@Nik Rijavec 2, just gotta drill an anchor point in my mower deck and add the hardware to clip my line. I did a dry run by putting some wire around the lower part of the engine and clasping a line to it, worked good! My own yard Roomba! Thanks for the idea bud! You know, if you use TWO poles, you can get the mower to mow an ellipse. A little creative landscaping would turn any rectangular lawn into an elliptical one.
For the best efficiency: Make the circumference of the poll equal to the diameter of the blade. Or just a tad bit less. That way you won't be wasting gas going over the same spot multiple times.
@@poisonousnut basically if you has mower & the blades cutting diameter is 24 inches the pole diameter(not circumference, that's a different measurement which will lead to a different result) should be between 19-21 inches so that you go over the last edge properly.
@@iian_ makes sense if you double cut but with each pass you're throwing more grass on the high grass. The high grass is hard enough to cut without 20 extra layers of grass to cut through.

Inside to outside would be the better pattern...especially if you design the rope anchor point to use a ball bearing. That way, if you were indisposed, the mower would just run in circles until you were able to stop it manually or until it runs out of fuel. I did mine using a 1 gallon paint can for the 'post'. it's circum. matches perfectly a 22" mower. looks like you were fine w/ 1/2 mower overlap and why not? nice job.

TheRantingCabby but their “robomower” can cut all yards, not just circles. And they’re silent. And you never have to recharge/refuel them because they drive into their charging port.
That and the robomower isn't going to take off and damage something if the rope breaks like this would. Only way this works is tying down both the engine and drive safeties. Plus, if you aren't paying attention and it gets to the center the mower is going to be sitting there running with the drive wheels engaged which is neither good for it or the yard.
Idk what is more impressive; how awesome and easy this makes mowing or the fact I'm still too lazy and will gladly pay the neighbor kid. When I move, I am definitely installing a post and using this.

The math for this to work properly is quite impressive, the circumference of the pole and the string combined must be equal to the width of the deck of the mower. Thinking of it you really couldn't scale this up too much without your string bunching up and messing up your cut
It's amazing because if the mower isn't mowing enough of grass each rotation you can use a poll with a bigger circumference so it gets closer to the poll each rotation

I did this as a kid but with a troybuilt rototiller. My dad told me I had to spring till the garden and we had about a half an acre. I really didn’t want to (no surprise). I dug a fence post hole and put a post in it. Tied a rope to the tiller and post and let it go. Rototiller wound up on the post just like I planned. About the time dad was getting home from work the tilling was almost complete and I’m sitting in a lawn chair watching it go. Through the was going to yell at me but he told me “worked smarter, not harder” and went in the house..

C Smith Yeah, I much prefer a light mower to a self-propelled one. Much easier to do "detail" work with a lighter mower that it makes up for being more work to push. Besides, if you have a large enough yard where pushing a mower is a pain, make the step up to a riding mower already!
You can also substitute a goat for the mower : ) I visited a salvage yard that had a couple goats roaming. There was not a single weed around all the junk cars , it was so clean and the goats were pretty friendly.
Purpose crafted solution - I did this back in the early 80s, albeit with a 12hp Wheel Horse Garden tractor and a 50’ poplar tree - just had to lock the steering wheel at a slight angle so that the concentric circle would collapse. This was before they required the “empty seat” activated- kill switch. It was fun to do but after a few iterations, my dad said that if I was going to do this he’d dock my allowance lol... but got bonus $ for ingenuity

Go "Counter-Clockwise" so the lawnmower doesn't keep throwing grass on the grass its about to cut. It'll give the yard a nicer cut.

I would actually prefer to run over clippings as it would break them up more making them compost faster.

If you use a thicker pole, it will go faster and won't be running over the same spot as much, since more rope will be wrapped up with each pass
if the circumference of the pole is larger than the width of the mower you'll miss a strip so you can't go too big though

They call it "self propelled". They're also a lot heavier and can't really be pushed anywhere unless its running.

Yeah, I much prefer a light mower to a self-propelled one. Much easier to do "detail" work with a lighter mower that it makes up for being more work to push.
Besides, if you have a large enough yard where pushing a mower is a pain, make the step up to a riding mower already!

I visited a salvage yard that had a couple goats roaming. There was not a single weed around all the junk cars , it was so clean and the goats were pretty friendly.
That would still totally work for an entire yard, just use a removable stake to attach the rope to in different sections. 👍🤓

Purpose crafted solution - I did this back in the early 80s, albeit with a 12hp Wheel Horse Garden tractor and a 50’ poplar tree - just had to lock the steering wheel at a slight angle so that the concentric circle would collapse. This was before they required the “empty seat” activated- kill switch. It was fun to do but after a few iterations, my dad said that if I was going to do this he’d dock my allowance lol... but got bonus $ for ingenuity
