I have this same air craft in FSX. Haven't flown it for a while. I have recently come across your YT channel and enjoy your videos; especially the 'TUTORIAL' ones... I spend my early morning hours doing what I can't afford in real life.... LoL!... Thousands of hours now... Keep 'em comin'!.. :)
Thank you so much for your kind comments! I'm glad you find the tutorials helpful. I'm just now approaching 200 hours and I've gotten sort of addicted to a shiny new toy... the Airbus H135 helicopter. I think it's because I enjoy low and slow flights to see the scenery!
This helps me so much! I've been struggling to transition to the Mooney from the C152/C172 flying I've been doing. Extra levers, wildly different handling, landing gear, oh my! :D
Great Video. You don`t have to press the ALT button. Just set the Altitute (4000 ft) and press the ARM button. Nothing more to do. The ALT hold mode start automatically at 4000 ft.
Thank you for this Kind Sir. I got my instrument ticket back before GPS then had to stop flying so am frustrated not using VORs to hop about. Am using MSFS to rekindle that love affair with my old Ranger and your tutorial has helped a lot!
Thanks for your kind remarks! I enjoy using GPS, but also like planning and executing flights using VOR navigation. I also like the Garmin glass, but also enjoy flying with a six pack. Never flown a small plane for real....won't be dying in a private plane crash!
@@BadOldBuzzard Flying for real is much different, much busier than what MSFS let's you think it is, especially in IMC/turbulance when you are hand flying the approach. Using wing leveler or rudimentory autopilot to hold a course or altitude helps a lot but besides constantly scanning the 6-pack you don't have a lot of cycles left to figure out frequencies, waypoint descent altitudes etc. without having done a lot of pre-planning. If you have a second for a story one night I was IMC from AQB to TUL. Once established on the outbound radial I'd set the heading bug in the DG to whatever was needed to stay on the radial and correct for crosswind. So eyes go round and round the 6 pack including the DG, keeping everything centered. Except every couple minutes I'd have drifted off the radial a bit to port. Turn to the right intercept the radial again, then align back to the heading bug. Eventually ATC called to ask if I was alright. I was way off the radial, 2-3 miles but the DG said everything was fine. This time I looked up at the magnetic compass and realized I was really headed 90 degrees left of my course! Turns out the DG had a bearing going out and was drifting, so was basically useless. I spent the next couple hours of that flight using the mag compass which as you know tends to bounce around, turns in the opposite direction upon banking, etc. Quite an adventure!
Thanks, Jerry!! So glad it was helpful. No doubt, the Mooney is my favorite aircraft for IFR. It's fast and I've become comfortable flying it and setting up flight plans. I use Little Nav Map for planning, and it lets me export an MSFS2020 compatible .pln file. Fly safe! Have FUN!
Great video, gave you an abbo : D I was looking for a tutorial myself. I thought doing it with the Garmin is ‘Procedure ‘ option. That did not work. So your video really helped me out.
I purchased the Mooney a week ago and look forward to shooting an ILS landing if/when I can fly without the flashing skies someday. Guess I will go back to FSX until that time but will really miss the graphics. Take care!
Now that I have the RTX 3070, I'm going to sell my 2 week old GTX 1660 TI SC for $200. (Cost me $299.99 + tax on Amazon). I was getting low 30's FPS at 1440p with mix of Ultra and High settings. If you're interested you can drop me an email john@buzzardbait.org
Changing The LOC OBS setting during an ILS approach should not have any effect on the LOC, however it normally is set to the LOC course as a precaution and for situational awareness.
Thanks for the video man! I've been really enjoying the Mooney so far and was wondering if it could execute ILS approaches since I generally prefer flying IFR. You earned a sub.
This is exactly what I was looking for! I learned that the nav2 radio was the piece I was missing. Learned to set the OBS to the heading. I think that you’ll find there’s no need to put the AP in alt hold mode. Once you capture it it will stay there. You can still set your next altitude and it won’t act until you arm it. And can you explain why you set the altitude to zero? Is that a bug, I don’t think they would be necessary as well. Thanks again! I love the Mooney. Hopefully we’ll see you in the skies!!
No! I thought I needed to tell it 0 to get it low enough to turn off the AP just above the runway and land it. However, since have discovered it isn't necessary. The approach will take it down and put it on the runway in AP. I still turn off AP at the threshold. So glad it was of help to you!!
I think the "setting the altitude to zero" was making sure the vertical speed choice was showing "zero" -- if you click the inner button again, the current alt choice would then be shown.
Good question! If you leave landing flaps down and taxi too fast, the aircraft might try to take off again, or at least get light on the front gear. I usually bring flaps in as soon as I can after landing. Of course, on the Mooney, you can deploy the speed brakes to help show you down.
TY. My mistakes: I wasnt setting both radios to the ILS as I seemed that was redundant. I was also also focusing on the HSI (navigational indicator) and not the CDI. So my question is: when does the HSI (navigational indicator) get used in this plane as I didn't see you mention or work the HSI.? I also want to confirm you have to get out of ALT HOLD mode manually when entering the glide slope as the avionics wont do that for you automatically when capturing the glide slope. Thanks for the clear to the point tutorial. Also, are you using the G530 enhancement mod ?
@@danielschmidt6499 Dan. I have been flying the same flight plan over and over working the VORs in cloudy weather. I see now. The HSI is for VOR to VOR and then the other OBS takes over when locked onto the localizer from the same NAV radio. The mooney in general doesn't usually have both steam gauges on some models I think. This mooney is like a jack of all trades and really a unique aircraft worth the $20 I paid for it on the Xmas special.
Awesome video, very nicely explained! Thank you!

Great ISL landing. I was afraid we were under shooting the runway. Exciting!
We were undershooting a bit toward the last of the approach. Believe it or not, I am getting better at landings, but it's a slow process.
Brilliant. loved it. Thanks. Just subscribed.

nice landing! very helpful. thank you.
Very nicely done but... comments about prop pitch would help. I assume you didn't touch the speed brakes? Also, what's the comment about flaps about?

Nice one mate

Yes I do ILS approaches in the Mooney all the time. The Mooney is my favorite. Thanks for subscribing!

You're most welcome!!
Very helpful-thanks!
Thanks for the exelent instruction.
One question on 18:45 flaps op or you'll be sorry, but why?

Thank you! I didn't know the OBS worked off of nav2. Carenado's lack of a POH is so helpful...NOT.
Scalded rabbit, LOL. True, and best laugh of the day :-)
Where do you find the approach plates? Thanks for the video.
Check out Sky Vector... it's free and they have charts for most airports.

Hi! The HSI will be used for VFR. Just if you'll fly through a radial of a VOR. Also VLOC mode have to be used. M20 also one of my favourites😎
