People might think this is silly or a waste of time, but these guys are having fun and coming up with ways to make more efficient machines and doing complex engineering.

Regardless of what the machine's function is, it's still applied engineering and can still make advances in certain fields of mechanical engineering. Like it or not, this is just how human progress works sometimes. It's no different than F1 racing leading to advancements in the automotive industry.
My home church tacked a bullseye on the top of the building one time during this festival. Of course it was just out of the range of the cannons but still it was pretty funny.
Probably the town made them move, or the field got sold to a developer or something. And now Delaware threw them out all together. What is THAT all about?
I understand insurance reasons why it won't be insured anymore in Delaware, but pumpkin chunking belongs in Delaware. That's where originated. That's where it should stay. We need a petition that we can sign that will bring pumpkin chunking back to the state of Delaware! (Paul The Delawarean)
Anytime guys do things like this, it's to impress the girls. It also gives you a chance to destroy a pumpkin without throwing it from your car into the street!
This is what makes America Great.

Ha, I guarantee no engineer thinks this is a silly waste of time

Who's going to be the first to use electromagnetics
Or vaccum compression
I wonder if using sabots would be illegal in the air cannons to increase the initial velocity of the pumpkins.
pumpkin railgun?
Railgun was my idea.
They should try tossing atlantic giant pumpkins! Those things can weigh up to 1,000 lbs!
Needs to add an accuracy component to the competition.
They use to put a couple old campers out in the field and would shoot pumpkins through them. It might be silly but it makes for a great weekend.
This is what civilian build when we're bored haha

The punkins are whole, not in chunks. So why do they call it "chunkin"? Shouldn't it be "chuckin" like the machines are chuckin it across the field?
Thank you for that!
Yeah but that doesn't rhyme. 😅
I mean they are in chunks by the time it’s done
