      My impression of Lee Chong Wei's serves were often very similar to Nishimoto's. If none of the umpires found any issue with his serves, the receiver should move on and make adjustments for his readiness. Service motion variations are the grey areas that are part of badminton for a long time, it's not something that just happened now.

      I was watching in the Danish TV and definitely on Anders side. Can clearly see Nishimoto serving the moment Anders looked up. Wasn't really aware that there was a controversy towards Anders until I watched this podcast. I would have thought if there is any it would be towards Nishimoto.

      Not trying to point out to anyone, but Nishimoto was undeniably looking for those little opportunities when serving to get point quicker & easier. It also happened in the finals against CTC. No idea why he finds the need to do so as he plays very, very well.

    Akane won her first title in Japan Open 2013, at the age of 16, making her the youngest ever Super Series winner. She is also the first Japanese to win Japan Open title in all categories, and also the first Japanese to make it to the world no 1 in the single department. She was only 20 then.
    Since then she has collected 20 titles, including all 4 Super 1000 titles, China, Indonesia, All England Open, and Super Series Final, the only active WS player who managed to do this. She is also the only player in history who won two Junior World Championship and two World Championship back to back.
    And her most recent achievement is winning WC and Japan Open back to back, the only player that played all 10 matches and won them all. It's crazy how overlooked she is in comparison to other big names despite the crazy list of achievement and history she made. I really appreciate you two for mentioning her as she is my most favorite badminton player.

Example Greysia Polii (ex WD) no world champs title, uber cup or super 1000 title. But 1 Olympics gold medal. She becomes a national hero. Her name becoming an arena name in Jakarta. The GOAT player from Indonesia: Hendra Setiawan (MD). All title: Olympics, Thomas cup, world champion, BWF WTF, Asian games, SEA Games, all England, super 1000,750,500,300, Junior world champ (only minus sudirman Cup)

    I think Gill has acted professionally. She gives compliments to the two players very fair. But maybe Anders is too special for Gill that she remembers him more in all the controversies 😂😜
    It is very difficult to define whether a player is ready or not to receive a serve. Therefore the umpire must be a firm figure in deciding what happens on the court.
    I think changing the rhythm of the game is an option. there are players who want to keep the rhythm of the game by wanting the game to start immediately. There are also those who want to change the rhythm by delaying the game to gain the focus again.
    It's very rudiculous if the umpire can't give a straight talk to the players because they don't speak English.
    It's really nice to hear the match reaction of the Semifinal match between Anders vs Kenta 😀

    Great talk from HK for being diplomatic regarding the pretty sensitive topic of unsportsmanship behavior about AA. It’s pretty obvious the trick comes to play when a player is facing other player they perceived as stronger. For example AA vs VA in All England 2021, VA vs Ginting in Malaysia Master 2022. Their delay was caught by the comentator, it’s too obvious. If I’m not mistaken Steen commented on this topic as well during one of Kim/Kong match in the World Championship 2022. For me the tricks/delay take out some of the excitement of watching. I just hope AA could own his mistake instead of generalizing that you cannot expect all players to follow the rules 100%.

One thing is that I completely agree with HK that the umpire was just lost on that game, he didn't know what was going on. I also didn't think that it was "really controversial" and AA was terrible. Kenta did also the same "trick" with Jojo and CTC. He just also unsupportive. Well, I guess every players have their ways to survive.

    And as for the 'controvery', I did not watch the match but I get what Anders was saying about the 'small' games, or psychological games as how my badminton buddies and I call them. Players do that all the time and if you get thrown off by such things, you end up dancing to the opponent's tune.

    I like Anders, I enjoy watching him play I think he's an amazing player, definitely top 3 when at his best.
    I will defend Gill Clarks though ; I watched the game live without the sound and had the exact same reaction. Especially for that particular serve where Anders moves but gives the shuttle back to Nishimoto, pretending he wasn't ready. Imagine this situation happens in the World Championship final or the Olympics final, at money time... As an opponnent I would obviously be angry. I will always say that these kind of "tricks", to steal one or two points, is a child's game or a loser attitude. You're not good enough to win straight ? Then be better, end of story.

