    I took my daughter to her first gig when she was 12.....it was the Who. So three generations of my family have now,seen The Who. My father in the 60's then myself and now my daughter....nearly 50 years after my dad first saw them. I took her to see them again to celebrate 50 years earlier this year.

    Back in the days when the tune came out, we learned to play it with bar chords, and sliding up chords for the whole thing. Doing some of it in regular chords down at the end of the neck sounds great, and may well be correct as he played it. Absolutely love your instrument... The chime is incredible.. Nobody does electric 12 like a Ricky, and you are in command with beautiful clarity. I will never tire of this wonderful old classic..

    Brilliant guitar but most definately not how pete plays it. Opening e chord just moves the shape up the neck for first verse. Etc etc. You can see him do it on live tv performances at the time.

  • @petebellmusic
    @petebellmusic 4 роки тому +4

    Pete Townshend plays the verse using the E chord shape and running it up the neck for the E-G-A part and also the G-A-C-D-E. Keep the low E and B and high E strings open. He doesn't play it using the normal G and A chords that you show here. Nice Ric though

    Not E minor though. He would hold the standard E major chord, with the 1st finger on the G string relaxed enough to mute it. When you swing your arm (or just strum normally!) you can't hit just the 3 low strings, you hit them all. But Em wouldn't be a disaster.

  • @supafrogg258
    @supafrogg258 Рік тому

    I read a quote from Pete Townsend stating that he asked Rickenbacker to please widen the finger board on this special issue model.
    In case anyone was wondering why this special issue model had an F hole in it's semi-acoustic body, instead of Rickenbacker's customary cats-eye slash hole, it's because back in the day when Pete Townsend was playing Rickenbackers with the early Who, Rose-Morris was the British distributor of Rickenbacker. The F hole distinguished those guitars as being distributed by Rose-Morris.
    So, part of the 1993 Plus model's special issue was to recreate the look of the Rickenbacker guitars played by Pete Townsend, with the early Who.

    I just got a new 2021 360/12c63 in Jetglo and I can’t put it down. Almost the last minute I decided I had to at least try the normal vintage sized Rickenbacker neck and see if I’d hate it. Yeah, the nut is narrow but the depth of the neck is nice and chunky. Mercifully Rickenbacker placed the root strings and the octave strings paired very closely so it’s no problem making chords tho I can imagine the 1993plus is a lot simpler to play accurately from the git-go.
    Thanks for the cool videos and lessons. As much as anyone you’re videos finally prompted me to buy one of these fine instruments.

      Congratulations on the new heirloom purchase! I had a C63 for years and loved it. I had it altered by Mark Arnquist (aka "the Rickendoctor") and had the nut redone to where the individuals string pairs were tighter together and spaced better across the fretboard. Really nice. I probably should never have sold that guitar, but the Plus will have to do. Thanks for the kind words. Keep playing that guitar. ;-)

    I wanted a Rick 12 since 1964 - decades later when I could finally afford one, I test drove it at the shop and discovered the neck was too narrow for my big hands. What a bummer that was. So I ended up with a Gibson. Roger McGuinn must have little girlie hands.....

    • @modfather1965
      @modfather1965  4 роки тому

      Actually, he didn't have small hands. He mentions, in his DVD on playing the Rickenbacker 12-string, that he would augment some of his chord shapes to get them to fit on the fretboard. That's the beauty of both the 600 series 12 strings and the 1993 Plus model I'm playing here--wider fretboards. Lovely.

    For those who have the standard width 12 string nuts on your Rickenbackers, you can get a wider spaced standard sized nut made by any competent luthier with the string pairs closer together & outside strings closer to the fretboard edge.
    I don't know why RIC don't use the full width available on the fretboard on their nuts?
    I made my own wider spaced nut but they are available from Rickysounds www.rickysounds.co.uk/product/rickysounds-wider-spaced-12-string-nut-nylatron/

      Thanks for the message. I had "the Rickendoctor," Mark Arnquist of Seattle do mine some 8-9 years ago. This was before Rickysounds or anyone else was offering the service. Made a HUGE difference. Rickenbacker is slow to make any changes to their beloved instruments. This would be an admission of the need to improve, I guess. What this attitude does is keep classics intact, but it also keeps them stuck in the past in some unhelpful ways.

      Very good indeed what a nice sounding guitar but one small thing The gain of the amp seems to be varying a lot as the loud parts seem to reduce in volume Like an Amp pumping from over compression 20dB plus maybe or recorded with Dolby and played back without can sound like that or is that the sound you wanted but sounds a bit odd to me I can hear the system breathing badly Also a lot of maims hum could be due to over compression again

      Sure, man. I'm actually playing through two here: an AC30, and a Roland Jazz Chorus 50. I'm also using a Boss ME-50 Multi-effects pedal with compression (very important), mild distortion, some reverb, and a tad of chorus to get the sound to subtly shift from one amp to the other.

    • @harveycan5820
      @harveycan5820 6 років тому +1

      You need the compression to get the authentic sound. For me it is adjusted a bit on the bright end--maybe could shift the blend knob a bit away from the bight/crispy side. This is more of a Byrds tonality here. For me, it's the Reverb that is creating a loss of clarity and making my head hurt! But, having played a Ric 360 V 64 12 string for many years, I will say that this fellow does capture how thunderous these guitars can be in the rhythm role. You just need to add some compression, let the Vox bring the drive, and let the guitar do its own thing. It will open a huge space in the sound without adding more than the most minimal reverb. Remember, Pete don't surf!

    stop talking

    • @harveycan5820
      @harveycan5820 6 років тому

      Nico Karsen I agree, the talk/play balance is off. He never really plays the song through. Also, the Taj Mahal section is not really a bridge, as it is not a new structure or melody that contrasts the verse and chorus. It is a modulation up a whole tone (as I recall) that functions to bring some freshness to the song, much as a bridge could do. I think some other elements in the arrangement change a bit too. Another way to approach it is to wonder if the song really needed the extra section, or could it have been shortened? Is it getting a bit tedious by then? (I know that is blasphemy). But I think that Townsend was really growing as a writer and moving from pop song forms towards expanding the possibilities of what a rock song could be and do. This song is on Who Sell Out, is it not? Or it just pre-dates that album, which is his first run at an extended narrative, i. e., the radio show format. So he is on his way to Tommy, and this song is Pete beginning to feel his way out of the 2:20 single trap. Of course, it's utterly exciting and inspiring. I appreciate our host capturing that spirit!
