- -Welcome to the Sleep Ranch! We are located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where our ancestors settled and started ranching in 1883.
I (Carson) work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town, and our son Silas! We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.

I’m in total agreement with grazing cattle in those acres, if it helps keep the area healthy then why not. Keep up the great work!
I feel it’s the way land was meant to be used! It’s definitely not overgrazed, but the grazing helps keep the fire dangers low. I love the drone footage, truly God’s country!
Multiple use is the best
Y'all feed us cowboy. A lot of us appreciate what you do.
I love beef. Thanks for what you do!
Thankfully for Godly Parents! Keep up the great work!!
You forgot to mention the wildfires you are stopping! Canada is having a heck of a time since they apparently do nothing to manage their forests!
He did mention it helps keep down fires.😁
The cattle are grazing, their heads never raising. A beautiful sight
As a proud American I love nothing better than to see this America taken care of by great stewards of the land like you and your family GOD BLESS
It's great🤠
Carson, if you keep putting out videos like this one that have beautiful scenery and wonderful music on top of some teaching, you need to be prepared to have your channel blow up. Well done!!
Totally for it beautiful country out there not cool about all the money they charge you guys but your doing a great job and wishing you and your family happy and healthy season
I watched a documentary yrs ago & the plains & mountains had approx 60 million bison (buffalo) grazing this land...
The forests evolved as did the plains with many species of hoofed animals..
Once they were gone , the ecology changed for the worse...
Fires were a normal part of the Black Hills , but the trees could survive a fire when the under brush was minimal..
Then through forest management , the fire were put out , the ground was allowed to build up decades of tender ..
Then when a fire broke out about 30 years ago , the tender built up allowed the fire to reach temperatures that nothing could survive...
Yellowstone , the Black Hills , the Big Horn mtns & many other forests burned out of control for months..
In fact , man didnt have the ability to stop these inferno's..
Millions of acres burned until the fall rains & snow (mother nature) put them out...
Now they know the relationship of herds & the forests are beneficial to both...
In fact , more cattle should be allowed to graze these forests ..
The benefits outweigh the cons because never again will bison herds reach 60 million again...
This isnt just my opinion...
This is the ecology of those forests...
Excellent reply!!! It's not climate change causing these intense fires, it's total mismanagement by our government, both federal and state.
The land is so beautiful
I enjoy watching your videos. Keep them coming. May God Bless you all.
i'm from boston mass i like it.i think it works out for every body. some day i would like to go horseback riding up there for 3 or 4 days
You are awesome. It is important for what you are doing. Love your channel.
The cattle on a thousand hills belong to Him.
That’s paradise, beautiful land
It is beautiful where you turned those cows out!
I’ve been going to the Black Hills for 7 years to ride my horses. I’ve always enjoyed seeing the cattle out there free grazing. Like you said, it’s good for the grass to keep it down and the weeds out. I just wish, especially being owned by the people, that ranchers wouldn’t have to pay so much for it. Your doing is all a favor by taking care of the land! (Also, I always close the gates) lol
Such beautiful country. Your so blessed to do what you do where you do it. 😮
The drone footage is so beautiful. The green grass and the creeks full of water, the cattle have to love that. Silas is getting so big. And he seems to like the camera.
The aerial film shows how beautiful your land is. Thank you. Take care ❤
I love to see the grazing, love that it is being conserved in a mutually beneficial way.
This arrangement makes sense. Totally agree, hope they do the same in Canada. Silas is a cutie.👍❤️🇨🇦
I for this to help keep fires down and gives you all more land to graze good drone footage sir
It is a good 😊 idea to have grazing rights to help the land.
I think it's awesome that you can use the land for grazing, beautiful drone footage!!
Compared to any government agency taking care of it, I’m 100% certain that ranchers do a much better job because it’s their livelihood. I appreciate you keeping my share of the grass mowed 😁keep up the great work.
I think it's a good thing to graze the permits. I enjoyed the video.
It's a great idea to let the cattle graze. Places around here have to have goats graze on the hills to keep vegetation down because of forest fires. Definitely not lacking rain there this year.
Total agreement with grazing permits. Great video.
Howdy from west Texas! 😊
In total agreement with the grazing permits! Keeping federal land healthy is paramount! Keeping the grounds fuels down stop fires!!!
The opening of this video should be a screen saver, it's no wonder you are tied to the land, who wouldn't be just to see that everyday would make you want to go to work, set down and have a chicken sandwich for me, one of the BEST videos yet.
Man that is beautiful country :) Enjoy and don't ever take it for granted
Always enjoy your videos
We love the drone footage. It's so beautiful in the hills. Grazing is good for those acres. You are taking care of the land. We have been up there ranger riding the past few years. We love it there, and we love seeing the cows. Keep up the good work of taking care of the beautiful land that God has blessed us with.
I think it's a great way to keep the land healthy and to help ranchers and their families like yours!