    I understand nishimoto waiting and serve. when i play some people have such a long routine to get back on track , and as a speedy guy i just want the point to be played.
    Nishimoto serving is like he is serving like he is doing normally . It's you task to be ready as soon as you lay down your hand . Just like a Red light turning green.
    If you give me that sight i would have serve right away just like Nishimoto, not trying to do a trick , just is you are exaushted and it's like a ring bell in a boxing match . THere is no "gentlemen's delay".

    Mad respect to HK to talk about AA and Nishimoto issue with a respectful tone when talking about it if you know what I mean.
    In this case imo both AA and Nishimoto have their own wrong doings but AA is much more clearer not-ready trick which kinda annoyed most of the viewers like us as it is obviously easier to notice that tricks. Well sometimes Nishimoto did serve really2 early but not very noticed by most of the viewer, they just like "ohh another service fault, lets try that again."
    Then in respond AA did with his not-ready trick which upset most of the viewer and also commentator Gill Clark itself. Which is why whole of this controversy happened. No offense AA. Its just we have to be honest about it..

    • @elements8665
      @elements8665 Рік тому +4

      But I have to agree with HK again regarding the umpire not knowing what is happening when AA vs Nishimoto. When nishimoto vs jonatan christie, kenta literally got a yellow card because of his serve issue. And jonatan just play along with it or either complains it and everything went normal afterwards.
      But in Antonsen case the way he responds is quite interesting which is why all this bad sportmanship topic happened.

    • @sunshinefromhell
      @sunshinefromhell Рік тому +3

      Yea, it's annoying watching these kinds of cheap 'tricks' like Shetty with his serve delays. Both players were being annoying. Also funny how AA says he's not wrong then admits he pretended not to be ready. Come on. But definitely, the BWF umpires need to be better and it is really weird how they do not have discussions with the players.
      Also interesting how AA says Gillian is biased against him but does not mention how Danish commentators are probably biased towards him, a Danish player.

    Always enjoy listening to you guys.
    After watching Anders' semi-final I was hoping to hear it straight from the man himself here, so this was fantastic. I have to say that I understand it from the tactical point of view and all the mind games some players like to indulge in. Plus Anders' does like to use the psychological warfare and gamesmanship quite a bit as part of his arsenal. As does Nishimoto, which inevitably led to a bit of drama in commentary and amongst the fans. But the cool thing is it did not seem to result in any animosity between the two players - I guess they both understand that whole mind game element is part of getting that tiny edge in a game of rather small margins.

  • @HokKan
    @HokKan Рік тому +1

    Anders, here's a good trick for you. I haven't seen any player use it yet, but I think it'll work. If you ever need a break or just want to change the shuttle, but have a strong hunch that your opponent or umpire will say no, just pretend to accidentally step on the shuttle. Maybe you're walking backwards and didn't see it. Guaranteed they'll let you change the squished shuttle.

  • @Deincrosse
    @Deincrosse Рік тому +3

    On the incident, I unfortunately think Kenta is still playing within the 'implicitly agreed rules', I assume there is no clear indication on the BWF rule book that says what defines 'player being ready to receive', so currently us as audience interpret a player as being ready as soon as he puts his hand down, whereas a more sensible ready situation would probably be a couple seconds after. This is a highly debatable gray area if players did an instant serve the moment the opponent puts his hand down, but I think Anders did himself no favor here by trying to exploit flick serves that were out, pretending he was ready to take those.
    The situation is somewhat similar to players raising racket to block a net kill, it looks wrong but as long as the racket did not get in the way of the kill, it is still going to count, and despite the long history of that players would still try to complain about it when it happens. I wouldn't blame the umpire or Gill too much for taking a stance in this situation, I think most people just aren't used to seeing controversial situations like this in badminton, and BWF is not helping by being more clear in the rules.

