So when I reread The Brothers' War novel recently, one of the things I had really forgotten was how before traveling to Argoth, Urza was showing a lot of regret and self awareness about just how brutal he had been. He had thought he was better than Mishra, as he only committed many of the atrocities and war crimes because it was the only way to keep pace with Mishra. But the thing is, the worst possible thing for those around Urza happened. He was proven right; Mishra was an inhuman monster and Urza was justified in his actions to defeat him at any cost. And that is the philosophy that carried for the rest of his days, where he mercilessly sacrificed entire planes, manipulated blood lines to engineer his own perfect soldiers, toyed with the fabric of reality itself, treated the people around him as nothing but resources or tools to use and cast aside when he was finished with them, and wrecked untold havoc and damage in his single minded goal to destroy Phyrexia. It really sets up the character arc right at the beginning, even if the original authors probably hadnt intended it.
And probably the only thing that can be called a glimmer of redemption,is that karn,one of urzas greatest creations probably upheld his legacy the best, because he was the polar opposite of both brothers Karn felt pity for others,desired to help people and inprove life,hell mirrodin prior to new phyrexia other then memnarch lived in reletive peace while he was elsewhere And even through it all,karn truely held kindness in some facet,whilst urza had no choice but to do some messed up shit to even have a prayer of fighting phyrexia and ending yawgmoth
lol i do not think Urza was justified in using any method to defeat mishra. in the end urza did catastrophic damage to dominaria killing millions of people in the process, as well as leaving a massive power vaccum that allowed factions like the cabal, orcs and goblinsto take power and commit even more atrocities.
You are without a doubt the best mtg lore channel there is. Doing in depth research into how the lore is woven into the cards making the videos so much more interesting. It also helps that your voice is very nice to listen to.
Man you really know how to weave the lore of magic in such an engaging and entertaining way. I was entranced every second of this video. Love the work you all do!
I've been playing this game on and off since the latter end of the mid '90s. Never once did I look into the story behind it until just in recent weeks. I've really missed out. Thanks for making these comprehensive videos. I can't get enough of them.
I just wanna say how amazing your channel is, you’ve brought magics lore to life in a way that no one I’ve watched has ever done. All of your content is just so detailed in an interesting way.
Mishra’s commander deck was the first I ever bought and it really sparked my love for the game on another level as I realized there were complex and compelling stories to discover hidden among the cards and there descriptions. Really appreciate you and your content for weaving those stories together into a fascinating chronicle
Amazing work, as usual by now. However, my favorite part of the video is the thorough exploration of the personal development. Most lore channels go for the “Mishra bad” and “Uhm actually Urza is a villain” without much depth. I appreciate a lot the effort you put in highlighting the personal experience of characters and understanding how they arrive to certain attitudes or less flattering personality traits. Bravo.
