I know you've made videos on reference tracks before but I'd love a video where you take us through starting a project with a reference track for composition, instead of the final mixdown. Copying tracks, basically, which I think is a valuable skill for producers.

There’s a feature in pro q3 that I’ve been using for a couple years now.
put a proq3 on the reference track and hit analyser pre+post. Then at the top name it either ‘reference’ or the title of the track.
Then put another instance of PROQ3 on your master and click analyser (pre+post) again. Go down the list until you find the reference and select it.
You should now see the reference track as a red analyser behind your tracks analyser. This can give you a better representation of spectrum analysing rather than having two copies of proq3 next to each other.
    Enjoy

I do my final mixes on just one (!) Focal Monitor. So I have a perfect Mono Source. And for the overall sound I check my mix on a cheap radio. And the magic clue for translation is using a pink or brown noise curve for balancing the frequencies. That really takes out the guess work out of mixing. Thanks for your tips. ❤

Quite funny this, I've choosen my monitors (Kali IN8) because they were great as monitor speakers but also to listen music on.
So without knowing your trick I'v been listening to hundreds of hours of well mixed stuff from other dj's / producers.
It really helps a lot, you immediately notice if something is slightly off.
I love it when a good technique / trick is fun to do and takes no effort 😍
Personally I like to switch between the Kali's, my normal headphone and probably the most used device to listen music on : Apple airpods, another option that's used a lot is a simple bluetooth speaker like for example the jbl ones. If it sounds good on all of them I trust it to be good. And they're all easily connectable to a laptop or pc, so switching is easy.
Last check, when I think I'm done, I put the track away for some time, few days or more, then listen to it again and be open to the renewed first impression. Sometimes I really don't like a track and sometimes I love it.

    • @EDMTips

Excellent video as usually. I know I'm asking too much, but if you could make a video on fixing a poorly mixed track when compared to the reference track. For example, if the stereo width of our track is tiny/too wide compared to the reference track. Same goes for the frequency spread. And one more - how to choose a reference track. Not all reference tracks are equally good IMHO.

Remember to set your windows speaker settings to full range.. I spent a long time on "sattelite speaker" setting.. meaning bass distortion/ compensation into the high - midrange. It took a while to understand that typically you want your sound / speaker circuitry to do its magic from a normal full range signal.. the only magic windows gives you is for tiny speakers.. the scary part is its unticked by default.. and easy to miss.. its like that because buying tiny desk speakers at the supermarket is so common..

The most important thing is to know your system in the studio. So go along and listen to music (NOT yours), watch movies, documentaries etc. IN YOUR STUDIO ... a lot of it. I mean really a lot. If you are only in the studio for your own production sessions, the chances are very high you will not know your monitors well.

A useful one, but rarely spoken about: DON’T A/B
If you’ve decided that something needs compression or EQ (Or both), then there’s no purpose comparing to the raw sound. You should only focus on whether the processing achieves what you need it to do.
This is usually why mixes sound bad on a car stereo. Being too conservative with processing because you’re wasting time listening to the original sound.

Sorry, I hadn't actually watched your vid when I posted that last comment. Thank you and great advice. Apparently a lot of producers are advising against using lots of different speaker types as that can lead to confusion. Instead (as you said) learn how your own speakers/headphones sound with lots of music. SonarWorks??? Would you believe I keep my SonarWorks switched off. I can't believe their response ... seems too bass light. I wonder if I'm alone here. Lots of Acoustic Rockwool around my room though. Keep up the good work. Not sure what I'd like to suggest for you to do next Will. But I'm getting into DnB and though I've watched all your Dnb production video even more would be lovely esp as there's 3 Dnb singles currently in UK Top 10 right now. @@EDMTips Hi, and thank you for taking an interest. To answer your question Will, last week "Chase and Status" were 10 and 8 in the UK official charts with Baddadan and Disconnect respectively. That must be the best success Chase and Status have had in years. So Chase and Status might be worth a look at. But Kenya Grace's Strangers was No2. Tho Drake's now landed 3 Top10 new entries, Kenya Grace is now No1!!!! A DnB track No1? Anyway her track Strangers track is lovely, super light drums. DnB is influencing other tracks too eg: Asking by Sonny Fodera (currently No10) sounds like down-tempo DnB before turning into a club banger. I reckon DnB's bigger than ever ... I wonder why. Hope this helps. :)

that's funny but after a mix I check directly inside my car, for me that's the best solution to find troubles between kicks and bass, or wrong levels....

I tested tracks in mixchecker and they sounded bad, so I tried loading famous tracks into mixchecker and they sounded bad too, so didn't worry.

Know your room! Best hack you can get. If you listen to alot of music in your room and can train your ears then you can't go wrong. If you have respectable monitors and headphones and familar with your rooms acoustics then you will get pretty damn close. Don't forget Artists have openly admitted realeasing music soley made on laptops with no engineering experience yet they blow up and have massive hits. If it sounds good and it sounds good in your room with trained ears then its gooooood.

Great video, but misses one major essential. Walk away from the damn thing for a couple of hours. Yes to meters and visuals, but that lughole fatigue is a total quality killer, so I always get a kind of in the ball park mix, which takes long enough, then just leave it for a couple of hours, even overnight. On return, the mix, reference track, all of it becomes 100 times clearer, and easier to deal with the deficiencies. So go and have a beer, snog your partner, get some sleep, anything but sitting for even more brain-draining hours in front of the mix!
