    Wedding day audio is no joke, and can be the tipping point between a perfect wedding film and something you aren't too proud of. So, if you're looking for how to capture the best audio for wedding videos then you've come to the right place!
    Weddings are fast paced and not entirely in your control, so it is essential that you know exactly what you need, and when you need it, when recording audio at weddings.
    In this video I go through every single piece of what I consider the best audio gear for weddings that I use every single time. Not only that but I break down the wedding day into multiple sections and give you my gameplan for high quality audio for wedding videography This includes what I use, when I use it, and what the source of audio is.
    In the first section of the day I typically use an on camera microphone like the rode videomic pro to capture ambient audio during the prep portion. The only exception to this rule is if the bride and groom choose to do a letter reading. In that scenario I will be sure to use a lavalier mic to capture high quality audio.
    I use a near identical setup for the first look, and also use lav mics during the ceremony, though those typically serve as a backup to the main feed I get from the venue.
    Next, my main goal is to capture perfect speeches at weddings so I will get a feed from the source as well as a lav mic or a hidden mic on a mic stand. In my opinion this is the best way of how to record speeches at a wedding.
    Again, clean audio for weddings is what makes great wedding films as great as they are. Be sure to plan accordingly and capture great audio at weddings! I hope this video shows you how to capture perfect audio for wedding films and let me know if you have any questions in the comments!

    Inspirational video, thanks! I might be filming a wedding soon with a Sony AX53 and a Rode VideoMicro attached to it. Both me and the couple are on a budget, so this is all we're going to go with... what sort of quality do you think we'll be able to achieve? Many thanks if you can answer!

    this guy said "ONLY $600 - 800". I think I clicked the wrong video, aimed at the wrong tax bracket lol

    • @BobbyBurns
      @BobbyBurns  4 роки тому

      Lol if you think $600 is a lot for a complete audio solution for your business you might be in the wrong field. Photo / Video gear is expensive and you need a decent amount for a wedding to do it correctly, that's just the way it goes

    • @diceflawless9115
      @diceflawless9115 4 роки тому +3

      @@BobbyBurns I mean... of course, the more you spend, the better results you get. But you dont need to spend $800 on audio equipment to pull off a good wedding video, starting off

    • @BobbyBurns
      @BobbyBurns  4 роки тому

      @@diceflawless9115 I would say sure you don't NEED to spend 800....though I said $600-$800 I think and those prices have come down since making this video. But here's how I look at it. To adequately mic up 2-3 people, get a feed in any scenario from a venue, dj, etc and get decent ambient audio (if that's something you like to use) you are looking at $400-500ish anyways. And that is really what is needed to capture a wedding adequately. If you can't do the things above then you are missing things. If you don't care about ambient audio then scratch the on camera mic and you can take that number down a bit. At that point, for just a couple hundred more you can have devices that are newer, smaller, and have features that make your life a heck of a lot easier / cover you a bit more from mistakes. Can you get good audio with the bare minimum setup, absolutely. But you will also likely run into issues more often, make people wear bulkier recorders, etc.

      @@BobbyBurns Well this is just my opinion. But I just grabbed a Diety D3 Pro ($200), And Im debating between a Zoom H1 ($80), with a Purple Panda Lav Mic ($30) or a Tascsm DL10 ($175). Thats it! Thats lile $350 - $400ish including batteries and SD cards .
      Again. Just my opinion but if you are starting out and this is your first or second wedding, your clients expectations and budget arent going to be very high. You shouldn't be stacking up on all this equipment if you dont even have the clients yet to pay for it. You should become an expert with the minimal and slowly build up your equipment as your portfolio and client budget grows.
      You dont need multiple recorders. If you have the money, get two tops. But One recorder will pick up bride, groom and priest with decent quality as they will all be standing close to eachother.
      At the reception give that same lav to the best man if he's the only one doing a speech. Or get sound directly from the speaker. Both the zoom and the tascam work great for that. You dont need to tap into the DJs board, which means you dont need to spend a bunch of money on all kinds of cables.
      Your first wedding will be low budget and most likely really small. Why else would they hire a videographer with no experience? There probably wont be a lot of sophistication going on. Keep it simple and dont stress out on your first wedding maxing out credit cards and trying to juggle tons of equipment you barley know how to use.

