As someone who has never taken a dance class in her life, I send my deepest sympathies to every single ballerina who gets told, "that's so cute!" upon announcing what style of dance they do.
The only time I've had that reaction is when a parent tells me their two or three year old is in ballet because what's not cute about a group of little girls in tutus dancing their little hearts out
So...for the non-dancers among us [points to self] that are occasionally confused but still *love* these videos ....what exactly makes someone's feet "good"? 🤣
When you point your feet, the shin and the top of your foot makes either a straight line or a curve. This depends on ankle flexibility. For ballet the straight line is workable. Prettier is if the foot is curved a little further. If the ankle doesn't have enough flexibility (the curve would then be concave) it is considered less pretty and it's also much hard to go en pointe because you have to support the whole weight from the muscles in your shins. The problem is that ankle flexibility is 95% what you're born with. The effect of safe stretching routines on ankle flexibility is minimal. And we try to avoid the unsafe methods :-)
(From a former dancer) The amount of ankle extension/rotation, arch of the foot, pointed toes (not crunched) strength + flexibility, as well as your legs being positioned so that your feet are in the right spot. Hope that helps :)
Hey Josephine! I am teaching myself how to dance in different styles including ballet, with a little help from my mom and aunt (ex dancers) your videos make me feel so much inspiration and make me feel super proud of myself in a way. Thanks. :)
Omgosh! My husband has amazing feet and turn out and he has never danced a day in this life! Its so unfair. The pirouette waiting for the microwave is so me, except I don't look that amazing. Not anymore. 😉 this was fun. Can't wait to see what's next. 😁
2:09 this diagram is scarily accurate. My shoe never slid off in rehearsal for a dance I did, yet every time I actually performed the dance, it did and I had to fix it
I started ballet as a 20yr old for a few years but I became obsessed. Oh, guys with arches-it's like when they have amazingly long lashes-why, oh WHY? it's wasted on them! These were hilarious. Even as a non dancer any more. The dog one was 🤣🤣🤣. I read a lot about the topic-autobiographies etc, and it sounds so familiar. And yes, please-LOVE your reaction videos. Other than being a shoe fitter, reaction vids are also your calling! X
My brother is one of those men with long, gorgeous lashes... and when he doesn't shave his head, he also have beautiful, blonde curls. Every mother always would lament why their daughters weren't as beautiful as my mother's son. I still find it hilarious.
@@notme7944 hi, not me but my friend started ballet when she was like 12 (she did it a bit as like a little kid but not much) and went en pointe at about 14 I think
Or the ones with flat turn out? They give you that 'what, you mean this is meant to be hard?' look when you make them stand in 5th and you just really need to smack something like RIGHT NOW.
I am simple creature. I see, I click. I especially love these videos. You have the best facial expressions! I will actually put down whatever I'm working on to actually watch, not just listen, to your videos.
My hubby is one of those non-dancer people with crazy feet made for dance. And it pisses me off, cause my feet suck. And our 14 y/o daughter has feet somewhere between both our feet...she is putting her "better than mine" feet to good use as a dancer.
My mom never let me do ballet because of money problems, which led me to teach myself through UA-cam as an adult. (This past year) I still have dreams of joining a studio, but until then I’ll just be happy that I can relate to most of the memes!
Hi Josephine! I love watching you and listening to you react. It's honestly hilarious. Can you react to Leap! Not the whole thing (Duh, it's two hours long) But just some clips from it. Please?
Josephine, you are so stinking cuuuute! I feel like we should be BFFs ♥️ I love your comments and sweet reactions☺️. I also love that you have this platform to teach about the importance of a well-fitted pointe shoe. As a mom of a growing girl who loves ballet, I am so thankful I found you - as I’ve watched many of your videos to get info on making sure as she (and her feet) grows and changes, we are getting the correct shoes for her to dance in! 🩰🤍
My husband has a natural turnout. Like he walks naturally turned out and mine naturally turns in. I worked so hard my turnout and sometimes he'll stand in a perfect first position. It's been 10 years since I've danced ballet but still makes me seethe.