It is great that they let ranchers use that property to help control fire risks. No reason to have land just be completely useless here in the USA
I love that the lands are getting used and well taken care of. Benefits everyone.
Hi Carson, great video of talking about the Forest Service Permits and allowing the cattle to graze there. I think it is a great idea as it is a win for the the Forest Service and the individual Ranchers. Along with keeping the growth down on the permit the cows also provide free fertilizer with their waste. I didn't realize it was that expensive to get access to the permits but I guess the money you save in feeding them compensates greatly. Really enjoyed the drone footage of unloading the cows and showing the little creek running along the Forest permit area. The music that went along with it was very fitting.
I agree with and support the grazing. The less pesticides and chemicals used, the better. I think it is so important to preserve our country’s land, our food supply, wildlife, and our way of life as naturally as possible. Great videos.
U guys are truly blessed to live where you do it is the most beautiful land and yes I believe in grazing those forest permits to utilize the land how God intended it to be. I live on the east side of South Dakota so I think it's great how well you take care of the land. We only have so much land and we need to take care of it like our forefathers would want us to. Take care and God bless
I think it's a good idea to have the Forrest service lease grazing to ranchers. It helps as you said to keep the land from becoming overgrown and a fire risk.. it's also a way to make some money off a resource that otherwise would just sit there. Keep the videos coming !
I think it’s great…cows have to eat, we have to eat and through your work, investment, you eat.
❤Love your channel and what you do in and for this great land !! You definitely should be grazing on those areas. The crime is you having to pay so much to do it. We Americans continue to lose more FREEDOMS every day and it's SICKENING.
I wish there was a way to know what brands to buy in Wisconsin to be eating such cared for beef as yours. I use Wisconsin Meadows, I think they are pretty good.
❤Thank you for the videos and for being such good stewards of American lands. 🇺🇸
Awesome video beautiful country😊
Hope you guys have been well. Love to see so much green and the cow haveing a smooth day. 9" of rain, sure did help your pastures and hay fields. Have a blessed weakend
I think it's an awesome idea because that land is healthier because of the grazing and fertilization from the cattle and that helps the wildlife as well. So it's definitely a good thing. Also, having been in MT and seen the wildfires caused because our public lands weren't used and cared for as they should have been, we see how important it is to have proper grazing and management. For years we saw huge herds of elk and deer forced into town because their habitat was choked off and cluttered from the wilful mismanagement of our public lands. It makes absolutely no sense at all to leave it to become diseased and choked up with dead fall trees instead of making good use of the timber and grazing to keep grasses healthy. 😊
Our public lands need to be managed with multiple use in mind. Grazing your guys which helps feed our country is fine with me.
Your videos kept popping up on my feed so I decided to give one a watch, glad I did! We are practically neighbors, we run some cows and farm over here in western Wyoming. We also have forest permits, just turned our cows out on Tuesday. Excited to watch some more of your videos. Take care
Yes its a need and your work is truly amazing. They at one time did that here in montana. Don't know if they still do. Look forward to more video's.
I think it is good for all involved.
Always love the drone footage and beautiful music 🎼 Thank you for the information Carson. Appreciate respect for our Mother Earth & great animal husbandry. From the heart of this Chippewa ❤
Your drone footage is absolutely stunning! Have never seen this part of our beautiful country. I agree with you on grazing cattle acres. Silas is growing so fast. He is a cutie for sure.
I agree with you about grazing those areas. It is a great way to improve them and keep it healthy with less risk of fire too.
I am on the same page as you. You are doing a great job of conservation and preservation together. As a prior wildland fire fighter with the USFS, more ranchers could benefit from this. Unfortunately regulations and cost can be quite hard to meet. But we do the best we can. Preventing wildland fires come from good range management. By using different pastures during the year helps keep the fire danger in control. Keep up the great work. I appreciate the information I get from your videos.
It is being used as it was intended! I have hunted pheasant in SD for over 35 years and have several ranchers as long-time friends. I live near Cincinnati Ohio and a couple of friends bought ranches in the Mobridge area and the West River. We also invested in Buffalo for several years!
I don't know if I should comment, since I don't live in the USA, but in Spain. But it seems to me a phenomenal way to take advantage of the land, keep the ecosystem healthy and vigorous and help families who live in areas as beautiful as yours to earn a family livelihood. God save you.
Ranching is absolutely not a cheap profession. And it takes a very well oiled team to do it justice, as you and your family do. Not an easy task, and you do it with a rare dedication to the land and your animals. I always look forward to your videos.
It great for the land and help the rancher out and that’s a good thing
I think it’s great that you can graze these areas. I wish more state would use this practice so their forest acres would be cleaner and reduce the fire hazard!
Wow, all that rain really has everything greened up nice. The pastures look great. Important to keep those areas healthy, so grazing the cattle makes sense.