      @@diceflawless9115 This way to go about it makes a lot of assumptions and works on the basis of everything going smoothly. Is it better than no audio or just on camera audio? Absolutely, I won't argue that. And I understand that everyone starts somewhere. But if you aren't equipped enough to shoot a wedding on your own you should second shoot or rent gear....not charge less and deliver a worse product imo.
      In your scenario you are short one lav mic. The h1 works, I used one for years and years (though imo the dr10l is definitely worth the difference in price for a variety of reasons). A lav mic is not going to pick up the groom, priest, and bride well. It just isn't, and that is if they are standing near each other, which is not always the case. In your reception scenario you should absolutely get a feed form the DJ, which you currently aren't capable of. I would get a recorder for the DJ before relying on an on camera mic like the deity. Not that there is anything wrong with the deity itself but that should be for ambient audio. So, now you can't plug into the DJ board so you mic up the speech giver. I've done this plenty of times as a backup if I didn't trust the dj system but I have never been to a wedding with only one speech. That scenario is just not realistic. And if you only have one lav you have to hold up everything to keep switiching it which is unprofessional.
      Basically what this all boils down to is that while we all start somewhere, we should all be moving the industry forward, trying our best to make our best work and being prepared for most scenarios. Not cutting corners because our clients aren't paying us enough (which by the way is a rate that WE set), and delivering an inferior product.

    Hello Bobby, thanks for the video, i try to keep my gear as compact as possible, so the 2 of the H1N is my best choice (also the rode videomic).. so i can use it as a lavelier mic on the vows.. however, i never tried to plug the H1n to the DJ MIxer Line In, is that possible?, meaning, can it be plugged in the line in with the autolevels on to avoid clipping or i will also need to use an atenuator cable?, if so, how many DB would u say it will be necesary?.. or maybe will be better to use the H1N near the speaker with a very low level setting? what do you think?, i would really love to solve everything with two H1N and a videomic. thanks in advance!

    • @BobbyBurns
      @BobbyBurns  5 років тому

      Thanks for reaching out! Realistically the h1n is not made for that. It sucks to carry more gear, we are always trying to minimize, but at the same time you need to have the right tools for the job. The dr40 is under $100 I think and is pretty small, it's worth the investment. Also if you are looking to be as small of a footprint as possible definitely consider the tascam dr10l. Better quality than the zoom h1 and noticably smaller!

    If you have a Rode Mic Pro and the whole ceremony will be with mics and speakers, will the Rode Mic Pro not be enough to get good audio?
    I also have a Zoom H4N that i would hook up with XLR cable to the sound system as a back up.

    • @BobbyBurns
      @BobbyBurns  4 роки тому

      A rode mic is more for ambient audio than for dialogue. It will not be very good audio. The h4n should be a good main source and if you have the budget I’d put a lav mic on the officiant and groom as a backup. Also the h4n can’t take line levels so make sure to bring an attenuator just in case

    Shooting my first wedding in a few months and have never worked with audio before... My goal is to provide them with the best video possible, although they aren't paying me much. I want this to build the foundation of my portfolio without going into too much debt. So do you think I would be fine with just two Tascam DR10L, the Tacam DR40, and the cables you mentioned XLR Cable, 1/4 Inch Cable, RCA to 1/4. (which I have no idea how to use / what to plug it into. Do you think that would be enough?

      So awesome and love that you are going above and beyond to make a foundation for future work! I actually just took over the wedding film school channel and my first video went live yesterday. It's an updated 2020 version of this that goes a bit more in depth. I would HIGHLY recommend checking that out, plus it has updated product links which always helps us out! All that to say I think 95% of the audio we use from a day comes from the two tascam dr10l's and the dr40. I also have a video on this channel called the only 3 audio cables you'll need that goes over when and where I use those cables!

    Hi, I am fairly new to wedding videography and am filming a couple of weddings this weekend. What would you suggest for capturing speeches when the couple will not be using microphones at the reception? In my kit, I currently have the DR-10L, the Zoom h1n with rode lav mic, the rode videomic pro and the tascam dr-40 but I know 4 people will be speaking? Any advice you might have would be greatly appreciated!

    • @BobbyBurns
      @BobbyBurns  5 років тому +1

      We've had this happen a couple times at smaller weddings or elopements. I think the DR10L is the best option out of the bunch, but the H1 will also suffice for capturing usable audio. The dr40 can't do too much without being plugged into something so I would run the videomic pro on camera as a backup (this would be far less than ideal audio, but better than your camera recorders). And then I would mic up the first two toasters with the DR10 and the H1 and I would let all the toasters / bride and groom know that you'll just need to grab the first mic when they are done and put it on the third person, and the second mic and put it on the 4th. I would try to get this done sneakily so there are no delays. Also I would recommend picking up a few more recorders. for future situations like this!

