I'm thinking it could have been a combination of 2 things that make sense to me.
Cliff was like an older brother to look up to,, and they likely deferred to him. They all lost that, and James figured he needed to be that leader for the band after Cliff's loss, so he just took it to a new level.
This was shortly after Cliff's death. After the childhood trauma, his dad leaving, his mom dying, this may have felt like a last straw kind of thing for him. His actions on the stage are pure rage and fury. I imagine he was hopped up on a lot of booze, and took a very aggressive and 'f it' attitude.

This was back when only myself and about four others in my high school even knew who they were. I was the only guy in my high school who wore a Jean jacket with Metallica patches all over it. I used to collect rare Metallica albums back then. I still have my collection stored away somewhere... it’s composed of Different colored vinyl albums of Creeping Death & Jump in the Fire as well as picture discs of the first three albums and whiplash, bootleg concert recordings (including Cliff’s last show), interview picture discs, double LP’s, etc... all purchased back in the late 80s. I remember When AJFA came out, we had about 10-15 more students in the school that suddenly became fans. I knew things would never be the same from that point on. Once they hit the mainstream and became popular (pretty much from 1990 and on), I pretty much lost interest, as the nostalgia of being in that small exclusive club of fans was gone. But I still like to reminisce once in a while.

Especially considering they had their Metalhammer Fest gig professionally recorded in 1985 aswell as their 1983 Illinois show. I would have loved to see close ups and multiple camera angles of the band, including shots from behind the drum kit because the set up Lars had in the Lightning and Puppets era's were the best set-ups he ever had.

@mrchallenges1news I think I've probably played creeping death, down picking to completion with no hesitation once. And only once. Other than that, I'll find myself alternate picking here and there to stop myself from straining. Once you begin to feel the strain in your hand, you're screwed. Gotta be relaxed as possible. But hey, even James throws in the odd alternate picking in certain phrases to compete with straining

So, it looks like Jason is playing with them here and not Cliff, so what would the timeline be for this show? It would have to be after 1986, or at least, no earlier than late November/December of that year? Cliff had passed away in September, so I wouldn't expect they'd be ready to play shows so soon afterwards, with all the auditions, rehearsals, and what not? Either way, the utterly crushed it here. This is the sound of a band that really doesn't exist anymore. With all due respect to millennial -era Metallica (who do have some good songs, to be fair) time has moved on...

That time when Ulrich could still play the drums, and Hammett was already making mistakes on the guitar. In general, they keep the pace cool, one and a half times faster. On bass so already Newsted.
