Being a Golden Retriever Owner I can tell that it's not as easy as it seems to raise a Goldie. Even though they are one of the most intelligent and gentle dogs, there are quite a few challenges that every new parent goes through. So I decided to share all the advice and tips for raising a Golden Retriever.
Mine was a rescue, but I never doubted he was pure Golden. He is a cartoon cliche of Golden personality. The most Golden Retriever-y of any Golden I've known.
Mine is a rescue also. His DNA test 100 percent golden retriever.
I have had golden retrievers most of my life (45+ years), they were all purebred but looked somewhat different in color, feathering, and size, and they have all been good dogs. Young and unneutered males can be very energetic. We had one close to 100#, and the others have been between 55-75#. Their coats vary as well, from almost white (English cream) to red. They respond very well to training. There are 3 appearance types English, American, and Canadian. I have adopted a few adult goldens from rescues who took a few months to adjust but soon demonstrated the stereotypical golden personality. They are great dogs.

Golden are awesome. In 2022 I was diagnosed with cancer. My golden was diagnosed with cancer 6 months later. The veteran gave her 3 to six months, she went down in 3 weeks. Her name is Molly, she was with me through my battle. Unfortunately Molly had a rapid, aggressive cancer . Molly was 7 years old. Wow do I miss her.
I feel your pain at losing Molly. I lost my Goldie too last year. Wonderful dog and my best friend.
I do hope your cancer is in remission and wish you well for the future.
We got a rescued Golden from an Amish puppy mill in Ohio. No doubt that she is a purebred but we sent in for a DNA sample. She is 6 years old. We have had her for two months. She is the most loving affectionate fur baby that we have ever had. Now, I'm busy leash training, command training, etc. She had two accidents in the house the first week. None since. After 6 years in a cage. Two months in a foster home. I cringe when I realize that she may have had as many as 12 litters if they only started breeding her at 2 years of age. Give birth then have your puppies taken away after two weeks? Maybe less? Over and over. Yet you would never know it by her behavior. She does eat her poop. Working on breaking her of that. The Vet said they do that when no one cleans their cage. God bless all of your little angels...

ar or lead near him I've tried 100% ,he never put weight on wen I got him from a farm he was in a barn all on his own no other pup his mum just him crying, I picked him up and the crying stop, a woman came in the barn ben jumped from me and ran away I'm very cheeky and said i why his here he likes so she was desperate to get rid of him, she wanted 3,000 pounds for him any at the end I picked him back up and handed 600 pounds took him home my great grand kids they was over the moon that's the story for now I will finish it of after I will wait to see how many gets .back to me cx

We have 1 yr old female Golden retriever puppy, her hair is longer and dense than a Labrador retriever but shorter and less dense than i see the one in the video or other videos. Is this normal for a Goldie ? Someone please advise

Yes. This breed can easily become overweight - better to have them always hungry than overweight and unhealthy.
You described an American golden retriever, not every golden retriever has feathering and a tail like that, for instance there’s also Canadian and British/English goldens

Just because a dog isn’t AKC doesn’t mean its NOT purebred because not every dog is registered
Agreed!! My dog is purebred and she is not registered but I know who her parents are.
Go to a reputable breeder, ones that pay to do the proper genetic health testing on their dogs and show them be it in obedience, conformation, field trials. Be willing to pay the money for a pup. You'll get a purebred. There is no way to tell by "looking" if a dog is purebred. Goldens vary in the amount of hair and feathering and color. It could be mixed and look like a calendar perfect golden retriever and take after one of its parents or even grandparents more than anything else. If you adopt or rescue that is a great thing, but don't expect you will always get a purebred dog, especially from shelters which tend to look at a gold, long-haired dog and say "golden retriever" or a black and tan largish dog and say "German shepherd." Beware of breeders who specialize by "color." There's a real move to have creamy nearly white colored goldens more like the ones found in the U.K. because its believed thtey have fewer health issues. However, there are a lot of creamy, large, long-haired dogs. Go to a backyard breeder or a store or what have you and you might pay big money for a mixed breed. Always know who you are buying from. I support rescue. Unless you need a purebred for show purposes, I urge everyone to rescue. And if you've always wanted "X breed," then do your research and go to a terrific breeder. Will not ever judge anyone. Just be sure to spay/neuter!

