Garden gloves and some sandpaper makes removing the spines very easy. The pulp of ripe horned melons is very nice with plain vanilla icecream. 🍨🍧 ;P Your melon pulp looked ripe enough to eat with icecream. The ones riper with orange pith under the skin have more vitamin C, apparently. The orange pith is quite tangy! I saw on Google books, somewhere, that the cooked leaves have been eaten in Africa, as a vegetable, but you'd want to check out several sources before doing that.
Thanks for the tips. I can't wait to try the vanilla ice cream thing. I definitely prefer the ripe ones but in my growing zone they sometimes struggle to get all the way ripe before it's too dark and cool. So super glad the green ones are good, too!
I don't mind the aftertaste, but some people don't like it. I once read that plant breeders may try to develop varieties with no aftertaste. 🍦🍨🍧 Plain vanilla icecream is better than flavoured as it brings out the unique horned melon flavour. They are ok with whipped cream and sugar, too, as a dessert sweet. It's nice how the jelly capsules slide down one's gullet! lol There's no reason why the skins can't be made into a pickle, just as watermelon skins are! 🍉 Cucumber seeds spring up from human faeces, like raspberry, kiwano and apple seeds etc, do, so I think horned melons must've been in the Garden of Eden, too! lol
You feed your cheddar grass?
That salad looked amazing