True story: My Intro to Theater professor in college was also the movie critic on our local ABC affiliate’s news program. His name was Arthur Ballet and yes, he pronounced the T. When I signed up for the class, his surname was listed in the class catalog. My first thought was, “Oh, the instructor’s name is Ballet (the dance).” Then I walked in on the first day to see the movie critic I’d watched on TV for the previous couple of years since moving to the state. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t put two and two together and gotten that the professor was the same guy id been watching on the news.
i got told by my dance teacher last night, when we were doing high kicks on our tippy toesy, that i had great legs when i do it and i was like😍🥰😍😁😆🤑🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭
My schools history teacher/soccer coach was trying to talk to me about sports. I told him I didn’t really have any interest in sports besides what I do, dance. His “that’s a sport?!” reaction flabbergasted me. I asked him if he wanted to do barre with me one day and he backpedaled reeeaaal quick. Wish people in my area respected dance more
My friends would always make fun of me for the "I danced to this!" And the "this was in last year's recital, I loved this dance!" And the marking the dance with my hands while the song I danced to 3 years ago plays on the radio
I remember a dude in middle school told me that dance wasn’t a sport and that you only do little silly moves so I made him do an arabesque while correcting every single thing he did and he eventually gave up😂
Me randomly spotting beautiful arches and manhandling people’s feet without asking “don’t sickle!” *SLAPS * “don’t crunch the toes!” * SLAP * They’re like what are you doing? Oh, nothing….shhhh.
I’m 14, in grade 6 (RAD) and I’ve been doing ballet for about 11 years. I’ve been wanting to go en pointe for about a year now but my teacher hasn’t said anything to me, is it something I ask about or do I wait for my teacher to come to me about it?
I used to work in a grocery store and I did the weekly overnight price change shift. I absolutely did practise ballet all over those aisles! Gotta move along the aisle anyway and nobody's watching...
I swear, before I watched these videos, I never had foot envy. I’m not a dancer, but I used to run, and my husband had reconstructive foot surgery, so I pay attention to how people walk and run, usually it ends up with them supinating pretty hard. The other day on a walk with my husband, I saw someone running who wasn’t pronating or supinating at all, she had perfect feet and I actually said out loud “oh my god her feet are beautiful” and my husband just kind of looked at me weird while I try to rapidly explain that no, I’m not going to collect her feet, I just appreciate them.
Wait Wait wait WHAT?! 12X your body weight?!?! I need clarification lol. I just started pointe work as an adult and I'm a curvy girl and I don't get how it's 12x your weight....
When we went to lunch, the teacher on lunch duty said that we were too loud and everybody had to be quiet. I completely and utterly embarrassed my friend because I was marking a tap combo with my hands on the table since I had a helper class (I’m like the assistant to the teacher for this class) that night. She’s whispers to me “WHAT ARE YOU DOING! STOP IT! EVERYONES LOOKING AT YOU” and I just said that I don’t care when I wanted to to say “ITS THE SHIM-SHAM-SHIMMY (insert her name) COME ON WHATS WRONG WITH YOU!”
so I have EDS and banana feet x1000. I did Irish dancing for 12 years until it near crippled me in pain, but also because I'm so uncoordinated I only lasted 3 lessons of ballet before my mum pulled me out because she nearly wet herself laughing so hard at me "stomping around like a three legged elephant". my ego has never recovered. I wish I could give you my feet for the amount of pain they've caused lol
I cannot tell you how many times I practice pirouette turns (just terrible singles) while cooking or waiting for the microwave to finish. And I really need to incorporate more lefts because I suck even worse on that side. And chainé turns or pique for days in the grocery aisle. Don’t get me started if I hear Sugarplum if it’s Nutcracker season. Or The Charlie Brown dance haha!
My husband has perfect 180 degree turnout and I lowkey despise him for it. (for context, I struggled with turnout my entire life and have inwardly rotated shinbones so I look turned in when my hips are decently turned out.)
Ok so I NEVER did ballet I looked at it and said, 'Nope not doing that' and signed up for hip-hop. (Later on I did musical theater and Lyrical) but like, I kinda relate to some of these.
that last "microwave one"-- I haven't had a dance class in over 15 years and I *still* will do plies and little tap dances waiting for my food to cook at work... it is just engrained forever now, after 18 years of taking dance classes... lolz. I relate.
I have good feet but my Mom just told me I was too tall for ballet, put me in hip hop instead when I was 11 (after I begged to do dance) and I was very uncomfortable shaking my butt, dropped out of hip hop and my Mom said it must be cause I don’t like dance. 4 years later I finally convinced her I wasn’t too tall and no dance studio in my area had beginner classes in Jazz or Ballet if you were over 11. I am now newly a adult and some day, once I have the money, still want to try to take dance lessons sometime.
I used to do ballet since I was 4 then I went to a one that had competitions at 5 and then I did it weekly until I was 10 now I’m 11 and I quit because I found it a bit boring and scary because I’m pretty shy in classes and school and I want to do gymnastics which I did until COVID-19 should I do gymnastics again tho

I hate it
