big difference, the 1st time used them for soap dishes I was 'Aw this is a shame, they're too fluffy and nice' but they just suck everything up so much better than towels, then they wash up really well too.
What a great idea to use a towel to wipe down the dishes! I was using paper towels, and never got EVERYTHING off (and hated the waste), so I just started waiting the whole day. Thanks for the tips!

What a wonderful tip Lisa! I used to let my pots and utensils wait until the next day when the batter had saponified but then I did not like having dirty dishes around the kitchen. So, I stopped that and used to clean everything with paper towels before washing them in the sink but then I did not like the waste either so your solution is the best of both worlds. I am so grateful! I think of you every time I make soap!

You have a wealth of knowledge! I’m researching how to make soap etc. Because my momma & I both have very sensitive skin. I want to make something that will help that. I’ve been reading a book on the science that cp soap is. Ive been making a list of supplies etc. But not once did I think about the proper way to clean up. Thank you for sharing so much info with us. I have not made soap yet but am binge watching videos to soak in as much information as I can before I do my first cold process soap. I greatly appreciate your videos as they are very informative and inspiring. I find most of the videos deal with the pour and the process. It would be ever so helpful to learn about the different oils.. the properties they bring to soap and do they behave well with others. You are a gifted soap maker and I would appreciate your insights.

Very helpful, and I know I’ll order from them. Also Supoon. Who can resist that name? It’s downright silly, but their products are really neat. I’m an admitted kitchen gadget lush, so I know I’ll be ordering from them, too. I like that you allowed your ‘fans’ into your home, as it were. Not everyone would let outsiders see the messy bits. You have just saved my pipes from a total disaster! Had no clue that oil doesn’t go down the drain, after two years of making soap. Better late then never. I pre washed my jugs and then placed them in the dishwasher. Now, I’ll dry them like you do and still place them in dishwasher. Thanks

It was so satisfying watching you scrape the bottle out 😁. I love you advocating to use towels that can be washed and reused. Loads of people use paper towels which is so wasteful. I'm guilty of using paper towels to keep my workspace easy to clean. I need to take a note from this and get some dedicated soap towels for my workspace. I'm one of those who stacks all my dishes and washes them a day or two later. It means I make much less soap sometimes because of this, but I'm a full time teacher anyway. I very rarely use any paper towels, I have some small scrappy rags that I use for wiping off any stirrers etc that I've mixed mica up in etc but then the microfibre cloths are brilliant, they just suck everything up and make it so much easier. They're so much better than paper towels
I Dream In Soap I love microfiber cloths! They're amazing for cleaning so many surfaces. Scrappy rags are great too. I'm big on "waste not want not," and I love to find ways to reduce waste. I've got an old shirt of my husband's that needs to be cut up for cleaning rags.
I tried this method of cleaning soap equipment yesterday and it worked great. There is an additional step of using the cloth to remove all remaining oils, but the actual washing step is done a lot faster and with less water. All pitchers and spatulas were squeaky clean when I finished.

My favorite tips are washing your stick blender right away and wiping everything down before washing. I think this will help me cut down on my cleaning time. I also soap over an old towel. That way if I make a mess, which I always do, I just fold up the towel and wash it the next day. Plus it gives me a place to put messing things down.