  • @Punchsavee
    @Punchsavee Рік тому +3

    maybe intriducing short clock (next point must be play 25 second after the last point). tennis introduce this 3 or 4 years back and it reduce time wasting problem. maybe badminton could be more flexible like starting the clock after the staff mopped the floor etc. Other than that both players must be ready within this time period. otherwise, player whole waste time receive verbal warning for the first time. Then followed by yellow card, red card and so on like normal badminton warning protocol, if it happen several times.

    Amazing talk! It was interesting you mentioned the small mind games happening between rallies, espcially around service. The server decides when to serve. The receiver decides when to be ready to receive. In a 100% pure gentleman game, the players will communicate their intentions clearly. This is not the case in Nishimoto vs Anders.
    The server can communicate intention to serve by leaning forward, aiming with this racket, etc. Nishimoto would instead have arms by his side, adjust his feet, and then serving when you are barely ready on purpose. The receiver can only respond by making it clear that he is not ready, as Anders mentioned.
    Not sure if the umpire should get involved here. Should the umpire decide when a player is ready to recieve? Can the umpire reprimand a player for serving too fast? (Umpire actually gave yellow card to nishimoto against christie)

    That's insane that the umpire can't speak English,🤯 it's important when the players want to have a short discussion with the umpire, so that the umpire knows what's going on and find a solution to control the match. There were very interesting topics discussed. Also about umpire job, I thought umpires have to have a license to serve as judge especially at such big events and that means - knowing exactly what's going on on the court. Only one reason can explain kind of lack of skill of the umpire - strict COVID rules in Japan. Also would be very interesting to discuss that topic of "little games" as Anders called it. I remember once our coaches gave us a lecture about little tricks to play, some of them sounded quite unsportmanlike :)

    K.Nishimoto 50% fault due to sometimes serve too fast which lead to

    Commentator Gill Clark stated it more clearly which lead to
    Viewers were upset by A.A action which lead to

    Many badminton fans creating topic regarding AA Bad unsportmanship which lead to

    Glad to see AA back in good form, congratulations on reaching semi-final in Japan Open but a little bit disappointed on the excuses been said in this episode...(I'm actually fine with what's AA did on court, but surprised that AA explained this way in TBE which is not really professional)
    30:00 Danish TV definitely will be supporting Danish player, every broadcaster from their country will do the same and some fans also will angry with the umpire rather than the player...I will say the umpire is too kind to AA, the umpire gave so many chances to AA. HK is doing a good job in this episode on explaining in neutral way based on the situation.
    Anders you might not getting ready for some shots, but I don't think for EVERY shots... one of the Nishimoto's flick serves, from the camera can see that you're ready at that time, perhaps you are out of focus, so pretending you are not ready. yes, umpire should do his job giving a point to Nishimoto, but he didn’t. but just don’t keep saying the fault is made by umpire, and you’re innocent at all, come on, u’re adult, not junior under 18.. be professional

    New BWF schedule for 2023 publish and that totally crazy schedule. Can the federation or players do objection about the schedule to BWF?
    To play against home soil player will be uneasy..too much pressure for the opponent,sometimes make opponent angry. As long as not clear regulation about how long delay the games or how long players can serve..is it 6 seconds as we can see in last Jakarta tournament😆 then so many things can happen on court which can show unfair for the opponent

