Your uncle was my favorite reggae drummer & your father is my favorite reggae bass player. Carly's style was so distinctive I can even hear it in his session work away from the Wailers. That stuff is often uncredited, but you can always tell its him. I also read where Aston talked about removing as many notes from a bassline as possible. Nothing extra, just the most Crucial notes. Your drumming sounds fantastic and I'm so glad the musical legacy of your family continues. Maximum Respect!
Amazing !!!! If there's ever a movie about the Wailers , they have have you play Carlton. You look like him and sound like him ! wow You're now my favorite reggae drummer. Respect Ras !!!
Many thanks! That’s beautiful! I’ve played for 57 years and your uncle Carlton is one of my favorite drummers in any style of music…he was a true master and you’re making him very proud!
I have some information to share. The Wailers was not a band until late 1969, early 1970 when the Barret brothers (Carlton and Aston) joined the Wailers, during the sessions with Lee Perry. Between 1963 and 1970 the Wailers were a vocal group. Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer left the band in 1974. ----Very nice sound, in the spirit of Carlton Barret. I like it a lot.
Thank you for sharing this great drum beat, Aston. Keep it going so generations to come may know about your uncle's contribution to the drum world. I love this beat which to me "IS" the signature sound of reggae music. You know it when you hear it. Peace. G.
man your uncle is the man brutha if it wasnt for him i wouldnt be able to 'feel it in the one drop' anywhere in reggae songs and u got it in u as well man keep it up
FInally some REAL reggae drumming. All these **** tutorials on youtube made me keep looking for a good video and where else shouldve stopped looking at a BARRETT video of course!!! Keep playing man: these vibes made my day!!!
JAH BLESS!!!!!!!!!! RASTA!!!! ALL OF YOU THE BEST LINE OF DRUMS AND BASS ON THE WORLD! THIS IS THE REAL ROOTS MUSIC! THANK YOU ALL BARRET FAMILY MY RESPECT!
You're not only trying,you're just doing it ! I've blinded tested a friend of mine who's musician & he said right away: " that's Carlton Barrett !!! " Thanks man,Peace :)
been playing with mostly Jamaicans reggae 15 years, snare is King ,you do intros like ur uncle ,real sharp with almost a timbale sound, yah mon true reggae sound.its in your blood.RESPECT from I-T QUEENS NYC
¡¡¡Es increíble el parecido con su tio Carlton Barret!!!,aparte de que toca casi como su tio,que era el GENIO en la bateria, que DIOS lo tenga en su gloria.
Aston you are a wicked drummer. Ive been listening to your Uncle Carlton for most of my life since the late Rocksteady early reggae days and listened to him along with Leroy Wallace develop and develop. Carlton was unique in that he made that snare sound like a piece of kit that he had made especially. Somehow you've managed to get that sound again. Along with Joe Isaacs of Lynn Taitts band the Jets, Carlton Santa Davis, Horsemouth and Sly Dunbar your Uncle Carlton stood out from the rest. I am glad your keeping this art form an art form.
Saw the Wailers Show @ stage One, Fairfield last month. After looking at how the drum kit was set up i knew it was going to be great show. Father & Son On Bass & Drum respectively, Priceless. Bless
Wow... I just watched the first clip, now this...?? Man am I glad I found this...! This is the closest I've ever heard any drummer play the high-hat like Carlton. I've played with a number of different reggae drummers, and only one came close to the same feel.... but not like this!! This was IT right here.....!
style scott was one of dem. he played on tracks like carlton barrett. some tracks on gregory isaacs, bro yahya and many more. after carlton my second favorite drummer
Not, he can’t count; HE NEEDS TO LEARN A LOT ABOUT DRUMMING - JUST BECAUSE YOUR UNCLE WAS A GREAT DRUMMER, DOESN’T AUTOMATICALLY MAKE ONE A GOOD DRUMMER: THIS GUY HAS A VERY LONG WAY TO GO STILL!
I saw a lot of formative reggae vids and I didn't find what I was looking for, till I find this awesome video, study the greats and the originals, that's all
Fair comment. Surely the heaviest steppers by Junior Delgado is 'A Storm Is Coming' and Sly wasn't drumming on that (Have you heard the explosive dubplate cut : 'King Tubby's Coming'?) But I think Sly's greatest moment was on Niney/King Tubby's 'I soon know' - a mighty steppers tune. Unfortunately, there is not enough space here to discuss all the roots classics. I respect your knowledge of these legendary Reggae musicians and I'm glad that you are keeping the Art of Reggae drumming alive.
I started playing drums at a very young age, but, your uncle was a major influence on my playing, from developing good time, to learning those licks of Carly's! lol
Great Drumming, If you Listen closely from 0:00 to 1:17 - Sounds Like The Midnight Raver Performance @ Quiet Knight Club, 1975 By BMW, IMO. I:37 to 1:55 - Thats The Intro To "I Shot The Sheriff" Definitely Carly To The Bone, Keep Up. I Think I'm Try That Intro, HAHA
i really like your stuff man.. nice vibration.. could you maybe make a video were you breake the beats up.. i would really like to play some of that reggaegrooves..
Carlton Barrett...the greatest reggea drummer ever...I'm so happy to hear his spirit is still alive! Big up Nephew and never stop drumming!
The wailers was a dream Team
He created a style. That is still baffling drummers and musicians today.
Your uncle was my favorite reggae drummer & your father is my favorite reggae bass player. Carly's style was so distinctive I can even hear it in his session work away from the Wailers. Do you know if any of those albums he did studio work on he’s definitely my favorite reggae drummer of all time. Aston jr. taking the torch 🔥
Amazing !!!! If there's ever a movie about the Wailers , they have have you play Carlton. You look like him and sound like him ! wow You're now my favorite reggae drummer. Respect Ras !!!