I like to wipe all my stuff down with towels to get rid of all the oil/lye then do a second wipe down, spritzing them with 91% isopropyl alcohol and using new towels so everything is sterilized. I wait several days before putting the towels in the wash to make sure everything saponifies. (It doesn't do much good if you just change which pipe the oil/lye goes down.) Thanks for the info on the supoon. I'm off to order one.
I have that spoon but it hasn't been demoted to soap (just) yet! It's still my favourite spoon for pickle jars 😉
They are so great aren't they. I have a supoon as well (the big version) and use it when I'm cooking all the time.
I have been making CP soap about 3 years and cleaning up after soaping was always a pain for me. I am so glad to find this video. Just wondering if you could share your experience how to clean silicon mold. I have many silicon molds with very intricate designs. After unmold the soap, I just wash them in hot water with liquid detergent. I have to use toothbrush to clean the intricate design, but I am not sure if this is the right way to clean as I sometimes feel there is some oil left on the molds. BTW, I really enjoy watching your soap making videos. You have inspired me to try some of the soaping techniques that I have never done before. Thanks!
Thank you so much Serana. Your way of cleaning the moulds sounds just fine, I would do exactly the same with the silicone moulds, using a brush to get into all the details.
Thank you, like you I use my kitchen our laundry is not big enough. I am hopeless scraping out the bowls jugs, no matter how I try, I bought mini spatulas thinking they would work, not better than big ones, must be my old hands. I’ve been using paper towels terrible for the environment and not that effective. I’ve heaps of microfibres cloths, I will now try these. Yours look so clean before washing, any tips on scraping would be appreciated.
Cleaning up after soap making is a dreaded task for me! I like to use very hot water and I squirt a bit of DAWN dish detergent in each container and then fill with the hot water and let them soak for a few hours. I soap in my kitchen too so I def like to get those items cleaned up as soon as I can. Sometimes tho I will come across a container or too which still feel a bit oily, so I spray them with my alcohol and wipe them out with paper towel. I like the tip on using the micro fiber towel! I'll invest in a few myself to hopefully eliminate the sometimes oily containers. Thanks for sharing!
Hey Michelle, I agree get it done straight away. I actually like it when you're just drying the things up and putting them all away clean and sparkly. I must admit though the good wipe with microfibre cuts down so much on any other sprays, using tissues and all sorts, just a simply wash after and they're all done.

I don't make soap but this was actually a very helpful video I would always thought how easy it must be to clean all you have to do is throw everything in water not knowing that you have to wait 24 hours.

Can you tell me what the soap/gadget was you used when you washed your soaping gloves? It looked like a bar of soap with a magnet attached.
Thank you Kerstin. It is so much nicer to get rid of that horrible oily water situation. The soap thing is a magnetic soap holder and it is as you say a bracket on the wall and then a little disk, a bit like a beer bottle top gets pushed into the soap, they're excellent for keeping your soap in good condition.

Hi Lisa, love your videos really helpful for us lot in the UK. One thing I notice on all clean up videos, no one mentions the tubs or jugs used to make Lye solution. How do you clean these? I spray with vinegar because I’m scared if I leave some. I’d really like to know what you do, or is just soapy water ok?
Hi Rachel. I just rinse mine in plenty of water and then wash in hot soapy water with the rest of the things. Lye dissolves really easily in water, it won't cling to your jugs etc.

Hey Shonna, thank you my good friend. The 'thing' is a magnetic soap holder, it's brilliant. It's a little bracket that attaches to the wall then you get a metal disc, a bit like a beer bottle top that you push into your soap, it then keeps the soap lovely and dry, they're brilliant. If I'm using a fancy soap (this was just a ball of squished up off cuts) I put the metal disc thing on the top of the soap, then they hand down like little pictures.

Great video. I do have a question about the lye eating away the fabric? Does it not? I would think before saponification it would eat the material away. Thanks for your great videos!
Hi, thanks for your comment. The lye will not affect the fabric as sodium hydroxide (Lye) only dissolved proteins. In fact what happens is as you leave your cloths over night (or longer) the batter will saponify and turn your oil and lye rag into a rag with soap on it, therefore making it fine to put in your wash and not risk putting oil down your drain. My one question - and I apologize in advance if I missed it - but what do you do with the microfibre cloths when you're done? That is what's leftover after you cleaned everything else. I used your method of washing up today for the first time. My microfibre cloths aren't nearly as large or quite as fluffy as yours but 2 did the trick for me. The first one, however, that took the brunt of most of the cleanup was really glopped up and I wasn't quite sure how to clean that. Thanks in advance... this is a great method that I will continue to use.
Hi, thanks for the comment. With my cloths I leave them for 24 hours so that the soap has saponified and then just put them in the washing machine with a normal load. If I'm not washing anything that day I throw them straight in the washing machine and leaved them there, if I am, I just put them in a bag or something. You can leave them for as long as you like, just a minimum of 24 hours so you're not putting oil in your washing machine

It's a good method isn't it and works well, especially if you have to be so careful like you with your septic tank, I can't bear to think of doing it the greasy water way - yuk
I am pleased to say I do the same sore of clean up you do, immediately after making soap. Hate coming back to dirty dishes. HOWEVER, I would have given the dishes a final rinse under hot water to remove the soapy water residue.. Do you not give dishes a final rinse?
Hey Terry, it depends, if they feel squeaky clean, I just dry them thoroughly, as they have had the soap rinsed as they were washed, if I can feel any of the slip of soap then they get a nother rinse.
Is “Potassium alum” available in your country? You may try spread the solution of it before washing. It really helps when I go out to teach.

