      99% of DJ's use powered speakers which all have xlr's out which then would go into your zoom. Carry a couple of xlr cables with you in your gear bag for these instances.

      Jason Vong Hello Friend. can you do a review of the new sigma art objectives for sony E? Are they equally accurate for continuous video autofocus compared whith sony objectives? Do they make noise in continuous video autofocus? etc? thank you, master.

      Hey Jason, so to be clear, I really just need the "Zoom ZH1 H1 Handy Portable Digital Recorder" to tape to a loudspeaker, and I guess you use the "Platinum Tools Industrial BongoTies " to tie the microphone to the speaker? The other products you linked to are for other purposes and are not necessary for the wedding hack, correct?
      Newbie question, but how do you transfer the data from the Zoom ZH1 to your editing computer? Does it need to be plugged into a camera during the recording process, or can I just upload the sound files from the recorder to my computer after I make the recording?

  • @Eric_Thompson
    @Eric_Thompson 6 років тому +7

    Great idea for a backup. For better results, try taping the mic slightly off center, right where the diaphragm meets the center cone. It’s the same if you’ve ever mic’ed a guitar amp. The end result is a slightly better frequency response, and less “hollow” sounding recording.

    this is actually an awesome tip!
    I did an event about a month ago, where they had 5 speakers and a host, so I had to hookup my recorder to the main audio mixer
    the audio mixing guy didn't pay attention to my recorder and I ended up with blown out audio.
    So i'm for sure using this trick next time 😌🙌

      thankfully all of mine has been chill.... However, I was the dbag at one wedding... As I got my last shot of the night, I accidentally took a misstep and fell of the stage but in the process, grabbed his speaker down with me. I don't think he liked me very much after that.

    This is why you patch your audio recorder directly into the line-out port ON THE SPEAKERS. Crisp, clear audio every single time and you avoid any mistakes made by the DJ.

    Warning about H1 - never go below level 20, because anything lower than that is just digital attenuation. That means that if you have clipping at level 20, you will also have clipping at level 10 or level 0, even though H1 might not blink red LED for clipping. I learned that the hard way. If it is too loud at level 20, you must move microphone away from the speaker.

    • @JasonVong
      @JasonVong  6 років тому

      whoa! good tip! never knew! nothing bad has happened yet but I will be more mindful!

    • @mbaksa
      @mbaksa 6 років тому +1

      I had an issue once, when connecting Zoom H1 to a mixer at a wedding reception. The sound guy said that he cannot change volume on the only output he can give me, so I had to lower the level on H1 to something about 13 or 11. Clipping wasn't clearly apparent then (red LED was not blinking), although I heard that sound wasn't totally OK when listening it (it was hard to judge on site, because of all the noise and loud sound exposure). When I was editing the video, H1 audio had lots of nasty clipping. After that I went to find out why, and after that I have never-ever used it below 20. Actually, I mostly use it at level 37, because somebody found out that it is a sweet-spot - at that level it has the lowest noise from internal preamplifier. So even if it makes sound a little quieter than I would have wanted, I still just set it at 37, and I'm done - I know I'll get the best possible sound at that setting. When I need lesser sensitivity, I just use Zoom H6, which doesn't have that horrible digital attenuation, and also has a 20 dB pad, so it can receive a pretty loud signal.

    I can't even count the times I had at least one audio source fail and relied on a backup. In general, most DJs I have dealt with are "alright", some have been great and actually have taught me a lot about audio and others have been the complete opposite - total idiots or assholes. Backups, backups and more backups lol!

      Larry Marshall - If you would descricbe the sound quality (and self-noise) of a Instamic, what other device would it compare similar to (at the same practical distance), or just your opinion about it’s sound?
      Any idea which of these or other would be close or the closest:
      LAVALIER MICS > SmartLav+, Tascam Lavalier (Tascam DR-10), Sennheiser MKE2,
      ZOOM RECORDERS > Zoom H1(n), Zoom H5/6 with XYmic,
      SONY RECORDERS > ICD-TX650, (new) Sony ICD TX-800, Sony ICD-UX560, Sony ICD-SX2000,
      Sennheiser’s Memory mic.

    @Jason Vong, I know this is off topic, but since you are into the Sony FF which I am actually going to switch to from Panasonic, I am going to get the a7iii once they are in stock. I am in the market for some lenses and for sure going to get the 70-200mm f2.8 GM, but curious on your thoughts on the coming Sigma emount fullframe art lens www.sigma-global.com/en/lenses/cas/service/se_mount/. Those look really attractive, but I am not a pro and see there are three focal sizes. Any thoughts on the lens coming and what about choosing a good focal size; e.g. 24mm, 50mm, and 85mm. I do mostly travel, but love astrophotography which I know you don't talk about.

    Any thoughts about the differences between that and taping the lav mic?