    Sir how about isolate recording? I use zoom h1n and Zoom h1 at the Reception, and Whenever couple speeches, some DJ's forgot to turn down the background music, and whenever we notify them again about the background music, some of the moments where the couple speeches was solemn and romantic are now ruined, so I want to avoid it by Isolating the audio feed coming from the microphone to zoom h1n before it going to the mixer, I know your tascam has that feature but I want some other Alternative as yours was really expensive we are just starting out as videographer, is there any way you can advice me how to dealt with it? What splitter should i buy to split the audio feed coming from the microphone that is going to the mixer buy adding one more output that's going to a zoomh1n?. If so pls help me.

    • @BobbyBurns
      @BobbyBurns  5 років тому

      Well I will say two things. Realistically that isn't the right tool for the job. The zoom h1 is not meant to take a line feed and not really meant to be used that way in general. It may be possible but I woudln't risk it. Second, the tascam dr40 is like $100 used, maybe less. The setup you are talking about getting, with adapters and attenuators, is going to be more than that. If you REALLY want to split the feed check out the whirlwind splitters. However, with something like the dr40 you can usually isolate the mic by taking the second output on the back of the mic receiver. Not every single receiver has it but at almost every wedding I am able to take a 1/4" output from the back of the mic receiver from the DJ which gets me the feed before it hits the mixer. Hope that helps!

    Always have a backup during receptions. Some DJs are douchebags and would intentionally have the line out peak.

    Thx for this video. Its very interesting to see, how people catch sound during a wedding. on part of your video gave me questions. At around 6:00, you mentioned a way to get around level changes or mixed in music by the dj, but I did not understand correctly how. Especially if I am connected to the mixer of the dj, I guess having an output with less as possible manipulation by the dj is very important, as I normally do not have a chance to change settings while recording. As I am new to the business, It would be very nice to get a short explanation of how exactly you go around this. I guess the idea was to just connect to the mic itself?
    Thx in advance and thx again for sharing your knowledge with us...:-)

    • @BobbyBurns
      @BobbyBurns  4 роки тому +1

      Hey! Thanks for the kind words. So you can get around level changes and added elements by taking a feed before it hits the sound board. You won't get music or anything but I am typically just after the toasts given. If there is an extra output on the back of the mic receiver (usually a 1/4") you can take that and it won't be affected by the sound board adjustments. Sometimes that's not available though so you need to take what you can get. I've actually moved most of my educational content over to the Wedding Film School channel, one of the largest wedding filmmaking channels on youtube. I have a much more updated and thorough video on wedding day audio up on there that you should check out! ua-cam.com/video/H5YtMZWEvnQ/v-deo.html

    I'm wondering why you don't mic up the bride with a Tascam DR10L also. They made it in white. That should be a necessary part of the pre-dressing room shots. Most dresses have somewhere where the DR10L can be hidden or not as easily seen. You can use a Rycote sticky to adhere the lav mic on the inside of the dress and you're ready to roll.

    • @BobbyBurns
      @BobbyBurns  3 роки тому +1

      Well I'll say two things to this. 1) This video is quite old and I have an updated video on the Wedding Film School channel, which is where all of my educational content now resides. 2) With that said I still choose to not mic the bride in most scenarios. I have done it, but in my personal opinion I think it is more of a hassle than it is worth in most scenarios. It is rare that I have amazing audio content that I can't use as the groom mic typically picks up the bride just fine for me. And most importantly, I just think it can be a pain to mic them up, access the mic if there is lots of time after putting the dress on, etc. Anyways, that's where I stand on that!

    Just getting started in filmmaking and trying to keep thing simple and affordable while I build my skills. I bought the Tascam DR10L to mic the groom for vows and for letters, now I'm wondering if I should pony up for the DR40? Is it necessary for starting out and not knowing the DJ set up? Or can I put it off for future investment?

    • @BobbyBurns
      @BobbyBurns  5 років тому

      Hey! That's awesome you're building up your kit and making sure to value the audio side of things! So, I would say something to get toasts audio is a must, and the easiest way is to get it from the DJ. Sure you could mic up everyone yourself, but then you're going to need multiple lav mics and it probably won't turn out as well.
      I love the dr40 and it has served me well, but we just got an option that is a little cheaper you might wanna check out. Its the DR10X, so basically like the dr10l but for an xlr input instead of a lav mic. Will be using it tomorrow as a backup to see if we like it but I am pretty optimistic, and they are under $100