Tree huggers will not like it but most of them have never worked on a forest fire.
I think it’s a great partnership, and keeps the forest beautiful
Canada could learn a lesson from grazing leases in the USA. Maybe NYC wouldn’t be so smokey and there outdoor be much less ya ya ya yackety yackety about, you know, the planets climate…that’s all I’m gonna say about that. Thank God for ranchers who lease our lands so there will be less waste of grass and thank God for the good grasslands available. And thank you all for raising cattle to feed all of us! Hi Bubs!
You're videos are so enjoyable to watch Your drone footage was amazing what beautiful mountain scenery Definitely God's country
GOD BLESS
Best wishes from Ireland 🇨🇮
Loved loved the drone shots and music. Thanks for the information on the grazing permits. It is so true if it was not grazed the fire hazard is much greater and the grazing keeps the land health.
Good to see our lands be used for good. Really injoy the ranch and your little family. God Bless.
Beautiful scenery. It must be a wonderful place in the summer
My Grandpa back in the 40s did that in Teen Sleep Wy. Took sheep to the mountains the grass and I think he said they would bring them back down in August. I don't see anything wrong with that practice. Less chance of grass fires or Forrest fires. Thanks for sharing.
I like ranchers raising cattle on public land. I think that’s a real nice place to live for a cow.
I really like how you guys utilize the land, as I believe that’s what it was made for in that terrain. I really like how you guys are able to buy the permits and how that works for you as you are building a career. Here in the Midwest, we rent both pasture land and farmland for row crops in a much more competitive and aggressive way of cash-bidding and having to lease on contract, and I think for the producer, you have the advantageous method in comparison to what we do. The reason I think this, is it is much more difficult to lose leases acreage because of getting outbid on the year-to-year basis. I really enjoy following along, and learn things from you guys all the time on how we can raise better beef here at home! My wife and I can apply a lot of what you’re doing in the black hills on our small Indiana operation!
IM ALL FOR IT
GREAT VIDEO
BEAUTIFUL 😢
Thanks SO much for the work that you guys do! I know it's hard. But what an office!
Thank you Carson for the excellent explanation how the permits work.
Really like the drone footage. I bet that helps when your out checking cattle during the summer.
Love it!!! My gosh the scenery just keeps getting better. The music is great also. I really enjoyed it. So much information. What can I say about that cute little Silas? He is so cute.
Keep up the good work. I watch for you every day. Hugs for Damaris .
Amazing Into. Beautiful country
I just started raising Bobwhite Quail. What most people don't realize is that. What your doing with the cattle makes a perfect habitat for the quail. Cattle in the fields make trails for the birds. The cow chips make food for the quail by making the insect population. As you said. No chemicals. The quail are very small when catched. The cows walking around make it easy for the babies to move around as well. Thanks for what you do.
Great use of public grounds, most don’t understand the cost to the rancher. Thanks for the clarification.
Awesome video as usual! Hey nice hat LOL!!
I’ll never understand why the Forrest service auctions things off so high and charge ridiculous rates and ask congress for more money lol.
I love the videos. Sweet family and Silas is a real cutie pie!
Good water and plenty of feed those cattle should have a darn good summer great 👍👍
The drone footage is always spectacular!
Carson in my opinion it would be a waste of what resources are there to not get the grazing permits. I 💯 % agree with all of the ranchers who do it . I’am assuming what you are calling “ private land” is family owned land ?
Good to see you getting some more rain. Its looking good up there. 🙏🙏🙏
Drone videos are beautiful. Thank you for sharing them with us
Grazing public land is good for the environment
Just subscribed Carson, you do a great job of explaining day to day ranch life, it’s hard work, but very rewarding, my husband and I come out to the hills spring and fall, sure we have seen your cattle free ranging on our drives through the area, I watch your videos every morning with coffee, makes me feel like I’m out there, favorite place in the world to be, thanks to you and your wonderful family.
Thanks for taking us along the land is beautiful glad your taking care of it for generations to come ❤️
beautiful country - made more beautiful by grazing the pastures.
It’s a win win for all of us.
I like the music with the drone videos!
Grazing is your rite! It’s a must. Do you ever have predation do to lions?
We sure do!
Amazing drone shots especially at the beginning.
win win imo ... public ground is better maintained with proper grazing providing functional habitat for domestic and wild.....sure its a lot more complex than what meets the eye when sharing domestic with wild ...but in reality any farm pretty much does that anyway as those deer and elk and whatnot sure know how to jump fences lol... but was wondering how you manage predator's on public ground or if its even a big problem with bear, wolf, etc...
Beautiful video. The drone shots are stunning.
I am all for it! I like beef, but those permits seem outrageous to me, God bless Sleep Ranch.
The drone footage was great. Thanks for explaining the grazing permit process. I've read that the BLM and USFS typically spend more managing their grazing programs than they collect in grazing fees.
