  • Ever been curious about propane powered vehicles? Join us as we take a look at a dual powered Gas/Propane Yukon XT4 and explore the world of propane powered vehicles.
    A natural gas vehicle (NGV) is an alternative fuel vehicle that uses compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG). Natural gas vehicles should not be confused with autogas vehicles powered by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), mainly propane, a fuel with a fundamentally different composition.
    In a natural-gas-powered vehicle, energy is released by the combustion of methane gas (CH4) fuel with oxygen (O2) from the air to form carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H2O) in an internal combustion engine. Methane is the cleanest burning hydrocarbon, and many contaminants present in natural gas are removed at the source. Existing gasoline-powered vehicles may be converted to run on CNG or LNG and can be dedicated (running only on natural gas) or bi-fuel (running on either gasoline or natural gas). Diesel engines for heavy trucks and buses can also be converted and can be dedicated with the addition of new heads containing spark ignition systems, or can be run on a blend of diesel and natural gas, with the primary fuel being natural gas and a small amount of diesel fuel being used as an ignition source. It is also possible to generate energy in a small gas turbine and couple the gas engine or turbine with a small electric battery to create a hybrid electric motor-driven vehicle.
    Convenient fuel storage and refueling is a key challenge compared to petrol and diesel vehicles because natural gas is pressurized and liquefied (in case of LNG). The lower energy density of gases compared to liquid fuels is mitigated to a great extent by high compression or gas liquefaction, but requires a trade-off in terms of size/complexity/weight of the storage container and range of the vehicle. Although similar storage technologies may be used for and similar compromises would apply to a hydrogen vehicle as part of a proposed new hydrogen economy, methane as a gaseous fuel is safer than hydrogen due to its lower flammability, low corrosivity, and better leak tightness due to its larger molecular weight, resulting in lower price hardware solutions. Other factors holding back NGV popularization for individual mobility applications, i.e. private vehicles, include the additional weight, unfamiliarity with the technology and lack of refueling infrastructure in some countries due to relatively small demand compared with other petroleum-based fuels such as gasoline and diesel.

    The company I work for has a fleet of propane “hybrid” trucks. They are broke down all the time and eventually wont run on propane anymore.

    A friend of my had a propane powered F150 in high school in about 1988. It was gutless. This guy is saying the power is equal to that of gas? Wow. Technology has came a long way. He had a toggle switch in the cab, to switch from propane to gas.

    For all who are thinking of doing this conversion, I just bought my, Italian made, kit for my 3.L Ford Ranger for $600
    During my time in Ukraine, where many have conversions, I met friends who actually do these conversion and charge $1000 for the WHOLE job.
    $9000 is criminal!

    I have a propane foodtruck that was given to me. I would like to use it for work. It's gutless in general and think adding a gas fuel tank for dual fuel would help. Any tips or advice? Thanks a bunch!!

      Thanks for the question. I would recommend checking with a company (link for this company in the video is in the description under the video) that does this type of conversion to see if your vehicle is even a possibility for such a conversion. I know that they only do this on certain vehicles. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

    Would you be able to fill the vehicle from a 500 gallon residential LP tank? Is there adapters to make that possible?

    • @TwoGuysandaRide
      @TwoGuysandaRide  4 місяці тому +1

      I would contact an installer to be sure what your proposing will work, you can click the link in our description below to start. So, that being said, there are adaptors out there for filling your vehicle with propane, but check with some folks that install/convert cars to propane to be sure it’s safe, and reliable. Thanks for watching!

    This is intriguing. Can this work with diesel as well? This seems to be a nice bridge between petrol fuel and EV vehicles.

      It won't work with a Diesel engine as the only fuel. It will work alongside diesel fuel. Propane acts as a catalyst and raises the burn rate of diesel fuel to almost 100 percent and it also will increase boost pressure and horsepower. Thanks for the question

    How common are the LPG cars and fueling stations in US? A bit? Not at all?
    In Europe a lot of gasoline cars are converted with bi-fuel LPG kits to run on LPG (and there are also factory specced LPG versions). And at least 50%+ of the gas stations have LPG pumps.

      That’s their price at the time this was filmed. Don’t forget their may be rebates from your local state propane association. In this case there was a $5000 rebate available so total cost would have been $4000 (at the time this was filmed). Thanks for watching!
