Ah, nothing like a nice claggy Valenta start up. Part of the legendary mystique of the 125 was when one flew past with the Valenta power point screaming away like a banshee #GoodTimes
This is really cool. Having spent the majority of my life travelling on HSTs, these are very nostalgic indeed. I am very jealous you get to work with such incredible locomotives, and I wish the 125 heritage group all the luck in the world. Beautiful sounds!
Here would be a interesting first mk3s with a power car on one end and sir Nigel gresley on the other, you could walk through from a steam cab through the train into a 125 cab!
43071 one of our regular visitors to the Oak (Old Oak Common) Depot prior to the Depot closing. Driving these power cars, and/or associated sets around the Depot was always a pleasure since several of us techs were trained and licenced to move our trains, on depot, when we were either short of shed drivers or, more often, a hell of a lot of shunts/movements needed carrying out.
She was on the GWM for some time before she retired, definitely one if the most well traveled one as it’s worked on the ECML, XC and Midland sections as well as the Great Western! Sounds like an honour to have drove these fine machines when they were in service even if it was in a depot, sounds like a busy procedure but must have been great!
You really might think that for engines that were installed at the same time as the MTUs, Paxman might have managed to produce something that started much better from cold and produced rather less clag, wouldn't you. It's not really a noticeable advance on the Valenta (though it sounds very like it, which is a point in its favour)
It is certainly a strange one, in service it was not to bad for the VP185 as the engine block would retain some heat after being switched off. However starting them from cold it creates a bit of a problem. In the future we plan to fit a Pre Heater to our VP185s to reduce engine wear on cold starts which will increase the life span of the engine. The MTU fires up with no drama at all! Very solid engines with hardly any emissions. The MTU in 43071 is in very good condition considering it has been stored away and switched off for ages! and when we started it for the first time threw up no faults at all. Thank you for watching the video!
I would be interested to see if the MTU can start without heating up to near running temperature, I imagine if it can it will also produce clouds of in burnt fuel in the process of run up!
Agreed. The VP185 was however an improvement on Valenta regarding fuel economy, lubrication oil & Diesel black smoke emissions and they were about one Tonne lighter each engine, if I remember correctly. Having watched a number of XPT videos the lack of blue smoke is particularly evident. Unfortunately as the engines aged they did start to produce black smoke but oil control was still good.
@@jerryhill7508 We don’t have any plans to start 43071 without the pre heater as yet. The preheater saves us a lot of grief when it comes to mechanics, but if it happens one day I will be sure to capture it on video would be interesting to see!
@@Martindyna Indeed the VP185 had a few problems when they entered service but they have proved themselves over the years to be more efficient than their predecessor, a key engine in the history of the HST and we’re glad to have them preserved and in working order!
OK I feel old - seeing 125s in to preservation does that to a fellow. How I used to laugh at those old duffers saying the same things about their silly old steam locos lol. And then, a Paxman Valenta engined unit... oh that scream.
Indeed they are also still in service with Cross Country and GWR on their "Castle Sets". These ones are preserved here at the Colne Valley Railway and will now run in preservation.
May I ask what the deal is with the EMR branded 125 please?. I thought that all the valentas had been removed so why does this 125 still have one?. Was this reinstated after preservation or did EMR not bother upgrading their HST's?. Just curious as the Scotrail (ex GWR) units are loud and smokey but nothing like this! Lol.
Let’s be honest, we are all here for the HST sounds
That MTU looks absolutely immaculate. You'd think it was a brand new engine just put in
Cylinders - "C'mon everyone - join in!"
😂😂
Superb video. Enjoyed hearing the power cars being started up. :)
Cheers mate glad you enjoyed :)
Fantastic video great to hear the MTU and VP185 start up
Thank you glad you enjoyed the video they sounded nice from the engine room cams 👍
HSTs are the greatest trains to exist they look so beautiful and sound so amazing with their loud engines ❤️
Great to see these beauty's have found a good home and hopefully a long life, thank you
Still sound good decades later and stil don't look out of place give me this and classic British made locos any day
Great video, always loved the VP185 HST'S and MTU'S
Thank you! I agree both engines are nice examples to preserve 👍
Nice to see these old ladies 71 & 73 still going strong...just a pity they can't do what they used to....125mph...❤️🎉
Surprised 071 started up that easily. (Probably because a. It's an MTU and b. You preheated the engine block)
Icon. Great work. thank you.
Looking good for a heritage.

Thank you for watching indeed th VP185 does sound great! Thank you all going well for this years running seasson!
Truly excellent footage, Lewis. Very well done!
Thank you great video you have yourself too!
What a glorious racket!
I really miss this stock. Loved hearing expansion joints again.
Would be great if I could film with the railway and these old girls and maybe even have a drive of one great to see that they are safe!
We have our first running day on April 16th and we also plan to have driver experiences available in the future 👍👍
brings back memories. Clag. OK, Bad but nostalgic
It sure does!
Forgot to put your finger on the ATP button when you keyed in for the engine start lol. Driven this power car many times. Great video.
I didn’t actually realise how much I miss travelling behind the old girls
We miss hearing them thundering down the mainline too, all in all they were great to travel behind!

Thank you very much, should be a great day!

Ye old Beauties. Love em
If you wanna ride on an HST come to Scotland Scotrail have a fleet of them going between Edinubrgh Aberdeen , Inverness

Nice class 43s 👍👍👍😎
Nice! Thought I had subbed before but seems not, done so now! PS What camera(s) do you use?
No worries Sans! I only use my phone camera for the videos 👍
Hasn’t anyone considered fitting a preheated to those Valenta engines?
Awesome video! How long does it take to heat up the block on average, before firing up?
Cheers! It depends on the temperature of the day, as we are now in spring it only takes about an hour to pre heat 71s MTU 👍
Will these all be put back to there original livery's
In the future we plan to have them re painted 43071 will be the first to go in for a repaint
does the pre heater for the engine raise the temperature of the oil as well? and is the engine primed with oil before starting?
So which one is the valenta?
@@steventhornton4716 neither no valentas have been in production power cars since 2011
Where was this filmed?
Hi Roy, this was filmed at the Colne Valley Railway in Essex 👍
This thing startup sound like emd and cat engine but it mtu

This is not a valenta, no power cars have had valentas in them since the early 2010s. 43073 is fitted with a Paxman VP185
73 full of diesel fumes....😂😂😂
MTU’s. Shame