    UNSPORTMANSHIP BEHAVIOUR? Hmmmm, ... .
    Everybody knew Chinese players were lacked of that, especially from SINGLE DICIPLINES. No, no, I'm not talking about Taiwan players, or Malay-Chinese or Chindo. I'm addressing about the China Badminton Federation and singles athletes.
    1) The unsportman Shi Yuqi, retired when he lost 4-20 to Momota. The case with Shi Yuqi participation in #BWC2022, the federation are involved, I believed.
    2) He Bingjao gave Chen Yufei a WO? Chen Yufei got 2 WO advance from Chinese players?
    3) Lu Guangzu early celeberation and mockery towards Anthony Ginting and Lee Zii Jia. He ended up losing from both. Hillarious. Oddly satisfying.
    4) Special MD case, Li Junhui. When he was pocketed and targeted by Minions, Endo-Watanabe, Goh V Shem or Daddies. Oh man, this dude was a total joke.
    Other than Li Junhui, no issues addressed toward Chinese Doubles squad. Most of them are friendly and have sportmanship attitude towards opponents and fans. Chen/Jia are beast in court, outside the court, they're like your local club players who smiles and chats and waves at opponents and fans. It's shown by Dongping and Yaqiong too while comforting Arisa Higashino who cried after back to back losing the finals at home soil in two consecutive weeks.
    It's funny when Chinese netizens irritated the way Marin shouts during a match. But then they irritated more about their players unsportmanship behaviour, especially, Yufei, Bingjao, Yuqi and Junhui. Oh, I remember reading from Badmintalk about Chinese netizens went riot toward Li Junhui after he disrespected "Those Old Devils (Ahsan/Setiawan)" by staring at them with anger after killing the net against Setiawan.

    AA, to think the negative comment was fired up by Gill's commenting was underestimating the audience capability to grasp what happened on court. The tricks played repeatedly. By you and Nishimoto. It was replayed from different angles multiple times. It was so obvious. Cant believe the umpire was so blind.
    That match with Nishimoto, was the dirtiest I have seen live from MS discipline with both players tried to get easy points playing tricks. Shame.

    @HokKan Рік тому +6

    Even when I had only watched Gill's commentary on the match, I felt that she wasn't being very fair. Maybe because what Nishimoto did was more subtle, so she probably didn't even notice it. I can see what Anders' point is. If the opponent is pulling dirty tricks to get an advantage and the umpire isn't doing anything about it, you have to take matters into your own hands.

    • @HokKan
      @HokKan Рік тому +3

      Granted, 2 wrongs don't make a right. But if the umpire is letting it slide, you can only see yourself losing due to unfairness. I think what Anders should have done, like what Lin Dan would do, is play dirty tricks back in a subtle way. To be a top professional, you have to be good at playing the dirty games. That means they have to be dirty, but also undetectable.

    • @HokKan
      @HokKan Рік тому +2

      There will always be unfair and incompetent umpires in any sports. That's why professional athletes have to learn to play dirty games, and to play it well. It's a very important part of the sport, and the best players are very good at it. Taufik's 3rd game against LCW in the Paris WC of 2010 (after mid game interval) comes to mind. Pulling every trick up his sleeve to disrupt LCW's flow and to prolong the duration of his lead when he knew LCW was very nervous.
      You can't compete in this game professionally with the assumption that umpires will catch these little things. You have to learn dirty tricks, and play them well without the umpire catching. Anders didn't play his well, it was too obvious. Nishimoto didn't play his well either. Doing the same service trick way too many times, in the same manner, in the same tournament against 3 different opponents. It's not a good look for him either.

    On Points 2x 21 or 5x 11 have the same problems. A player has no need to invest in a game once he/she is behind by a significant margin. The players know, the umpire knows, the audience knows, the youtuber knows.. its a waste of time for everybody dragging a 8:0 game to a painful 21:2 or something. I would like to see a 1x41 tournament where players can't netflix'n chill mid match once they are behind in a game. It would be peddl to the meddl for both players the whole match long.

      The WT ranking is not a prestige ranking like the actual world ranking, and it's been put to place to make another ranking that will determine who will play at the world tour finals. It means nothing whether you end up as 1 or 8 on that list. You won't get seeded from it. Pranoy has done well, but he hasn't won anything this year, yet he's been the most productive participating in most tournaments. He's not the world no.1, That's still Axelsen by a huge margin.
      So far the only actual No1 India has ever had in MS is Srikanth Kidambi, even though that only lastet for one week. However, that hasn't stopped him from calling himself "former no 1" in his twitter description...... I mean, he's not lying, but then again....
