- The story of Strixhaven centers around a magical school for wizards located on the plane of Arcavios. The young Planeswalker twins, Will and Rowan Kenrith, as whisked away by Kasmina to hit the books! Crazy stuff happens with an evil group called the Oriq. Dragons, Blood Avatars, and Lukka all join the fun. We go over all 15 story spotlight cards and connect EVERYTHING that happens in Strixhaven: School of Mages.

Strixhaven total recap with some final thoughts. What did you think about this Magic: The Gathering story?
Another filler! The writters of WotC needs to take more risks, do you remember how empty the lore was after they kill Yawgmoth, Gerrard, Urza and the others? But then came the Mirari Saga, all the Cabal stuff, Kamahl, Jeska, Phage, a fresh and cool new start. Maybe they need to do something like that!
I appreciate the character development, particularly with Liliana. A filler episode, but it's appreciated while we take a break from the multiverse spanning story of WAR. Though, I will say, the story would have been so much better in a 2-set block format ;)
Its the same saving the world cliche that is in every MTG set! Huge missed opportunity here. Might be more refreshing if they had gone with something smaller and more personal like examination anxiety or bullying. I am not expecting for the story to contain social discourse like costs of tuition and sports scholarships, but still.
Since the end of the Urza´s saga story I find MTG lore lacking in creativity.
Now is all formulaic. Take an ancient culture or the context of a popular movie franchise and make a plane.
Then the crap of diversity and a cliche and you have a new planeswalker.
I forget already what was all about Koldheim.
But frankly, everything EEUU does lately is like that. Formulaic use of old tropes mixed terrible politics.
I feel like wizards is taking an episodic view on their lore. This is just and episode that has characters doing things that teach them about the world. The blood avatar and extus or whatever turned out to be a pretty lame threat, but kasmina, the twins, Lilliana, and all the cool elder dragons strixhaven seems to be another well designed plane. Did I enjoy the story? Yes. Did I think the payoff was kind of lame? Also yes. It’s just another story leaving me wanting. Maybe one day wizards will pay writers to make more comprehensive tales about their characters giving them more dimensions. Until then I’ll just play brawl on arena.

Garruk was watching over the twins??!! And damn, it was really cool to see Will and Rowan diverge in personality, but ultimately compensate for each others' differences, save the day!!
See, that's the thing - I would Never in a hundred years have known about these awesome relations without the Aether Hub.. I wish you the best of like in the future, but no matter what, know that I will always be Incredibly grateful for you shedding light on the curious relations between otherwise lifeless characters!!!!
Finally. Seiben Lore.
So I think it's interesting that in some ways, an Izzet colored individual or Planeswalkers associated with 2 colors for example, can be hindered or unbalanced.
They may lean hard red, or hard blue, and benefit and suffer accordingly.
Rowan and Will are interesting because they explore those two aspects fully as they are linked via spark, but individually as they explore those aspects separate from the other.
This could play out good or bad for them, based on their relationship and how similar they stay.
...which you already see wax and wane.
Really great job summarizing Strixhaven! I really had some trouble getting into this set. I can't agree more that the one set per plane limitation really hamstrings the story and world building.
I think you should have gone a bit more into the fact Lukka had a very negative personal experience with authority on his home plane which turned him into a turncoat anarchist, and also the fact Lukka's kinda dumb, extremely vindictive, and slightly insane.
Looking at Lukka as a wayward and tired former soldier full of anger, angst, anarcist energy and a desire for a group like he had before makes his actions make a lot more sense. The Orix is exactly what he was dreaming of; a group of rebels that are massive underdogs. Why wouldn't be join up instantly?
He's definitely not the strongest character, but he's definitely got the potential to be an interplanar rebel, and maybe less of a villian and more of a force of nature, sometimes the antagonist, sometimes an ally, always the underdog.
Way to stay strong with great content lately man. I know you've had a rough patch recently and I'm glad you have not let that defeat you. Keep it up brother.
It really sucks that some of these videos seem to be getting less and less views from what I can tell. You always do a fantastic job, and should be proud. I happily watch them all, and have for a couple years I believe.

Shadrix Silverquill is a personal idol of mine. Near unlimited power, and he relishes above all else the eloquence of the spoken word.
I just realized the Rowan/Will planeswalker card perfectly reflects their diverging personalities, by being a modal double faced card it forces you to choose between one or the other unless you have two copies of the card.
Thanks for this video, I was waiting for it! Not exactly sure what they are doing in the grand scheme of the story. I just wish they would get back to some sort of story ark with cohesion and we knew what these planeswalkers were up to.... Which so far since WAR has been a while lot of nothing.
They had such a great opportunity in Kaldheim to make Tibalt a real antagonist and he fell right on his face. I guess we have to wait for Bolas to break out for the story to get back on track.
I was going to say the Oriq was also the villainous ascended in Stargate but those are the Ori.

Okay so I now need a story where Garruk finds out Will lost a leg and is an angry protective daddy bear. Also he makes a peg leg for Will. +_+
Don't worry, the next batch of writer will completely forget about Will's leg just as easily as they write Garruk out of the story again.