Although puppies don't get the feathering on the legs, chest and the fluffy feather duster tail until later. We had a neighbor ask what kind of mix my golden was cause she was 6 months, huge but didn't have all her long adult fur yet. It's slowly but surely coming in.
Our golden is 1/4 English cream, and they tend to have a bit less hair and of course are much lighter. Our dog's feathering and coat did not fill in until he was almost two.
Mine too, she's 5 months and it's just starting to fill in. Her back, chest, back of her legs and tail are all getting fluffy!
I was about to ask this coz this is how ours look now at 5mos old. Though we do have papers. I’m from the Philippines. Then the tail is downward because it is relaxed most of the time. I’ll check probably when he is on “alert mode”?
The question is pretty simple, if golden retriever is written in the breeding registration, than it’s a purebred (hopefully, if your dog is not a product of the puppy mill or is not from a backyard breeder). If the dog does not have a breeding registration (not to mix up with vet papers!) or not golden retriever is written than it’s not a purebred.
A Marcedes without a vehicle registration card proving it’s a Mercedes is not a Mercedes. I hope you got it.
Be aware of the backyard breeders/puppy mills.

My golden retriever (2.5-years-old male) was registered as a pure bred golden on his vet papers. He was a re-home/local rescue. He lived with his first family for 18 mo. and they could not bother themselves to train him, so they just left him in a garage. As a result, he has had horrible leash behavior, mainly leash aggression lunging at other dogs and cats when he is out walking on leash. He’s also territorial near home, and will bark at other dogs when he’s in the car too. He is not aggressive with dogs when he is off-leash, at a dog park. He started dog obedience clases 2 weeks ago at Petsmart - I’m hoping he will learn how to behave nicely with other dogs while walking on leash, and not tugging and lunging. I think his lunging ranges from him wanting to greet dogs (and people) to being territorial or overly protective. Rescues can be a lot of work. But we adore him! He also tries to jump on people to say hi!
Hope it works out for you and the dog. It is so critical to socialize any breed extensively before they are six months old. Leaving a dog in a garage or a fenced-in yard, never to interact with other dogs or a variety of people will do great damage - even for a breed as affable as a golden.
Being calm yourself and loads of patience when he does react while on the leash and you will get the golden of your dreams .but most of all be consistent with your training .There are plenty of UA-cam videos to help and guide you along with the classes you attend. Good luck and enjoy your Golden
My golden retriever is 1 year 3 months old. I bought her after seeing their parents. She is having feathering over front legs and tails. But not having enough hair growth. Does it take more time to reach full hair growth?. Really worried 😢. Someone help.
for everyone who have shorter hairs on their golden :
1 year old is bare minimum , give them like 18 months to fully grow their body and fur.
You need to use conditioners and proper grooming to get good quality hairs.

I had a golden retriever he had all the pedigree looks he looked like the one you are showing same color everything except he had a blue spot in the middle of his tongue he was the best I thought he might ha e a little chow in him I got him from a old lady he could not take care of him anymore
It's not unusual to have a dark spot on the tongue. Many purebred Goldens do!

My golden is a pure,he is also very loyal to other dogs and humans but he get angry very easily if show him my hand he gets fire on me and he doesn't left my hand until he bites my hand he just holds my hands otherwise he is very good boy I am giving him traning at home he is learning very fast he is now of 6 months
All these are visible only in a young adult and not a young puppy that we usually get from a breeder.

July 9 2024 I adopted a rescued golden don't know anything about his past . He does not listen, don't know his age. Is there any way to know his when I asked the doc one said he is just one other said may be 2 or 3 years.

You must really try to visit another vet since they are the experts in knowing your doggo's age! Most of the time they make the conclusion based on a Dog's Teeth condition, Hearing condition, Muscle condition, and other senses. We're glad we could help! Thank you so much for the comment😄

Rescue or reputable and ethical breeders are the only ways to get a dog imo. Puppy mills should not exist in this country. We owe more to dogs as a species than that. Congrats on your rescuing your buddy, I am willing to bet they know you rescued them and love you for it. Anyone who would take that bet doesn't know Goldens very well ;)

Just compare the traits mentioned in the video and if they match, your pup is probably a pure bred and even if its not you are still going to love him the same way you do right? :)

Hey Eman, it's fine. He is just a puppy. Golden Retriever Puppy looks almost like Labrador puppies. His fur will get bigger and tail will become fluffier once he becomes an adult (1 year old).
They will get their feathers at about 6 months , mine did and his tail was not fluffy at all when he was little

Call the breeder and ask for the pedigree. Did you register the puppy with AKC? Are the parents registered with AKC?
Well usually breeders provide you with an AKC of the pup you just adopted but maybe it would have been misplaced. So just call the breeder and ask for the certificate and if the breeder refuses to provide you that than maybe there's a chance that your golden is not a pure bred.

I have a mixed golden retriever, his habits are exactly the same, what you have defined in one of your videos but he is without any coat because his mother was of a different breed.
Oh okay, its probably because he has inherited his personality from his father.

If the tail is little bit curved, then there probably is no issue but as said in the video if it is completely curved than either your dog is a mix breed or your doggo is going through hemivertebrae (a sign of a congenital deformity of the spine’s vertebrae) Please if you get time, try showing it to your vet and follow their further instructions!
