This is why Jason Newsted is my favorite musician and i'm not even a bassist, it's just the energy, the burning passion night in night out, the rawness, the love for his craft.
But he's no Cliff Burton, that's the problem. When Cliff died, so did Metallica IMHO.

Jason was fkn badass in this band. He always gave it 110% and it clearly shows in this live performance. He's so engaged in the song. He's not only killing that bass but the brutal emotion as he sings backup vocals during the chorus and various parts of the song make it that much more enjoyable to watch and hear.
Rob is a much better fit, Rob can actually keep up with the other guys.

Jason was the embodiment of the brutality of 90s metal. He had the most evil look and aggressive attitude on stage.
It's crazy because when he wasn't on stage he seemed like the chillest dude ever. He'd be calm and laughing but on stage he went through a transformation into monster Jason lol

They have a technique that doesn’t hurt their vocal chords, it’s weird but true. Look up the biology of metal screaming, there’s a great vocal coach who explains it really well, though her name eludes me.

Gelato556 I agree. Jason's bass sounds phenomenal here! Overall the mix is really, really good! But, I especially love that bass. I have always liked a heavy bass sound. Whether it be Sabbath, Maiden etc. To me the bass is there for a reason. It doesn't have to be just a backing instrument.

Gabriel Hernandez You are right. That's one thing that has always bothered me about Metallica. They have had some great Bassists. But in their live mix and even some studio, you cant hear the bass at times hardly at all. I guess James is well known for not liking to much of a deep mix. Its a shame because of the talented Bass players they have had. In my opinion, the mix here is the way they should always sound, because the bass sounds phenomenal here. Take care and peace.
+Chris J The thing is when you have as much bottom end on the guitars as they usually do, they eat up the frequencies where a bass guitar would usually go. So the bass frequencies are coming out of the guitar 4x12 and the bassist winds up just filling a corner of the stage so it will look like a complete band.

He's studied vocal technique since and has grown from a brilliantly talented teenage screamer into an adult male vocalist whose vocal cords can survive the brutal gig of fronting Metallica! His longevity is a thing of beauty.

This was my favorite point in metallicas live performances. Lars still on fire, Kirk playing his solos with no filler, James voice still there, and Jason's brutal bass and vocals.