Hi Karen, did you mean did I make the soap, or the holder? The soap was just trimmings from another soap, end bits and bevel trimmings, the holder is a magnetic soap holder. It's like a bracket on the wall and a disk a bit like a beer bottle cap gets pushed into the soap. I'm not sure where you're based but if you do a search for magnetic soap holder lots should pop up, They are fab for keeping your soap in good condition.

I have really scrappy bits of rag, I wipe the pots out really well with dry rag and then wash the pots as normal. My scrappy rags go in the was with my other cloths just fine, I do scrape the pots well though so that there's not tons of mica

This may seem a silly question, but I’m curious... When you wash your rags, do you use laundry soap, or do you rely on the soap in your rags?
HI Juanita, I add laundry soap as well, mainly because they just go into a normal washing load after they have sat and saponified.
Use a wood spoon handle to clean bottles or a skinny stick.

I had a quick scan through but couldn’t see any questions/ answers to: how to put the holes in the top of your stick blender head? A regular drill won’t even make a mark on the steel material.
Carbide drill bit - drill from the inside outwards. Go slow.

I have trouble scraping out EVERY bit of my batter. No matter what I do I can't get it all. All of the spatulas I have(and cant find) are slightly angled, they aren't perfectly square/flat at the edge, and they're either too rigid or too flexible to get every bit out. Is there a particular brand or type you use and recommend?

Hi Nick, I scrape it out with a great spoon called a 'supoon' from Dreamfarm. Then I put a tiny bit of water in it and soap washing liquid and an small cloth, shut it up and give it a good shake

Additionally, thinking about your idea of cleaning your containers with a microfibre cloth I wonder how you then clean the cloth and what happens to the oils on it as it must be well and truly impregnated with it by the time you have finished? I made a batch of soap earlier this week and cut down on the jugs to use by using recycled yoghurt pots, and the like, wiping the excess out of them with blue paper roll and then disposing of them in the recycling bin. That way they'll be used at least three times; how green is that ? Ha, ha!
@@nickaskham5723 Ah, ha, sorry Nick. I use squeeze bottles in some of my designs. For example this one ua-cam.com/video/nk82AAOxabk/v-deo.html. For the cloths, if you make sure you don't wash them for at least a day all of the oils etc will have saponified and there will be none left, then you are just washing soap. I love your recycling, it's excellent. I am shortly doing a video on reducing single use plastic in soap making. I must admit I do like the cloths rather than paper towels as the paper towels still cause excess waste. the cloths are reusable time and time again, and although you have to wash them, I just add them in with a was that I'm doing so I don't actually do an extra wash
@@IDreamInSoap Hello again - many thanks for your reply. I acknowledge what you say regarding the microfibre cloths which are, as many know, extremely useful for lots of different applications. However, your suggestion of leaving them for a day and then washing them because the oils will have saponified, hardly rings true. Saponification, as well you know, only occurs when oils are mixed with lye, therefore wiping out jugs that have contained anything other than soap batter will result in your microfibre cloth being impregnated with substances likely to affect your drains, ie oils. I agree that using paper towels to wipe out jugs and pots adds to waste but, again as a well known fact, when microfibre cloths are washed, many of the tiny fibres go with the washing water and ultimately end up in the sea. Using recycled pots for all but the lye and soap batter ultimately means far less items to wash up, which I do a day or two later using the saponified soap batter.

Hey Lisa- how accurate is your scale? Could you please share what it is? Thank you kindly.
My main scale can be calibrated it's a KD7000 so I have bought a certified calibration weight and regularly calibrate it. My small scale (the dual one) Heston Blumethal precision. The bigger platform is slightly out (i.e. it shows weight 0.1% heavier than it is) but he precision part of it is accurate. I only use the big part of the dual scale if things can afford to be off a tiny bit

After I wash them up? no, I don't give them another rinse, they're all nice and clean at that point so I just dry them up

I seen one lady use a condom inside her squeeze bottle. It seemed to work as a liner, lol. Also, after cleaning gloves, try a bit of baby powder.
Oh no!!! how funny :-) Yes powder would be good, especially sometimes if you take them off and then need to put them on again soon, and your hands are a bit sweaty