Pretty sure Loth will fill that enemy Planeswalker role just fine.
That was a cool story. Izzet is my favorite guild, so I totally go for Prismari. I am glad that Will and Rowan got to be in a new story. Blue is my favorite color. If I had to pick between them, I would definitely go for Will.

Plot twist: oko shows up on Arcadia and impersonates a professor, and we get Throne level shenanigans all over again in the next set.

Lukka was an unsympathetic bastard in Ikora (and that's not easy of there is Vivien you were compared with) and so he is in Strixhaven. They need to get rid of him.
When Liliana got teleported away there is a thing that always comes in my mind. "That's exactly what a 12y/o would write down." Sad it happens a lot since War of the spark. ("Blackbalde was all along not a weapon that can harme me muhahaha" >_>) And remember ppl get paid for those plot twists.

You mean to tell Liliana Vess the powerful planeswalker AND Professor of a school of magic couldn't teleport back to the fight😭yeah ok the fact she was even teleported away before she could do anything is surprising enough but the fact she couldn't come back is some crazy plot induced stupidity right there. It would have made more sense if she was teleported to a different dimension or something and couldn't come back in time because she was fighting creatures there. That would have made so much more sense
An actual question: even for a cosmopolitan location like Strixhaven, we still wound up with more fantasy races on display than we usually see for a plane, even for a decuple-plane like we had last time. Is Arcavios just _that_ diverse, or, given this is apparently a happening interplanar site, past oldwalkers brought a bunch of people with them, like what happened with Ravnica?
She also save school ,try be good person ,so she lied but atleast she did best be a good person .She likely seeks to honor death good person .Future student of her could good guy ,also teach other danger of black magic .
Future bad guys the Pharexians ,Tazir ,Tabolt are one think right now for future problems .

Has there been a story/set that has focused on the creation and birth of Planes?
I’m fairly new to digging into the depth of story of the MtG Universe. However I feel like Strixhaven and Arcavios is the first time they’ve really talked about the birth of Planes with the snarls as a focal point.

The thing you mentioned with Kasmina and that she's forming a "cabal". Do you think that this group may connect the story to those that hunt for Davriel?
Not sure if you had an video covering Davriel's story. The background worldbuilding done in Children of the Nameless (namely those planar manifestation entities and people hunting for Davriel for his connection to one) is something Wizards are yet to build upon in future stories.
We will see but it could be a fun connection

My only qualm is that your content isn't organized within the Playlist and I listen to your whole story bits since they are the longest but find that I have to try to navigate to the correct video while I'm driving. Is there any way that you could restack the videos...probably by naming convention I'm sure 1. The Complete History part I, 2. The complete history part II. So on and so forth.

Man I loved this set
Not really that bad for a love letter to Harry Potter. Though it leaves much to be answered about the plane itself but that's not always a bad thing. Leaves it room to grow. Poor Lukka though is too much of a punching bag all too soon. I kept hoping he would realize throwing in with a bunch of dark mages wouldn't get him the solidarity of a chain of command and comradery he probably doesn't even realize he misses. I'm not sure he can be a hero at this point but at least he still has Mila. Maybe he can Planeswalk somewhere more tolerant and peaceful. Liliana's growth is the best of the set. She gives up trying to resurrect Gideon. Finally he can be left to the peace he's earned and maybe see from Theros that his action helped change many lives for the better. Also maybe Kasmina will put in a good word back at Ravnica for Liliana not to be public enemy #1? Seriously it sucks she risked her life and yet the Gatewatch probably still doesn't care. Will and Rowen got some good development and were decent protagonists if typical in their color's beliefs. Taking down a legendary almagmation of an era is noteworthy for sure.
All in all a pretty good story for introduction into a plane. I hope one day we get more from the plane itself but I was satisfied with the story as a whole.
I hope we can explore outside the school as well. Get to know the world.

I have a question about Strixhaven: What if someone doesn't want to learn magic goes to the school? Is it possible for someone to still learn things that isn't magic?
16:20 Let's hope those efforts are better built upon in a possible return to Arcavios, as opposed to the slapdash worldbuilding efforts of that _other_ fantasy story built upon a wizarding school...

Love the video!! I agree that single set blocks are not good for the story and lore. One set isn’t nearly enough time for a full adventure to be fleshed out. But from what I’ve heard from the past, three sets was too long. Should wizards go back to the 2 set block format?
2 set block worked for Ixalan and Amonkhet, so it's worth a try.

@@alextrollip7707 unless he had a reason not to, like trying to get as much knowledge as possible, although it's more likely the headmaster dragons would attack Bolas on sight because of the terrible deeds of his are written down in books at the school. Which actually makes it so if he had it would have to have been before the end of the blood age

I found myself thinking everything starting at about 2.5 to 3 months ago and older looked A LOT more interesting, as I was scrolling down. Even without reading the titles. I've been trying to figure out why the story for the game has fallen off, kinda obvious now that you point it out, with 1 set per block they just dont have the space to do proper world/character building before it's on to the next one, really takes away from the game...

I think that is the point, you don't have to like a villain. In fact unlikable villains are far more interesting then then somebody doing bad things for a good reason.
